TPGA Executive Director

There’s a saying that “March comes in like a lion (and out like a lamb)” but I’m pretty sure that’s a saying from the U.K., or some other northern climate. For us here in Texas, August came in like a lion. Here’s to hoping the weather has broken and we’re on to “fall”. Before the heat blast, we all enjoyed a spectacular Crossroads event in Irving with our friends from Oklahoma. We broke all kinds of records with more than 665 propane professionals attending and participating in the events. These numbers are impressive, but more importantly, they show your commitment to your customers and your industry. They show your willingness to continue to learn and connect with vendors, finding the best products for their needs. Thank you to every sponsor, exhibitor and attendee for such a great event. I also want to acknowledge the incredible generosity of our members and donors, who raised more than $54,000 during the auction event Friday night to benefit the TPGA Scholarship Fund.

You can get to know new TPGA President Jeremy Gentile with a Q&A we conducted with him. You’ll learn about what he values and what he hopes to accomplish during his term. The Duty to Warn Safety Mailing Program is open for the heating season. Read more about how you can participate. We've included some thoughts from the general counsel at the Texas Workforce Commission on job postings and if you are exposing yourself to any liability. It is some good information to know.

Our Inside the Industry includes short news that is important to our members, along with acknowledging those we have lost in our In Memoriam section. While propane being used on farms is as old as the discovery of propane, a team of researchers is exploring the possibility of turning cow manure into propane. While manure has long been used to produce natural gas, changing the process could instead produce propane. Check out the Propane with Purpose for details.

2026 Red River Crossroads Breaks Records in Irving This past August, the Texas Propane Gas Association (TPGA) and Oklahoma Propane Gas Association (OPGA) welcomed propane professionals from across the region to Irving for the 2026 Red River Crossroads Propane Expo & Conference. Held August 6-8 in Las Colinas, this year’s Crossroads brought together more than 665 propane professionals for three packed days of education, networking, competition, fundraising and fun. Events spanned two neighboring properties—the Westin Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas and the Irving Convention Center. Altogether, Crossroads featured 21 events over three days, including 14 training classes and sessions, two sporting tournaments, two cocktail receptions and one massive Friday night dinner and Casino Party attended by more than 390 people. The record turnout reflected not only the continued growth of Crossroads, but also the propane industry’s enthusiasm for coming together to learn, build relationships, exchange ideas and support causes important to the industry.

Taking Aim and Teeing Off

Friday also started early for attendees participating in two Crossroads sporting traditions. The Elmer Atkins Memorial Golf Tournament SPONSORED BY TARGA brought golfers to Hackberry Creek Country Club for a shotgun scramble. Players started the morning with breakfast before heading onto the course for competition, networking and plenty of friendly rivalry. The tournament also featured Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin contests, along with numerous sponsored holes benefiting the TPGA Scholarship Foundation and a sponsored beverage cart. Congratulations to first place winners: Ryan Hooker, Dan Poli, Josh Seaman, and Sean Daughtery.

Training That Delivers Value

Education once again played a major role at Crossroads, beginning Thursday with separate Texas and Oklahoma regulatory training tracks. Friday morning, attendees moved to the Irving Convention Center for a full lineup of 12 Technical and Technology Training Sessions. Topics ranged from generator sizing, pumps and motor maintenance, meter troubleshooting and regulator selection to grounding and bonding CSST, cathodic protection, artificial intelligence, social media, tank monitoring, workforce recruitment and Propane Education & Research Council programs and resources.

After a full day of training and tournaments, Crossroads attendees came back together Friday afternoon for the Presidents’ Cocktail, recognizing TPGA’s past and present presidents and the leadership that has helped shape the association. The evening also marked an important transition for TPGA with the traditional passing of the gavel. Outgoing TPGA President Larry Baty, who served from 2024–2026, passed the gavel to incoming President Jeremy Gentile of Hill Butane, officially beginning a new chapter in TPGA leadership. Then it was time for one of the biggest events of the conference. More than 390 people gathered for the Landman Dinner & Casino Party, featuring Texas barbecue and line dancing and twostepping led by seven-time UCWDC World Champion Bryce Green and MCed by Dallas top DJ, Bill Cody. After dinner, the action moved to the casino floor, where gaming tables kept the party going. This year’s casino prizes embraced the Landman theme, with prizes ranging from a pilot script autographed by members of the cast to a life-size cutout of Billy Bob Thornton, along with other Landman-inspired items. The evening also demonstrated just how generous the propane community can be. The live auction featured the Stock the Bar Booze Wagon, a Hill Country getaway to Fredericksburg and a special U.S. Capitol flag flown in honor of America’s 250th birthday. Thank you to Scott Moore of Blackburn Propane for auctioneering. By the end of the evening, more than $54,000 had been raised Friday night alone, an extraordinary show of support from the industry.

An Expo Floor Full of Opportunity

Saturday brought everyone together at the Irving Convention Center for the Red River Crossroads Propane Expo. The Expo featured nearly 100 vendors, suppliers and organizations, giving attendees the opportunity to see the latest propane equipment, technology, services and business solutions under one roof. From trucks and tanks to software, equipment and services, the show floor provided propane marketers with direct access to the companies helping move the industry forward. Fundraising continued throughout the Expo with several activities benefiting the TPGA Scholarship Foundation. Attendees could try their luck at the Duck Pull Game, bid on items in the Expo Silent Auction and shop the Kendra Scott Jewelry Trunk Show, where 20% of proceeds benefited the Scholarship Foundation.

Thank you to all of our auction donors. A separate shotgun drawing also raised funds for TPGA’s Legal Defense Fund. Thank you to The Petersons for donating the Benelli M2 shotgun and congratulations to Doyle Fevig for winning the shotgun.

Cooking with Gas:

Enforcement and Industry Talk Shop at Propane Expo By Corporal Casey Jones Texas Department of Public Safety Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Radiological/Nuclear Threat Detection Unit On August 8, 2026, I had the pleasure of attending the 2026 Red River Crossroads Propane Expo in Irving, TX. This year’s event drew over 665 propane industry professionals from across Texas and Oklahoma, as well as 93 exhibitors. Everything from insurance to cargo tanks to hand cleaner was represented. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Sergeant D’Jae Vela and I were assigned to the “Regulatory Pavilion.” Texas DPS Driver’s License Division, Texas DPS Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC), Texas Workforce Commission, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), Texas Department of Agriculture, American Energy Institute, and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) all had a table there…It was literally a one-stop shop for almost any regulatory question a propane carrier might have. Having all the agencies together in one area proved to be invaluable. Someone would walk up to our table with a roadside type of question, and I’d provide an answer. Their next question would be about re-certifying cylinders, so I’d send them to the PHMSA table. It was a great way for a carrier/owner to get answers. What surprised me the most was the number of owners and drivers who came by the table simply to say, “Hi.” Add the fact that I have previously stopped and inspected some of them, and not even one was upset about being inspected (and some of the inspections were not what we would consider good ones). Being able to talk and share stories made the day pleasant and underscored the importance of strong relationships between enforcement and industry.

Industry Partnerships in Action

Crossroads continued to expand opportunities for propane marketers to interact directly with the state and federal agencies and organizations that regulate and support their businesses. The Regulatory Pavilion brought representatives directly onto the Expo floor, giving attendees an opportunity to ask questions, make contacts and learn more about compliance, enforcement, grants, workforce programs and other resources available to the propane industry. Participating agencies and organizations represented areas including propane safety and regulation, commercial motor vehicle enforcement, CDL requirements, weights and measures, environmental grants, unemployment insurance and federal hazardous materials transportation. The Pavilion complemented the regulatory training offered earlier in the conference and reinforced Crossroads as a place where the propane industry and government agencies can communicate directly and build stronger working relationships.

More Than an Expo

What made the 2026 Red River Crossroads special was the sheer variety packed into three days. Attendees could take a regulatory class in the morning, learn about new technology in a workshop, meet with an equipment manufacturer on the Expo floor, talk directly with regulators, compete in a golf or sporting clays tournament, reconnect with longtime industry friends over a cocktail and raise money for causes important to the propane community—all during one event. The numbers tell the story: more than 665 attendees, 21 events, 14 training classes and sessions, nearly 100 participating vendors and organizations, more than 390 guests at Friday night’s dinner and over $54,000 raised Friday night alone. But Crossroads has always been about more than numbers. It is about bringing together the people who make up the propane industry—marketers, suppliers, manufacturers, regulators, association leaders and industry partners—and creating opportunities to learn from one another and strengthen the relationships that keep the industry moving forward. The 2026 Red River Crossroads Propane Expo & Conference set a new benchmark in Irving. And now, Crossroads is heading south.

Q&A with New TPGA President Jeremy Gentile treat them like family. If you do that, they’ll tell somebody else, and that person will tell somebody else. That has always stuck with me. When I go into a business and someone is personal and makes me feel like I matter, that’s the kind of place I want to go back to. I try to create that same experience for our customers.

Gentile pictured with father in law, Michael Boyd.

TPGA’s new president, Jeremy Gentile of Hill Butane, never planned on a career in propane. What began as helping his fatherin-law while looking for a job turned into a 22-year career in the industry. Today, Gentile brings decades of hands-on experience, a strong belief in personal service and a commitment to industry involvement to his new role as president of the Texas Propane Gas Association. We sat down with him to learn more about his path into propane, what he values about the industry and what he hopes to accomplish during his term. How long have you been in the propane business, and how did you get your start? This October will be 22 years. I was finishing college, working construction and looking for a job. I had gone to school to become a certified firefighter and was interviewing for firefighter positions. My father-in-law needed some help with a few jobs and asked if I would come work with him for a little while until I found a job. I just never left. Here I am 22 years later, and I’m still here. What is your favorite part of working in the propane industry? I really enjoy meeting people and get-

18

ting to know our customers. I’m out in the field most of the time, so I have the opportunity to meet and interact with new customers all the time. I like the personal side of the business. I don’t want our customers to feel like they’re just another number. I want them to feel like family and know that we value their business. Looking back over your career, what has been one of your most memorable moments? Becoming TPGA president is probably the most memorable. Knowing that my peers thought enough of me to put me in this position and felt that I was ready and capable of doing it means a lot. I never really thought I would be in this position, but I’ve had some inspirational people along the way who encouraged me to become involved and pushed me to do more. They were people I really looked up to. What is one of the best pieces of advice you have received? My dad always told me that word of mouth is your best advertisement. Treat your customers and everybody else the way you would want to be treated, and

Texas Propane • www.txpropane.com

Was there any advice that influenced your involvement with TPGA? When I first became involved, Hobie told me I needed to serve on a committee. I told him no, and he basically said, “Well, I’m putting you on one because that’s where all the work happens.” After serving on the Board and committees over the years, I realized how true that was. You can walk into a Board meeting and vote on something, but the committees are where the conversations and discussions really happen and where much of the work gets done. That’s one reason I would like to encourage more members to become involved in TPGA committees. What do you believe is one of propane’s greatest strengths? Its versatility. Propane touches so many different areas. It isn’t a one-dimensional product. You have residential applications, commercial and industrial uses, agriculture, motor fuel and many other applications. There are so many different things you can do with propane, and I think that versatility is one of our industry’s greatest strengths. Where do you see one of the biggest opportunities for the propane industry? I still think there is a bigger opportunity on the motor-fuel side. One of the challenges is accessibility. With gasoline or diesel, you can find a station almost anywhere. Propane isn’t always as readily available when someone needs to fuel a vehicle, especially when traveling.

If we can continue growing the infrastructure and make propane motor fuel easier and more accessible, I think there is a larger market we can tap into. Why is TPGA membership and industry involvement important? One of the biggest benefits is advocacy. TPGA does a lot to watch what is happening legislatively and with regulations and to make sure the industry has a voice. There is also tremendous value in being able to sit down with your peers from across Texas. What I deal with on the coast may be completely different from what someone in North Texas deals with, and they may face things that I never see. When we talk to each other, we learn what has worked in other businesses and share our own experiences. I’ve also made a lot of friendships through the Association that I wouldn’t have made otherwise. At any given time, I know I can call people across the state and they’re willing to help. We’ve seen that during hurricanes and other emergencies. I’ve had people from other companies call and ask, “What do you need? Do I need to send a truck? Do you need a service truck or people to come help?” That willingness to help one another is a big part of what makes this industry and this Association special.

sources and outdoor areas that are such an important part of our communities and way of life.

Job Postings: A Legal Perspective for Employers By Naomi D. Howze, Legal Counsel to Texas Workforce Commission Chair Joe Esparza

of job postings and builds sound drafting habits around them. The Anti-Discrimination Framework

Many employers think of job postings simply as a marketing tool. In truth, they are one of the earliest points at which an

22

employer can become exposed to liability under state and federal law. A successful employer understands the legal aspects

Texas Propane • www.txpropane.com

At the federal level, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin by employers with 15 or more employees. Texas law largely mirrors this federal standard but is enforced at the state level. As such, the words used in job postings should be chosen carefully: language that is discriminatory, or could be construed as such, can create legal exposure for the employer. The safest course is to use neutral phrasing throughout, soliciting only job-related information from candidates. Disability status deserves special attention for covered employers under the Americans with Disabilities Act. While an employer may not ask a job applicant

to answer disability-related questions before extending an offer, an employer may ask whether an applicant can perform the essential functions of the job. See https:// www.eeoc.gov/disability-discriminationand-employment-decisions. This kind of inquiry relies on the posting having already identified what those essential duties are and what the position requires, including physical demands and working environment. Employers also cannot discriminate based on citizenship status during hiring, and a process for verifying employment eligibility through Form I-9 should be in place as soon as the worker is hired. Qualifications, Duties, and Commitments

The same legal concerns that arise under anti-discrimination law extend into how a posting handles job qualifications. Required skills, technology proficiency, years of experience, education, and licensure should all bear a genuine relationship to the job. A requirement that sounds reasonable in isolation may create liability if it screens out protected groups at a higher rate without a legitimate business justification, so every qualification should be defensible as a necessity, not just a preference. The same applies to practical details such as full-time or parttime status, hours, shift patterns, flexibility, and remote, hybrid, or on-site status. Ambiguity here can muddy exempt and non-exempt classifications under the Fair Labor Standards Act, potentially inviting wage claims down the line.

Compensation Transparency

Pay transparency is shifting from best practice to being a legal requirement in a growing number of states and disclosing a salary range is increasingly expected, even in states like Texas, where it remains optional. A well-drafted posting specifies pay frequency (bi-weekly, semi-monthly, salaried, etc.), and describes benefits such as insurance coverage, leave policies, retirement plans, bonuses, and educational assistance. This transparency can reduce friction in negotiations with potential hires.

Practical Considerations

A genuine introduction to the company’s culture, mission, and values helps

candidates self-select accurately and reduces early turnover from mismatched expectations. Clear language and organization support readability and help to avoid phrasing that could be misconstrued. The posting should close with application instructions that are easy to follow, requiring as few steps as reasonably possible, since every added click is a chance to lose a qualified candidate.

it is treated that way under the law. Approaching it with legal discipline, not just marketing polish, protects the organization from exposure that can be difficult and costly to unwind later. This article is courtesy of the Texas Workforce Commission and appeared in their August 2026 newsletter.

PROPANE with PURPOSE 30

From Dairy Manure to Propane: UVM Researchers Explore a New Path for Renewable Fuel

A research team at the University of Vermont is working on an unconventional approach to renewable propane production: using dairy manure as the feedstock. The project aims to redirect the biological processes typically used in anaerobic digestion. Instead of allowing manure to complete its conversion into methane, researchers are attempting to interrupt the process and capture intermediate compounds that can then be converted into propane. The work could eventually offer the broader industry an intriguing new model for producing renewable propane from an abundant agricultural waste stream. According to reporting by WCAX, approximately 15 Vermont farms currently use anaerobic digesters to convert manure into methane, which can be used on-site or upgraded and sold as renewable natural gas. But University of Vermont researchers believe there may be another opportunity within that same biological process. “The gas that you use for cooking your food, I’m going to produce in that box,” Mona Davoudimehr, a Ph.D. candidate working on the project,

Texas Propane • www.txpropane.com

told WCAX. Davoudimehr and her colleagues are developing what they describe as a photoreactor that would work with the manure-processing system. The concept is to stop the normal anaerobic digestion process before methane is formed. “If we stop that process short, we can force them to accumulate these intermediates,” Matt Scarborough of the University of Vermont told WCAX. “And these intermediates are the things that we can use to produce things like propane gas.” The potential feedstock is substantial. An average dairy cow can produce roughly 22,000 kilograms of manure annually, Davoudimehr told the television station, creating both a waste-management challenge and a potentially significant source of renewable fuel. The University of Vermont team began the project in 2022 in collaboration with researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The work is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. For the propane industry, the project is particularly interesting because it focuses on creating propane directly from

a waste stream already being processed at farms. While renewable propane is currently produced through several pathways, including processes associated with renewable diesel and other biofuel production, the dairy-manure approach could eventually provide a more decentralized production model. Scarborough told WCAX that propane’s transportability is another advantage of the concept. If the technology can be successfully developed into a practical farm-scale system, remote dairy operations could potentially convert manure into propane for their own energy needs while producing excess fuel for sale. That remains the long-term vision. The current project is still in the research and development stage, and the team must first demonstrate that the photoreactor can reliably produce propane from the intermediate compounds generated during manure digestion. But the potential is compelling: a system that could turn a farm’s waste stream into a storable, transportable renewable fuel. When WCAX reporter Sophia Thomas asked whether the ultimate goal was for remote farmers to put manure into a digester and get propane out for use around the farm, Scarborough’s answer was straightforward: “And hopefully have extra to sell. So, that is the dream.” According to WCAX, the next challenge will be translating the laboratory concept into a system practical enough to deploy on working farms.
