Twenty years is a long while to be doing most anything, but as schools are measured, we are still considered young. That said, we’ve learned a few things over two decades of educating young people and loving them well: Stay The Course t is di cult to imagine a ork more consequential than educating children. The future of our nation quite literally depends on our success, so it stands to reason that we don’t chase trends or follow fads. Yes, we’re eager to embrace true innovation hen e find it but the bedrock of a sound education has not shifted over time And here at Mt. Bethel, it never will.

THEME VERSE 2017-2018
Remain Mission-Minded The most important words of our thirty-six-word mission statement are “Christ-centered.” This crucial term defines ho e are hy e do this ork and importantly, how we do it. There is a well-documented tendency for educational institutions founded on faith to drift from those founding principles over time. This cannot and will not be our story. We routinely examine critical decisions through the lens of our mission, which serves as our north star, ensuring our course remains true. Lead With Love Mt. Bethel feels different than most schools because of the way we love one another. It’s a love that is rooted in Christ’s love for us. Because He has captured our hearts, we are free to give them away to others. Being human, we do this imperfectly, but God is faithful to cover those imperfections and the result is more than just a school - it’s a family. The volume you are holding is a testament to the incredible generosity of the Mt. Bethel family. Moms, dads, grandparents, companies, foundations, and others all coming together to support our first t enty years and position us ell for the next twenty and beyond. FTC ROBOTICS
BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED
In April 2018, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy’s Robotics team, Batteries Not Included, competed at the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) World Championship in Houston, TX. The season started with over 5,000 FTC teams culminating with the best 128 in the world competing in the championship. Batteries Not Included performed admirably throughout the eekend They had a fantastic time meeting other teams from all over the USA as well as from countries such as Israel, Lebanon, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and China. The event was truly a unique opportunity that everyone will remember for the rest of their lives. In addition to competing at Worlds, Batteries Not Included accomplishments include:

YOU FED Me On February 2, 2018, almost 800 different members of the MBCA community worked in shifts inside the main campus gymnasium to pack 100,008 nutritious meals as part of You Fed Me. The meals were delivered to residents of the tiny, African nation of Swaziland. The south African region that includes Swaziland has been struck by significant drought conditions, and the meals packed by MBCA are a life-saving resource for the families who live there.
ORNAMENT FUNDRAISER
At $0.29 per meal, MBCA contributed $29,002.32 to the You Fed Me effort. To help offset costs, 20th anniversary wooden Christmas ornaments were sold with a little help from Eddie the Eagle. It was a blessed way to kick off the Christmas break for our students. Many thanks, Mt. Bethel families, for helping the Academy share the love of Jesus Christ with our brothers and sisters around the world. May God continue to bless us with opportunities to express our passion for serving others and to Him alone be the glory.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN

It is great to be back at MBCA! My children graduated from MBCA’s middle school more than four years ago, and now all three are in college. When Jody Ray called me in August 2017 to consider being the Academy’s chairman of the board, my answer was YES. Why? Because we love the school and the church. The Mt. Bethel campus is where Susan and I raised our kids, and we are confident they were given a great education while shown the love of Christ through an amazing school staff. On Sundays, we were at the same campus, worshiping together as a family. So, it became important to Susan and me to do our part to make sure East Cobb always has a quality, Christian education choice in East Cobb. You should know you have a great board working for you! The trustees take very seriously the responsibility of ensuring MBCA is well-governed and resourced to accomplish its mission and vision. We work hard to make sure we are trained on how to be a successful fiduciary and how to be a successful private school. We also learned what was important to the parents, teachers and students through independent interviews and surveys. And we finished up last year by taking all we learned and mapping out the critical success factors necessary for MBCA’s mission and vision to be accomplished. Eclipse
On August 21, 2017, the great American eclipse cast its shadow from coast to coast. For just a few minutes, the moon slipped between our planet and the sun, and north Georgians were able to witness the first national solar eclipse in 99 years. It was one of the most significant astronomical events of the decade, and Mt. Bethel students were treated to a special afternoon on the fields to safely view the historic moment.
Wearing NASA-certified safety glasses, faces tipped toward the heavens, and the students could clearly see the sun partly disappear as the moon passed between it and the earth. Although East Cobb was not on the “path of totality” where complete darkness occurred, the students did experience a dimming of the sun, mid-afternoon cricket chirping, and a blissful drop in temperature. The solar eclipse reminded everyone that God is a masterful creator and sustainer of the universe. What a blessing to share in this experience together.
INTERNET Safety
Nothing is more important than the safety of our children. At school, we practice safety drills and lock doors. In the car, we use seat belts. At home, we teach our children about the danger of strangers and how to cross the street. But how do we protect our children online? Are we confident that the websites and applications they use aren’t being exploited by predators wishing them harm? Our children are growing up in a digital world which is constantly changing. And the harsh reality is this: it’s impossible to keep up. But, local police departments are willing to work with schools like Mt. Bethel to serve as a resource for families wanting to establish procedures, guidelines, and practices for creating a plan to keep internet usage fun, informative, and free of harm. Last January, the Mt. Bethel Christian Academy Technology Team invited parents to a series of information sessions in partnership with the City of Marietta’s Police Department. Academy parents were encouraged to bring friends and neighbors too. Experts from MPD shared with the audience the latest social media trends, state laws on cyber threats, and where to find reliable resources online. Separately, three student/parent sessions were held for third through 12th grade classes, because online safety is a partnership that works better when parents and children are in it together. Mt. Bethel Christian Academy encourages all parents to enter into conversations with their children about their online choices. As alarming as internet safety risks may be, MBCA and local law enforcement are ready to partner with parents to safeguard our children.

ANNUAL OPERATING BUDGET Profit is not our motive; mission is our motive. 73¢ of every dollar goes directly to our people The bulk of the Academy’s budget provides faculty, staff, teachers and coaches ith salaries benefits and professional development 10¢ keeps our facilities safe and beautiful and provides for the maintenance and operations of our phones, lights, gas, and water. 8¢ covers auxiliary expenses such as: lunch, clinic, buses, ASP care, and supplies. 5¢ supports our Academics and Athletics programs. This includes curriculum e uipment field trips library band chorus, art, technology, and student government. 4¢ is absorbed for administrative fees and costs such as legal expenses, credit card processing, audits, and accounting.

By thoughtful and intentional design, the Academy’s annual operating budget is funded only 94% by tuition and fees. The remaining necessary dollars come from YOU. Taxdeductible contributions to the Annual Fund allow MBCA to fill in the gap in the budget while pricing tuition at a rate that is accessible for a greater number of families.
In 2017-2018, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy partnered with Georgia GOAL, a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) created through the Georgia Private School Tax Credit Program, for the 11th year in a row. By allowing Georgia taxpayers to redirect a portion of their state income tax to MBCA, GOAL provides critical funding for qualified students in need of tuition assistance. Specifically, GOAL funding is allocated for deserving, public school students who are new to Mt. Bethel. The Academy is so grateful to the participating individuals listed below for bringing $167,831 in scholarship money to MBCA. The GOAL program furthers MBCA’s ability to fulfill its Christian mission. Financial aid continues to be of great importance, as 20 percent of MBCA students receive tuition assistance. Thank you for helping to provide an exceptional, Christ-centered education to these students in need. Georgia GOAL participants have directed almost $1,476,000 to deserving MBCA students since 2008. These dollars are a critical component of the Academy’s life-changing tuition assistance initiatives.

Parent Council raised $108,000 in March at the 2018 Spring Fling. Thank you so much to the sponsors, teachers, faculty, and to the generous Academy families who donated spectacular auction items small and large for our school! With these record-breaking proceeds, Parent Council was able to provide the following: • $10,000: Reserved for faculty & staff grants (will carry forward if unused) • $1,500: Designated to Robotics to defray costs associated with the team's world championship appearance in Houston • $17,500: Purchased new band equipment • $22,000: Replaced aging Smart Boards in multiple classrooms • $12,000: Purchased 3D printers for use in Think Tank classes, robotics, and elsewhere • $10,000: Toward purchase of Interactive scoring table for volleyball & basketball games • $2,500: Replaced and refreshed playground mulch (specially formulated without arsenic or formaldehyde and designed to reduce splinters) • $8,300: Purchased new laptops (beyond those needs allocated in the operating budget) • $11,200: Helped defray costs associated with the installation
and equipping of modular classrooms at the north campus • $12,000 – Provided to teachers for use in their classrooms from the proceeds of their "teacher outing" auction package. Guests feasted on barbecue and enjoyed music and fellowship while engaging in some spirited bidding! Dear Mt. Bethel Family, I have always loved teaching. At the beginning of my career, my enjoyment came from helping students overcome academic challenges. But I didn’t know true fulfillment in my calling to be a teacher until I came to Mt. Bethel Christian Academy eight years ago. It is not typical for one’s career path to create an overwhelming feeling of joy and love on a regular basis; however, this is one of the blessings I experience every day at MBCA. Now, not only do I have the privilege of pouring into the lives of my students, but these students then respond by turning around and filling me up with love and inspiration. Ally Greene
Watching our middle school students worship and build a relationship with Christ in an authentic way is a source of courage in my own spiritual journey. Our students abandon worry about what others may think and let go in those moments, which is an incredibly moving experience. This doesn’t happen in most schools; yet, MBCA isn’t like most schools. It creates an atmosphere where students feel safe and at home to become who and Whose they truly are. If that wasn’t enough, my own family is blessed by the love and devotion of our school. My children are deeply cared for and challenged daily to grow not only in their academics but also in their faith. The level of support that teachers provide both in and outside of the classroom mirrors what family looks like. Love is part of every lesson. When I was tasked with encouraging my colleagues to participate in the Annual Fund, I knew I was asking people who share the same experience as me. They know the generosity of our families, and showed their own giving hearts by helping us meet our goal of 100 percent participation. Teaching at Mt. Bethel has helped me to know that teaching is my calling, and it is truly because of the abundant love and faith of this community. May God continue to bless our beloved school. Giving levels at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy are calculated annually (July 1 through June 30) based on annual fund gifts to the Academy. Donors are recognized annually on our Honor Roll of Donors in the appropriate giving level. Corporate matching gifts are encouraged and will count toward giving levels. Eagle Club ($1-499) Recognizing the Academy mascot, a symbol of strength, courage, wisdom, and spirituality. Blue and Gold Guild ($500-999) A tribute to the Academy’s official colors, so chosen because the brightness of gold symbolizes the presence of God, and blue, the color of royalty, welcomes the coming of a King. Academy Guild ($1,000-2,499) Honoring the Academy families, faculty, staff, and Board members who have supported MBCA both prayerfully and financially from the very beginning. Excellence Guild ($2,500-4,999) Recognizing the Academy’s belief that the Bible instructs us to do all things with excellence and purpose. 1998 Society ($5,000-9,999) Honoring the brave students and their families who faithfully embraced the Academy’s mission and enrolled as its first Kindergarten class in August 1998.

Twenty YEAR LEGACY
Prior to the start of the 2017-2018 school year, art teacher Bette Cardell was approached by Mr. Callis with a request: design and create a 20th anniversary commemorative art project in which all students and faculty would be able to participate. Mrs. Cardell took Mr. Callis’s suggestion of “dream big” to heart, and within a few weeks she had sketched preliminary drawings for an eagle sculpture that would be mounted on the front of the Academy building on the main campus. “When I showed my idea to Mr. Callis he said, ‘this is really ambitious, but I think we can do it,’” said Mrs. Cardell. “Each student is a part of this legacy project.” The students were excited about the project from day one. Mrs. Cardell prepared a video for them that explained the scope of the work and the building process. Her sketches turned into a full-sized, scaled drawing, followed by construction of a small model, and finally a consultation with a professional welder. “When I unrolled the large drawing at chapel, the lower school students gave me a big ‘whoa,’ which I really needed,” she said. “I needed that enthusiasm. There were many mysteries to this project, but I had confidence that God would see us through and help the many minds working on this.” From junior kindergarten through 12th grade, every student, faculty, and staff member was invited to make one or more of the 7,000 feathers needed to cover the eagle’s metal frame. Fifth grade students volunteered to come in early to help cut out plain feather shapes for classes to use throughout the day. Using toothbrushes, forks, and fingers, students transformed the plain pieces of clay into life-like eagle feathers, and carved their first names onto the back. Next the feathers had to be fired, glazed and attached to the frame. Copper was used for the eagle’s beak and talons. In May, the sculpture was successfully installed on the front of DeVore Hall where it is visible to all who enter MBCA’s doors. The finished product is a glorious tribute to the Academy’s 20 years of sustained excellence.

Vivian Lovett: A TRIBUTE In August of 1998 something wonderful happened: A faithful, fearless, and loving leader took on the role as Mt. Bethel Christian Academy’s first Head of School. And though Mt. Bethel is much bigger than any one person, it is impossible to think of anyone who shaped the Academy’s path more than Mrs. Vivian Lovett.

When MBCA’s founder, Darren DeVore, approached then-senior pastor, Dr. Randy Mickler, about the possibility of starting the academy, Mrs. Lovett was the director of the Mt. Bethel UMC Preschool. Given her proximity and expertise, she was quickly tapped for advice on how to start a school. In short order, Mrs. Lovett transitioned from school advisor to Head of School, a role she held for ten years, before assuming the role of Lower School Principal. Educational leadership is a role fraught with instability, but Mrs. Lovett defied those odds, enjoying a long and distinguished career. Mrs. Lovett began her teaching career in Augusta, GA, in 1971. As a young, eager teacher placed in an over-crowded classroom of 34 first graders where de-segregation had finally taken hold, Ms. Cook, as she was known then, dove headfirst into what would become her life’s greatest passion. Before the next school year began, Ms. Cook married a young man named William Lovett. Although she and William would go on to welcome two sons and four grandchildren, her commitment to education never waned. She worked tirelessly for 20 years to develop curriculum, to hire teachers, to develop operational policies and procedures, to recruit parents and students and, most importantly, to instill confidence in the East Cobb community that Mt. Bethel Christian Academy is a school of excellence. Vivian Lovett will never be replaced. The uniqueness of MBCA is largely attributable to her leadership and hard work. Her impact on MBCA, its students, its educational philosophy, its families, its teachers, and the East Cobb community will be eternal, and Mrs. Lovett will receive the eternal reward she so richly deserves. Her love of children and her work on their behalf at MBCA will impact generations to come. Mrs. Lovett, we thank you for your love and your leadership. God called you to serve MBCA when you were most needed, and thousands of students and their families will be forever grateful you answered that call.

ASSOCIATION When Mt. Bethel Christian Academy celebrated the graduation of its first senior class in 2018, the Mt. Bethel Christian Academy Alumni Association was born. The Alumni Association is a special affinity group focused on connecting MBCA graduates through social, professional, educational, and service-based events in East Cobb and beyond. To be a member of the Alumni Association, students must have completed 8th grade at MBCA between 2005-2017 and attended high school elsewhere. All upper school students who complete 12th grade at MBCA are considered members of the Alumni Association. Alumni are encouraged to keep in touch, so please visit the Alumni section of the MBCA website to update contact information on file with the Office of Alumni Relations. Association events are a great way for alumni to connect and network with other graduates. Whether looking for a new job or seeking advice from others, this group is a great resource.
