The City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department is delighted to relaunch its cultivating Artists in Residence (AiR) program at the historic Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA). The AiR Program is designed to provide opportunity for artists to have a designated time and space to create new work, collaborate between fellow resident artists, as well as give opportunity for these artists to engage with our Eightcommunity.dynamicartists were selected by a distinguished jury to foster and serve nine months in residency at BaCA from October 2022 through June 2023. Each month, we’ll shine the spotlight on an “Artist of the Month” that features the works and creative programs of the featured artist. AiR artists will be on-site each week creating art and the arts-loving community is invited to BaCA to watch the creative process unfold and to see the latest output. At the conclusion of the residency, AiR artists will share their new artworks in a culminating exhibit and event.

POMPANOBEACHARTS.ORG04 HOURS OF OPERATION AND GENERAL STUDIO INFORMATION Artist’s studios are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for AiR’s use. Galleries and office spaces are only available during business hours, Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Wi-Fi is available throughout the space. CONVENIENCES PROVIDED

A coffee maker, microwave, and refrigerator are avail able for use for AiR Program participants. When placing food in the community refrigerator, label contents with your name and date. Items left for more than 48 hours may be removed at the Cultural Affairs Department staff’s discretion.

Artists are allowed to use tools or equipment outside their assigned space to further an art making project with approval from City staff. Please keep in mind, the space is a common area, shared by all, and must be left in the same condition in which it was found when the artist leaves the premises.

Artists are required to return tools and all checked out equipment in original condition at the end of each work session. AiR’s will be charged for damage to tools or equipment.

Artists are responsible for their own studio upkeep and general housekeeping, including individual trash disposal. Studio spaces are assigned based on artist proposals, needs associated with artistic discipline or residency project, and availability.

COMMON AREAS

Music is allowed within the studio space, nevertheless, be respectful to the other program participants, visitors, City staff and conscious of an appropriate level of volume. No headphone use is allowed when around or using machines.

POMPANOBEACHARTS.ORG06 STUDIO GUIDELINES Ceramics Studio: The ceramic studio is equipped with the following items: • Kiln • Supply carts • Work tables • Restaurant style drying racks • Stools • Chairs • All kiln use must be reviewed in advance with BaCA. • All AiR Program participants must work with BaCA staff to schedule firings and equipment use. • Kilns, torches, burners, and combustion processes may only be used in designated areas. • NO hot wax, paraffin or encaustic materials may be used in the studios without the prior approval from BaCA staff.

AiR Program participants are prohibited from using high-fume mediums including, but not limited to, the following: synthetic resin, tolluline, aerosol paints and fixatives, and turpentine. To have any material approved in advance, such as low odor artist quality sprays, please contact BaCA staff for an exemption. NO adhesives, epoxies, rubber cement, spray paints, plaster or glues permitted on the walls.

Painting: In order to provide a low-odor environment in the studio, AiR Program participants are limited to using linseed oil or alkyd (galkyd) as a medium and odorless mineral spirits, and (gamsol) as a solvent.

Additional Request for Work Spaces:

Depending on space demands, City staff may be able to accommodate AiR Program participant requests to use additional space for preparing for installation projects. Space will be allocated on a case-by-case basis and based upon availability. The installation space is not intended to be a second studio space, but rather a temporary clean space to review or document art work.

All outdoor installation work on BaCA and/or in the local environment will require the proper authorization and property owner approvals. Cultural Affairs Department staff does not permit any permanent indoor or outdoor installations. The safety of any work left outside of the facility cannot be guaranteed and should not be left unattended or unsecured.

• Lead or participate in at least one off-site program possibly at Pompano Beach schools, community centers, parks or other City venues [demonstration, workshop, artist talk or other program open to the public.]

BaCA is open to the public at-large, and will hold oc casional public tours of the facilities. Please note: Art ists are encouraged, when possible, to engage the pub lic during Department and City sponsored events. The public is encouraged to visit BaCA’s common spaces during the facility’s hours of operation and will like ly welcome the opportunity to visit artists during that time.

• Attendance and participation at BaCA during Old Town Untapped event held the first Friday of the month from 6-10pm. Required Untapped events begin in October 2022 and extend through May 2023.

Attendance and Work Production Requirements:

• Create residency project and agree to unveil it in an exhibit or performance as part of a culminating event to occur June 2, 2023 (First Friday).

STUDIO POLICIES & RULES

Open Studio Policy:

• Use the studio space as a working studio space (not as a gallery.)

• Spend a minimum of six (6) hours in-studio each week during BaCA’s regular hours of operation (Tuesday - Friday from 10:00 am until 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.)

• Attendance at monthly meetings of the AiR artists. A time and date of convenience for the AiR artists will be scheduled.

• Lead or participate in at least one “lunch with art” demonstration, workshop, artist talk or other program (open to the public) at BaCA during each artist’s “Artist of the Month” feature.

• If you’re alone in the building and would like to secure the perimeter, enter your code and press 3 (stay).

• If at any time you feel that you are in danger and need to contact emergency services, call 911.

Front Door Alarm Procedures:

• Large trash should be taken out to the dumpster located at the Northeast side of the building.

• When entering the building, enter your 4 digit pin and press 1 (off). Be sure to check in on the 2 nd floor at the artist check-in location at the top of the staircase.

• BaCA Staff will cover the fee of the Broward Sheriff Office’s the first set-off by an artist. Any subsequent fee will be charged to the artist.

• When exiting, check that no other artists or staff are in the building before setting the alarm. Once you know the building is clear, enter your code and press 2 (away).

2022-2033 ARTIST IN RESIDENTS (AIR) PROGRAM HANDBOOK 09 • Assist City Staff in marketing the AiR Program including radio, TV and print publications in addition to social media [‘like,’ ‘tag,’ ‘share,’ etc.], personal websites, blogs, vlogs, etc.]

• Smaller trash items (non-perishable) are to be thrown away in the garbage cans located in the downstairs back hallway next to the elevator.

Housekeeping/Trash: AiR Program participants are responsible for their own studio up-keep and general housekeeping including in dividual trash disposal.

• If you make a mistake while entering your code, press * and start again.

Smoking and Vaping: Smoking and vaping are not permitted in any studio at any time.

Machinery Usage Machinery, digital equipment and power tools (anything that cuts or spins) can be operated between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. and only after completion of safety demonstration and a hold harmless agreement has been placed in your file.

Damage: Please photograph and email documentation of any damages to the facility or equipment promptly with any information you have regarding its cause. You will be responsible for repairing walls, floors, ceilings and any damaged equipment promptly. Accidents are expected and most are not catastrophes if addressed in a timely manner. Any modification of studio space is subject to the BaCA staff approval.

Safety: Do not operate any power tools or sharp objects under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substanc es. BaCA staff reserves the right to refuse equipment and studio use if members are in violation of depart ment procedures and present safety issues for them selves or others around them.

Climate Control: Please DO NOT touch the thermostats. If you have is sues with the temperature of your studio please talk to the staff during business hours.

2022-2033 ARTIST IN RESIDENTS (AIR) PROGRAM HANDBOOK 11 PARTICIPATION FEE PAYMENT Participation fee payments are due on the 1st of each month. Payments can be made though Eventbrite by searching ‘Artist in Residence Monthly Participation Fee’ or scan ning the QR Code below. If rent is not paid by the 5th of the month a $5 .00 charge will be added to each additional day that it remains unpaid, beginning on the 6th, until payment is collected in full. Sleeping: No sleeping in any studio is allowed. Fire Regulations: The Pompano Beach Fire Marshall may visit your studio randomly to conduct fire safety inspections. Legal: BaCA prohibits illegal activities anywhere on the premis es. BaCA is not responsible for lost or stolen items from the studio or other storage areas and encourage AiR Pro gram participants to purchase renter’s insurance. SCAN TO PAY FEE

Visitor Policy: All individuals visiting an AiR participant are welcome. Visitors are expected to abide by BaCA procedures. Please let staff know if five or more visitors will be onsite for any period of time. Emergency: In case of health, fire or other emergent situations, please call 911. In case of a fire or sounding of alarm, evacuate building immediately through the nearest exit. Please make note of all exits.

Animals: No animals other than service animals are allowed in BaCA facilities.

GUIDELINES

Security: Maintaining safety in and around the BaCA is a top pri ority. Do not give your alarm code or building keys to anyone. If you find yourself in an emergency, call 911.

ADDITIONAL MEMBER ARTISTS

During each Artist’s “Artist of the Month” feature, the Artist will be allowed to display their art in the 2nd floor gallery. The gallery space is not likely of a size that allows an artist to feature their entire body of work but will instead be curated to include existing works and work related to the artist’s residency project. Addi tionally, artists will be able to display their works in the “Artist of the Month” retail window on the first floor of BaCA during their “Artist of the Month” feature. The City retains a 30% commission on all items sold in the exhi bition spaces, including the retail window.

POMPANOBEACHARTS.ORG14 FORCONDUCT/REASONSTERMINATION At BaCA we seek to create an environment which is a supportive community that encourages individ ual artistic exploration. Everyone involved in BaCA programs, including guests, must contribute to a respectful and harmonious atmosphere. We re serve the right to terminate the AiR participation agreement of any individual who we believe, in our exclusive opinion, threatens the positive experience for themselves or others. Cause for termination can include but is not limited to: • Lack of Participation • Extended Absences • Plagiarism in Their Work and/or Research • Violation of Contract • Aggravated, physical and/or verbal disputes that endangers the safety and wellbeing of fellow artists, staff and visitors. • Use of alcohol, tobacco, vape or other illegal drug use on BaCA premises. • Breaking and entering staff offices, staff only areas, and/or fellow artists spaces. • Damage or vandalism of equipment and/or structure of the building. • Duplicating Keys and Sharing Entry Codes • Commercial use of the Premises and Equipment • Unauthorized removal of equipment, materials or other from the premises. • Disrespect for shop rules/guidelines or a lack of general involvement in the program. Disclaimer: After two (2) reported and documented incidents, the AiR program participant will be asked to leave the program and premises effective immediately.

2022-2033 ARTIST IN RESIDENTS (AIR) PROGRAM HANDBOOK 15 TERM OF PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT

AiR Program participants are allowed to begin moving into BaCA in September 2022. A participation fee will not be required for September. All artists agree to be moved in by October 1, 2022 and participation fees be gin to be paid in October 2022 through May 2023 (eight months). All AiR artists agree to vacate the premises of BaCA by June 30, 2023.
