A Letter from the Director

I was fortunate to recently be appointed Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of Pompano Beach. The department offers over 250 events a year, and I’m excited for the opportunity to create new initiatives that contribute to the economic and cultural mo mentum so evident in today’s Pompano Beach.

We’re excited about a new Artist in Residence (AiR) program at Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA) that will showcase eight new artists through June of next year – the first “graduating class” to participate in our revamped AiR program. Each month, we’ll have a featured “Artist of the Month” who will exhibit their work and create unique programs to attract art lovers to BaCA. The artmaking, exhibits, classes, and other programs at BaCA will continue.

Great music will return to Old Town Untapped but look forward to some of our other programs that we will soon introduce to the Untapped audience including our new “Baila Pompano” event show casing Latin dance and music, the Chocolate Nutcracker, spoken word (showcasing Exit 36 in December) and even a hip-hop party.

Also, ahead this season is the new Belle’ Arte Concert Series that kicks off with Cuban- American soprano Eglise Gutierrez and also includes a holiday show with Tony Award-winning singer/actor Levi Kreis. We’ll also launch a new 5 th Sunday Gospel program and continue to deliver popular programs Green Market and A Taste of Jazz. To kick off the holidays, mark your calendars for November 20 th for the 12 th Annual Light-Up MLK event! One other programming note, the highly popular Lyrics Lab is moving to the Ali Cultural Arts Center to accommodate the bigger crowds the event attracts.

There’s much more to talk about, but I’ll stop here and instead encourage you to follow us on social media and visit pompanobeacharts.org for great programs and many cool things ahead.

Pompano Beach Public Art Program

Since the Public Art Committee’s inception, which started in 2012, the City has acquired sculptures, murals, wrapped traffic boxes along roadways, and that’s not all. In fact, if you have strolled through the New Downtown, you may have come across mosaic artworks strategically placed along the sidewalks and on buildings. These mosaics belong to the Trail of the Honey Bees which was created by lead artist Sonata Kazimieraitiene and her five apprentices and is part of the $100,000 National Endowment of the Arts grant the City received in 2017 entitled Pompano Beach Crossroads. The trail consists of over thirty honey bee themed mosaics vary ing in size connect multiple Pompano Beach Cultural facilities such as the Historic Ali Cultural Arts Center, Bailey Contem porary Arts, and Pompano Beach Cultural Center, as well as City Hall. This art scavenger hunt showcases the Honey Bee project and Cultural Centers, and many other Public Artworks such as the Painted Pompano sculpture Something Fishy by Missy Pierce located in the Civic Plaza and We Go Together by Gillie and Marc Schattner at the south entrance to the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. In addition, the journey along this trail will lead you into Artists Alley located in Old Town, which currently features eight murals and is activated during Old Town Untapped. In the next few months, keep your eyes peeled to Old Town Pompano as a new mural, approximately 130 feet long, is soon to be installed!
