In the next two decades, the average global temperature will rise. With climate change-induced sea level rise, seawater is already invading some islands in the Visayas, while seawater intrusion is a looming threat to Metro Manila, home to 13 million people. In the Manila Bay area, the sea is rising by 12.13 mm per year, about four times the global average, according to a study by the Coastal Sea Level Rise Philippines Project (CSLR-Phil), which used tide gauges and satellite measurements.

In an era of rising sea levels, resilient and adaptable architecture is crucial. The AGAY residence, a 240 sq. m. home in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, situated along the Mactan Channel coast, prioritizes adaptive design for sea level rise. The design incorporates natural materials like wood and stone for a cozy feel, with strategically placed large windows offering stunning coastal views and ample natural light.

DAHUYO PROJECT Course: Architectural Design 3 Team: BELTRAN, Kathleen; DE CHAVEZ, Teresa; MARQUEZ, Nicholas; SOLIMAN, Gianna; YODICO, Jackelyn Type: Glamping Accommodation Role: Design and Visualization
Our project embodies the essence of providing a serene and rejuvenating getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. In our pursuit of designing cabin accommodations for campers, visitors, and tourists, the core objective was to create a space where individuals could disconnect from the urban chaos and immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature. This essence is deeply ingrained in every aspect of our design.

Furthermore, the incorporation of layers of roofing enhances not only the aesthetic appeal but also fosters a connection with the elements, allowing for natural ventilation and the play of sunlight to create an ambiance of tranquility. The balance between symmetrical and asymmetrical designs adds visual intrigue and ensures that the exteriors of our cabins are not only visually pleasing but also evoke a sense of serenity and wonder, ultimately fulfilling our goal of providing a calming escape from the city.
18
The decision to mimic the sporadic growth of mushrooms in our design concept reflects our commitment to organic and harmonious aesthetics. By embracing curvilinear roofing patterns, we introduce a sense of fluidity and coherence that mirrors the natural world. The use of vernacular materials like wood and bamboo not only blends seamlessly with the environment but also invokes a sense of connection to the earth.

TUMAHON PROJECT Course: Architectural Design 5 Team: SOLIMAN, Gianna; YODICO, Jackelyn Type: Adaptive Typology: Public Market to Evacuation Center Role: Design and Visualization
Marikina City submerges whenever typhoons leave the city more ravaged than other vicinities of Metro Manila. As porous spaces help mitigate flooding, the development of establishments aggravated their vulnerability to floods. Along the streets of Barangay Tumana, Singkamas is one of the area experiencing these problems firsthand. Thus, the project aims to create a typology that changes in elevation as it adapts to various rises of water levels. It intends to alleviate their situation by boosting community engagement and adaptive capacity through a public market as it transforms into an evacuation center.
26
The project also seeks to promote sustainable urban planning and infrastructure design by incorporating green and resilient features. This includes the integration of rain gardens, permeable pavements, and flood-resistant building materials to reduce the impact of flooding on the community. Furthermore, the initiative emphasizes education and awareness campaigns to empower residents with knowledge on disaster preparedness and climate change resilience. By addressing both the physical and social aspects of flood vulnerability, the project aims to create a safer and more resilient future for the residents of Singkamas and other vulnerable areas in Marikina City.

KAHILOM PROJECT Course: Architectural Design 6 Team: YODICO, Jackelyn Type: Park and Recreational Space Role: Design and Visualization
The Kahilom Project is a community-driven initiative located in Batasan Hills, Quezon City, addressing the stark contrast between its urban poor and middle to upper-class neighborhoods. Serving as a unifying force, the project aims to provide a muchneeded shared public space, aptly named “Kahilom,” meaning “to heal” in Tagalog. This multifaceted endeavor encompasses a library, vertical community garden, playground, fitness area, and a plaza, fostering social cohesion and interaction among diverse communities. Moreover, Kahilom Project contributes to environmental resilience by incorporating flood mitigation strategies such as efficient drainage systems, green infrastructure, and water management principles, crucial for this low to moderate flood-prone region. In essence, this endeavor seeks to promote unity, relaxation, and healing for all residents while addressing pressing environmental challenges.

LIBRARY Batasan Hills has one of the largest populations in Quezon City. It is also famous for having the most populated population in secondary schools in Quezon City. Despite the school’s population, the school’s library does not meet the needs of the students. Therefore, this project proposes a public library, free to use for students and citizens of the area.

VERTICAL GARDEN A vertical community garden can serve as a platform to initiate interaction and bridge the gap between the two social classes present in the site. By providing a shared space for both the urban poor and other residents, the garden creates opportunities for people from different backgrounds to come together, interact, and collaborate on a common goal. The act of tending to the garden and nurturing the plants can become a unifying activity that transcends socioeconomic differences. People can exchange knowledge and expertise, share gardening techniques, and learn from one another’s experiences. This interaction fosters a sense of community and solidarity, breaking down barriers and promoting empathy and understanding between individuals from different social classes.
