Southwest Florida Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. On Sunday morning, September 25, 2022, along the beautiful Southwest Gulf Coast of Florida under the leadership of National President Kornisha McGill Brown and Southeastern Regional Director Darlene McGhee Whittington, and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter’s sponsorship, 21 courageous, dynamic, and determined mothers proudly chartered the Southwest Florida Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. with boundaries inclusive of Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties. These mothers, their 40 wonderfully and fearfully made children, and 17 supportive fathers have created a LEGACY for future generations to continue developing Leaders Emerging with Greatness in Academics and Cultural Awareness while Yearning for Excellence in the Southwest Florida area. Immediately following the Chartering Ceremony, the newly installed chapter was greeted by family and friends during a beautiful celebration luncheon at Pelican Preserve Golf Club in Fort Myers, Florida. It was indeed a family affair! Those in attendance could feel the love radiating in the atmosphere as the young “Jacks” and “Jills” paraded into the room dressed in their Sunday best waving their pink and blue flags as they presented their mothers with roses and hugs. The Father’s Auxiliary, chaired by Dad James Holloway, presented the mothers with a chapter plaque as they expressed their love and appreciation for the mothers' dedication and commitment to their children. National President Kornisha McGill Brown gave the Charge centered around the chapter’s theme, “Building a Legacy of Leadership & Excellence for All Children”. Southeastern Regional Director Darlene McGhee Whittington presented the chapter with a beautiful customized vertical banner. Guests enjoyed a delicious lunch serenaded by Teen President Kheenon Jackson and violinist Lena Rodgriguez. Southwest Florida Chapter’s sponsoring chapter, The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chapter showered the new chapter with many personalized gifts and inspirational messages. At the close of the chartering celebration, the “Jacks” and “Jills” were escorted to a private Ice Cream Social where they enjoyed fellowshipping with their friends as they celebrated their first official “Jack and Jill Day”. Charter Members include Organizer and President Autumn Watkins Holloway, Vice President Shadreka McIntosh, Program Director Adrianna Burrows, Treasurer Kiondra Henderson, Recording Secretary Shangriah Roberts, Corresponding Secretary Tabbatha Carter, Financial Secretary Margo Ward, Editor Carloncia Hogan, Parliamentarian Tenisia Tyre, Chaplain Tiffany PoweSalters, Historian Angelia Sakyi-Agyekem, Lead Teen Sponsor Nateefah Jackson, Sergeant-at-Arms Lashunda Watkins, Foundation Chair Keiana Desmore, and Mothers: Tamara Clarke, Lauren Daniels, Brandi Hall, Ashli Little, Lynne Peterson, Melisa Pierce, and Tamika Woods.

Athens Chapter Moms at MWD 2022

Athens For veteran member moms, being able to usher a brand new member mom through the experience of MWD is a fun chance to strengthen the bonds of sisterly relations within the chapter. These reflections of new mom Daphne Esho express clearly how valuable this weekend is to new and veteran moms alike. “MWD was an incredible experience! The love, appreciation, and dedication to the organization was apparent in every way. I attended sessions, Protecting Your Peace and Count on Me, I am My Sisters Keeper. Both sessions touched on areas that I have been struggling with- enforcing boundaries and being vulnerable and asking for help. I walked away from those sessions excited to implement the teachings and bring more balance and peace to my life. The fellowship with my current chapter moms was needed being that I am new to the chapter and I enjoyed getting to know them on a deeper level. I look forward to attending more regional and national events and becoming more involved. I walked away energized and excited to create programming that is impactful but fun for our children that is #Always On Mission and On Purpose.”

Atlanta As nonprofits nationwide struggle to meet the heightened demand for services and regain their footing on the heels of the pandemic, the Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. extended a helping hand in October to charities with its flagship fundraiser, “Bold Lips + Bow Ties 5: A Day Party with a Purpose.” The event brought together 1,500 Atlanta professionals and dignitaries for an afternoon of philanthropy, fashion, fellowship and dance. This sold-out event was Sunday, October 9 at The Gathering Spot in Atlanta. Beneficiaries of the event are the AFLAC Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta; the Jack and Jill of America Foundation; Kids’-Doc-on-Wheels; SEM Link, Inc.; and Silence the Shame, Inc.

Birmingham

We Remember You, Carole: The Birmingham Chapter Celebrates Carole Robinson Day On Sunday, September 25, 2022, The Birmingham Chapter assembled at Greenwood Cemetery to celebrate the life of our beloved Carole Robertson at the site of her resting place. The event was a joint program with the Carole Robertson and Family Worship Day Committees. Committee Teens gave a memorable salute to Carole as they took turns highlighting interests, hobbies and activities Carole enjoyed. All were dressed in attire representing those interests and shared a few words, each concluding by reciting the mantra: “We Remember You, Carole!” Teens dressed as girl and boy scouts, dancers, band members, active Jack and Jills serving the community and even as a young Carole – a visual of the young girl whose life of promise was taken too soon, but one whose memory will continue to live on. Regional Teen Foundation Chair, Kennedy Means and Chapter Teen President, Riley Ashford, delivered a wreath presentation followed by a historic presentation by Associate and Chair of the Carole Robertson Grave Preservation Project, Majella Chube-Hamilton. The chapter was honored to have family representative, Associate Gaile Pugh Gratton, Carole’s cousin, join us for the celebration. She provided words of gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the family. The program continued with a musical selection by Family Worship Committee Chair and Chapter Chaplain, Zay Allen and Teen Zion Allen, followed by a Litany of Faith, Hope and Love by Teen Chaplain Carrington Hodge, engaging guest participation. Remarks given by Committee Chairs, Denise Gregory and Zay Allen, Chapter President, Erica Edwards-Lankford and closing prayer by Pop Pastor, Darren Allen concluded our heartwarming program.

A highlight of the weekend was the beautiful President’s Toast to our National President Kornisha Brown, celebrating her election to a second term leading and guiding our illustrious organization. She was joined by Past National Presidents Shirley Barber James and Tamara Turnley Robinson, Past National Vice President Sylvia McGee, and Regional Leadership of the SER. We are PINK and BLUE proud of all that she will accomplish these next two years!! Greater Chattanooga Chapter Moms Journey to Savannah Six members of the Gracious Greater Chattanooga Chapter journeyed to Savannah together for an enlightening, fun-filled, and informative Mothers’ Workday (MWD). Renting a van and traveling together created an atmosphere of sisterly bonding; one, that Chapter President Latonya hopes the Chapter continues for future events. “It was good for my soul!” exclaimed Chapter Treasure Ronnetta. She enjoyed the travel time that gave the moms a chance to listen to one another. The traveling mothers laughed, danced, and were re-energized. Program Director LaTasha said the weekend reconfirmed her excitement about her family being a part of this great organization. She enjoyed getting to know her sister moms better. The best view of MWD is through the lens of one of our newest members, Mom Chariti Black. She attended the New Moms Workshop and was encouraged by National President Kornisha to get involved in order to enjoy her Jack and Jill experience to the fullest. As a result of MWD, Mom Chariti now understands how we work, play, and live together. “The bond that links … family is not one of blood, but one of respect and joy in each other’s life.” – Richard Bach

This retreat was one of the few in-person events that GNAC has hosted since the pandemic and provided an opportunity to welcome and fellowship with the nearly 125 chapter mothers. Closing down the event was difficult because moms truly enjoyed being together again. Indeed, this retreat gave a taste of what is to come - 2022-23 is going to be a great programming year! KUDOS to CP Kelly, Vice-President Amber Buchanan, and the Membership Committee for an excellent event.

Knoxville Chapter

(Fig 1: TNT Nia Vaughn TN Capital) A proposal that started as a mock bill written by Nia Vaughn, for the 2021 Southeastern Regional (SER) Jack & Jill Day at the Capitol, is now making its way through the Tennessee Legislature as a legitimate amendment. In May 2021, Nia’s elementary school teacher emailed parents with the news that she had run out of school supplies for her classroom and asked for supply donations. Around the same time, a plea was made to SER children and teens to submit a mock bill as a part of a Simulation Activity – How a Bill Becomes a Law for Children/Teen. In her teacher’s request, Nia identified a community need and this Virtual Jack and Jill Day gave her just the opportunity she needed to address the need. Nia drafted her mock bill with the goal of reducing the classroom financial burden on her teacher by allocating an additional $100 to every teacher in the state of Tennessee. After drafting the mock bill, she submitted as a part of the virtual event. The SER committee was so please with her submission, she received a regional level award. From this experience, the Knoxville Chapter saw a learning opportunity and planned a chapter day at the capital that December. The chapter-wide activity was hosted by State Representative Sam McKenzie, for Knoxville’s District 15, and two other members of the Tennessee Black Caucus. This impactful event met all five programmatic thrusts. The chapter was even able to add a little health to the activity by having families walk from the capital to the National

Knoxville Chapter

(Figure 2: Dad Clarence Vaughn, TNT Nia Vaughn, Primary Intermediate Jada Vaughn, and State Representative Sam Mckenzie) Museum of African American Music (NMAAM), clocking in around 8,000 steps for the day. Children and Teens enjoyed a little social, a little culture and a lot of education with the sounds of black music in an interactive technology experience presented by NMAAM. It goes without saying, the mock in-person legislative experience with a bill that will impact your education experience was one-of-a-kind. During the event, Nia presented her mock bill to the children and teens. The children and teens were allowed to ask questions and debate on the bill and submit a final vote at the Tennessee General Assembly. Naturally, the vote was passed by the children. After hearing Nia’s presentation of the mock bill, Representative McKenzie eagerly embraced the mock bill. In the state of Tennessee, House Bill 2605 (HB2604 “Basic Education Program” (BEP) establishes BEP funds to K-12 teachers for instructional supplies. With the help from Representative McKenzie Nia’s mock bill became a real amendment proposal. A whole year later, May 2022, Nia and Represented McKenzie formally presented her mock bill to the House K-12 Subcommittee at the capital. The amendment was so popular among House legislators it received bipartisan support. So much so, the committee requested that her amendment funds increase from $100 to $300 per teacher. Nia’s mock bill, now amendment, passed unanimously by the K-12 subcommittee would provide 66,400 K-12 teachers within Tennessee an additional $300 to supply their classrooms. While the amendment to HB2604 has already passed there are still hurdles the amendment would need to clear before it passes. In 2022, the Tennessee State Legislature was scheduled to adjourn on May 7 and will not reconvene until January 10, 2023. Representative McKenzie has committed to bring this amendment up again in the 2023 legislative session with the hopes to get it passed completely passed with Senator Richard Briggs serving as the Senate Sponsor. While on summer break in 2022, Nia didn’t stop the work. Nia presented her mock bill to her church leadership team. Nia is member of the Overcoming Believers Church of Knoxville, Tennessee, pastored by Daryl W. Arnold. Founder and Senior Pastor Arnold was so moved by her effort that he has led the charge to provide a $100 to each teacher in Knoxville’s seven underserved schools. That impact is over $50,000! If not for Jack and Jill, Nia would not have experienced the power of making a difference as a pre-teen. Starting this journey at eleven years old, Nia understands that her actions will impact over 60,000 teachers across Tennessee and almost one million students. This experience has not only inspired her but has inspired others around her to act. An idea that started as a simulation

activity at a virtual conference has and will make a real and meaningful difference. Nia a child who cannot vote has the power to make a difference in the lives of all Tennessee Children. Long live Jack and Jill

Carole Robertson Memorial Day was held on September 18, 2022 at Knoxville Public Works Building in Knoxville, TN (1pm -3pm). The chapter-wide activity was led by PD’s Shenika WelchCharles and Sheryl Houston. The Knoxville Chapter observed this special day in combination with Jack and Jill Day. The WWPI’s and TNT started their day making ice cream using an interactive STEM technique taught by Mom’s Clarice Phelps and Melba Kendrick. In honor of Carole Roberston, we heard from guest speaker Mrs. Gussie Cherry, a classmate of Caroles’. She talked about the impact of the Birmingham bombing and how it changed life as she knew it. Mrs. Cherry’s talk was captivating and educational. Our RT’s got an unique opportunity to have open dialogue with a Knoxville police officer. This fireside chat allowed the teens to get answers to their questions and learn how things work in the civil police system. The day concluded with each family writing a message of strength and hope on paper lanterns, followed by a lantern release ceremony.

Mothers Retreat The Savannah Chapter mothers jumpstarted the program year in-person with their Annual Mothers Retreat in August. The theme for the year is “Elevated to Serve—For the Children!” Our keynote presenter was our very own, RS Angelecia Latimore who reminded us to "Relax, Reflect and Move Forward” with self-care tips and survival treat bags for all moms. The mothers planned for the program year and added a splash of fun and picture time to end the day. Mothers came together to strategize and plan for a productive year. The day ended with all moms feeling energized and inspired for another program year.

Mothers Workday The Savannah Chapter was thrilled to serve as host chapter, alongside Regional Director Darlene Whittington and her Regional Executive Board, for the Southeastern Region’s 2022 Mothers Workday in Savannah, Georgia (October 7-8). The event theme was “Educated to Elevate Your Experience…And the Beat Goes On.” This musically amplified theme permeated through the entire event. The Friday Night Event was the talk of the town as mothers throughout the region came dressed to impress in their decade attire, and engaged in a friendly dress competition and of course, the infamous, “Finish the Lyrics,” game. The night continued with everyone “Dancing through the Decades.” Day two ringed in a Musically Hyped and Information Packed Opening Breakfast, Legends and Legacy Panel Discussion during the Grace Wyatt Luncheon, Impactful Workshops, and the historical chartering of two additional SER chapters—Golden Isles Chapter (Savannah Chapter sponsored) and Southern Crescent Chapter (Macon Chapter Sponsored). SER Mothers left their footprint in the sand as they gave back in a profound way to two local Savannah organizations--Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club ($6,000 for STEM program) and Greenbriar Children’s Center ($4,000 and donated over 10,000 diapers for new infant program).

Regional Mothers Work Day The Spectacular Stone Mountain Chapter mothers enjoyed the entirety of Southeast Regional Mothers Work Day held in Savannah, GA. The weekend launched with a wonderful opening session followed by a fun decades-themed moms night out celebration, “And the Beat Goes On.” Stone Mountain Chapter moms represented the best of the 1980s by donning their hip hop apparel reminiscent of legendary rap group Run DMC. Never one to miss a good competition, chapter moms entered the dance battle; albeit, they came up short of winning. Regardless, a great time was had by all bonding with mothers from across the Sweet, Sweet Southeastern Region. Stone Mountain Chapter mothers fully engaged in workshops to be On Mission. On Purpose and for the children, all children. Workshops included navigating taboo parenting topics and technology capacity building. Perhaps, the greatest event was the “Legends and Legacies” segment during the luncheon to hear from past teen presidents, a former national president and charter members of the host Savannah Chapter.

Tuskegee On October 7-8, 2022, the SER held its annual Mother’s Workday (“MWD”) in beautiful Savannah, Georgia. The theme was Educate to Elevate your Experience. Prior to the event, our chapter happily donated toward the MWD service project and were more than ready to educate themselves to elevate their experience. This year, the Tuskegee Chapter was elated to have several of our newly initiated Mothers join in this exciting experience. The annual event kicked off with training for a few of our financial and regional positions. As the beat went on, our moms danced the night away on Friday and dressed for their favorite decade. The Tuskegee Chapter chose the 70s in honor of our 70th year. Oh, what a night! This eventful and informative weekend culminated with education, education, education. The workshops were informative, and the Tuskegee Mothers were engaged! MWD is always a treat and we look forward to representing Tuskegee for years to come.
