Atlanta Chapter History

T

The Atlanta Chapter was organized in February of 1951 through the effort of Mrs. Elizabeth Macomson, a teacher at Spelman College. An Albany Chapter member suggested to her that our city should establish this mother’s organization. Initially, it was a small group of mothers who were affiliated with the various schools in the Atlanta University Center Consortium. Mrs. Helen Bell Robinson Brooks, a colleague, invited the group to organize in her home at 988 Westmoor Drive. By installation time on September 16, 1951, there were 34 mothers in the Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill. The following were the first officers: Elizabeth Macomson, president; Mrs. Mexico Mickelbury, secretary; Mrs. Helen Bell Robinson Brooks, treasurer; Mrs. Jewel Simon and Toki Connally, co-chairmen of program committee; Mrs. Alice Holmes Washington, reporter to the national organization; and Mrs. Johnnie Yancey, chairman of the membership committee. The first members were as follows: Ernestine Brazeal, Miriam Burney, Harriet Chisholm, Ernestine Comer, Billie Davis, Grace DeLorme, Louis Eagleson, Jacqueline Frye, Sadie Gaines, Ann Graves, Gertrude Hackney, Marge Harper, Freddye Henderson, Dorthea Hill, Juliette Jackson, Ruth Jackson, Betty Boyd Mapp, Gladys Powell, Marion Scott, Ruth Scott, Clara Singleton, Juanita Smith, Lavada Smith, Helen Westerfield, Virginia Whatley, Beatrice Williams, and Irene Wilson. Mrs. Edna Seay of Buffalo, New York, national president of Jack and Jill of America for that year, flew in for the installation as she was touring recently established chapters in the south. Mrs. Seay stressed the “value emotional stability and security play in developing healthy and happy children” that would become the parents of tomorrow. A charter member, Helen Robinson Brooks, stated that finding activities for the children that were entertaining, educational, and mind grabbing was a real challenge for the mothers. The Atlanta Chapter children were the first Black children to participate in a then-popular WSB-TV puppet show called “Woody Willow.” Activity was a key word for the children who participated in swimming, basketball, softball, and other seasonal sports on Saturdays at the YMCA. There were monthly meetings with dramatics, soap carving, sewing, dancing, music, and games. By the middle and late 1950s, the chapter mothers and children were established in charity projects. During this period, the children sent woolen mittens to needy children in a foreign country selected by the American Friends Committee. They carried gifts to hospitalized children. The project of the year for the mothers was an Annual Charity Ball to raise money for multiple selected charities. The mothers participated in the Polio March, and they adopted needy families. While the 1950s represents the genesis of the Atlanta Chapter’s increased involvement in the Atlanta community through charitable projects, the Chapter’s involvement in the community did not end there. For the decades to follow, the Chapter has been heavily entrenched in the Atlanta community, serving the city in times of peace and strife. 6

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. – Atlanta Chapter History

The Atlanta Chapter developed a community service program that reflects its mission of service. The outreach initiatives focus on four main areas: Women’s Health, Children’s Health, The Environment, and Underprivileged Youth. By focusing our efforts in these areas, the Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill is positioned to positively impact and improve the lives of those we serve in the Metro Atlanta community. As such, we have been fortunate to support well over fifty charitable organizations since the Chapter’s chartering, including, for example, The East Lake Foundation, Raising Expectations, American Cancer Society, Trees Atlanta, Cool Girls, the March of Dimes, the Ronald McDonald House Charity, the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Foreverfamily, Solomon’s Temple, Carrie Steele-Pitts Home, C.H.O.I.C.E.S., Telic Empowerment, the Black Women’s Health Imperative/SIS Circle, Silence the Shame, SEM Link, and Kids’-Doc-onWheels. During the 2021-2022 program year, our youngest Jacks and Jills organized a book drive benefiting the Nicholas House and The Department of Family and Child Services, and our Atlanta Chapter Teens held a successful blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross, which was highlighted on the Georgia Red Cross website during Red Cross Month. In addition to our service initiatives and support of local charitable organizations, the Atlanta Chapter has a rich and long-held tradition of supporting the March of Dimes. For the past six years, the Atlanta Chapter has honored this tradition by being the top non-family team for the Atlanta March for Babies event and one of the top two fundraisers for March of Dimes among all chapters within Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Setting the gold standard for philanthropy within the organization, the Atlanta Chapter raised over $30,000 in both 2018 and 2019 and has raised over $20,000 each year since. The members of the Atlanta Chapter conceptualized the signature social event Bold Lips + Bow Ties, a chic and highly experiential adult day party—with a purpose. This much-anticipated event was first held during the Fall of 2016, in celebration of our 65th Anniversary, and returned, by popular demand, in the Fall of 2022. Selling out in less than six hours after tickets went on sale, BLBT5 raised close to $300,000.00 for the benefit of the Jack and Jill Foundation and selected local charities. This event consistently takes the chapter’s philanthropic contributions to the next level. A noteworthy period in the chapter’s history and in world history, the latter part of the 2019-2020 program year and the 2020-2021 program year brought unimaginable challenges, inconveniences, and fears due to the COVID-19 pandemic and racial and political unrest that gripped the country; yet, through creativity and with relentless resilience, the Atlanta Chapter remained on mission and on purpose. We spent most of this time period quarantining in our homes, and we continued the business and programming of the chapter primarily using the Zoom platform. During the few occasions when we were able to gather in person, we had to be socially distanced and masked. While the COVID-19 pandemic continued during the 2021-2022 program year, vaccinations allowed the return of some in-person programming activities and events, including, for example, Jack and Jill Day, Brunch of Champions, Mothers’ Luncheon, and regional and national conferences and conventions. Innovative approaches still were necessary, however, for the celebration of the Chapter’s highly anticipated 70th Anniversary. We kicked off the festivities with a 70th Anniversary Launch Party, which was virtually set at the Atlanta History Center, using the Topia platform, and celebrated “70 Years of Quiet Power.” Members received 70th Anniversary Celebration boxes, fellowshipped with one another, 7

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. – Atlanta Chapter History

viewed historical Chapter artifacts, and reveled at the reveal of the commissioned painting, also entitled “Quiet Power,” by iconic artist Dr. Fahamu Pecou. Our Atlanta Chapter Jacks and Jills immediately began spreading the word about this stunning painting with the wildly successful “I Am Art” Challenge on social media, beautifully recreating pieces of Dr. Pecou’s art. Sales of signed and numbered prints of the commissioned art piece, along with other merchandise, netted the Atlanta Chapter over $50,000 for the benefit of the Jack and Jill Foundation and Black Women’s Health Imperative. Telling the story of the Atlanta Chapter’s impactful legacy, which, in the words of Dr. Pecou, is rooted in the “matriarchal promise . . . of preservation and preparation of sons and daughters to rise to their highest potential for even higher purposes,” the piece is now traveling throughout the state of Georgia and will be on display at various museums until April 2024. The Atlanta Chapter continued to celebrate its 70th Anniversary with monthly history moments at meetings, a focus on Chapter history interwoven throughout programming activities, and a unique oral history project featuring our children and teens and past Programming Chairs and Program Directors of the Atlanta Chapter--“Programming with Pardonable Pride Through the Years.” In October of 2022, the beautiful families of the Atlanta Chapter were grateful to finally gather as a group in person at the Atlanta History Center for a memorable celebration of the chapter’s 70th Anniversary. Combined with the anniversary celebration were Jack and Jill Day and the Carole Robertson Observance, which gave all attendees a perfect mix of fun, connection, and interesting, incomparable history. Due to the rich legacy of the City of Atlanta, the Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill is humbled and fortunate to have close ties to the nation’s civil rights history. For decades, the Chapter has welcomed into its membership family members of known civil rights leaders. The Atlanta Chapter has been home to members of the Abernathy, King, Jackson, and Young families, who represent leadership from the Civil Rights Movement, as well as the first and second African-American mayors of the City of Atlanta and Congressman John Lewis, a civil rights icon and champion of change. Through the membership of his wife, Lillian Miles Lewis, Congressman Lewis was active in the Atlanta Chapter from 1980-1994. Always generous with his time and a true servant of those whom he represented; Congressman Lewis engaged often with the families of the Atlanta Chapter. Special and unforgettable memories include his participation as a panelist at the Atlanta Chapter’s 50th Anniversary Black History Program and a walk with Atlanta Chapter families across the Edmund Pettus Bridge when the chapter took a trip to Selma for Black History Month. Congressman Lewis also kindly hosted many On the Hill Summit attendees over the years, including during the On the Hill Summit in September 2019. During those visits, Congressman Lewis shared firsthand accounts of civil rights history and recalled memories of his remarkable life. The Holmes family also shares in this rich legacy of breaking racial barriers with the integration of two universities. Many of the families, including the Holmes family, have spanned several generations of active membership. The willingness of each family member to share their individual stories has proven to be a valuable asset to the Chapter through the years, helping to instill pride in the accomplishments of African-Americans in this nation’s history. In 2017, Atlanta Chapter member Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected the 60th Mayor of Atlanta. She was the city’s second female mayor and gained attention on the national political stage during her tenure. 8

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. – Atlanta Chapter History

Notwithstanding her demanding schedule, especially during the global pandemic, she made herself available to Atlanta Chapter families and families throughout Jack and Jill, sharing lessons learned as a leader and public servant and inspiring the next generation of leaders. With respect to leadership within Jack and Jill, the Atlanta Chapter has had several members to serve in leadership positions at the national and regional levels. Dr. Mirian C. Shropshire, who gained her heavenly wings on October 1, 2021, blazed the trail for Atlanta Chapter members ascending to leadership on the national level. She was elected as National Recording Secretary of the organization in 1968 and then was elected as the Ninth National President in 1970, leading more than 129 chapters. Dr. Shropshire was re-elected to serve as National President in 1972 and followed that up by serving two terms as National Treasurer in 1974 and 1976. Other Atlanta Chapter members rendering exemplary service on the national and regional levels include Alma Vinyard - National Recording Secretary (1990-1992) (Note: NRS Vinyard was a member of the West Suburban Chicago Chapter at the time of her service but later transferred to and tenured out of the Atlanta Chapter); Patrise Perkins-Hooker – National Treasurer (2000- 2002); Marjorie Belton Settles – Southeastern Regional Director (2001-2005); Marjorie Mitchell – Southeastern Regional Secretary/Treasurer (2009-2011) and Southeastern Regional Director (2011-2013); and Rebecca Young – Southeastern Regional Treasurer (2017-2019). Our Atlanta Chapter teens likewise have an established legacy of leadership on the regional level. Tenured member Marcia Beavers Days was elected to serve as the first Southeastern Regional Teen President on the campus of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, in the summer of 1955. Other known past regional teen officers include Max Starks – Regional Teen President; Harold Dawson – Regional Teen President; Shelley Crooks – Regional Teen Vice President; Staci Patterson – Regional Teen Vice President; Saige-Simone Haynes – Regional Teen Vice President; Lisa Mitchell – Regional Teen SecretaryTreasurer; Aaron Cheese – Regional Teen Foundation Chair. Most recently, Atlanta Chapter Senior Teen Blake Haynes was elected at the 66th Annual Regional Teen Leadership Conference to serve as Regional Teen Secretary for the 2022-2023 program year. The Atlanta Chapter is building leaders for today, tomorrow, and for years to come. The Atlanta Chapter continues to meet the aims of the national organization by providing experiences that aid mothers to learn more about their children by careful study. Through our community service projects, we seek to offer all children the same advantages that we desire for our own. Embracing the national organization’s “We Are One” initiative and commitment, we have extended our programming to include activities that take into consideration children with different abilities and that support the following curricular areas: African American History and Culture Leadership Development Community Service Civic Awareness and Responsibility Life Management Skills Health, Nutrition & Fitness Fine Arts Appreciation Finance and Economics Career Development 9

SECTION 2 National Recognition Days

12

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. – Atlanta Chapter History National Recognition Days

Jack and Jill Day (September 17, 2023) This is our official program year kickoff, which brings the entire family together with music, games, food, fellowship and fun. The chapter-wide event includes a recognition and celebration of Carole Robertson as well as activities around health, nutrition, fitness, community service, recreation and STEAM events. This year we will celebrate our opening Family Fun Day at Riverside EpiCenter on September 17. Families will enjoy rock climbing, bowling, basketball, pool arcade games. Our families will also get to see part of the award-winning step-show. In addition, there will be quiet spaces for board games and sensory activities.

Carole Robertson Memorial Day (September 17, 2023) The Atlanta Chapter recognized Carole Robertson during our annual chapter family fun day and Jack and Jill Day, September 17, 2023. As a tribute to Carole, chapter members watched an interview video highlighting the life of Carole Robertson. After the video, our activity host children orated Carole's history in remembrance and appreciation of the great sacrifice her family has made for the rights we have today. Carole Robertson is so much more than our heroine now; she is a symbol that motivates us all to lead a life of sacrifice for others.

MLK Day of Service (January 15, 2024) Our Atlanta Chapter Community Service chairs in coordination with all grade group January host moms are planning eight local community service opportunities in eleven locations around the city. All these projects will be chapter-wide so that our families, whatever their age-makeup, can participate together. All will fall during the month of January (6th – 21st) to coincide with The King Center’s 2024 observance themed “IT STARTS WITH ME: Shifting the cultural climate through the study and practice of Kingian Nonviolence.” We plan for our activities to include the following: Partnering with Blessings in a Backpack, Partnering with Our Giving Garden, Partnering with The Atlanta Community Food Bank Educating our youth and parents about our MSA’s Center for children and Young Adults and Partnering with Meals on Wheels.

Founders’ Day (January 18, 2024) As Jack and Jill of America, Inc. prepares to celebrate a milestone 86th year of existence, in the spirit of unity and purposeful collaboration, The Atlanta Chapter will celebrate Jack and Jill Founders’ Day in January of 2024. It will be a day of celebration, remembrance, and rededication to our beloved Jack and Jill of America, Inc. We will honor our founders, engage in motherly love, and ignite our passion to do more. As is customary when we celebrate Founders’ Day, we also will recognize descendants of the Atlanta Chapter Charter Members who currently hold membership in the Atlanta Chapter. We will 13

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. – Atlanta Chapter History National Recognition Days

invite past national and regional officers who held or currently hold membership in the Atlanta Chapter to be our special guests, as well as our precious Associate Jewels and prospective new members.

National Black Family Day: “Family Day Fun!!” (May 20, 2024) We will end the 23-24 Programming year celebrating the Black Family. Specifically, the Atlanta Chapter will be celebrating our May traits of the Flexibility, Trust, Strength and Patience necessary to be focused, resilient and fruitful in our goals together. The Atlanta Chapter of Jack & Jill will observe National Black Family Day by having a fun-filled game day in the park at Westside Park in Atlanta. We’ll encourage families to bring picnic lunches, blankets, and chairs, while we provide the fun. Using activities from the BOKS Early Childhood/Elementary/Middle School/High School Curricula, from kickball games, to badminton, to jump rope, our families will spend the day together laughing, talking, and bonding. Enjoying each other and simply valuing their loved ones' presence will be the ultimate goal.

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. – Atlanta Chapter Annual Program Planning Meeting 2023 - 2024

2023-2024 Program Planning Meeting In preparation for our 2023-2024 Program Year, on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at 4:00pm to 6:00pm, our new elected Programming Leadership Team -- to include Program Director (PD) Tamika Chambers, Assistant Program Director (APD) PK-6 India Epps and APD 7-12 Christina Miller, and Immediate Past Program Director (IPPD) Felicia Jones Nickerson, provided a training to focus on what it means to plan intentionally inviting, exciting and purposeful programming including the character traits necessary to nurture the next generation of servant leaders. Our agenda was as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

National Programming requirements, strategically Regional Programming opportunities Chapter Programming team Roles and responsibilities Programming activity highlights Program Planning in the Atlanta Chapter Grade Group Brainstorming hosted by GLSs Wrap-up Q&A

During the Virtual Programming Retreat, over 110 mothers in attendance were given pertinent information on National Programming Thrusts, as embodied by Atlanta Chapter Character traits and Curriculum Goals, to incorporate into drafts of their monthly activity planning. GLSs (Grade Level Sponsors) and coordinators were directed to guide our mother members throughout the late Spring and early Summer using previously provided information describing national, regional, and chapter requirements, planning suggestions and timeline, roles and responsibilities, grade group calendar templates, rosters of grade group members (mothers and children), and a monthly activity planning (MAP) tool kit to distribute to and provide support for their grade groups and grade bands respectively. Updated electronic versions of the aforementioned items were provided to GLSs prior to their refresher training. Mid-retreat, GLSs lead their respective grade groups in a grade group specific session to brainstorm on monthly programming activity ideas and assist moms to implement changes in processes and procedures for better implementation in activities throughout the program year. 2023 Grade-level Sponsor (GLS) Training Shortly after our 2023 Programming Retreat, a specialized training was held for new and returning GLSs and Teen Coordinators. During GLS training, the incoming Programming Leadership Team reviewed with sponsors and coordinators the tools provided by our National Programming Committee and National Curriculum Ad-hoc Committees. We shared how the methods developed by the Atlanta Chapter in its Monthly Activity Planning process will help to cultivate and support programming enrichment within their own grade groups and the grade levels that they support. In addition, based on a review of evaluation summaries provided by the majority of programming months of the 2022-23 year on whether we are on track to nurture in the way we set forth, we will conduct a listening post to incorporate ideas to improve processes and procedures based on feedback from our mother members and the observations of our GLSs and coordinators. We will also take the time to ensure that all are on board to capture the modules, lessons and webinar credits to ensure that children and teens complete the required national programming thrusts.

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. – Atlanta Chapter Annual Program Planning Meeting 2023 - 2024

2024 Programming Retreat The 2023 Atlanta Chapter Programming Retreat will be hosted by our in-coming Programming Leadership Team on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 4:00pm in a hybrid model to connect with our mothers both in-person and virtually. During the Programming Retreat, all mothers in attendance will be given pertinent information on National Programming Thrusts and any then-current National Areas of Focus, as embodied by Atlanta Chapter Character traits and Curriculum Goals, to incorporate into their monthly activity planning. GLSs and coordinators will be directed to previously provided information describing national, regional, and chapter requirements, planning suggestions and timeline, roles and responsibilities, grade group calendar templates, rosters of grade group members (mothers and children), and a monthly activity planning (MAP) tool kit to distribute to and provide support for their grade groups and grade bands respectively. Updated electronic versions of the aforementioned items will be provided to GLSs prior to the retreat. Mid-retreat, GLSs will lead their grade group in a grade group specific session to brainstorm on monthly programming activity ideas and assist moms to implement changes in processes and procedures for better implementation in activities throughout the program year. Grade Group Planning Following the Programming Retreat, GLSs will hold individual activity planning sessions with their respective grade groups throughout the month of May - June 2024 to finalize monthly activities and planning for the 2024-25 programming year. Using the meeting method and location of choice and armed with information from their children about activity preferences, each group of moms will come together to finish developing monthly “but for Jack and Jill” programming in an effort to continue nurturing being one chapter with one vision and one voice to support our children as the next generations of servant leaders. During these sessions, mothers will discuss the character traits and experiences that they wish their children to gain through specific experiences, who their kids are as people, and their children’s preferences. Following these conversations led by GLSs, equipped with National and local tools, our mother members will plan their 2024-25 activity calendars. In some cases -particularly those groups with older children and teens -- the children and teens will directly participate in activity planning. Teen Planning Sessions Junior and Senior Teen Officers will work and play in May 2024 to discuss initial ideas for teen activities to be held separately from grade group activities. The group will discuss teen social, fundraisers, and leadership events that will include modules. In early to mid-September 2024, the entire Junior and Senior Teen general bodies will meet, led by their respective Executive Boards, for a meeting to further develop teen activities that will be held during the year. Teens will continue to meet as scheduled over the course of the programming year, both in person and via webinars and conference calls, to finalize and execute teen activities – all geared toward becoming the NEXT generation of servant leaders.
