#InTheCloud in 2017 – the road ahead We will not make this into another ‘trends in 2017’ blog. There’s been enough of those written. There have been countless analyses of tech trends and big forecasts. Even we did our take on the tech trends that we think will rule in 2017 for sure.

As stated in that blog, no doubt the Internet of Things (IoT) has been the most talked about technology for the past few years.

In 2017, IoT will be on fire.

IoT will be the reason that will drive Cloud in the organizations (actually they will complement each other). IoT has implications that mandates companies to migrate in the Cloud. There is terabytes and terabytes of data being generated because of IoT. Analysis of all this data is needed and, that is possible, in the Cloud (or #InTheCloud). Can you imagine the amount of data being generated with IoT devices like the following?  Wearable computing devices –these are the most mainstream type of IoT devices available today primarily to monitor health and fitness of the wearer.  Smart toothbrush – Can you imagine your toothbrush storing all information like where it goes in your mouth, duration of the brush, the last date it was used, etc.  Automatic car parking adapter – Keep a track of your parked car from your smartphone or make sure your family is safe on the road with an adapter that can be plugged to your dashboard.  Smart bulbs – Lighting your room with your smartphone? Yes, with smart bulbs you can control your room’s bulb, dim it, change colors and even play some music.

In the coming days, even the car you’re driving will become a hub of data. Auto manufactures are tracking the driving behavior of customers but how does that information become useful? It will allow insurance companies to offer discounts to policyholders based on their driving habits. Even in the Fleet Management industry, movement and driving behaviors of drivers can be monitored and be extremely helpful to fleet managers.

All the above IoT devices sound really intriguing and exciting but also imagine the amount of data being generated. Mobile applications, cloud computing and of course Internet of Things (IoT) is generating loads and loads of data, like never before.

Every industry, like manufacturing, healthcare, home appliances and others, are working on producing IoT devices, better than the one before, to consumers. This improvement is data driven, and not only that but also is cloud-driven. Can you imagine that Cisco has recently predicted that, as high as 92% of all workloads are already #InTheCloud, and IoT driven big data is the driving force behind this evolution. It has also been predicted that the year 2020 will experience database, analytics and IoT workloads accounting for for 22% of total business workloads.

And the total amount of data that IoT will generate will be in zetabytes. Yes zetabytes.

How can an organization, is such a situation, continue to depend on-premises servers and storage? Such data surge can only be managed effectively when data is stored in the cloud. It will give the capability to organizations to manage data surges and workload spikes.

Experts say that the full potential of IoT can only be unleashed with a combination of cloud computing and big data. The otherwise irregular influx of data, generated

by IoT devices, can be managed (managed efficiently) with #InTheCloud.

What else is to come?

2017 will be the year when enterprises will move into Private Cloud or Hybrid Cloud Surveys show that in 2017, there will be a major trend of migrating workloads from existing public cloud to private cloud on-premises. The major reason for this shift is that enterprises have a high number of applications that, regulatory compliance or data sovereignty, cannot be run on public cloud. It can run cheaper on private cloud. If 2016 was primarily the year of multi-cloud (hybrid combination of Public and Private Cloud), 2017 will be the year of managing it.
