The historic neighborhood of Benson, Omaha has history dating back to 1877 when it was originally platted. Currently, it is home to numerous, robust small businesses in buildings with rich character. The idea for this project is predicting where Benson will be 20 years, and masterplanning according to the needs in that predicted reality.
In a group it was decided to develop Benson as a denser district combining multiple programs into more comprehensive buildings, providing rich diversity in business to strengthen local economic ties in the neighborhood. Keeping true to the current and future needs of Benson while considering changing urban systems is a necessary skill for developing functional urban landscapes.
Buildings shape a void that landscape architects develop into functional spaces including wide pedestrian walkways, bus only street sections, series of pocket parks, and many urban plazas borne out of the desire for social and environmental resiliency.
