Jacaranda Books Art Music Ltd is a fresh and exciting new independent publishing house based in London. We publish adult fiction and nonfiction, including illustrated books, across linguistic, racial, gender and cultural boundaries – books in many ways as cosmopolitan as our city.

Through our publishing, we directly address the ongoing lack of diversity in the industry today, and seek to enrich the landscape from boardroom to bookshelf.

We aim to bring authors and books that represent the cultural, heritage and ethnic variety that can be found in London, with a particular interest in works related to Africa, the Caribbean, and African America.

At the heart of our publishing strategy is one core element: a love of outstanding, thought-provoking work.

We believe that a wealth of unheard, under-represented voices exist globally and are ready to be discovered. It is our mission to create the space for those voices to be seen and heard by new readers.

The Elephant and the Bee charts the travels of a modern day explorer and visionary who tackles the enormous challenges of aid in Africa, environmental concerns and conservation issues, with all the internet-derived hubris of today’s youth. It is at once a hurricane of energy and a sobering compendium with hard fought lessons and guidance for anyone who believes in their ability to stand up, shout out and make a difference. When Oprah says, “Be all you can be” and “Live your best life”, Jess believes the former and is dedicated to the latter.

In 2014 Jess won The Africa book Club Short Reads competition with her story The Honey Man. She now works as a beekeeper in Kenya and is still on a mission to one day save the world. The Elephant and the Bee is her first book.

A graduate of the University of Reading, her career in Human Resources Management, Training and Consultancy, spans the UK and Africa. She is the recipient of several awards, and in 2011 was nominated as one of the Top 20 Inspirational Females from the Africa Diaspora in Europe. She is the author of non-fiction titles Everyday Heroes and I Want to Work in Africa, and the novel From Pasta to Pigfoot (see p. 15).

PEDE HOLLIST is an associate professor of English at The University of Tampa, Florida. Born in Sierra Leone, Pede studied in London for a number of years before moving to the United States. His interests cover the literature of the African imagination— literary expressions in the African continent as well as in the African diaspora.

Pede’s short stories have appeared in Ìrìnkèrindò: A Journal of African Migration, on the Sierra Leone Writers Series website, and in Matatu 41-12 respectively. His short story Foreign Aid was shortlisted for the 2013 Caine Prize for African Writing.

So the Path Does Not Die is his first novel.

FISTON MWANZA MUJILA was born in 1981 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, where he went to a catholic school before studying Literature and Human Sciences at Lubumbashi University. He now lives in Graz, Austria and is pursuing a PHD in Romance Languages. His writing has been awarded with numerous prizes, including the Gold Medal at the 6th Jeux de la Francophonie in Beirut as well as the Best Text for Theater (“Preis für das beste Stück”, State Theater, Mainz) in 2010.

Tram 83, originally published in French in August 2014 by Éditions Métailié, is his first novel, and has been shortlisted for and won numerous literary prizes in France and Austria, and has been translated into eight languages.

PATRICK WILMOT was born in Jamaica in 1942.

A graduate of Yale and Vanderbilt, Dr. Wilmot taught Political Sociology at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria for 18 years and was a political advisor and speechwriter. In 1988, he was abducted by Nigerian security police and forcibly ‘retired’ to London.

He has published various academic textbooks and articles, short stories and poetry. In London he comments on African affairs for radio and TV stations. Patrick’s debut novel was Seeing Double (Cape, 2005/Vintage, 2012).
