This past year has seen some outstanding achievements for us at Jacaranda as we move further into developing our voice and building our identity as a publisher. TRAM 83, our Man Booker International longlisted novel, and BUTTERFLY FISH, a recent Betty Trask Award winner, provide the industry-wide sanction any new company craves and requires.

The old adage: ‘start as you mean to go on’ sees us looking at an autumn list no less thought-provoking or exciting. Accomplished American novelist Bernice L. McFadden provides our fiction feature for the season with THE BOOK OF HARLAN, while British historian Stephen Bourne takes us back to the jazz age of the 1920s with an illustrated biography of cabaret star EVELYN DOVE. Publishing today is not for the faint of heart and it requires nerves of steel. Our belief in ourselves as a company championing diversity, our respect and passion for the many brilliant authors we have discovered and who have discovered us, and our internal development as a vibrant house of four very vocal and high-spirited women, gives me the confidence and the energy to look beyond the current social turmoil and to view our success as a solid company for many years to come.

STEPHEN BOURNE has been specialising in black British histories since 1991. He has written over 15 books, including the acclaimed Black in the British Frame, Elisabeth Welch: Soft Lights and Sweet Music and The Motherland Calls: Britain’s Black Servicemen and Women 1939-1945.

Stephen received the 2015 Southwark Arts Forum Award for Literature for Black Poppies: Britain’s Black Community and the Great War. He is a regular contributor to BBC documentaries and has written for many publications, including The Voice, The Independent, BBC History Magazine and History Today.

A graduate of the University of Reading, her career in Human Resources Management, Training and Consultancy, spans the UK and Africa. Pede’s short stories have appeared in Ìrìnkèrindò: A Journal of African Migration, on the Sierra Leone Writers Series website, and in Matatu 41-12 respectively. His short story Foreign Aid was shortlisted for the 2013 Caine Prize for African Writing.

FISTON MWANZA MUJILA was born in 1981 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, where he went to a catholic school before studying Literature and Human Sciences at Lubumbashi University. He now lives in Graz, Austria and is pursuing a PHD in Romance Languages. His writing has been awarded with numerous prizes, including the Gold Medal at the 6th Jeux de la Francophonie in Beirut as well as the Best Text for Theater (“Preis für das beste Stück”, State Theater, Mainz) in 2010.

Tram 83, originally published in French in August 2014 by Éditions Métailié, is his first novel, and has been shortlisted for and won numerous literary prizes in France and Austria, and has been translated into eight languages.
