en years after the induction of the first of BC’s foremost business leaders into the Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame, Junior Achievement of British Columbia looks back at the vision that brought the Hall of Fame to life.

Strategically located along the Pacific Rim with competitive operating costs, and an exceptional multicultural work force that is well educated and highly skilled, it’s no surprise that British Columbia has grown to become one of North America’s most competitive and dynamic business environments. Up until ten years ago, there was not a place to recognize and celebrate BC’s attractive business environment, rich lifestyle and the leaders who built the province we know and admire today. Recognizing the need to honour those who built the province they call home in order to inspire future generations of leaders, Jan Bell-Irving, President and CEO of Junior Achievement of BC went in search of support.

Every May, business leaders nominated by their peers are inducted into the Hall of Fame in front of hundreds of BC’s most influential and highly regarded citizens. The Gala Dinner & Induction Ceremonies has become BC’s premiere business event and represents the pride of a vibrant business community whose extraordinary leaders have built a province that will benefit future generations.

The 47 members currently in the Hall of Fame have demonstrated a Vision unique among their peers, provided Leadership to move others to achieve their goals, led their lives with Integrity; and built a Legacy that will enrich those who follow. eter Bentley has been an industrial leader in British Columbia and a Canadian spokesperson for our world renowned forest industry. He always understood the importance of community in the forest industry. The safety of his employees was always his number one priority.

Mr. Bentley led Canfor as CEO from 1975-1995 and continues to serve as a director. Canfor is not only one of BC’s largest home-grown enterprises, but it is also one of its most formative as the forest industry built many of the communities and much of the infrastructure across this vast province. His long tenure at the helm of one of the most significant contributors to the BC economy has made an indelible impact on the prosperity of the province and has touched the lives of tens of thousands of people who build their lives around a career at Canfor.

Mr. Bentley served as Chancellor at the University of Northern British Columbia from 2004 to 2007. He received honourary Doctor of Law degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of Northern British Columbia.

Simon Fraser University recognized Mr. Bentley with a Distinguished Community Leadership Award in 2007. He served on a number of major company boards including Shell, Bank of Montreal and the International Advisory Board of JP Morgan Chase. He is the Founder and Chairman of SierraSil Health, a proprietary mineral that aligns with his safety focus.

Mr. Bentley’s involvement in community organizations reflects his personal commitment to building a better society. He is a member of the BC Sports Hall of Fame, having won the WAC Bennett Award, and a past Chair. He founded the VGH Hospital Foundation in 1980 which later merged to become the VGH/UBC Hospital Foundation – this year they passed the half billion mark in contributions. He is a past Chair of the BC Business Council and served for 14 years on the Canadian

His long tenure at the helm of one of the most significant contributors to the BC economy has made an indelible impact on the prosperity of the province and has touched the lives of tens of thousands of people who build their lives around a career at Canfor.

Those who have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Bentley will attest that his influence is both powerful and personal. He was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1983 and received the Order of British Columbia in 2014.

r. Brandt Louie is one of Canada’s most respected entrepreneurs and philanthropists. Under his stewardship, London Drugs has become one of Canada’s most trusted retail brands, and a leading contributor to environmental and social causes.

Dr. Louie practiced as a chartered accountant until joining the family business in 1972. Since then, he has applied his acute financial mind and entrepreneurial energy to growing H.Y. Louie Group on a foundation of respect, hard work and community service. He was named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of London Drugs in 1998 and again in 2014.

A visionary business leader, Dr. Louie advises North America’s most prominent corporations and public institutions. He serves in organizations such as the Vancouver Board of Trade/World Trade Centre, and the BC Business Council, the Hostorica Foundation of Canada, the Food Marketing Institute, and the Gairdner Foundation, the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, Chair of the Board of Directors — Grosvenor Americas, member of the Board of Visitors — Duke University Medical Center and the Dean’s Council, John F. Kennedy School of Government. As of 2013, he is a member of the Canadian Judicial Council, Chairman’s Advisory Group, and is an advisor for the Winkler Institute for Dispute Resolution.

Dr. Louie has been honoured with several awards, including: Entrepreneur of the Year, the Golden Jubilee Medal of Queen Elizabeth II, the Simon Fraser University Business Impact Award, the C.H.I.L.D (Children with Intestinal and Liver Disorders) Foundation’s Great Canadian Achievement Award, the Golden Pencil Award, and the Cornucopia Lifetime Achievement Award CCGD. Business visionary and community leader TODAY, A&W HAS GROWN TO OVER 834 RESTAURANTS ACROSS CANADA.

J

efferson Mooney is Chairman and controlling shareholder of A&W Food Services of Canada Inc. He led the company as President and CEO for fourteen years from 1991 to 2005.

Mr. Mooney is an alumnus of both the University of Saskatchewan and Harvard University Graduate School of Business.

He was chosen one of the Top 100 Graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences in the first 100 years of the University of Saskatchewan.

In November 1992, Mr. Mooney became the first recipient of the Henry Singer Award for Exceptional Leadership, granted by the Faculty of Business of the University of Alberta. In 1994, the Sales and Marketing Executives of Vancouver selected him as Marketing Executive of the Year. In

Mr. Mooney served for six years on the Board of Directors of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

2003, Mr. Mooney was a recipient of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee Medal.

In May 2006, he was inducted into the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame.

As well as being the past Chairman of the Business Council of British Columbia, he is also past Chairman of the Young Presidents’ Organization, BC Chapter, and a member of the Chief Executives’ Organization and World Presidents’ Organization. He served for six years on the Board of Directors of the Vancouver Organizing

Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

In 2007, Mr. Mooney and a partner acquired the Vancouver Canadians Professional Baseball Team that plays at historic Nat Bailey Stadium. The team was honoured in 2013 as the first Canadian team to receive the John H. Johnson Award as the finest franchise in all of Minor League Baseball. As well, the Canadians were Vancouver’s first professional team to win three consecutive Championships, in over 100 years.

Today, A&W is a strategy driven organization that has grown to over 834 restaurants across Canada. Mr. Mooney led the Company through eight strategic transitions including a management buy out of the business in 1995 and the creation of an innovative Revenue Royalty Income Trust in 2002. A&W has been recognized as one of the 50 Best Managed Companies in Canada for the past ten consecutive years

Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame 10th Anniversary Pioneer Laureate Inductees 2015 MARKS THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BUSINESS LAUREATES OF BRITISH COLUMBIA HALL OF FAME. TO COMMEMORATE THIS MILESTONE, AN ADDITIONAL TEN PIONEER LAUREATES ARE BEING INDUCTED AND HONOURED. Nathaniel (Nat) Ryal Bailey (1902-1978) Founder and President White Spot Limited

Nathaniel Bailey was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. His family moved to Vancouver in 1911 where they encountered hard times and it fell to Mr. Bailey to help out. At the age of 12, he began selling newspapers on the streets of downtown and at age 18 switched to selling popcorn and peanuts on the city streets. He eventually moved to selling hot dogs, peanuts and coffee at Athletic Park.

His next move in his expansion plan was to outfit his 1918 Model T truck into a travelling lunch-counter and serve the sightseers at Vancouver’s Lookout Point.

In June 1928, Mr. Bailey opened the first White Spot drive-in on Granville Street at 67th Avenue while operating various concessions such as the teahouse at Whytecliff in West Vancouver and Newton Farms in Surrey. Newton Farms was established to cultivate the high quality and large quantity of chicken and fresh produce that White Spot needed.

By 1953, White Spot’s 25th anniversary, the family business had 350 staff members who served 110,000 guests each week.

Mr. Bailey was a founder and six-time president of the Canadian Restaurant Association. In 1968, he and his partners completed the sale of his company to General Foods for $6.5 million. He then started a second career investing in hotels and condominiums.

David Oppenheimer (1834-1897) Founder (and former Mayor) The Oppenheimer Group David Oppenheimer left his native Frankfurt for New Orleans in 1848 with his brothers. In 1853, they moved to California which was just beginning to burn with Gold Rush fever, but by 1857 the fever was beginning to cool, so they moved to Victoria, BC. They entered the grocery business and eventually moved to the tiny village of Granville (called Gastown today) where their company became firmly established.

Elected mayor of Vancouver by acclamation in 1888, David Oppenheimer is often called the “Father of Vancouver” for his contributions to the city. During his four terms as Mayor, he oversaw the development of the city water works, sewage system and fire department. He was involved in the start of street paving and was instrumental in bringing the city’s first transportation system which included the introduction of streetcars in 1890. The first Cambie and Granville Street Bridges were also opened while he was in office. Mr. Oppenheimer served as Mayor without pay and donated his own land for schools and parks. He established the lighting company, now called BC Hydro, and encouraged council to offer special inducements to new industries. This led to, among other things, the construction in 1888 of the city’s first engineering plant, Vancouver City Ironworks and concessions for BC Sugar Refining Co. to build a refinery that still sits on the city’s waterfront.

The Oppenheimer food-brokerage business, The Oppenheimer Group, still exists today, nearly 150 years after it was established in BC, and 120 years after it arrived in Vancouver.

Henry Ogle Bell-Irving (1856-1931) Founder Anglo-British Columbia Packing Co. Ltd. Henr y Bell-I r ving was born in Scotland and trained as a civil engineer in Edinburgh and Karlsruhe, Germany before returning to England to practice his profession. He and his wife Bella moved to Canada in 1882 where he joined the Canadian Pacific Railway as a surveying engineer. Three years later he headed west to Vancouver.

In 1890, Mr. Bell-Irving raised enough capital to consolidate nine west coast canneries, seven of them on the Fraser River, into one corporation, the AngloBritish Columbia Packing Company Ltd. Through solid management, the canning enterprise prospered.

In 1891, the company accounted for more than one quarter of British Columbia’s total salmon pack, and was the foremost packer of sockeye salmon in the world. In 1889, he chartered a ship to bring over the first direct cargo to Vancouver from Cape Horn. The return voyage was even more significant: he arranged a complete cargo of Fraser River canned sockeye salmon, the first shipment of its kind from BC to the U.K. Mr. Bell-Irving played an active role in maintaining the welfare of the fish canning industry joining others in urging the federal government to establish a treaty with the United States on fishing regulations of the Fraser River salmon.

His perseverance resulted in the establishment of the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commissions three decades later.

Jennie Butchart (1866-1950) Creator Butchart Gardens

Jeannette Foster Kennedy or “Jennie” was born in Toronto, Ontario and attended one of the most prestigious schools in Canada at the time, The Brantford Young Ladies’ College. She was intelligent and artistically gifted and was offered a scholarship opportunity to study art in Paris at the completion of her studies.

She never took the opportunity and instead put her focus on getting married and starting a family.

Meeting through various social circles, Ms. Kennedy and Robert Butchart were married in Buffalo, New York. Following their wedding, they travelled to England to embark on their honeymoon where Mr. Butchart obtained the cement recipe that would make him one of the first in Canada to produce Portland cement.

They headed west and opened a plant in Victoria, taking advantage of the rich limestone deposits necessary for cement production.

When Mr. Butchart’s cement company exhausted the limestone in the quarry which was part of their estate, it left a three and a half acre hole on the property. In efforts to making the area more appealing to the eye, Mrs. Butchart’s creativity was sparked, transforming the hole into a beautiful garden appropriately named the Sunken Garden.

The garden proved to be successful.

The Butcharts suitably named their home Benvenuto which is Italian for welcome and reflects the Butcharts’spirit when it came to allowing people in their home to visit the gardens. Today, the Gardens are a national historic site and approximately one million people visit from all over the world each year.

John Prentice (1907-1987) Chairman Canfor Corporation

John Prentice was born and raised in Vienna, Austria and obtained his degree in Law. He moved to Canada in 1938 and went into engineering, specializing in cotton spinning which was the family’s main business in Central Europe.

Just before the Second World War, Mr. Prentice and his brother-in-law, L.L.G. “Poldi” Bentley, relocated their families to British Columbia. When they arrived in Vancouver, they were introduced to two Hungarian immigrants in the furniture veneer business. With financing from B.T. Rogers (BC Sugar/Rogers Sugar) they formed a company called Pacific Veneer.

With the outbreak of war in 1939, the company was contracted by the British Air Ministry to produce aircraft plywood and became the largest supplier for the Royal Air Force. Through various acquisitions of small sawmills and pulp mills including the purchase of the logging company known as Canadian Forest Products, Canfor became an integrated company producing plywood, lumber, shakes and shingles. Canfor today concentrates on lumber, pulp, paper, pellets and energy.

It was Mr. Prentice’s initiative to utilize waste materials to make value-added products; it was also his vision and leadership to form a National Wholesale Distribution business for paneling and other allied products. Outside of Canfor, Mr. Prentice’s leadership skills were so widely recognized that the Canadian Government appointed him to serve as Chairman of the Canada Council for two terms.

Earl B. Finning (1896-1965) Founder Finning Tractor & Equipment Company Ltd.

Earl Finning started his career as a salesperson for the Caterpillar Tractor Co. distributor in California. Being somewhat of an adventurer, he believed that there were greater opportunities in the relatively underdeveloped province of British Columbia on Canada’s Pacific Coast. He moved to Vancouver and established a small business, selling and servicing various types of heavy equipment.

Mr. Finning established Finning International in 1933 with a $50,000 bank loan and a staff of six. He opened the first Finning branch in Nelson, BC in 1937, and the company owned the sole distribution rights for Caterpillar Tractor Products and Services in BC. Opening it in the midst of the Great Depression was bold and much appreciated by his customers and employees alike. This would be the first of many branches that would be built across the province.

From day one, Mr. Finning’s operating philosophy could be captured in five simple words: “We service what we sell.”

The Finning name spread throughout British Columbia and became synonymous with reliability and service.

Today, Finning International Inc. employs 15,000 people, representing Caterpillar in six countries on over three continents. It is the largest dealer in the Caterpillar world and continues to grow on the base of Mr. Finning’s pledge to provide exceptional customer service for Caterpillar equipment.

Benjamin Tingley Rogers (1865-1918) Founder BC Sugar/ Rogers Sugar

Benjamin Tingley Rogers was born in Philadelphia and decided to follow in his father’s footsteps to pursue a career in the sugar industry. In 1889, he learned that Vancouver was the terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway and immediately identified an opportunity for himself in an untapped market for processed sugar. Recognizing the high cost of transporting refined sugar by rail from Montreal to Vancouver, Mr. Rogers seized the opportunity to refine sugar on the West Coast, taking advantage of Vancouver’s strategic location to receive raw sugar shipments from the Pacific and ship the final product to various West Coast centres.

BC Sugar Refinery was Vancouver’s first major industry not based on logging or fishing and is still here after more than 100 years. Mr. Rogers’ legacy lives on through Rogers Sugar, which remains the leading refiner, processor, distributor and marketer of sugar products in Western Canada.

Dick (Percy Ritchie) Sandwell (1912-1996) Founder and First President Sandwell Engineering Dick (Percy Ritchie) Sandwell was born in London, England and went on to graduate with honours in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, where he was awarded the Brock Scholarship and Convocation Prize. He started his engineering career in Montreal and in 1940 joined his father in Australia, assuming responsibility for the completion of the Tasmanian newsprint mill in 1941.

He eventually made his way back to British Columbia to join the Powell River Company as its Chief Engineer where he organized and carried out the company’s post-war development program. At the end of 1948, with the partnership of Henry Ward Beecher of Seattle, he established the consulting engineering firm Beecher and Sandwell which was succeeded in 1950 by Sandwell and Company in Vancouver.

The growth of the company and its worldwide activities brought general recognition of its international stature and reputation and resulted in the establishment of permanent offices in Vancouver, Montreal, Portland, London, Stockholm and Zurich.

Mr. Sandwell’s extensive international experience in engineering and the applied sciences resulted in his appointment to the following scientific bodies: the National Research Council of Canada, the Science Council of Canada, the British Columbia Research Council and the British Columbia Medical Research Council. He was also a recipient of a honourary Doctorate of Laws degree from Simon Fraser University.

Hok Yat Louie (1875-1934) Founder and President H.Y. Louie Company Limited

Hok Yat Louie came from a poor Chinese peasant family in Du Tou village in Canton Province, now called Zhongshan. At age 21, he set out for Canada, borrowing $50 to pay the head tax instituted by the Canadian government. After toiling at a series of manual labour jobs, he began to farm on a plot he leased on what is now Marine Drive in Burnaby. His persistence paid off and he eventually was able to open his first store in 1903, the Kwong Chong Company, selling seed, fertilizer and wholesale groceries in Vancouver’s Chinatown. In 1927, Mr. Louie renamed and incorporated the company to H.Y. Louie Company Limited.

Building community in his adopted country was so important to Mr. Louie that he paid the Head Tax for many immigrants to enable them to stay and prosper in Canada. He became a leader in this burgeoning Chinese community, acting as a mentor and trusted advisor.

After his death, his four sons managed the family business guided by the principles and values of their father. Eventually, Tong Louie took over and in 1955 they acquired the IGA franchise for BC and in 1976 purchased London Drugs. The company now owns some of the most recognized companies in the province.

The entire group of companies is still driven by the same values its founder lived and expressed so eloquently.

Mr. Louie overcame extraordinary circumstances and an impoverished beginning to launch some of Canada’s most successful and enduring businesses, and he accomplished all this during a time of institutional racism when the Chinese Exclusion Act stopped Chinese from coming to Canada from 1923 to 1947.

Howard Allan Simons (1897-1981) Founder and President H.A. Simons Ltd.

Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, Howard Allan Simons, P.Eng, graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He began his career working for the industrial engineering company his father had established in Chicago in 1914, V.D. Simons Inc. In 1939, Prentice Bloedel awarded Mr. Simons the contract to study, design and then supervise the construction of Bloedel, Stewart & Welch’s unbleached Kraft pulp mill in Port Alberni, BC. Design and construction of this mill was interrupted by war and Mr. Simons moved with his family to Powell River, BC, to serve as a consulting engineer for improvements and additions to Powell River Company’s high grade sulphite mill.

He moved to Seattle in 1942 to focus on studies for the Port Alberni mill and then to Vancouver in 1944 for the design work of the mill, establishing H.A. Simons Ltd. The Port Alberni project was completed in 1947 on time and on budget and would be the first pulp mill built in BC since 1918 and the first post-war Kraft pulp mill in Canada. The Port Alberni mill won worldwide recognition.

H.A. Simons Ltd. became Simons International Corporation under the leadership of Thomas A. Simons and was eventually sold to AGRA in 1999. AGRA subsequently merged with AMEC two years later. Much of Simons International Corporation’s offices and operations continue to exist as part of AMEC today.

Celebrating 10 Years of the Hall of Fame The Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame honouring the Laureates is located at the Vancouver Convention Centre East and was completed in 2009 thanks to the generosity of donors. The Hall of Fame has two important goals: to honour those who helped build our province, and to inspire those who follow to be builders themselves. This year, in recognition of its tenth anniversary, a new site is being built at the Vancouver Convention Centre West, and will be unveiled in late 2015 as the Place of Honour.

In addition to a new site to mark the anniversary, the Hall of Fame Cabinet has inducted an additional ten Pioneer Laureates.

These Laureates are pioneers of our province as they have made significant contributions to society, and evidence of their work can be seen in our everyday lives.

Through this landmark, people from all parts of the province are able to share a feeling of pride for these remarkable BC business leaders.

Volunteers: the Heart of our Business OUR VOLUNTEERS TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN BEING ABLE TO SHARE THEIR REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES WITH BC’S YOUTH.

L

ast month, Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) along with many organizations across Canada celebrated their volunteers as part of National Volunteer Week. With over 800 volunteers delivering our free business education programs to BC youth each year, it goes without saying that volunteers are truly at the heart of JABC’s business.

JABC volunteers keep coming back for more. Why do they do this? They believe that Junior Achievement’s mentorship to the young is a unique, valuable opportunity that many didn’t have growing up.

Our volunteers come from various backgrounds in business and finance but they all have one thing in common. They tell us they take great pride in being able to share their real-life experiences with BC’s youth. They believe in JA’s mission and values and are committed to providing the necessary skills and foundation for the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Take Haji Charania from Saanich, BC. He was recently recognized by JABC for having completed 10 years of volunteer service with us and delivered 100 programs during that time.

“For me it is always a pleasure to be in the classroom and share my knowledge and experience with the students,” says Mr. Charania. “I believe in the goals of JA, and enjoy people and other volunteers. I am always grateful to all teachers for their gracious invitation, often several times from the same teachers, and for their support in the classroom. I find students very respectful, polite and participative. I am

It’s clear that these volunteers bring tremendous value to the students they mentor while getting so much back in knowing that they have helped uncover ideas and opportunities for youth that they did not

realize.

Our host teachers agree that role models from the business community play a vital role in their students’ experience.

One teacher indicated that “the thoughtful and engaged manner that a volunteer brings into the classroom models well to students. Having a classroom teacher being matched by the professionalism of the JABC volunteer is a powerful experience for all.”

JABC is grateful to all of our dedicated volunteers who come back year after year to share their valuable time and expertise with BC’s youth. They are truly the heart of our business and are the ones who enable us to impact over 32,000 youth around our province annually.

Over the years, JABC has leveraged its partnerships so that it now reaches more students in more locations across BC. Today, JA programs are available to grade 5-12 classrooms in 55 of BC’s 60 school districts, with aspirations to serve all districts in the near future. JABC currently has a presence in Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, Kelowna, Kamloops, and Northern BC so that almost any community that wants a JA program can participate.

60 Years of JA Partnerships

B

uilding something significant and lasting requires vision, collaboration and partnership. In 1955, Vancouver resident Ralph Baker, former President of the Standard Oil Company, recognized the potential to inspire and equip BC students with the skills and entrepreneurial drive to grow the BC economy. With that foresight in mind, he incorporated Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) in Vancouver—the first Junior Achievement operation in Canada. Once established, Baker quickly set out to invite the Vancouver business community to support and invest in the concept of teaching BC youth about entrepreneurship and business. His vision was so well received that, from those early partnerships, JABC’s support has grown to prepare more than half a million BC youth for success today.

Investing in Potential JABC’s partnerships with corporations, foundations, government and individual donors are as important today as they were in 1955. Junior Achievement’s mandate to inspire and prepare young people to succeed resonates with business and provides an opportunity for companies, entrepreneurs and community organizations to enrich the communities where they live and work by underwriting program costs and providing adult mentorship to youth. Thanks to these relationships, JABC provides its proven entrepreneurship, workforce readiness and financial literacy programs

Bright Future Looking ahead, JABC is working with partners to develop and launch new programs that ensure students are prepared for the BC’s 21st century economy and high-paying, in-demand jobs. Technology is being leveraged to pilot and launch a new online training school for busy and traveling volunteers. Web-based delivery platforms are being developed to remove barriers of distance and time so that any BC student interested in starting a business, preparing for their first job, or learning to manage their own finances can access a JA program anywhere and anytime. Thanks to JABC’s partners and their investments, BC students and teachers can confidently look forward to more decades of achievement on the horizon.

An Unforgettable Lesson in Business THE KEY TO THEIR SUCCESS IS PERSISTENCE, STRATEGY, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, COLLABORATION.

W

hen Kyle Johnson, Ryan Quinney and Antonio Zanchetta, high school students at PASS-Woodwinds Alternate School in Parksville, BC heard they beat out 52 other teams from around BC in the semi-annual Junior Achievement (JA) Titan Online Business Challenge, they simply couldn’t believe it. Using the screen name “‘The Under-Achievers,” these three young men undoubtedly over achieved as they acted as CEOs of a virtual company to compete for market share and financial success. The 3-week online challenge forced them to use business concepts and strategies learned in JA’s Titan program including production, staffing and investment decisions, marketing and pricing challenges, corporate responsibility and charitable giving, decisionmaking and leadership.

So what was the key to their success? Persistence, strategy

and, most importantly collaboration. This was the second time they tried their hand at the JA Titan Online Business Challenge.

Rather than going in blind, they looked at what they did last year and spent time analyzing, strategizing and talking about their new approach. Their teacher, Toby Nowak, commented, “Their collaboration was really good and at times somewhat heated. And we needed that to get to the point.”

believe they can do anything they set their minds to. All are interested in pursuing careers in business and JABC has given them the tools and inspiration to do so.

“This is an extraordinary achievement for these young men, and Antonio, Kyle and Ryan have proudly represented their school in this annual competition. JABC hopes that this opportunity has inspired and empowered these young men to take what they have learned in the challenge and pursue their dreams of a career in business,”

said JABC Board Member, Rob Duncan.

JA’s business education programs impact thousands of students around the province each year by teaching youth essential 21st century skills that go beyond the regular school curricula.

These soft skills, which include communication, collaboration, and critical thinking and more, are essential to future career success.

The combination of the school curriculum and JA programs on work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship taught by

volunteers in the business community provides a solid foundation for youth to learn important skills as they begin to think about their career plans.

For Kyle, Ryan and Antonio, this lesson in business and subsequent win is a huge accomplishment. But, it is just the beginning, and JABC looks forward to following them and our other Achievers as they embark on their careers.
