Message from the Chair and President

We are proud of our accomplishments in the past year. Our impact is far-reaching and powerful. Our programs give students courage, leadership and the skills they need to succeed in a global economy. This year we have seen the benefits of our past investments. We strengthened JABC’s capacity and positioned ourselves to be more innovative in every aspect of our business. We are better equipped to solve problems, build partnerships and overcome barriers. This has enabled us to better teach and inspire our students. In turn, we were delighted to see them demonstrate innovation in their projects – their creativity is astounding. On the program delivery front we introduced a number of changes. We relaunched our financial literacy program, Dollars with Sense; introduced an improved version of our high school Company Program; piloted the national Success Skills program; and worked collaboratively with the Southern Alberta charter to rewrite and pilot an enhanced online version of our Investment Strategies Program. JABC strives to reach a diverse student audience. We are proud of our progress, particularly in Aboriginal communities. We also reached homeschool students, rural students, youth at a rehabilitation facility and students in alternative programs. We continue to provide a range of scholarships and awards to include these students. Service to our stakeholders is paramount. Our goal is to provide a customer-friendly and seamless path of communication. Our online registration project is almost complete. This will provide teachers and volunteers a more convenient way to communicate with us, as well as alleviate our administrative workload. Our Board of Directors signed off on a new strategic plan to guide our organization into our next phase of growth. This bold and ambitious vision redefines our standards for excellence. We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.

As we do every year, we close with a heartfelt thank you to our teachers, volunteers, donors, Alumni, staff and Board. Thanks to you, JA in Canada creates an annual return to society of $45 for every dollar spent.

Tim Manning

Chair, Board of Directors

JA’s Impact

The Statistics According to the Boston Consulting Group’s 2011 pro bono study:

• By helping youth stay in school, encouraging entrepreneurship and teaching financial literacy skills, JA creates an annual return to society of $45 for every dollar spent.

• Over 65% of Achievers indicate that participation in JA programs had a significant impact on staying in high school and enrolling in post secondary education.

• Over 75% of Achievers cite Junior Achievement as having a significant impact in developing their financial literacy and decision making skills.

• Over 75% of Achievers say JA was a critical driver of their work success. The Stories Thank you letter, written to JA volunteer and Alumnus Mandy Chow

Dear Mandy, When Ms. Neville told our class that we were going to do a business course, I thought that it was going to be one of those textbook courses where there is a lot of reading and learning but no doing. Turns out I was completely wrong. So much of the course was about discussing and applying our skills: communication, leadership, problem solving and teamwork. You explained that, for a business to succeed, you have to work together, not against each other. Thank you for volunteering to teach us. I liked how you made it OUR business class, not YOUR business class. I learned business skills but also many other skills that can be transferred to real life. You are an amazing role model! Student Reach

“I’ve been a JA participant for two years and have met many other Achievers from BC and around the world. JA has definitely made me more confident. As president of my JA company I had to talk to lots of people and initiate conversations. Even if I felt shy or unprepared I could speak to a large audience and deliver the right message, on the spot! I dream of going to university and launching a startup company in the renewable energy industry. I want to do something big…. while giving back.” – Sammi Wu JA Titan and Company Program student from Burnaby North Secondary and winner of the JA Scholarship for Entrepreneurial Studies

Junior Achievers Get Leadership Advice from General Hillier Thirty-five young Achievers met General R.J. Hillier, former Chief of the Defence Staff for the Canadian Forces. This unique forum was held prior to the Business Laureates Hall of Fame Gala. General Hillier had a candid conversation about leadership; students asked him insightful questions and, in return, received good advice. The hour-long forum was facilitated by Cheryl Nakamoto, JA Alumnus and Co-Founder of McNeill Nakamoto Recruitment Group. “General Hillier discussed team building – he shared stories from the army but the message applied to running a business. He also talked about being a leader when facing a negative or tragic situation and dealing with it.” – JA Alumnus “He was a really powerful speaker. I asked him how he is able to present himself in a confident manner. He replied ‘keep practicing’ and confided that he, too, thought public speaking was really hard when he was young.” – JA student

Program Highlights

Student company ‘Paws it’ at Columneetza Secondary in Williams Lake never met their advisors from Thompson Rivers University (TRU)… at least, not in person. They used Skype to communicate with TRU’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) club in Kamloops, 300 kilometres away. The SIFE members enthusiastically coached the students and built a great relationship over the Internet. ‘Paws it’ sold silicone wristbands in support of the Williams Lake SPCA.

Thanks to the latest camera-related technology, photo booths are making a comeback. A grade 7 class at Waverley Elementary in Vancouver created a photo booth for their Business of Our Own. The sales team showed clients an iPad loaded with a wide selection of background scenes. The clients posed with props and – voila! – saw themselves in a fun fantasy photo. This project also generated zero waste: all photos were emailed to clients.

Port Alberni School District and JABC hosted an Economics for Success event for three hundred grade 9 students. Twenty volunteers from the Chamber of Commerce taught the program and RCMP Corporal Dave Cusson was the keynote speaker. Their message: make smart educational and financial choices to achieve future goals, as well as avoid drugs and alcohol. The students were impressed and grateful that so many of the community’s role models had come together to help them. WORKREADINESSENTREPRENEURSHIPFINANCIALLITERACY

Program Highlights

How do we reach students who do not attend a regular school? JABC in Victoria partnered with Coast Capital Savings Credit Union to host Dollars with Sense for homeschool students. The workshop was held at Coast Capital’s corporate boardroom; the 12 spots quickly filled up. At the end of the program the kids were overheard saying they were going home to research GIC rates for their savings funds! JABC also delivered programs to homeschool students in Penticton, Kelowna and Kamloops through a new partnership with BC Online Schools. New and improved! JABC partnered with JA Southern Alberta to revamp the popular Investment Strategies Program into a fully online version. It features a newly designed website, YouTube videos and customizable PowerPoint slides for volunteers. The updated ISP reflects today’s investment issues and a broader range of investment options. “Great improvements on the package, [especially] with PowerPoint.” – JA teacher “The videos are excellent, particularly the one in Lesson Three.” – JA volunteer Over its 40-year history more than 3,000 top Achievers have attended the Next Generation Leaders (NGL) Forum, an international business conference for youth hosted by JA Canada. In June, 2012 JABC chose promising young leaders to attend the 2013 forum, thanks to new support from The Keg Spirit Foundation (for five students) and Colliers International (for a Vancouver Island student). JABC Alumni Network

Natalie looked for opportunities to build and better utilize JABC’s Alumni Network. She focused on the Ambassador Club; these young Ambassadors were recruited as volunteer spokespeople or greeters at JABC events. An enthusiastic and impressive group, the members were keen to volunteer but needed more clarity on their roles. Natalie also recognized that the current communications strategy could be improved, so she wrote a proposal to form an Ambassador Club Executive to ensure that volunteer requests were distributed and answered quickly, as well as grow the Club. Her proposal was submitted to JABC last spring and will be implemented in 2012 -13. “I believe the Alumni network is a hidden gem of untapped resources. They ‘know’ JA and it’s close to their hearts. By creating opportunities for them to re-engage with and promote JA, they would ignite a groundswell of support for a great organization.” – Natalie Lau JA Alumnus and BBA Candidate, Beedie School of Business, Simon Fraser University “I joined a Sears-sponsored JA company as a grade 10 student in Burnaby over 40 years ago. As the Personnel Manager for ‘Burken Plastics’, I contributed to the success of our company and learned the key components to operating a business. In time, I took some of that learning into my role as a principal, working with the team at our school and supervising a staff of up to 70 full- and part-time employees. Fast forward to 2009: JABC approached our school to offer financial programs. I was delighted to have the opportunity for my students to meet and learn from local businesspeople. We introduced A Business of Our Own in the first year, then added Economics for Success. This year we provided programs for all 600 students with the addition of Dollars with Sense! I’ve come full circle in my own career. I retired as a school principal in August and have launched a consulting business.” – Sandra Sellick JA Alumnus and Retired Principal, Rutland Middle School, Kelowna WORKREADINESSENTREPRENEURSHIPFINANCIALLITERACY

JA Volunteers: Celebrating their Achievements

JABC pays tribute to more than 800 volunteers who taught, mentored and inspired more than 29,000 students this year. Our volunteers bring their own innovative ideas and experience to create memorable lessons for the participants. We are amazed by their passion and ingenuity which help make our programs a tremendous success. Thank you!

JABC congratulates a Board Member on his recent award: Steve Wilson British Columbia Community Achievement Award 2012 Steve was one of 36 British Columbians recognized in a ceremony at Government House in Victoria. As a Board Member, Past Chair and a constant ambassador for JABC he has significantly enhanced JABC’s governance and financial practices, our reach and our programs.

JA Students are Work-Ready! Thanks to a bursary provided by Colliers International in Victoria, Nazif Khedri attended JA’s Next Generation Leaders Forum in August, 2011. He returned from the forum even more inspired and motivated to become a business leader. He volunteered as a JABC spokesperson in Victoria, telling his story to companies, community groups and schools. His presentation astounded the Collier’s executives; they were tremendously pleased that their contribution had such a profound effect. This past summer Nazif landed a paid internship at – where else? – Colliers International.

Helping young people learn and practice key principles related to managing, saving, growing and protecting their money goes a long way in paving the way for future success. Nine young Achievers had the opportunity of a lifetime: to participate in a photo shoot with legendary business icon and Laureate Jim Pattison. The photo shoot was at the Business Laureates of BC Hall of Fame and featured in a six-page supplement, generously provided by The Vancouver Sun. Mr. Pattison chatted with the awestruck students and shared one important piece of advice: “To be REALLY successful, ‘Ya Gotta Wanna’.”
