Over the years, how has your art evolved in terms of style, medium, and themes? Can you share some pivotal moments or influences that have shaped your artistic journey?

I have been creating art for decades. For me, almost the minute I was born, I was creating art. I was born with what you call a natural talent / a gift. I remember as a child, I would quietly sit at my desk and draw away the days. The fact that I grew up in an art household where my mother is an artist and my father is an art collector also reinforced my talents and helped shape my artistic leanings and direction in the arts. I had scholarships and won awards that facilitated my path through college. Coming from academia, I am a graduate and "Notable Alumni" from Corcoran College of Art and Design George Washington University, Washington DC. For the longest time, my art was mainly figurative executed in an expressionistic way. I was trained in anatomy and that reflects in my earlier figurative work. Yet, with time like everything else, I evolved and my artwork developed as well. Since I am an avid nature lover, I felt that the natural world has to make an appearance in my art via my abstracted minimal aesthetics. Hence, I veered towards creating artwork albeit very modern and abstract but still inspired from nature and the environment around me, be it my voyages by the sea, or the feelings I feel through a stroll in the streets of NYC admiring its cityscape’s skyline. I bring what I see to my art and I let it be.

A pivotal moment that changed my artistic journey and made me more focused on my route was when my father had a heart attack. I remember that day, I sat at my bed thinking, "what am I doing in my life, I have this incredible gift and I am not doing anything with it. Why am I not doing what I love? Life is too short. I better start painting and producing artwork and doing what I was born to do." Sometimes life hits you hard but makes you think, and yes one's direction might be altered but in a good way.

A recent moment that has shaped my artistic journey happened this past June 2023 where I was told that my artwork will be featured on a screen in Times Square on Broadway in NYC. Thus, I went to the address and lo and behold in a huge screen my painting titled "Spectrum" was featured right in the heart of Broadway in front of the ticket center on a huge digital billboard next to the ads of major fashion houses like BVLGARI with actresses such as Anne Hatheway and model Gigi Hadid along with Broadway musicals - it was such a surreal moment that until now feels very out of this world.

Your art seems to be deeply personal and expressive. How do you connect your own experiences and emotions to your artwork, and what do you hope viewers take away from your pieces?

I have always said as a long time practicing artist and also as an art educator advising my students and budding artists that the most important element is to be true to yourself and to remain authentic. Quite simply, I have done this art thing because it is an integral part of who I am. I feel in my case, I was born this way, and nothing can change that. Thus, I have embraced this artistic character and I have candidly remained faithful and authentic all the way. In a way, being an artist is almost a personal private thing, I bring that very private soul wrenching part of me through the canvas and out to the public to view and experience as well. I have loved a recent art review about my work which exclaims that my work is more of an experience than anything else, and I can't agree more. My body of work, is who I am in a nutshell, my whole life and experiences brought to you through brushstrokes, subject matters and a visual tapestry I define as visual poetry of my creative soul. In a sense, my subconscious comes alive and makes an appearance onto the canvas. Thus, the art process for me becomes a bridge that connects me to the mysterious subconscious brain and all its depth and riches. Moreover, the totalities and entities of being a long-time practicing artist have led to paths of meditative practices that facilitated the connection to these expressive artworks. Painting along with meditation led me towards further self-discovery, and ultimately self-love. Additionally, I feel I was born on this earth to also be a guiding light, a beacon of some sort to open people's eyes to the light and love within this life that collectively connects us humans with each other. Through my art, I aspire for this light to come through and be a source of inspiration and joy. Ultimately, I desire for my art to be a source of enlightenment to those who view it bringing hope and rejuvenation to the soul.

Could you walk us through your creative process? How do you find inspiration for your artworks, and what steps do you typically follow from conception to completion of a piece? I have a very feverish approach to painting. I start painting one painting after another and I don't stop until I crash. I work the hours away without thought of anything else and with as little interruption since I feel disruption takes away from my artistic process and mood. I am very much a “right side of the brain” type of person - The right side being the creative side. This is why I paint mainly at night while everyone is sleeping, so I wouldn't be interrupted. I need to be completely in my creative zone to create my pieces. Inspiration comes to me rather easily, sometimes I dream of vivid paintings and I wake up saying I need to paint what I saw. Sometimes, it's a simple walk in the woods or a nearby park by the lake that ignites that creative spark. It could be how the light hits the ripples of the water and how the reflection gets caught between the waves. Other times, it is a philosophical thought of a baffling topic such as infinity to capture the idea of infinitesimal rather than an obvious visual matter. Such intellectual cognitive content also ignites my sense of creativity and inspires me to create my work. Thus, many times it is a concept than an actual subject matter that fires up my creative juices. Hence, it is not always only contemporary art the viewer sees but conceptual art and thought as well.

As an artist, what have been some of the biggest challenges you've faced in your career? Conversely, what achievements or moments have been most rewarding for you personally and professionally? A few years ago, a dear family member had a life threatening tumor where my life was turned upside down and became a living hell. It was a very difficult time and thankfully my family member survived it and is doing well. Yet, this traumatic and terrifying experience had embedded within me a deeply rooted fear and stress that when Covid happened it triggered the anxieties. That is why I had to resort to meditative practices of healing to free my mind and find a source of calm to guard me from past angst and difficult memories along with the challenges I face currently when dealing with hurtful situations that I can't control. There have been numerous rewards in this career, seeing my artwork in museums within the US and internationally has brought a smile to my face. Giving lectures also in museums and in major institutions and art critiquing in "Art Basel Miami Beach" was also a great experience where one met like-minded peers and converse in art matters which leads to growth within the art community where everyone comes out stronger and better at the end. And, of course exhibiting in NYC and having my artwork in a digital display on Broadway in Times Square was something else as well. Seeing that my art and philosophies have changed people's lives for the better and uplifted their spirits is also very pleasing in seeing the positive impacts on those who crossed my path.

Looking forward, what new directions or projects are you most excited about exploring in your art? Are there any specific goals or aspirations you have for your future as an artist? I am excited that I see my artwork have the recognition it deserves and make it to world-class museums. I hope for this to bloom and blossom even further and eventually to get the chance of seeing a retrospective of my work in a major museum such as the Whitney Museum and the MoMA in NYC along with Tate Modern in London and others - a girl can always dream. :) The new project that I just started, is still very much an infant. I recently launched my gallery where all artists worldwide from all levels can participate in juried exhibits. It is mainly a cultural concept, but we'll see how it progresses: Here is its link: www.vb-contemporary.com
