KRA PRESIDENT‘S MESSAGE Greetings, Kentucky Reading Association (KRA) members, educators, and friends of literacy.

On behalf of the KRA Executive Board and the Conference Planning Team, I welcome you to this year’s KRA conference. Angela Ballinger, this year’s conference chair, and her planning team have striven to organize a conference that is strong with personnel, content, and activities – all with you, Literacy Superheroes – in mind. This year’s theme Literacy: The Greatest Superpower captures what we all understand: Literacy is the foundation of all our learning and the ability to read provides the strength to persevere and achieve.

Angela has put together an amazing lineup of keynote and featured presenters who will be sharing and inspiring us with their literacy super-talents. Zipping through skies (well, at least the hallways and elevators) and defending against the dark powers of illiteracy, Mike Artell, Brod Bagert, Kylene Beers, Jacqueline Jules, and Robert “Bob” Probst will equip us with the necessary powers to help us aid in that combat. Through research, strategies, motivation, and various presentation styles, they, and all our concurrent breakout session presenters, will allow us to recharge and engage.

A plethora of opportunities exist at the KRA Conference Justice League of Literacy to enhance and share your own superpowers. The always-exciting Author/Illustrator Reception (a myriad of talent), extended workshops, and Author Luncheon (with Jacqueline Jules) will provide opportunities to immerse in knowledge and creativity. Unique KRA Member events will offer power-sharing networking opportunities through the Appreciation Reception (music by the Moon Dogs) and the Local Council Networking Author Breakfast (with Mike Artell). We also will be sharing some very important announcements during general sessions that are sure to induce your onomatopoeia skills!

The Exhibit Hall will be an energizing place again this year. Our very supportive exhibitors will help you hone your literacy superpowers with resources. The fun and bargain-rich Silent Auction inspires creativity and resource collections.

I would be remiss if I did not offer tribute to the great Literacy Superheroes that have paved the way for our KRA organization. On the facing page, you will see the listing of an incredible set of individuals who have blazed the trails through all superhero terrains and spaces to bring us here today – our KRA Past Presidents. Their leadership has been inspirational and power-enriched. I am personally indebted to them for helping provide the opportunity to realize and grow my own literacy superpowers.

You are all Literacy Superheroes, and as we traverse through conference together, know you are very important to every learner as you impart your literacy powers to them.

This is a limited-seating breakfast with Mike Artell and requires a ticket through pre-registration. Currently, not every area in the state has a local council. Each formed council is adopting unrepresented areas with the intent of planting the seeds for future council formation. KRA is an affiliate of the International Literacy Association (ILA). Displays for both are located in the general conference and registration area. This is a good time to investigate or renew membership in both organizations.

KRA now has an efficient, expeditious online registration system for your convenience. A membership registration station will be conveniently located to assist with creating your membership online. Membership to KRA also includes local council membership. Please take time to visit the Council Area located near the Exhibit Hall to find out how you may become more involved in KRA at the local level.

Professional Growth & Effectiveness System (PGES)

In an effort to align the conference with the current PGES framework, you will notice each session will have a PGES domain & element designation included in the session header.

Evaluations & Certificates

We want to know what you think! Your comments help us to make each conference better. Please complete evaluations for each breakout session. Evaluations are available online or paper versions can be found in each session. Online evaluations are located on the sched.org platform. Click on the session you are attending and click the “Session Evaluation� button. Place completed paper evaluations in the baskets at the back of each session room. You will notice each session evaluation includes a tear-off Certificate of Attendance specific to that session, as well as the pertinent PGES domain relevance.

EILA Credit

Conferences do not require, and do not receive, an Effective Instructional Leadership Approval (EILA) number.

KAR 704 KAR 3:325 (Sec. 3(2a)) allows districts to award up to 6 hours of EILA credit to instructional leaders, each school year, for educational conferences.

For the past several years, KRA has sponsored a unique professional learning opportunity for teachers across the state in anticipation of the annual conference. Harriette Arrington Folktales from Africa: Tools for Teaching Willow

Join a storyteller/author for ideas and tips for using African stories for teaching. Participants in this interactive session will be invited to join in the telling as well as actively participate in modeling of the selected strategies. Folktales from Africa provides a wonderful context to enrich classroom literacy experiences.

The recent legislated attention to dyslexia and its remediation offers promise and peril. There is danger in a rush to service provision and the potential for inadequate preparation of intervention providers. Avoiding misdiagnosis will be crucial for positive results and efficient use of limited resources. Some guidelines to consider will be shared. (PGES: 1A, 1B, 3C, 4A)

This presentation, geared toward elementary teachers, will help you motivate your students to want to write across the curriculum! General research will be shared, along with multiple examples of writing strategies that help motivate your students to write. Demonstrations and models will be provided, and you will design lessons that are specific to your grade level and content area.

New literacy program requirements for middle school, high school, grades 5-12, and grades P-12 certification programs in Kentucky (16 KAR 5:060) have led colleges and universities statewide to analyze instructional practices and assessment surrounding literacy and to develop action plans that incorporate candidates demonstrating the International Reading Association Standards for Middle and High School Content Classroom Teachers as part of their program assessment. In one Kentucky university, teacher education faculty from the School of Education, College of Arts and Sciences, and School of Music completed surveys and participated in focus groups designed to determine what teacher educators perceived were their needs in literacy instruction.

Human beings typically come into this world with 5 senses: Sight, Hearing, Touch, Smell and Taste. But we also have a sixth sense: our sense of Humor. By leveraging everyone’s natural inclination towards humor, educators can reach even the most reluctant readers and writers. The trick is to keep what you’re teaching “short and light.” In this session, Mike Artell will share some specific techniques for applying his “short and light” reading/writing techniques across the curriculum and grade levels. Bring something to write/ draw with because you’ll be doing a lot of both. This session is most appropriate for teachers of students in grades 3 – 6 but primary teachers will learn ways to apply these techniques to children as young as 5 years old. Come prepared to laugh (you’ll be doing a lot of that too) as you learn to think, write and draw more creatively. (PGES: 1A, 1D, 3B, 3C)

In this special two-part session, the first hour will focus on finding the right books for ELL learners. Not all children relate to stories about middle class families with a pampered pet. If we want at-risk readers to become book lovers, they need literature that depicts their lives, too.

Jacqueline Jules, award-winning author of the Zapato Power series, the Sofia Martinez series, No English, Duck for Turkey Day, and Never Say a Mean Word Again will share what she has learned as both an author and a school librarian about offering the right books to ELL learners. A bibliography will be provided.

During the second hour, Jacqueline Jules will share secrets of her own writing process and provide classroom tested tips for teaching students to plan their writing, revise, and edit. Mini-lessons for personal narrative, persuasive writing, pre-writing, paraphrasing, and editing will be provided. (PGES: 1A, 1B, 1D, 1E)

Brenda Overturf Solving the Vocabulary Puzzle: Connecting Standards for Deeper Word Knowledge K-5 Willow

We know that vocabulary development is vital for reading comprehension and student success. KY’s Teacher Internship Program (KTIP) can be a powerful support system for novice teachers, but sometimes it is difficult to provide resources to help them make specific adjustments to improve their instruction. If you are a beginning teacher, principal, resource teacher, or a teacher educator this session is for you! Recent KTIP “survivors” and an experienced KTIP Teacher Educator will share literacy instructional strategies that align with KTIP’s Sources of Evidence and the Kentucky Framework for Teaching (PGES). You will learn how to integrate literacy to improve student learning at any grade level or content area and demonstrate the “accomplished” level of PGES, specifically in Domains 1, 2, & 3. Emphasis will be placed on methods that target the most commonly identified growth areas: questioning skills, differentiation, and even classroom management.

In just over a year, more than 4,700 children have enrolled in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program within a designated service area of the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC). Come hear about the exciting journey we are on and the resources that are in place to help our children and families increase literacy skills. Learn how you can play a role in advancing our impact to even a larger number of children in the region as they enter formalized educational settings.

Mike Artell Wastes Time, Annoys Others When Mike Artell was in elementary school, his report cards often had one of the “conduct” boxes checked. That box was labelled, “Wastes time, annoys others.” This came as a surprise to Mike because everyone in class seemed to be thoroughly enjoying his antics. Everyone except the teacher. Many years and more than 40 books later, Mike is still having fun. In this session, Mike will share his approach to writing and illustrating books, his love of wordplay and a special teacher who provided the encouraging words Mike needed to hear.

Seuss and Middle Grades Science: Using Dr. Seuss as a Tool for Literacy and Exploration in Science

The Book Thief Steals the Show

Strand: Language and Literacy Topic: Content Area Literacy Level: Middle PGES: 1A, 1D, 3C From Bartholomew’s Oobleck to the Lorax’s message about the environment, there are lots of lessons for the avid scientist - and new lenses to look at them through. With the use of Dr. Seuss books in the classroom, students won’t have to be shown science, they’ll start looking for it themselves. In this session, we will discuss and design Seuss Science Lessons for middle grades (5-8) students that will enrich their learning and make them think of science in a new way.

Marcus Zusak’s The Book Thief defies categorizing as children’s, YA, or adult literature. Zusak’s innovative narration delights younger readers, introducing them to a new world of reading, while at the same time reminding older readers what they loved about reading years ago. And unlike a similar choice, Harry Potter, The Book Thief’s rendering of a difficult history lesson that needs repeating lest new generations forget, the subject matter is neither a frivolous waste of time, nor a controversial topic to be censored or ignored.

Teaching Inferencing Skills Needed for Close Reading

As the focus on close reading continues, it is clear that students need to be able to not only comprehend details in a text, but infer the relationships between them. This session will focus on strategies for teaching inferencing. Beginning with pictures, we will move to reading, then organizing for writing about what has been read.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles are highly effective in removing barriers to learning for the diverse group of readers that are found in each classroom. In this session, participants will learn how to infuse current literacy practices and strategies with the principles of UDL. Participants will learn simple strategies for implementing UDL principles in the elementary classroom and will receive a packet of materials designed to aid in the development of UDL literacy strategies that will help transform any lesson into a UDL lesson.

Looking at Grammar through Literature

In this presentation, I will address grammar in a different way than the typical workbook approach. I will be using a literary novel about a different culture to teach grammar.

Mrs. Sarah Hood will discuss techniques used in her classroom that engaged students in the current Syrian Crisis issue that expanded beyond just the classroom, even to the White House. This Professional Development will explore ways to truly engage students with current events, tips for how to become a more culturally relevant educator, and information on how to differentiate for gifted learners while teaching literacy skills. Dr. Dorie Combs will extend the presentation past the resources with evidence and research that proves why project based learning, cultural relevance, and well developed writing units in every content area are effective on driving student growth.
