The city, the hub of our personal, social and professional lives, is more than ever the dominant model in the early 21st century. The organisation of the bustling and empty spaces of urbanism is a blueprint for meeting zones where we can find a hubbub of the most contradictory characters in the city: public spaces. We want them to be both calm and busy, sober and joyful, convivial and intimate. Because sometimes we race past like travellers in transit and sometimes we stroll around like merry tourists. But we always want the same thing: To feel happy about being in the city. Whether on foot, at the wheel or on handlebars. The city belongs to us. This is why we all share the feeling that public spaces and their street furniture belong to us. They are part of our living space. Much more than a simple piece of decoration, street furniture is seen as a means for wellbeing in the city, a real service given to its inhabitants. It’s practically our right. It’s a given. We do not expect that street furniture will provide the same service in a landscaped park as on a pedestrian route. But we always want to be able to find a bench without having to look for it. Especially since the development of

soft mobility, which includes sections travelled on foot, with the consequent need for more places to take a short break. Much more than a simple piece of decoration, street furniture is seen as a real service to its inhabitants, a means for well-being in the city. We expect that there will be enough for everyone to find their place, alone or in groups. When deserted, it’s a luxury and when populated, it’s a chance to meet people. How can we imagine these public spaces without furniture that promises calm, comfort and rest? It is a tacit request and we want it to be welcoming and comfortable, with a unique aesthetic. In tune with the times as well as with its environment, which almost exclusively determines its style. So we want it to be different everywhere, like the ebb and flow of our lives. We need a very wide and full range of designs and furnishing solutions to satisfy the naturally varied tastes of the general public and to adapt to each function and each situation. This is why we are developing and going the extra mile. For the design of all our street furniture lines, we have a threefold aim to make public spaces more aesthetically pleasing, to create a peaceful atmosphere and to promote social cohesion.

This is what needs to be done for a public service. You have to think big to make the public do the same.

Stimulating city Whether you want to train, have fun or simply stay fit and healthy, sport is so much more enjoyable when it is free. Cardio, fitness and weight training apparatus have been springing up in green areas all over France and the rest of the world over recent years. A vibrant city will do everything it can to make it easy to access a wide range of physical activities free of charge. The new apparatus are accessible to everyone and adapted to suit a wide range of requirements. Thanks to these innovations, local councils are encouraging people to keep fit to

promote their well being or to get involved in more advanced sporting activities. All these new activities combine to create the image of a dynamic city where every generation can enjoy equal access to equipment which is the most adapted to the requirements and possibilities of every individual: children’s games, multisports ground for teenagers, fitness classes for older people. This new type of apparatus which is accessible to everyone marks the start of a new era in free individual sport in public spaces.

You can get active wherever and whenever it suits you regardless of whether you are young, old, small, tall, slim or stocky. Alone or in a small group. It depends how I feel. Preferably outside... but without having to worry about the weather. The ideal scenario is to play outdoor sport under a shelter with lighting for maximum security, which is doubly appreciated at night. The modern multi-purpose shelter created for both sports specialists and welcome novices is called: MOUV’ROC®.

Putting the world to rights in a public space

Intimate city We love the city for its bright colours and the hectic pace of life created by the huge range of activities on offer. But even though we deliberately seek out pleasure in the city, we can soon become lost in the crowd. It is therefore a vital luxury to be able to enjoy time alone in the heart of the city. It is high time that we pressed the pause button. Here we find empty space, devoid of all noise and all shouting. Here the city’s soundtrack seems to have been cut by an invisible benevolent hand. The volume has been turned down. The tempo has been reduced. We inhale. We exhale.

We are elsewhere. It is as though we have escaped through a gap of greenery between the stone and the concrete. Would we stay for a few minutes or hours sitting on a hospital seat? Difficult to say based on our own feelings. Time is standing still. But this little parallel world that we have been sucked into its moving. Passers-by move along in a colourful but slow and silent procession. The more athletic ones are doing intensive exercises on the apparatus. But all activity here is calm. This is how green areas and public spaces can open up a new dimension.

The city turns into a village. Away from the crowds we regain our identity. We become visible again. The words we share are different from those exchanged in the flow of urban pedestrian traffic. They are more friendly, relaxed words. We are outdoors. Away from the city’s bells and its coded messages. Here the city sits down and finally takes a rest from its own movement. And weaves together social connections from some healthy recreation.

Clean city We can exist in society if we behave in a way that others expect of us. A city in which every inhabitant works together to keep it clean would not be a sterile environment but a little paradise. We would at last emerge from the Middle Ages where we are being held by the waste and rubbish which are carelessly scattered on the asphalt. This does not mean that litter bins have to be flashy. The majority of people like them to be discreet and integrated in the surroundings as they can spot them instinctively. Anyone who is aware of their civic duty will be aware of their presence in any case. In an ideal 21st century, all public spaces would be designed to be shared spaces.

Share by everyone. They would be havens where people could live together. In terms of cleanliness, all city dwellers would fulfil their civic responsibilities thanks to resources provided by the local authorities. This would enhance the comfort of everyone, not least their own. That day will come and will being with it new sensations. We all experience a sense of order, calm and security at the sight of a tidy litter bin which had been overflowing with waste the night before. The whole world seems more healthy. It is looking after us. New tools are currently being developed which enable us to make rapid progress in this direction and which bring ecology into everyday life through digital technology to promote civicmindedness. It is all there. A simple telephone number is all that is needed to report that intervention is required so that the environment can be cleared up more quickly by users and the cleaning services’ duties can be streamlined more easily. The aim of Sineu Graff is to provide cleanliness services in cities and metropolises with the most suitable tools based on NTIC and connected items: “IoT*” intended to facilitate and enhance the effectiveness of waste collection in urban areas, to assist them in the management and maintenance of their containers and provide them with the necessary statistical and historical information and items to improve their performance and enable them to make the best decisions. This is why we have developed “i”, the advanced digital management platform which can be implemented quickly and very easily in hosted mode. This advanced digital management platform for urban cleanliness provides the following applications: • i-localisation : database for the identification, geotracking and management of cleanliness furniture. • i-collect : application intended to record and date information relating to the quantity of waste collected in litter bins using dedicated mobile terminals.

EXPLOITATION OF RESULTS > The platform can also be used as a statistical tool. At the end of each round, the data relating to the round is entered in the database so that it can be analysed and the plan can be refined.

Once the system has been configured by Sineu Graff, the manager operates autonomously on the “i” platform: he/she may create different user accounts, define the area in several zones, configure the alarm and alert thresholds and amend them according to different events organised by the city. 225

i-collecte

i-collect, a coordination tool for the collection of urban waste Suitable for all containers

This tool is used to improve and optimise the management of collection and cleanliness furniture by exploiting the data collected. In principle each item of collecting furniture regardless of its type is identified by an RFID tax which is listed and geo-tagged in the operator’s database. The operator on a collection round collects information in a simple, instant manner on a mobile terminal relating to the volume collected and the time of collection for each item of furniture identified by its RFID tag. At the end of the round, this information is compiled in the “i” digital platform and access is granted to different applications and statistics in order to enhance the exploitation of the service provided and inform users if applicable.

Statistical data relating to filling rates The statistical analysis of emptying dates and filling and location rates can be used to adjust collection rounds and to decide whether furniture with a larger volume is required, the position of a litter bin needs to be changed or the number of collections needs to be increased or reduced in order to provide a better service rate.

Statistical data relating to maintenance Maintenance data, when compared with the characteristics of the litter bin, can be used to identify and quantify the number of interventions on a model and thus calculate its overall operating cost: acquisition, installation and maintenance. Investment in new litter bins can therefore be made on the basis of rational data: overall cost, which may also be associated with an area and a service rate.
