Regenerative design that changes an education building typology from the skies Sunflower 46 is a net-zero K-12 school in Kharkiv, Ukraine dedicated to restoring a community devastated by the war between Ukraine and Russia. By reshaping the building’s footprint, we effectively discourage future strikes made on educational building typologies. Our design principles center around architecture as the third teacher, biophilic healing, and cultural material recovery manifest in flexible classroom planning, integrating accessible points for nature education, and recycling rubble from shelling debris into the walls.

Mass Timber Housing Factory mass timber design studio portland, oregon professor judith sheine team: meghna jain destiny martinez
What if a factory could be built with the same ease of assembly as its products? In collaboration with the Port of Portland and the TallWood Design Institute, this modular mass timber housing factory proposes an industrial development that embraces the circularity of the mass timber economy and sustainable living practices that characterize life in the Pacific Northwest. Our team’s approach was built on the versatility of sheet logic applied to mass ply panels (MPP). By using the largest dimensions for MPP provided by Freres Engineered Wood, we were able to maximize the size of each column and beam while minimizing the offcuts and moment connections across each span.

photovoltaic panels these panels do not affect the building’s daylighting, but instead absorb sunlight in each cell. this islates solar radiation as a semisolar shading strategy while reducing light pollution.
AC electricity load this allows a continuous flow of clean energy to power the factory’s machinery.
grid connected converter return to grid this path returned a portion of generated energy back into the City of Portland.

An incubator for biotech startups “hatched” from a googie style roof the Romania Academic Incubator for Entrepreneurial Genesis and Growth or E.G.G. for short is my proposal for the Center of Entrepreneruship at the University of Oregon. this adaptive reuse of the previous ford car showcase room and coca-cola bottle plant warehouse will generate rapid growth for biology and tech start-ups through access to crucial resources and mentorship. a series of flex spaces explores the granular experience of co-working and the daily points of interaction. each cluster is determined by crowd size, sound level, task type, and proximity to support tasks in order to increase overlap in collaboration.

embrace modernity, respect tradition Tiber Academy explores the balance between cultural reverence and contemporary integration in this educational campus for resident artists and historians on the Casa Della Farnesina ruins. our leading concept of exploring the arch embodies unity across time and people. the arch is a portal that transports us to worlds not yet discovered-embodying the curious spirit of its residents. The arch as a half of a whole manifests in our proposal for the built environment to be the positive counterpart to the dig site. This community invites guests to witness their own artistic transformations, by listening to the wisdom of the past and creating with the tools of the future. Our team decided to commit to craft and complete this project with only hand drawings.
