Certain plants are known to increase humidity and combat indoor air pollutants by absorbing toxins, making your home a little more breathable. Detoxifying your space is a form of self-care. As you tend to your plants each day, you’ll notice a more nurturing and overall healthy environment that will improve your mental clarity. Explore the benefits of adding these four houseplants.

Snake Plant A little goes a long way in terms of watering this plant, especially if you are on the forgetful side.

Snake plants are low maintenance and require little effort.

They also thrive in dimly lit areas and are a reminder of resilience.

Aloe Vera Aloe vera represents healing. Place the aloe plant in the windowsill of a bathroom or kitchen.

Aloe vera plants thrive in bright areas but be careful to avoid overexposure. You can go up to two weeks without watering them.

With proper care, they can grow into a larger plant that requires replanting. This medicinal plant is a great home remedy for treating minor burns and you can even add it to a smoothie.

Peace Lillies Peace lilies symbolize tranquility, purity, positivity, and peace as indicated by its name. Be careful not to overwater peace lilies. They should be watered once a week or when the soil feels dry to the touch. Peace lilies are known to neutralize and improve air quality and they’re great to have around to balance energy during mediation.

Why Black Women Need a Sanctuary

S

afety and comfort are two elements of life we all deserve.

Quite simply, it is what puts our minds at ease and our hearts at rest. It can come from the warm cup of tea we drink or the soft blanket we snuggle under after a long day out in the world.

As Black women, especially, we need and deserve the safety and comfort that comes from having our own sanctuaries. That begs the question: “Are Black women safe?” Do we truly have a place to rest and relax – a place where we can finally take off our capes (if only for a few hours) and just be at peace with ourselves?

Amid remote work environments, virtual learning and online meetings, as Black women, we are still refining and redefining the space we occupy. We still experience the daily and very real stress that comes from commanding and demanding, respect. We still must fight to protect our own, hold our own and build our own — often while standing on our own. No doubt about it, we all need a sanctuary and every true Queen deserves one. Here are six MORE reasons you, Queen, need to find your sanctuary and zealously protect it.

1. Your body needs a place to let go and let your guard down.

2. Your mind needs a respite from the constant filtering and code switching.

3. Your heart yearns for a place to open up and release what’s inside.

4. Your spirit deserves a place to seek refuge.

5. Your soul craves a place to recharge.

6. Your being wants a sanctuary to come home to.

Choose a convenient video app like Google Hangouts, Zoom, or Houseparty. Divide your friends into two teams or play individually if your group has less than five people. You can even raise the stakes with a friendly wager. Grab some snacks and keep the libations flowing with these hilarious games.

MEME THE NIGHT AWAY This game doesn’t require teams.

Before your virtual meetup, email your guests 10 popular internet memes and gifs.

Each person is tasked with writing a hilarious caption to correspond with each image.

Collect all of the responses. On game night, share your screen with the images then read the responses aloud. The group can vote on which ones are the funniest. The person with the most votes wins.

› Changing Your Home Decor One of the simplest ways to make your home look brand new again is by changing your pillowcases. Switch them up by getting new ones that will express the personality of your home.

Try bold color covers to make your living room or bedroom standout. Experiment with illustrations or inspirational quotes that will make you and your guests feel happy.

Give your home a major facelift with a wall tapestry. These lightweight, intricate pieces add a more bohemian flair to your home. Find one that fits your style, whether it be a simplistic nature scene or a geometric design.

Consider adding one or two plants into your space. If you don’t have a lot of space, you can try smaller plants like succulents. They make great indoor plants. Their unique cool toned colors can make any room look zen. Cacti, plant lilies, and weeping figs are great options as well. House plants, no matter how small, give more color to your space. › Changing the Atmosphere Invite positive energy into your space by burning incense. It’s an amazing alternative to using sage.

It not only helps make your place smell wonderful but it also rids the home of negative energy. It will feel as if you just moved in. Scents like vanilla and lavender are ideal. Use incense consistently and your home will feel brand new again.

Essential oils are wonderful for the mind, body, and soul. Consider investing in a good essential oil diffuser. It will purify your home’s air quality by infusing the fresh scent of whatever oil of your choice. Try minty scents like eucalyptus or zesty smells like lemongrass. Both are ideal to healing the body of aches, relieving stress, and improving your mood. Adding an essential oil diffuser to your home will help you feel better about your overall space.

Having a home is one thing. Making your home feel like one is another. You can achieve that by just a few alterations. By implementing these tips, your home will not only look new but will feel like more of a sanctuary.
