Transitional Architecture / Transformative Spaces Woodbury, 2014 Graduate Studio Work Course Instructor: Anthony Fontenot Thia project explored the phenomenon of “transition” and the implications of moving from one state of being to another. Central to the study was the question of the “in between” as both a physical and psychological condition, ranging from the scale of a dwelling unit to the city. To test the idea, a new type of “Halfway House” served as the program, designed to help make a transition from prison to civilian life. The goal was to create a “transitional architecture” that would blur the line between captivity and freedom, enclosure and exposure, and home and city.

3D Rendering The drawing in the left was a hyper realistic sectional rendering and muti-unit housing project that portrayed its immediate relationship to the urban housing context of Old China Town Los Angeles.

Transitional Strategy The phenomenon of transitional skin was manifested through a series of drawings of various skin iterations of sustainable urban forms that in essence began to generate themselves through a process of blending. The exploration of city into building was also formed through multiple kinds of transitions and through a shifting of single unit capsules in order to create new interior to exterior conditions. Aggregation was used as a voiding component creating a gradient from small to large-scale unit operations.

Floor plans Seen here are a series of for the project that contained small single individual units.

These units created a physical connection to the single city dweller. They exhibited gradual shifts of hierarchy as methods of accelerated transition. The goal here was to generate an ideal community of forward moving technological development.

Acoustical Flavian Amphitheatre Woodbury, 2012 Graduate Studio Work Course Instructor: Ewan Branda My mission for this project was to create an envelope system that could transform an acoustic environment through dynamic spatial, material and electro-acoustic technologies. The aim was to develop a sound sphere able to adjust its properties in response to changing sonic conditions, altering the sound of a space during performance and creating enough that it might be capable of being played. the application of multi-functional material treatments within a volumetrically variable acoustic space paired with kinetic operation digitally controlled via environmental sensing.

Process Elevations The elevational Iterations here were generated as a process of line segmentation and the study of surface fused and obsorbed sound to create unique atmosphere.The ondulating surfaces created a void in the heart of the building for festive musical display and distinct spacial quality.

Floor plans The series of plans shown here are an overreaction to form development through the process of grasshopper scripting. In this case, the modulated aggregates are located in the main entrances that accomidate acces from all four four acoustic directions of intersection. For the project, acoustic levels are at low frequency at the transitional tunnels, while at higher midigation at the active open core. The vertical multilevels mixed public and private conditions.

Sectional Iterations The series of sections show a visual of the modulated absolute that decorates the interior of the civic area as a celebrated music condition.

The aggregates here created a tunnel that acted as accoustic insulators of electro technologies.

Threshold Hive Gallery Hollywood, CA 2011 Graduate Studio Work Course Instructor: Linda Taalman

Spaces within Spaces M.Arch 1 Design Studio led by Linda Taalman and Rebecca Rudolph, and Visualization: Techniques in Marking Semiment of the semester took the form of a collaborative student installation for a temporary display space in the Woodbury University Hollywood Gallery WUHo, in an exhibition titled Super!

Interior Lighting the lighting design focused primarily on circulation and program.

The gradation from dark to light was very apparent when transitioning from the front gallery to the Hive’s main space. In the day, highlighting the models and drawings. At night, the skins utilized a combination of incandescent which illuminate the shearing path and drawings in the exhibit. Push lights are also used to highlight models from the competition proposals of each participating teams.

Installation Design and Effects

6” sides x 15” deep (double-wall corrugated cardboard), 8” sides x 10” deep (double-wall), 10” sides x 10” deep (single-wall), 12 sides x 10” deep (single-wall), and 12” sides x 5” deep (single-wall); totaling 600 hexagons fabricated by hand. The hexagons were aggregated using over 1200 screw-rivets, with smaller and more compacted hexagons on the bottom of the structure and larger and lighter hexagons on the top.

Catenary Whorl Los Angeles, CA 2012 Graduate Visualization Work Course Instructor: David Freeland Catenary Whorl is an undulating canopy composed of 5,000 feet of soft, thick rope, which hangs from the ceiling of the restaurant Little Bear in downtown Los Angeles. Conceived as part of David Freeland’s graduate advanced visualization seminar at Woodbury University, the canopy was intended to diffuse and absorb sound while creating a new, unique atmosphere for the restaurant. The rope is hand-dyed and the hues correspond with regions of color intensity identifying areas of acoustic absorption. Because the rope is hung more densely in some areas than others, the undulating surface subdivides the restaurant into smaller volumes, reducing reverberation time and creating distinct spatial qualities for bar, lounge, and dining areas.

Goal The canopy is the result of a semester long investigation into the potential for drawing to invigorate a new set of spatial effects in architecture. The students employed computational drawing techniques to analyze and respond to a series of dynamic

Dank Mesa Los Angeles, CA 2012 Graduate Studio Work Course Instructor: Joshua Stein This project allowed me to reconsider how architecture interacts with the landscape. It new landscape development. Seen here are some explorations done for topographic surface manipulation. Rockite and concrete were used as a study of various ways of uncovering spatial opportunity. The project was situated in-between a humid environment and the ground below to capture raw wasult, the project also experiments with how architecture situates itself between ÂŹa viscous landscape.

3D Rendering The drawing in the left was a hyper realistic rendering of a prototype research facillity that adapted to climatic arid conditiions by sustaining tself through passive cooling implementation.

Slip Art Throughout the studio a series of operations on the lanscape were done in order to transform its occupation. Surface movements were genrated through scenic inhabitational patterns. Microclimate conditions were also generated through the tracking of geological changing wind patterns that eventually became Ideal landscape building zones for human compfort.
