FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: Summarizing the year in the life of SPACE is no simple task. Within these pages we set to tell our story through an archive of names we are grateful for, proud points of data, and fragments of programmatic highlights. While this is a useful time capsule, it can’t possibly speak to the magic of every program or the magnitude of personal experiences with the arts. I wish we could report on the sheer volume of art projects created upstairs in a year of the SPACE studios or even the number of stitches knit by two audience members (on stage!) during one of our concerts. It’s powerful to think about the uncounted masses of foot traffic who saw the Creative Time flag projects on Congress Street and the profusion of scissor cuts to produce Justin Favela’s signature piñata mural installation. Meanwhile, the untold quantity of tears or laughs evoked by the poems, films, songs, and more that fill our walls is ever-growing. At the end of the day, the arts transform us in ways no number can quantify. We thank you for making 2018 a memorable year for SPACE in the myriad ways you support arts, artists, and ideas. I extend my deepest gratitude to our recently departed co-founder Jon Courtney, whose programs and vision will forever remain a point of pride. Special thanks are deeply due to outgoing board member Yemaya St. Clair, whose leadership championed the organization through growth spurts and dynamic change. As we take time to reflect back, we find ourselves perpetually looking to the future. The 2019 year has been off to an incredible beginning among new talented faces and especially brave ideas. Join us in building a multitude of experiences we could never dream to tally. With gratitude, Kelsey Halliday Johnson Executive Director

THE K A statewide granting program for artist-organized projects throughout Maine, administered by SPACE as part of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Regional Regranting Network. The Kindling Fund celebrates risk and experimentation, and grantees value unconventional engagement, critical dialogue, collaboration, and create new models for presenting artists’ work. In 2018, these projects featured more participating artists than ever before, initiated new connections and opportunities for Maine artists locally and nationally, and expanded the dialogue with press ranging from National Fisherman Magazine to Art in America.
