YESLER BRANCH LIBRARY Design Studio VI Spring 2014 Seattle, WA

Yesler is a residential neighborhood located in the southwest region of Seattle. The area is comprised mostly of single family homes, a vast percentage of these homes belonging to young families with adults ranging from 25-35 year of age. Much like other branch libraries of Seattle, the Yesler Branch Library aims to become a center of education and information, with an emphasis on art and digital media.

The library exists in immediate proximity to the homes nearby creating a challenge for a program of this nature to exist without interrupting the quiet and local atmosphere of the community. The narrow site, which limits the building to nearly a 25’ x 97’ footprint, also features a 10 ft incline towards the street corner. To alleviate the site of the building’s massive form, the library’s exterior is clad in perforated concrete panels. The pixelated facade is a reflection of the digital and media art that the library houses, with sizes in the perforations varying according to the amount of light and views that are desired within the spaces.

FACADE DIAGRAM

The building includes a café, tech room, small theatre, reading spaces, children’s area, and offices for library personnel. Terraces at the east and western end allow for the occupant to enjoy the local skyline of the immediate surroundings as well as a view onto the active Seattle skyline.

The cantilevered volume holds a small auditorium and provides a covering for visitors to admire the local graffiti that originated at the site, paying an homage to the existing art and vibrancy of the neighborhood.

A NEW NORTHERN GATE Design Studio VII Fall 2014 Italy, ROME

Historically, Porta del Popolo has long since been considered as the Northern entrance to the city of Rome.

Passage through the gate was pertinent in the pilgrimage to the Vatican. As a landmark, the gate allowed for its visitors to easily navigate themselves in relation to the rest of Rome. Today, the gate stands proudly as it welcomes you into one of the most significant piazzas of the world. It is also rightfully overcrowded.

As the city surrounding this section of the Aurealian wall developed, the traffic and circulation on either sides of the Northern Gate grew to become separate systems.

Commuters and visitors entering from the north are led from metros, trams, and bus stops to one crosswalk into the narrow sidewalk of the gate. The Borghese Park on the north eastern corner of the piazza gathers tourists and visitors who are also subject to the crowded paths near the gate.

This project re-imagines how we enter the piazza by taking the present congestion around the gate into consideration and providing a new connection for visitors and commuters alike. Visitors are led up east from the piazza towards the Pincian Hill and led down into the Borghese Park. The pedestrian bridge cuts through a visitor center that explains the historical significance of the gate and park, and it’s significance in the history of Rome.

SUPERTALL Design Studio X Spring 2016 Chicago, IL

At the junction of North Lake Shore Drive and the Chicago River, a slip of land surrounded by water on three sides remains called Ogden Slip. Initially built as grounds for docks and warehouses, the site has now become an important waterfront to the residential and commercial occupants of the neighborhood.

This project aims to continue the timelessness of the Chicago skyline with towers that imbue economic and historic significance while still tending to the human experience which remains largely pedestrian within its neighborhood.

There are two towers; the first consisting of office and residential spaces - and a hotel tower to its south. The towers are bridged by four stories of shared public/ commercial space that sit between the office and residential floors and spans across to the top of the hotel. This space, the “Skyplaza”, is an extension of the pedestrian experience at the street level, as the bridge functions as a secondary public space floating above the towers’ riverfront plazas. The two towers stand fortified at the edge of the city, marking the stark transition between the concrete studded horizon to the vastness of nature. The gate-like appearance serves to create a procession from the city to the shores of Lake Michigan both symbolically and physically.

The structure - spanning 120 floors - uses an outrigger truss system with a shear concrete core. The Skyplaza is sustained via an independent truss system which aligns with the secondary supports of both towers. The tower’s mechanical floors and belt truss systems are arranged to accommodate the elevator systems and have the added benefit of accentuating the height of the structure.

Net Zero Multi-Unit Housing Design Studio VIII Spring 2015 Portland, OR

Portland, Oregon is known to be a progressive and vibrant city, comprised of many communities that value productive, green-friendly lifestyles. For this reason, the city experiences a rise in the number of newcomers each year, thus making it difficult to properly meet the housing demands for new and old residents alike. By earning the energy that its inhabitants use, this project aims to create housing that is both affordable and accommodating to the needs of different lifestyles, while additionally contributing to the sense of community for its residents.

The project sits at the intersection of E Burnside St and NE Sandy Blvd, just a few blocks across the river and east of Downtown Portland. The building is organized into quadrants of micro apartments, micro lofts, single apartments, and double apartments. By arranging the quadrants to stagger from the lowest floor in the south east to the highest north west, the apartments are allowed more direct sunlight and stronger passive energy systems. Residents are also provided with an outdoor area that connects as a trail directly from their apartments up to the fifth floor.

In compliance with the local zoning code, the building incorporates a 4-over-1 building strategy using concrete and cross-laminated timber (CLT). CLT allows low-cost manufacturing and assembly, and is a suitable building material for the Northwest climate. The building’s energy is supported by solar panels, passive energies, and geothermal wells.
