Following a robust 2017, the first half of 2018 followed suit with an 8% increase in the number of yachts sold in the 24m+ category versus the same period in 2017 and 2016. The first six months of 2018 saw an impressive 269 motor yachts sold and 243 listed for sale, creating a solid market with positive activity and much interest from buyers. The US continues to dominate the market in terms of sales, driven by its strong economy.

Similar to 2017, 89% of yachts sold were motor yachts. Displacement and semi-displacement yachts are still highest in demand, but enquiries for explorer type yachts and world cruisers have been steadily increasing as clients look for

more adventurous yachts. A major driver in the sales market is a strong charter market on both sides of the Atlantic. In this active market, the first yachts to sell are those that

are quality brands that are well maintained and fairly priced. More specifically, good quality, displacement yachts in the 50+ meter range with a low age are becoming increasingly scarce, and new entrants to the market in this category are selling fast.

A significant 76% of sales completed in the first six months of 2018 were in the 24m – 40m size range, a small increase versus 2017. This is likely due to a growing interest in entry-point yachts and a rise in the numbers of clients making the move into superyacht ownership for the first time.

Positive activity can also be seen in the new build market where the total number of superyachts under construction also increased compared to 2017, with strong order books at leading yards. 163 new yachts were delivered in H1, an estimated increase versus the same period year ago. 67% of these yachts were in the 24m - 40m size range, again reflective of a rise in numbers of entry-point yachts and the average fleet length was 36 meters.

Trends in new build include the increase in customization in smaller sized yachts, primarily in the 30m - 40m segment. The 40 to 50 meter category continues to see design innovation driven by an increase in competition; builders traditionally focused on smaller boats are increasingly introducing yachts in this size range to meet customer demand. The hype around explorer yachts remains, with this style of design being introduced in smaller size ranges as demand rises.
