IWFC v Wroxham Programme 40pp 12.4.25

Page 1

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The GBS Stadium where we welcome Wroxham FC a side that are in good recent form.

The 2 sides drew in the away fixture earlier in the season so we expect a tough battle this afternoon.

Michael and Jack have the team prepared and there is a confidence building after last weeks away win against Cambridge City.

The club would like to congratulate our Thurlow Nunn u18 team for winning the league with 3 games to go and great to see several of this side featuring in the side today. We would also like to congratulate our Ipswich Wanderers Development side for progressing to the Junior Cup final at Portman Road on the 29th May after a hard fought semi final against Stanton FC First where they won on penalties.

So with all the positives around the ground despite the first team getting relegated I hope you enjoy the game today and we hope for another win from our our young first team as we prepare for next season.

IPSWICH WANDERERS CLUB HISTORY

> The Club started as an under 14’s boys team in 1980. Two yrs later they entered the lowest division of the Ipswich Sunday League.

> Joined the newly formed Eastern Counties Division One sponsored by Jewsons in 1987 as founder members.

> Home games were played at our present ground at Humber Doucy Lane, under the name of Loadwell Ipswich. Jimmy Barker became a very influential chairman and he negotiated a name change to Lancaster Ipswich FC before we eventually became Ipswich Wanderers. Jimmy died in November 1994 and his presence is sadly missed. Thankfully after all his work he saw the floodlights switched on in September 1994 in a match against Ipswich Town.

> Great ground improvements were made in the early years under the direction of Development Officer Roger Woshalo and ground Manager Tim Davey.

> A losing Suffolk Senior Cup appearance in 1996/97 lead to the following season becoming Champions of Division One, under the Chairmanship of Alan Haste, nine points clear of Maldon Town and losing only three league matches all season. Reaping the rewards of a successful youth policy which saw numerous trophies filling the clubhouse cabinet, a well organised side with a good balance between youth and experience saw us establish ourselves as a Premier Division side for a number of seasons until we suffered relegation on the last day of the 2002/3 season at Wisbech.

> The following season saw Jason Dozzell join the Club as Manager and after a midtable finish in his first campaign, the second season saw the Club sweep to the 1st Division title and with the assistance of Kevin Cunningham and Glynn Hague, the team finished 7th in the Premier Division in 2005/6, with the League’s second best defence with home crowds on average exceeding 100.

> At the end of the 2005/6 Jason Dozzell and Chairman David Bugg left. Local businessman Ed Nicholls became Chairman and John Clarkson was appointed Manager having arrived with a reputation from the West Country. During the season he guided the club to the final of the Ridgeons League Cup, the 5th round of the FA Vase and a Suffolk Premier Cup Semi Final against Ipswich Town.

> At the end of the campaign John left the Club and with an exodus of players, the Club appointed ex player Louis Newman to the role, Louis built a young, inexperienced squad and after a poor start to the campaign which included some record defeats, was replaced by another former player Steve Buckle who was brought in to rebuild the squad and hopefully retain the Clubs’s premier status. Unfortunately Steve was unable to prevent relegation and the only positive from the season was the Reserves capture of the Chell Trophy defeating Wroxham.

> Despite Steve’s best efforts over the following few seasons the Club failed to build a promotion push throughout the campaigns and after a poor start to the 2011/12 season, Steve and Assistant Paul Grainger parted company with the Club. New chairman Terry Fenwick appointed Glenn Read and he brought in his own players and former Stowmarket Town boss Steve Jay as his assistant. He quickly revamped the squad and had the Club climbing the table before the end of the season.

> The 2012/3 season saw the Club just fail to clinch promotion to the Premier Division and lose on penalties in the semi final in the First Division Cup. The season did finish on a high as the Club clinched its first ever Suffolk Senior Cup trophy defeating local rivals Whitton United in the final. It was a remarkable victory coming from a goal down in normal time and then from 3-0 down in the penalty shoot out.

> 2013/14 saw promotion achieved with two long unbeaten runs ensuring a return to the Premier Division, we also lost a tight Senior Cup final against Whitton United and set a new club record with a 12-1 win over Downham Town.

> The 2014/15 was mixed as we adapted to Premier Division and finished 9th and enjoyed a good run in the FA Vase but off field the club lost one of its driving forces Roger Wosahlo mid-season.

> In 2015-16 we defeated Canvey Island in the FA Cup and enjoy our best ever FA Vase run but with a heavy fixture backlog, relegation fears were only ended just before the season end. Glenn stepped down at the end of the season and for 2016-17 the Club appointed Shane Wardley as Player/Manager.

> Shane’s first season saw us almost emulate our highest ever position, however, after a poor start to the 2017-18 season Shane resigned and following a disastrous spell under Mark Benterman, club legend Mark Goldfinch took over the side ably assisted by James Buckle and Daniel Thrower. Unfortunately, relegation could not be avoided and in 2018-19 we consolidated and lost in the Senior Cup Semi Final to Cornard.

> In 2019-20 with Stephen Boyle taking over as Chairman, we rebuilt and after a sticky spell in October we were closing in on the promotion pack and reached a Semi Final of the Suffolk Senior Cup before the season came to an abrupt end. With further additions on field and some good improvements off field under Stephen’s leadership, we then looked to gain the vital promotion required for us to take the next steps forward with a good squad. The start to the next season was positive and a second Senior Cup trophy was clinched in the delayed final with a single strike from Connor Field clinching the trophy.

> After a couple of Covid-19 disrupted and curtailed seasons, for the 2021/22 season Wanderers went into action in the Thurlow Nunn First Division South. With what became a tight run affair and particular rivalry with Buckhurst Hill also aiming for the title, it went almost to the wire, Wanderers finally having the upper hand, and lifting the trophy with a goal 10 seconds from time in the final home game. With the final of the Suffolk Senior Cup to follow, we finished the season with 26 straight wins, and a well deserved double of league and cup was won!

> The following season started with four cup fixtures in the opening 7 games, and a haul of just 3 points from the first 5 league games meant Wanderers were already playing catch up when our league campaign really got going. A run of 6 wins in an 8 game unbeaten run helped to move us up the table before another rare defeat. More wins followed until in January, we visited top of the table Thetford, which ended in a 1-2 defeat. After this, Wanderers embarked on another 17-game winning run to the end of the season, including coming from behind to avenge the result against Thetford, going above them and ultimately become Thurlow Nunn Premier winners - back to back champions - and into Step 4 football for the first time in the club’s history.

> The 2023/24 season, the first for the club in the Isthmian League North came with added pressure - both on and off the pitch. A poor start to the season on the pitch brought a change in September, with the departure of Mark Goldfinch & James Buckle. Glen Driver came in as manager, with the task of keeping the club clear of relegation. Off the pitch was a mammoth job with a huge amount of work needed to pass the ground grading requirements to stay at this level. The inspection in April brought a great deal of relief, and along with the efforts of Glen and his team on the pitch, meant the aims for the season were achieved. Now to move forwards into 2024/25 and properly compete...

from the dugout

VIEW FROM THE BOSS

Firstly, I want to say how proud I am of the lads after that strong performance and well-earned victory last weekend.

It was a display of character, discipline, and desire—everything we’ve been working on throughout the season. The support from the fans was outstanding, and it gave the players that extra lift to see the job through.

As we head into our final two home fixtures, the message is clear: let’s finish strong. We’ve made great strides this season, and these last games are a chance to show how far we’ve come. There’s still work to be done, and we owe it to ourselves, the club, and our supporters to leave everything out there on the pitch.

I want to see us playing with freedom, intensity, and togetherness—exactly the qualities that brought us success last time out. Let’s take that momentum into these last two matches and end the season on a high.

Thanks as always for your support—let’s make the most of these final games and give you something to cheer about.

TODAY’S VISITORS TO THE DOUCY

We welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Wroxham FC CLUB

HISTORY

Wroxham FC were established in 1892 by GE Preston, a former captain of the Norfolk County team, and initially played on Wroxham Park. The club played friendly matches until joining the East Norfolk League and the Norwich City Junior League. In 1935 they joined the East Anglian League, before dropping down to the Norwich and District League in the 1950s, a time during which they suffered a record 24-0 defeat.

In 1963 the club became founder members of the Anglian Combination. A successful spell during the mid-1970s saw the club rise through the divisions. In 1975 the club won its first major trophy, the Norfolk Junior Cup. The following season they won Division Two, and the season after, Division One. In 1981 the club won the Knock-Out Cup, and in 1981-82 they won the Premier Division, retaining the title in 1982-83, 1983-84 and 1984-85, also winning the knock-out cup in 1983 and 1985. They did another league and cup double in 1986-87

In 1988 the club joined the newly formed Division One of the Eastern Counties League. They won the division in their first season, beating Halstead Town to the title on goal difference. After finishing twelfth in their first season in the Premier Division, the club have never finished lower than eighth. They won the title with a record 99 points in 1991-92, before beating their own record with 100 points and another title the following season, the club’s centenary, in which they also won the League Cup and the Norfolk Senior Cup. In 1993-94 they won a third consecutive title. After a gap of two seasons, the club won the Premier Division again with 109 points in 1996-97, also winning the Senior Cup again. They retained the title and the Senior Cup in 1997-98, before winning the League for a third time in a row in 1998-99.

Wroxham won the Norfolk Senior Cup again in 2000, 2002, 2004, the Premier Division in 2006-07, and the Senior Cup again in 2008. In 2009-10 the club reached the final of the FA Vase but lost 6-1 to holders Whitley Bay. In 2015, in a thrilling Norfolk Senior Cup Final, they beat local rivals Dereham Town 3-2 after extra time.

Since the club was formed, Wroxham F.C. have played at several venues. The first was just off Norwich Road and subsequent grounds were at The Avenue and Keys Hill. The Avenue ground has now reverted to agricultural use, whilst the others have been built upon.

Around the time of World War II, Wroxham moved to their

current ground, Trafford Park, a field close to the railway line in Skinners Lane. The club took with them an old timber pavilion that was erected and used as a primitive clubhouse. Fifteen years later this was replaced by prefabricated buildings, which were themselves flattened to make way for a new permanent clubhouse that was opened in 1994.

The current main stand, the Les King Stand, was built in 1990, replacing an earlier structure that had stood on the same site for around 10 years. The capacity at Trafford Park is 2,000 but the record attendance to date is 1,262 for the FA Vase semi-final against Whitehawk in 2010.

Wroxham finally took the opportunity to take promotion to Step 4 joining the Isthmian Division 1 North in season 2012/13 and played for 5 seasons with mixed fortunes.

After a disappointing 2016-17 season, The Yachtsmen returned to Step 5 with a new management team of Ross Potter & Tom Parke. After a promising start the team were soon out of the prestigious FA Cup failing for the first time in 22 years to get past the first hurdle. Form dipped around mid-season as the more experienced partnership of Jamie Godbold & Andy Reynolds were brought in. While we reached the semi-final of the League Cup, eventually losing to Brantham Athletic, League form remained erratic and we finished 13th in the table. This was the lowest finish we have ever had in the Eastern Counties Premier Division.

Goldbold & Reynolds shocked the club by announcing they would be leaving to join their old club Lowestoft Town. The Board acted quickly by appointing Reserve Manager Jordan Southgate assisted then by ex-Norwich City Hall of Fame player Adam Drury, to take charge. They put together a youthful squad an finished a credible 7th in 2018/19.

Behind the scenes the then Club Chairman Lee Robson did an amazing job developing a Wroxham Juniors section with teams at most age group from U7 to U18. With a strong Academy and U18’s we hope to develop players who want to play the Wroxham way for the future. Wroxham saw Women’s football for the first time at the Club with an Eastern Region Premier Division team (formerly Acle United) gracing Trafford Park.

2019/20 saw the Yachtsmen finish the truncated campaign in fifth place (although the League subsequently declared all results void) having hovered around the runner-up spot for much of the season, conceding only 18 goals in 25 matches – a total bettered

FC visitors to

only by table-topping Stowmarket Town. However, the Club’s major successes of the season came in the FA Vase with a run to the quarter final. Two home attendances of around 1000, against Stowmarket Town in the 5th Round and Bitton AFC in the quarter final, generated much local interest and raised the profile of the Club regionally. Prior to the cessation of all football the Yachtsmen were defeated by Dereham Town in the semi-final of the Norfolk Senior Cup.

The 2020/21 campaign was also curtailed by COVID despite us leading the table with 10 straight wins.

We were not promoted to the Isthmian League until the 2022-23 season , after finishing 2nd to Gorleston we went up as one of the top 10 Step 5 clubs on a Points Per Game analysis by The FA .

After a rocky start to the 2022-23 season, the team soon adjusted to the demands of Isthmian League football and finished in a mid-table position. After consolidating our position in Isthmian League North, we hope to press on during this season.

At the end of the 2022-23 season the then chairman, Lee Robson, informed the club that he was relocating back to Wales and James Blower took on this role at the club. Last season in spite of financial constraints, a backlog of fixtures that resulted in playing 7 games in less than two weeks, and a series of injuries that depleted the squad, the club finished in midtable in Isthmian League North.

After a couple of months after leaving the club during the autumn of the 2024-25 season , Jordan Southgate returned to the Yachtsmen and appointed an experienced

assistant, Danny Crow. Together their aim for the current campaign is to steer the club away from the relegation zone and towards the midtable where the Yachtsmen have finished in the last two seasons.

Away from the Isthmian League, the club recently reached the final of the Norfolk Senior Cup for the first time in a decade. The Yachtsmen will play Norwich City Under21s in an end of season final at Carrow Road.

youthdevelopment

Our Youth Development has gone from strength to strength in recent seasons, growing from just three teams in 2022 to seven teams this year, with a new Under 23 side representing Wanderers in the Thurlow Nunn Under 23 league and an additional Eastern Junior Alliance side joining the two that started out last year.

The good news stories from those sides could fill a programme by themselves so to highlight a few of this season’s achievement.

Our SIL Development side have consolidated their position in Division 1 this season following back-to-back promotions. The side have a number of players who feature in our Under 18 sides and despite not challenging for promotion this season, they have laid great foundations for next year by reaching the final of the Suffolk Junior Cup and a trip to Portman Road on May 29th for the final.

The Under 23s inaugural season has been a success with the side challenging for the top spots in the league. A side that has also featured a majority of players aged 17 or 18 (plus some under 16s), it has given a platform for some of our younger lads to experience Saturday afternoon football and challenge themselves against players much older and more experienced than themselves.

The continued success of our Under 18 sides has been evident this season with the Thurlow Nunn side clinching the league title last week after a season long battle with two or three other sides at the top of the table. The success of the team has not gone unnoticed by Bruvs and the first team coaches who have had players not only joining them for training but featuring regularly as starters or substitutes for the first team in recent weeks.

Our Saturday morning SYFL Under 18 side also had a solid season and provided a number of players into the Thurlow Nunn sides. It also provided an opportunity for players from our

Under 16 Easter Junior Alliance (EJA) to get a taste of an older age group in readiness for their progress into full-time Under 18 football next season.

The Eastern Junior Alliance (EJA) sides have built on last year’s debut seasons and although it has been a steep learning curve for all three sides in 24/25, there is progress throughout and players who continue to improve and even feature in higher age group football as the year has gone on.

A special mention to all of those people involved in each and every team who give up their time for training, travel, games and everything in between. Without their hard work and dedication, the teams would not be able to run and the club would not benefit from the homegrown talent that has been featuring in first team games this season.

All of this would not be possible without the Head of Youth Development (and co-chairman) Rick Kerry who came to the club and saw what needed to be done to grow our talent pool and put in place the structures to build a thriving youth section. The future is very much blue and white……

12th April 2022 - Buckhurst Hill 0 Wanderers 2
