IWFC v Felixstowe Programme 40pp 21.4.25

Page 1

This afternoon, we welcome Felixstowe & Walton to the GBS Stadium for our final home game of the season.

With it being a local derby and the Bank Holiday weekend, we’re hoping for a big crowd and a lively atmosphere to round things off.

On behalf of myself/Rick and the committee, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our supporters. It’s been a challenging season, both on and off the pitch, but your loyalty and backing have meant the world to us.

Rest assured, we’re already working hard behind the scenes as we prepare for what promises to be an exciting and successful 2025/26 campaign.

I would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Kris Rose, who has led the club with passion, integrity and true leadership. With 215 appearances and 25 goals, he’s been a credit to the badge, and we’d love to see him remain around the club in some capacity going forward.

Enjoy the game, and thank you once again for your continued support.

IPSWICH WANDERERS CLUB HISTORY

> The Club started as an under 14’s boys team in 1980. Two yrs later they entered the lowest division of the Ipswich Sunday League.

> Joined the newly formed Eastern Counties Division One sponsored by Jewsons in 1987 as founder members.

> Home games were played at our present ground at Humber Doucy Lane, under the name of Loadwell Ipswich. Jimmy Barker became a very influential chairman and he negotiated a name change to Lancaster Ipswich FC before we eventually became Ipswich Wanderers. Jimmy died in November 1994 and his presence is sadly missed. Thankfully after all his work he saw the floodlights switched on in September 1994 in a match against Ipswich Town.

> Great ground improvements were made in the early years under the direction of Development Officer Roger Woshalo and ground Manager Tim Davey.

> A losing Suffolk Senior Cup appearance in 1996/97 lead to the following season becoming Champions of Division One, under the Chairmanship of Alan Haste, nine points clear of Maldon Town and losing only three league matches all season. Reaping the rewards of a successful youth policy which saw numerous trophies filling the clubhouse cabinet, a well organised side with a good balance between youth and experience saw us establish ourselves as a Premier Division side for a number of seasons until we suffered relegation on the last day of the 2002/3 season at Wisbech.

> The following season saw Jason Dozzell join the Club as Manager and after a midtable finish in his first campaign, the second season saw the Club sweep to the 1st Division title and with the assistance of Kevin Cunningham and Glynn Hague, the team finished 7th in the Premier Division in 2005/6, with the League’s second best defence with home crowds on average exceeding 100.

> At the end of the 2005/6 Jason Dozzell and Chairman David Bugg left. Local businessman Ed Nicholls became Chairman and John Clarkson was appointed Manager having arrived with a reputation from the West Country. During the season he guided the club to the final of the Ridgeons League Cup, the 5th round of the FA Vase and a Suffolk Premier Cup Semi Final against Ipswich Town.

> At the end of the campaign John left the Club and with an exodus of players, the Club appointed ex player Louis Newman to the role, Louis built a young, inexperienced squad and after a poor start to the campaign which included some record defeats, was replaced by another former player Steve Buckle who was brought in to rebuild the squad and hopefully retain the Clubs’s premier status. Unfortunately Steve was unable to prevent relegation and the only positive from the season was the Reserves capture of the Chell Trophy defeating Wroxham.

> Despite Steve’s best efforts over the following few seasons the Club failed to build a promotion push throughout the campaigns and after a poor start to the 2011/12 season, Steve and Assistant Paul Grainger parted company with the Club. New chairman Terry Fenwick appointed Glenn Read and he brought in his own players and former Stowmarket Town boss Steve Jay as his assistant. He quickly revamped the squad and had the Club climbing the table before the end of the season.

> The 2012/3 season saw the Club just fail to clinch promotion to the Premier Division and lose on penalties in the semi final in the First Division Cup. The season did finish on a high as the Club clinched its first ever Suffolk Senior Cup trophy defeating local rivals Whitton United in the final. It was a remarkable victory coming from a goal down in normal time and then from 3-0 down in the penalty shoot out.

> 2013/14 saw promotion achieved with two long unbeaten runs ensuring a return to the Premier Division, we also lost a tight Senior Cup final against Whitton United and set a new club record with a 12-1 win over Downham Town.

> The 2014/15 was mixed as we adapted to Premier Division and finished 9th and enjoyed a good run in the FA Vase but off field the club lost one of its driving forces Roger Wosahlo mid-season.

> In 2015-16 we defeated Canvey Island in the FA Cup and enjoy our best ever FA Vase run but with a heavy fixture backlog, relegation fears were only ended just before the season end. Glenn stepped down at the end of the season and for 2016-17 the Club appointed Shane Wardley as Player/Manager.

> Shane’s first season saw us almost emulate our highest ever position, however, after a poor start to the 2017-18 season Shane resigned and following a disastrous spell under Mark Benterman, club legend Mark Goldfinch took over the side ably assisted by James Buckle and Daniel Thrower. Unfortunately, relegation could not be avoided and in 2018-19 we consolidated and lost in the Senior Cup Semi Final to Cornard.

> In 2019-20 with Stephen Boyle taking over as Chairman, we rebuilt and after a sticky spell in October we were closing in on the promotion pack and reached a Semi Final of the Suffolk Senior Cup before the season came to an abrupt end. With further additions on field and some good improvements off field under Stephen’s leadership, we then looked to gain the vital promotion required for us to take the next steps forward with a good squad. The start to the next season was positive and a second Senior Cup trophy was clinched in the delayed final with a single strike from Connor Field clinching the trophy.

> After a couple of Covid-19 disrupted and curtailed seasons, for the 2021/22 season Wanderers went into action in the Thurlow Nunn First Division South. With what became a tight run affair and particular rivalry with Buckhurst Hill also aiming for the title, it went almost to the wire, Wanderers finally having the upper hand, and lifting the trophy with a goal 10 seconds from time in the final home game. With the final of the Suffolk Senior Cup to follow, we finished the season with 26 straight wins, and a well deserved double of league and cup was won!

> The following season started with four cup fixtures in the opening 7 games, and a haul of just 3 points from the first 5 league games meant Wanderers were already playing catch up when our league campaign really got going. A run of 6 wins in an 8 game unbeaten run helped to move us up the table before another rare defeat. More wins followed until in January, we visited top of the table Thetford, which ended in a 1-2 defeat. After this, Wanderers embarked on another 17-game winning run to the end of the season, including coming from behind to avenge the result against Thetford, going above them and ultimately become Thurlow Nunn Premier winners - back to back champions - and into Step 4 football for the first time in the club’s history.

> The 2023/24 season, the first for the club in the Isthmian League North came with added pressure - both on and off the pitch. A poor start to the season on the pitch brought a change in September, with the departure of Mark Goldfinch & James Buckle. Glen Driver came in as manager, with the task of keeping the club clear of relegation. Off the pitch was a mammoth job with a huge amount of work needed to pass the ground grading requirements to stay at this level. The inspection in April brought a great deal of relief, and along with the efforts of Glen and his team on the pitch, meant the aims for the season were achieved. Now to move forwards into 2024/25 and properly compete...

VIEW FROM THE BOSS

Welcome back to the GBS Stadium for what promises to be a huge afternoon of football as we take on Felixstowe & Walton United in what is undoubtedly one of our biggest games of the season.

There’s no hiding from it – this is a real test. Felixstowe are a strong side, well-organised and competitive in all areas of the pitch. We know what’s at stake, and we know what’s required. The lads have been fully focused in training, and the energy around the group has been excellent. Coming off the back of an away win at Basildon on Saturday - we’re ready!

Today also marks a significant moment for the club as we say farewell – on home turf – to someone who’s been at the heart of things for a long time. Rosey plays his final game at the GBS Stadium this afternoon, and I know everyone connected to the club will want to thank him for his incredible commitment, leadership, and passion. He’s given everything to this club, and it’s only right we send him off in style.

Let’s get behind the boys from the first whistle to the last. This is a big one – together, let’s make it count.

FELIXSTOWE & WALTON UTD FC

TODAY’S VISITORS TO THE DOUCY

We welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Felixstowe & Walton Utd FC CLUB HISTORY

Felixstowe & Walton United Football Club aka ‘The Seasiders’ were formed in 2000 from two football clubs who were independent in their own right although they had merged briefly just prior to the Second World War to be called Felixstowe United (not to be confused with the Felixstowe United who played in The Suffolk & Ipswich League) The joining lasted until 1952 when the clubs went their separate ways.

Formed in 1895, Walton United played at The Recreation ground in Recreation Lane, Walton while Felixstowe Town, formed five years earlier played at The Town Ground, Dellwood Avenue. The second amalgamation in 2000 looked a good marriage for the right reasons. Walton United had just won the Suffolk Senior Cup and were on the up but with nowhere to go as the Recreation ground at Walton could not accommodate Eastern Counties League standard facilities. Felixstowe Town had been renamed Felixstowe Port & Town due to their sponsorship by the Port, but when that was withdrawn in 1999/2000 it left the Town club struggling to recover and maintain Eastern Counties League football. It looked and proved to be a good decision by both clubs that they therefore merged with Dellwood Avenue becoming their home Venue.

It was a struggle in the early years after the merger with relegation coming in 2002, but it offered the chance for the club to regroup and focus on the future with a growing youth set up and getting the basics right off the pitch and the club regained Premier Division status in 2006 when they finished runners up in Division One.

Tied by what could be done at their present home the club always found it difficult to compete with the top sides in the Premier Division with what was the unique task of raising and lowering of the floodlights before and after games and the restrictions placed on the club by the local authorities.

The Seasiders remained positive throughout and now have the lights permanently erected during the football season which was the catalyst to develop the rest of the ground and have an excellent youth set up comprising over 20 boys & girls teams from Age 6 upwards.

In July 2017 a new pitchside clubhouse complex opened to replace the old one which has transformed the club and by the end of the 2017/18 season, the Seasiders gained promotion to the Isthmian North Division at Step 4 for the first time in the clubs history. The Reserves were also promoted to the Step 6 Thurlow Nunn First Division.

The clubs first season at Step 4 saw a mid-table finish achieved, with an average attendance of

FELIXSTOWE & WALTON UTD visitors to

400 the highest in the Isthmian North, and second highest in Suffolk behind Ipswich Town. A number of additional ground improvements were completed and the season ended with a trip to Portman Road in the Suffolk FA Premier Cup with over 1,000 Seasiders supporters seeing us finish runners up to Step 3 Leiston after a 3-2 defeat.

The 2019/20 season proved to be a difficult one on and off the pitch with the resultant decision to null & void the campaign due to Covid-19, whereas the Reserves took voluntary demotion to Step 7 and will compete in the Essex & Suffolk Border League. 2020/21 got off to a promising start in the league and a run to the 2nd Round proper of the FA Trophy before the campaign was again ended due to the pandemic.

Summer 2021 saw the Reserves re-branded as Under 23s, part of the clubs strategy to improve the development pathways within the club, alongside the Academy.

The Seasiders enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in their history in 2021/2022, again having a fantastic run in the FA Trophy that saw victories against higher league opposition before exiting in the 2nd round proper. In the Isthmian North league, an incredible run of form from the end of November onwards saw Felixstowe storm into the playoffs with a fifth place finish. Only a heartbreaking late defeat at Canvey Island denied a promotion playoff final appearance.

2022/2023 saw further improvements to the newly renamed AGL Arena, with two new stands opening, a new digital scoreboard and new fencing at each end. On the pitch, another exciting season developed as the Seasiders remained in the thick of the promotion race for the entire season, only missing out on another playoff place on the final day of the season.

2023/2024 The Seasiders narrowly missed out on promotion, losing in the playoff semifinal after a titanic season-long fight for the top spot with Lowestoft Town.

HOW’S IT GOING? - RECENT RESULTS FOR FELIXSTOWE & WALTON

FELIXSTOWE & WALTON UTD visitors to player pen pics

STUART AINSLEY - Stuart joined the club for his second spell in 2014 from Lowestoft Town. Previous clubs include Chelmsford City and AFC Sudbury. Stuart spent 10 years at Ipswich Town, winning the FA Youth Cup in 2005. Stuart has a sweet left foot and a great work ethic.

JOE WHIGHT - Joe came through the ITFC Youth system before playing for the likes of Needham, Bury and most recently AFC Sudbury where he captained their side. A left sided defender, Joe offers composure, a wonderful left foot and a toughness and desire to defend to the back line.

JACK AINSLEY -Rejoined from Stowmarket. Jack played professionally for ITFC after coming through their academy and went on to make 4 appearances playing under Roy Keane. Jack went on to have spells at Step 3 Lowestoft and Leiston but finds himself back at the Seaside where many describe him as a “Rolls Royce” type of player who can play in any position for the team.

BILLY HOLLAND - Billy started life at Ipswich Wanderers and has had spells at Needham, Leiston and AFC Sudbury. He’s established himself as a mainstay in the centre of midfield. Players player and Supporters player of the year for the 22/23 season led to him being appointed captain the following year.

NOEL AITKENS - Noel’s signing for the club in 2020 caused a stir amongst the non-league world, joining from step 3 Leiston and being described by manager Boardley as “the best midfield player in this area”. Noel is quick, strong, can tackle, is athletic and can really play football!

LEON OTTLEY-GOOCH - Leon signed for the club in 2020 and is another vastly experienced player at step 3 and 4 level. Previous clubs include Leiston, Bury Town, Hadleigh Utd and Stowmarket Town. Leon is very versatile but is predominantly a dynamic midfield player.

JOSH HITTER - Josh signed for us in 2021 having played his football at Step 3 side Leiston for the previous three seasons and gained a vast amount of experience at that level. Josh is a dynamic attack minded player who likes to arrive in the box late and score goals.

CALLUM HARRISON - Former Colchester United, Needham, Sudbury and more recently Chelmsford midfielder joined the Seasiders for the 22/23 campaign. A highly sought after creative and technically gifted midfield player that loves to get forward and provide the team with both goals and assists.

KUBI KUSSAN - Another young player promoted to the first team squad from our Academy. Kubi is a technically gifted midfield player who enjoys moving with the ball. He has an edge to his game that has impressed the management throughout preseason.

CHARLIE WARREN - Having initially joined on loan from Needham Market, Charlie made an instant impact on his debut in the FA Trophy win at Hastings. Following a number of impressive performances, manager Boardley moved quickly to secure the permanent services of one of Suffolk’s brightest young players.

ZAK BROWN - A sought after and highly rated young striker with blistering pace and a great goal scoring record. At just 17, Zak penned a two year pro contract with ITFC where he was a regular marksman in the U23’s. Zak started life in the Seasiders Youth sections and has returned to lead the forward line as the clubs No. 9.

SAM FORD - Having spent a successful period with Arbroath last season that saw them just miss out on promotion to the Scottish Premiership, Sam spent the Summer with Hume City FC in Australia before returning to Felixstowe. Coming through ITFC and later West Ham’s academy, Sam is a local talent who will provide real firepower in front of goal.

JOSH MAYHEW - Josh joined us from promotion winners AFC Sudbury. An experienced front man who has been prolific at Step 4 and 5 with an impressive spell at Stowmarket yielding 136 goals in 173 games. Josh’s physical presence will bring a focal point to our attack as well as a being natural finisher who is a proven goalscorer at this level.

HARRY WRIGHT (GK) - Harry started his career as a professional at Ipswich Town and left there in 2021 where he then went on to play for Fleetwood Town and Bury before joining the Seasiders in the summer of 2024. He has quickly become a firm fans favourite and works within the clubs Academy system.

OLLIE BROWN - Ollie was signed in the summer of 2024 from neighbours AFC Sudbury and has played in recent years for Stowmarket and Leiston. An energetic and attacking full back who loves to get forward and create chances and with a wealth of higher level experience to boot.

HUGH CULLUM - Hugh is a local lad who left Felixstowe’s youth system and progressed through the |Needham Market Academy. Hugh signed back with his local club in the summer of 2024 and has immediately impressed with his consistent and confident defending .

HUGO AKHUSEYIN - Hugo is an academy graduate that is now starting to flourish with his progression into the first team squad. A tough tackling and tenacious defender who likes to get forward.

THOMAS WARREN - Another new signing for the summer of 2024 and joins his brother Charlie at the club. Signed from Hadleigh United, Tom is an Athletic, strong and pacy full back or winger with a fantastic left foot and keen eye for a goal.

JORDY MATTHEWS - “Jordy” rejoins the club following a brief spell in retirement. He made his first team debut at 18 and has been a loyal and trusted midfielder for the club for many years clocking up well over 300 appearances. The term ‘club legend’ is often used to describe Jordy and he remains a firm fans favourite for his tenacious and all action style.

CAMERON FORDE-BROWN - Cameron joins us on loan from Kings Lynn having impressed the management at previous loan spells with other clubs. A technically gifted and versatile midfielder, Cam has really hit the ground running this season and continues to impress with both goals and assists that have topped off some exciting displays.

ARCHIE DUNNE - Another promising Academy product who has recently been elevated in to the first team squad. An exciting, pacy forward who has scored a hatful of goals for the Youth sections of the club.

WILLIE CLEMONS - After a successful preseason with the Seasiders Willie decided that Felixstowe were the club for him despite competition from other clubs. A full Bermudan international with 30 plus caps, Willie’s experience, whilst still only 30 years old will be a real asset. An attacking player with bags of quality and creativity he is proving to be an exciting signing.

ROB HARVEY - Signed from Brentwood Town, Rob is a player who has been on Stuart Boardley’s radar for some time. Another of our first team group to work within our Academy setup, Rob is a pacy, fit and dynamic wide player who loves to be direct and excite fans.

ZAC TUVEY (GK) - Zac has impressed consistently with our U18’s and despite his tender age of 16 is playing regularly both for our U18’s and Haverhill Borough first team. Zac is Harry’s understudy, is a fantastic shot stopper and has a bright future in the game
