THANK YOU FOR INVESTING IN IVY TECH’S STUDENTS, COMMUNITIES, STATE AND FUTURE!

The special relationship between Ivy Tech and Indiana is on my mind often, especially when I visit our leaders, students, and community partners across the Hoosier State.

We have 19 campuses that blanket Indiana, and we are committed to building skillsets that elevate new and traditional industries alike. We serve more undergraduate students than any college in the state and more than any singly-accredited statewide community college in the U.S. And as we celebrate our 60th anniversary, we are positioned more than ever to help the next generation of students contribute to Indiana’s communities.

We wrapped up our first-ever comprehensive campaign, Invest IN Ivy Tech, on June 30. This campaign was launched five years ago, and I’m honored to have helped see it through to a successful conclusion. Thanks to our generous supporters, we surpassed our goal of $285 million by an amazing 19 percent to finish at $340 million!

I’m proud of the hundreds of alumni and friends who were part of the campaign – volunteers, staff, and our board, among others – and I’m grateful to the thousands of people who showed their belief in Ivy Tech through their contributions.

Some of you gave to the campaign because you attended Ivy Tech. Some contributed because your children started their education journey here.

Others gave because you are a friend of the college and understand what Ivy Tech means to our communities. Regardless of the reason, we are making an impact.

We produce more nurses with two-year degrees than any college in the nation, and most stay in Indiana to pursue their careers.

Ivy Tech contributes $3.9 billion annually to Indiana’s economy.

Eight of ten students who graduate from Ivy Tech do so without student debt.

The Ivy Tech Foundation celebrated many big moments in the past 12 months. Our first-ever Ivy Tech Day in April resulted in more than 2,000 gifts over an exhilarating 24-hour period. The Lowe’s Foundation awarded grants to 10 U.S. community and technical colleges – including $700,000 to Ivy Tech – to support the skilled trades workforce.

The program will help us to develop a shortterm, HVAC pilot training program for entry-level technicians and training for justice-involved individuals at seven campuses. And Eli Lilly and Company is providing $15 million over the next five years to fund the Lilly Scholars program, enhancing access to careers in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

RYAN RYKER RYAN’S IVY TECH CONNECTION: He is a student at Ivy Tech South Bend.

RYAN’S IMPACT: Ryan is co-founder of Zokos, an e-commerce company that buys and sells returned online goods from companies such as Amazon and Walmart. He also is a co-founder of rScan, which provides technology that cuts the time to post an item for sale from 30 minutes to under two, making it easier for people to participate in the resale market.

STUDENT PROFILE

Consumers return more than $800 billion worth of products to retailers each year. Most returns are in good condition, but $9.6 billion pounds of appliances and other products are tossed away each year. Zokos purchases returns directly from retailers, grades them in their resale lab, and offers the products with the best quality for sale at a discount. The business models of these companies help consumers and the environment alike by facilitating resales of lighting, building and hardware products, kitchen appliances, bathroom products, and more.

MORE FROM RYAN: Zokos and rScan transform what is considered waste into accessible, quality home goods for people in the community and surrounding areas, and Ryan is motivated by the good his company does in the South Bend area and beyond. “This is my hometown, and I want to see it succeed,” he said.

ASHLEY GURVITZ ASHLEY’S IVY TECH CONNECTION: She graduated with a degree in business administration from Ivy Tech Indianapolis before attending Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

ASHLEY’S IMPACT: Ashley is president of United Northeast Community Development Corporation, which elevates the quality of life by facilitating diverse housing options, serving low-income residents, enhancing neighborhood assets, developing business opportunities, and educating the community. Ashley focuses on improving economic development and resources in the community – including the creation of jobs and access to food. She partners with Indiana companies such as Cook Medical, Eskenazi Health, and Anthem to secure an infrastructure to serve people in her community.

MORE FROM ASHLEY: Ashley spends her days advocating for others. She recently helped the neighborhood land a 15,000-foot grocery, creating economic opportunity and giving people a local choice for nutritious food such as fresh meat, fruits, and vegetables.

“In the very neighborhood my 30-something self is serving today is the same place my parents decided to adopt me. My joy is embedded in that, and in seeing others find their niche and passion.”

ALUMNI PROFILE

LILLY’S IVY TECH CONNECTION: Eli Lilly and Company is one of the largest biopharmaceutical companies in the world and has more than 11,500 employees in Indiana. A new $15 million Lilly Scholars program creates scholarship and experiential learning opportunities for high school and college students with diverse backgrounds who intend to pursue careers in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

LILLY’S IMPACT: Lilly’s collaboration with Ivy Tech will provide scholarships to those wanting to pursue two-year degrees or certificates in manufacturing, quality, or related fields. Preference will be given to those who are among the first generation in their family to attend college – comprising 40 percent of Ivy Tech’s student population – and those who have overcome socioeconomic disadvantages. The program supports a pathway for high school students, allowing them to receive a college certificate in pharmaceutical manufacturing or medical device quality.

INVESTMENT PERFORMANCE SUMMARY The Ivy Tech Foundation consolidates all endowed accounts into one fund for investment purposes. The pooled fund, totaling $40.5 million, is managed by JP Morgan Chase.

JPMorgan Chase follows the Foundation’s investment policy, requiring an allocation mix as follows: 45-65% equity securities, 25-45% fixed income securities, and 0-15% alternative assets (e.g., hedge funds, private investments).

The objectives of this allocation mix are to provide a rate of return sufficient to support an annual payout that benefits Ivy Tech students, cover the management fee, and grow each endowment account. The investment policy is reviewed annually by the Foundation’s Finance Committee.

On June 30, 2023, the Foundation’s investments were within the targeted allocation mix, which is depicted in the chart above.

Fiscal Year July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023 was a solid year for investments. Markets recovered in 2023. The U.S. economy has been stronger than expected. Consumers are still spending, the labor market is solid, and corporate margins are stable. The endowed investments generated a rate of return of 10.5% for the year, which brings our average returns to 6.1% for the past ten-year period, as reflected in the Investment Returns chart below.

In conjunction with our investment manager, the Foundation’s Finance Committee regularly assesses investment performance based upon comparison to peers and established benchmarks. Overall, we are pleased with that performance. In our quest to further improve performance, the Foundation continues to implement a strategy of increasing the level of private investments, with the goal of further enhancing returns, while staying within our desired risk profile.
