As a past executive, God has always led me down a path that allowed me to have the privilege of leading countless community grassroots efforts to empower and equip underserved, low-income, African American children and families with much-needed access to health care, educational services, financial resources, and wrap-around services to improve their quality of life. With very diverse and astute skills in grant writing, fundraising, sponsorship, public speaking, advocacy, and networking experience, I have successfully and tirelessly raised millions of dollars and media awareness to those in need. With my final appointment serving as a CEO of a large nonprofit, I have always recognized that I possess an undeniable passion for friend-raising versus fundraising, a dogmatic tenacity to win, a mental stamina to endure, a discernment to make fact-based business decisions, and an inherent drive to understand that failure is never an option. During this time, I discovered that these are the same attributes I wanted to redirect and invest in myself and my personal success as an entrepreneur.

Do not allow others to define or categorize your capabilities.

Investing in my future and working in my God-given talents for the betterment of others are more rewarding than working a career path I studied in school. I can look back and confidently say that I listened to God and sacrificed myself to improve the lives and well-being of hundreds of thousands of people.

You will NEVER SATISFY and please everyone all the time.

As a Black woman in leadership, you MUST resolve within yourself that no matter how much more you excel and outperform your white colleagues (even if you run circles around them), it still will not be enough as you are held to a different standard. As a Black person, it is wise to learn from the mistakes and poor decisions of others as opposed to making those poor decisions on your own; recognize that first impressions are just that; know how to code switch; understand the value in a healthy work- personal life balance; buy something for yourself every paycheck no matter how small or large; not every fight is a war; it's humbling to admit when you are wrong; know how to be still but smart enough to move when it’s time, true failure is when you do not try; and last but not least walk your own path and never look back regretting you didn’t do something.

This is still a challenge for me. I found myself investing more time as a business owner/entreprene ur than I did when I worked for large companies. Wearing multiple hats and holding greater responsibility for your company’s success carry a deeper weight. So, I still drop many balls in a wellrounded life trying to obtain a healthy work/life balance.

I chose to start a family and have children later in life to dig deeper and solidify my career. However, what seemed like a wise decision then to “establish” myself, there were other key factors that I missed. Not in a negative sense but in a way, it had me work even harder.
