Hello and thank you for previewing my architecture portfolio. Within this compilation of design works, you will find projects that tailor to and seek to elevate experiences of different areas of Toronto, my home.

Upon nearly finishing my undergraduate degree in architectural studies, I had come to a realization that I will design spaces for people to inhabit, but I myself have not seen people inhabit many types of spaces. My curiousities brought me abroad to traditional and old cities like Kyoto and to crowded and lively cities like Hong kong. Upon returning to Toronto, I had an overwhelming appreciation and a new perspective on my own city. These connections between public spaces and people are what creates attachments one forms with their own homes. My design work have always focused on the context of its surrounding and considered the engagement people will have with those built designs.

RIVERDALE PLAYSCAPE SITE , BUILDING , TECTONICS M.ARCH STUDIO LOCATION PROJECT TOOLS

FALL 2018 RIVERDALE PARK EAST, TORONTO LOOKOUT RHINO, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR

The steep slopes along Riverdale Park East have always been popular for its view of the city skyline and its incline for kids to play during the winter. The main objective of this project was to create an installation that addressed three points to add to the attraction of this location - accessibility, shelter and play.

Using trees as anchor points in the south-east corner of the park, a series of gentle winding ramps are used to create a continous path for people to get from the top to the bottom of the hill. Several dips in the structure into the terrain allows spontaneous accessible points for those who do not wish to follow the path.

SITE The chosen part of the hillside to situate the structure has a more gentle slope compared to the rest of the park in order to accomodate ramp inclines. The use of ramps will address the accessbility issue for wheelchairs. There is also a wide variety of trees and a cluster of phragmite vegetation set in a wetland depression at this location.

FALL 2018 350 HURON ST. KINDERGARDEN/DAYCARE RHINO, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR, GRASSHOPPER

Located across from the University of Toronto Robarts library, the establishment of this kindergarden provides a space for kindergarden students as well as a daycare service. Primarly, the instution is divided into three spherical areas, two of whihc house main educational classrooms at the ground level and a naturally cultivated garden at the centre below ground.

Parts of the building are open to the public on the weekends while the main classrooms remain closed. Mainly the greenhouse closest to the main streets can be accessed as well as the communal kitchen and library it leads to.

Learning by folding: density of folds, flexibility of facade, transparency of material.

MAKER’S MARKET: UNIT FOLDED, CURVED AND LIGHT M.ARCH STUDIO LOCATION PROJECT TOOLS

Students are to develop a spanning roof structure with columnar support to cover 70-80% of a rectangular area (56’ x 64’). The challenge of this task requires paper to be the only material used, exploring possbilities with different folds and curves in creating one single unit that can aggregate.

Starting with a simple plane-like form, this roof structure is composed of three main components: the main roof column structure, the overhead cover (that has multiple variations as part of the daylighting strategy) and the ‘wings’ on both sides of the column used as the main connective tissue amongst the units.

The structure that is proposed here has a mixture of exterior and interior spaces. The spaces closer to the west are tailored more to the public, as it is closer to the train station exits and the bike path. The interior spaces closer to the east end are more private and are tailored to artists and creative minds.

The figure above shows the circulation space betwen studios and large auditorium. The lightwell columns are incoporated into each room, thus allowing natural light into all areas - this can also be controlled by the opening of the roof.

STRACHAN COMMUNITY STATION ARCHITECTURE STUDIO IV UNDERGRADUATE STUDIO COLLABORATIVE PARTNER LOCATION PROJECT TOOLS

SUMMER 2015 HAKIMEH HOSSEINI STRACHAN AVE. OVERPASS, TORONTO LIBRARY + COMMUNITY CENTRE RHINO, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR

This project focuses on reconnecting Toronto’s habourfront with the surrounding neightborhoods currently seperated by the Strachan Ave. overpass. The premise of this connecting structure is to use a library facility to engage with the residents of the area.

A ‘river in a valley’ is the idea in which this project is formed under, upon analysis and understanding the surrounding elevations and programs within the site. The resulting proposal is to connect physically with the existing railway facility in creating a station that leads to a community centre on ground level.

In order to adjust with the existing site, this project proposes to make use of the railway underneath the overpass by converting it into a station. Ramps leading from the station underneath to the ground level of the community centre will promote engagement between residents of the neightborhoods nearby. Bookshelves and magazine displays line the station wall to encourage people to read while they wait for the train.

The mission of this project seeks to integrate the waterfront community into creating an educational intercampus facility driven by the need to remediate heavy metals within the waterfront area. In phases, the group establishes areas in need of phytoremediation and capping, as well as the a “spine” corridor to create a co-op housing oppurtunity for students and campus facilitiy members, Lastly, an establishment of a transportation hub is inserted to regulate traffic within the area.

ADRIFT MIGRATION WINTERSTATIONS COMPETITION ENTRY LOCATION WATERFRONT PROJECT INSTALLATION TOOLS RHINO, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR, 3DS MAX COLLABORATION JENNIFER BAI

The theme for this winter station is: movement, impermanence, and scattering or gathering .

The main unit of arrangement are a number of triangular posts. These posts frame the centre of the station, acting as a funnel from one side to the other - expressing the sometimes constricting and uncontrollable currents that carry you along the journey. A scattered arrangement of the posts in different shapes gather towards the centre and even unite. Like a wave, these elements have been brought together in different arangements but become dispersed as it recedes.

NOIZ SONY BRIDGE TERMINAL INTERNSHIP

SONY CITY OSAKI, TOKYO INTERIOR DESIGN COMPLETED AUGUST 2016 MODEL MAKING

The 24th floor of the SONY Osaki building was to be resdesigned as a community space that promotes innovative thinking and communication with one another. The transformative and connective effect if various cusotmized furniture, as well as the creation of a Makers Room for digital fabrication and experimentation is meant to inspire and encourage employees.

Main tasks for this project included modelling the custom furniture and ceiling options at a 1:30 scale and reproducing them as changes are made.

NOIZ “I THOUGHT OF YOU”: PENG WEI INTERNSHIP LOCATION PROJECT DATE TOOLS

SUZHOU MUSEUM, CHINA EXHIBITION INSTALLATION OPEN MARCH 2017 MODEL MAKING, PHOTOSHOP

A collaborative project with artist Peng Wei to display his most recent works at the Suzhou Museum. This installation is divided into three parts - the garden, the journey and the temple to best showcase the artist’s works.

Responsibilities involved modelling the north-eastern wing of the museum to understand the space and the lighting for the installation.

Naoko Tosa is a renown artist that uses slow-motion capturing techniques to create artwork with various mediums such as paint, flowers, and small trinkets.

Participation in the production of several art-pieces as a part-time worker while at the University of Kyoto, some main tasks included configuring the high-speed camera station and mixing paint mediums for experimentation.

Contributed to a proposal for the Nishiki Market night projection event before leaving position.
