mpowering teen mothers
I use my passion for social justice advocacy to contribute towards healing a chronic wound in my community, teen pregnancy. I draw my motivation from my late mother's MA Thesis on "Teen pregnancies and HIV cases in high schools." This academic paper remains fueled by my desire to be an active changemaker in my community. Mirroring my childhood and the current realities of children raising children sickens me. I can no longer be silent, for the silent cry of the young girls is deafening as their role as a child in society is stripped off by early motherhood.
The question remains, can the cry of these teenagers be turned into smiles? I use my twenty-five-year roller coaster journey, consisting of pits, plateaus, and peaks, to inspire hope, resilience, and confidence in these teen mothers in Kenya and Africa. At the same time, I remind them of their power to redefine their path to success despite the hiccup they face. I am excited about the opportunity to develop Gingko Africa, which will continue to empower and inspire future generations.
I aim to ensure that the girls and young women in the program don't need Gingko anymore. When they don't, that means Gingko has achieved its purpose. As I embark on the remainder of Gingko's journey towards sustainability, creating amazing experiences and learning opportunities, A Luta Continua!

Socio-economic empowerment of teen mothers
March 2022 - August 2022
The state of financial instability, high unemployment rates, and living below a dollar a day, puts the teenage girls in a dilemma of either fending for themselves or going back to school. For girls who are to be concentrating in school, their biggest worry is to find a job. Poverty levels occasioned by the harsh economic times brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic means that a family can only afford one meal a day. Not in any way is this enough to feed the teen mother, the family members and the baby.
During this second phase, Gingko focuses on of young mothers aged 15-20 through a programme that educates them on basic and development. The expected outcomes included:
capacity strengthening entrepreneurial skills, personal cultivationwell-being
financial instability
To minimise the cases of by equipping and enabling 30 teen mothers with necessary entrepreneurial and business basic skills to generate monthly income.

After giving birth, I went back to high school. I’m currently in my final year. I am juggling between school, laying a foundation for a better future, participating in empowerment programmes to better myself and doing small businesses to raise money to support my child single-handedly as the father of my child neglected us. This experience had made me more resilient, courageous and hopeful for a better tomorrow.“ Redemtah (19).

A letter from me to you
Going through the peaks, pits, and plateau, in this journey has been a matter of discovering myself. I can attest the journey has been like diving into the deep waters and learning to swim.
Over these 3 years, I have conquered the challenges, continuously reinvented, and redefined myself: unlearning to learn and failing to succeed while embracing mistakes. In between, all the wealth of knowledge and capabilities I have developed have enabled my projects to succeed and prepared me for the next phase of my life.
This experience has shown and given me the ability to stand up, be involved in the creation of a better world, nourish more than one skill, and participate in important discussions that shape the future.
To claim my spaces at the table in this crazy world, I would love to discover my place within your walls, to know where I can be most useful; to implement the knowledge and skills while unlearning to learn once again.
I close this chapter but begin a journey where I carry the spirit of a river; that impulses through challenges but still leaves an indelible mark that it passed there!
