YOUNG TALENT ON BOARD Our Youth Network is designed to further educate and empower young music creators. Including a place at the top table on our Board.

We believe it’s vital to allow the voice of the next generation of talent to be heard throughout our industry. That’s why we’ve launched our Youth Network, to build partnerships with academic institutions to further educate and empower young creators.

Created alongside the Youth Network, our Youth Council will give Under 25 songwriters and composers from across the UK a forum to share their ideas and concerns, with one Youth Council member taking on a full Board Director role at The Ivors Academy.

This year’s nominations see one of the most dynamic displays of contemporary composition in recent years. It is a great honour to be able to recognise and celebrate the works and the extraordinary creators behind them this evening.

The Awards were established in 2003 to shine a light and raise the profile of exceptional creative talent across the country, and 17 years on I am delighted to say they are continuing to do just that, and more.

The evolution of the Awards, particularly as part of the journey to unite them with The Ivors earlier in the year, has inspired and enriched new audiences whilst championing those at the heart of our vibrant music community.

The UK has an amazing array of composing talent and it is wonderful to recognise and celebrate their achievements today with representatives from across the industry – publishers, performers, commissioners, broadcasters and sponsors. Our gratitude goes to everyone that has supported the awards – the entrants, the judges and sponsors – you help creativity in music to flourish.

The Ivors Academy has represented the interests of composers and songwriters of all genres for 75 years. As a community of creators, we do the vital work of campaigning, celebrating and cultivating the art and craft of composition and songwriting. We are building a community of music creators that can take action to ensure those who write music are properly recognized and remunerated for their work.

Over the past hundred years the classical sector has evolved more than anyone could have ever imagined. While the classical community faces unique challenges, the vitality and art of composition remains constant, retaining its ability to truly move listeners and affect emotion, whether through live performance or through innovative technology, bringing music to audiences in new ways.

At PRS for Music, we are proud to champion classical music creators and over the past few years we have developed a portfolio of initiatives to support composers across the UK including workshops, showcases and commissioning opportunities with organisations such as Cheltenham Music Festival, New Music Scotland, The Riot Ensemble, Tš Cerdd and Wild Plum Arts.

We are once again delighted to support The Ivors Composer Awards which celebrate the talented composers who create music that continues to inspire us all. Welcome to the first year of The Ivors Composer Awards – a brand new feel to some of the most prestigious new music awards anywhere in the world. This celebration is an important date for anyone who loves new music and at BBC Radio 3 we are honoured to bring the thriving scene to millions of people at home and on BBC Sounds. You can catch highlights of the programme on BBC Radio 3’s New Music show on 8 th December, 9pm.

New Music is close to my heart and is at the centre of what BBC Radio 3 does and what The Third Programme did when it started. To that end, we’re constantly appraising how we can best present new music to our millions of listeners. This autumn we launched a new schedule that bolsters the network’s commitment to experimental and contemporary music, ensuring all the programmes work together to allow audiences to discover new work, and to support the artists that make it. We’re really pleased to be able to connect so many people to the richness of contemporary music that you see in the shortlist in the inaugural Ivors. We all have a duty to cherish and encourage new talent, BBC Radio 3 lives this premise, which is why our work with The Ivors Composer Awards is one of the highlights of our year.

Performance Exequy John Joubert

Exequy was commissioned as a memorial tribute to the composer John McCabe for the 2016 William Alwyn Festival. It is based on the Kontakion melody (the traditional Russian chant for the dead) and on material derived from the six letters of John McCabe’s name that can be expressed in musical notation, viz. H(=Bª) CCAB(=Bb) E.

John Joubert (1927 – 2019) John Joubert was born in Cape Town in 1927. Aged 19 he won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London and lived and worked in England ever since. Joubert’s long composing career encompassed all genres from symphonic, operatic and chamber works to ever-popular choral miniatures, Torches and There is no rose. The two symphonies, three string quartets, Oboe Concerto and Cello Concerto are recent additions to a growing catalogue of recordings from across his work list. 2016 saw two major premieres: Joubert’s substantial St Mark Passion at Wells Cathedral and his opera Jane Eyre – recorded live for Somm as one of several new releases to mark his 90 th birthday in 2017.

Where did you hear Anna Meredith’s music first? It might have been at the BBC Proms, where her music has been played several times, including commissions for both the First (Five Telegrams, 2018) and Last Nights (froms, 2008). It might have been in the cinema, where her string quartet Songs for the M8 (2005) was used in the soundtrack to the 2018 Oscar-winning film The Favourite, or on TV, where her music is used in the recent Netflix series Living With Yourself. It might have been in a club, or at a summer rock festival, performing tracks from her two highly acclaimed dance-pop albums, Varmints (2016) and Fibs (2019). It might even have been in a lift – specifically, the lifts at the Arndale shopping centre in Manchester, for which she created a sound installation for the 2017 Manchester International Festival.

For all the new music talk of crossover, few composers inhabit multiple musical worlds as naturally as Meredith. Born in 1978, she studied at York University and then the Royal College of Music, where she became a junior fellow in 2003. She came to national prominence with froms, her first Proms commission. That piece involved a live satellite link between five simultaneous orchestras, and ever since Meredith has stretched musical convention: not in an aggressive, avant-garde fashion, but more to ask whether we could do something different, something more, please? For her PRS New Music 20x12 Commission for the National Youth Orchestra HandsFree she dispensed with instruments altogether, creating instead an 80-piece body percussion symphony. Even her band is off-kilter, an uncannily funky quartet of drums, cello, keyboard and tuba. (Tuba bass drops? Yes.) Meredith has been Composer in Residence with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra, a mentor to drum and bass artist Goldie (for the BBC TV show Classic Goldie), and winner of the Pitchfork Best New Music award (for Varmints). She was made an MBE in 2019.

The Ivors Composer Awards 2019

In the 1970s and 80s, Erika Fox and her music were familiar presences on concert stages in London and around the UK. Her list of performances and musical associations reads like a who’s who of the scene at that time: the Fires of London, Jane Manning (a frequent singer of her music), the Nash Ensemble, Lontano, Dartington, Almeida … the list goes on. She won the Finzi Award (in 1983, for Kaleidoscope) and was nominated in 1991 for an Olivier Award (for the chamber opera The Dancer Hotoke). And then – in the mid-1990s, abruptly – she faded from view. She hadn’t stopped composing, but the times around her had changed. Fox no longer fit.

She was born in Vienna in 1936, into a Hasidic family of Hungarian/Romanian origin.

Although she came to the UK as a war refugee at the age of two, her childhood was suffused with East European folk music, religious chant, ritual and dance. All of them fed into her compositional style, in particular her love of long, modal melodies, and her use of theatrical stage directions. It is little surprise that after her studies at the Royal College of Music she sought further lessons with Sir Harrison Birtwistle, although her music possesses a non-Western, spiritual intensity of its own.

Fox’s twenty-first-century re-emergence is thanks in large part to the enthusiams of the clarinettist and journalist Kate Romano, themselves sparked by a conversation with the composer Nicola LeFanu. Until recently only obscurely recalled by those who had been there, Fox’s music – appearing now with a restless, fluid modernity – can today be heard online and on her first portrait CD (at the age of 82), released this year on NMC. Hers is a lifetime achievement carried in the memory of an older generation and, finally, fitted to the present day.
