The Ivor Novello Awards

Named in honour of Ivor Novello, Britain’s most successful and distinguished theatrical composer at the time, the aim of the awards was to shine a spotlight on the excellence of British and Irish songwriters and composers in an age when international music dominated the British airwaves.

To be eligible for the nominated award categories, works must have a British or Irish writing contribution of at least one third, according to the works registration. A Gift of the Academy award recognises a sustained contribution to UK music.

Music creators nominated to receive an Ivor Novello Award in a judged category are chosen by panels of songwriters and composers, representing true peer recognition. The nominations for PRS for Music Most Performed Work credit songs having received the most broadcast, online and general performances in the award year. The Ivors Committee, formed entirely of songwriters and composers, decide the identity of those celebrated for their contribution to music.

The first award ceremony took place on 11 March 1956 at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. The statuette, a representation of Euterpe (the Greek muse of music and lyric poetry), was designed

by Hazel Underwood and to this day, is still cast in solid bronze and hand finished. For over 60 years statuettes have been presented to songwriters, composers and their music publishers in recognition of the excellence of their compositions.

The Ivors Jazz Award Django Bates

The Ivors Jazz Award is like a glorious British summer: it doesn’t come along very often but, when it does, it’s always truly memorable.

Bates made his name as a member of Loose Tubes, the collective that gave British jazz a new lease of life in the 1980s. Anarchic and unpredictable, the band turned the domestic scene upside down, and Bates was bang in the middle of it, kick-starting a career that has never failed to keep people guessing.

His versatility means that he is an expert across the jazz sub-genre spectrum. He’s played in trios, quartets, Bill Bruford’s Earthworks and many other combos, and held numerous academic posts, while his own compositions have covered a staggering range of material.

His commissions have included percussionist Evelyn Glennie’s My Dream Kitchen, What’s It Like To Be Alive with pianist Joanna MacGregor and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and his own electric keyboard concerto, 2000 Years Beyond UNDO. He has never been afraid of applying his challenging approach to more mainstream tastes: his tributes to Charlie Parker and The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band dazzled, while he has worked on music for theatre productions of everything from As You Like It to The Postman Always Rings Twice and, in his role as artistic director of the FuseLeeds festival, gave Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood his first orchestral commission.

“I always felt I would always pursue my own music utterly on my own terms,” he once said and, as always, he’s been true to his word. And that’s why this rare breed of composer is truly deserving of this rarest of accolades.

It takes a special kind of talent to take six years out and then slip back into the music scene as if she’s never been away.

Ever since she emerged via her early collaborations with dance behemoths Faithless, Dido’s voice and songs have plugged her directly into global music collections. Once she went solo, she became unstoppable: her 1999 No Angel and 2003 Life For Rent albums remain two of the biggest-selling records of all time in the UK, music that both perfectly articulated day-to-day life for millions and soundtracked it too.

Take a song like Thank You. It first appeared in a key moment in Gwyneth Paltrow movie Sliding Doors, appeared on No Angel and then was sampled for Eminem’s classic stalker tale, Stan, throwing Dido into an unlikely starring role on the rap-rock collision Anger Management tour, with the song becoming an even bigger hit in the process.

Not many songs enjoy such a life — it still regularly makes the top UK airplay songs of the year — but Dido has a whole host of such anthems in her collection. From Here With Me and White Flag to Life For Rent, Don’t Leave Home, No Freedom and Hurricanes, Dido has never rushed her art, but it never fails to hit the target.

Her current album, Still on My Mind — created with her brother Rollo in a similar style to her early work — has her right back in the limelight. If James Brown was the Godfather of Soul, then Richard Kylea Cowie Jr — better known as Wiley — is surely the Godfather of Grime.

Wiley started out as a member of grime crew Pay As U Go and also served in Roll Deep, but it’s his solo work that really sealed his reputation as a pioneer.

From his early Eskibeat instrumental work through his hard-hitting debut Treddin’ On Thin Ice and follow-up Da 2nd Phaze, Wiley set a blistering pace. But despite his impeccable underground credentials, he also pushed the genre on commercially, scoring one of the scene’s earliest smash hits with Wearing My Rolex.

Wiley was unhappy with that direction — although he later scored an even bigger chart hit with his No.1 Heatwave — and took control of his own recording career soon after, unleashing album after album that both stayed true to grime’s roots while expanding its horizons. Like many true originals, he had to wait for his rewards, but in recent years the accolades have come as quickly as his lyrical flow.

His 2017 album Godfather — featuring top drawer collaborators such as Ghetts and Lethal Bizzle and classic tracks such as Can’t Go Wrong, Bring Them All/Holy Grime and U Were Always, Pt 2 — became his first to crack the Top 10. The NME awarded him the Outstanding Contribution To Music award and he was made an MBE in the 2018 New Year Honours List.

Despite all that, however, Wiley himself remains the same reassuringly unpredictable personality and pioneering songwriter he always was. And that’s why his influence will echo for generations to come.

Indeed, for a band named after a year now over four decades in the past, The 1975’s A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships is the most thrillingly modern, zeitgeiststraddling record in a long time. Which makes the band’s songwriting team — drummer George Daniel, guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald and, of course, frontman Matthew Healy — the perfect winners of the prestigious Songwriters Of The Year gong.

They’re the first band to win since The Feeling in 2007, but then, at a time when we’re told bands and guitars are going out of fashion, The 1975 have bucked every trend going to capture the imagination of a generation.

A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships is a hugely successful album — it shot straight to No.1 in the UK, and went Top 5 in the US. But it’s much more than that; destined to become a generational touchstone, it had critics comparing it to Radiohead’s OK Computer and had The Ivors Committee reaching for the superlatives.

“All at once daring, vulnerable and recklessly honest, The 1975’s songwriting on A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships stands out as a vivid picture of modernity,” said one. Another hailed the songs as “a quintessential snapshot of the emotional complexities of life in the here and now, but with all the hallmarks of a body of work that will stand the test of time”.

And, as anyone who’s attended one of their remarkable — and ever bigger — live shows will know, The 1975’s songs run the gamut of emotions. Indeed, for a band named after a year now over four decades in the past, The 1975’s A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships is the most thrillingly modern, zeitgeiststraddling record in a long time. Which makes the band’s songwriting team — drummer George Daniel, guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald and, of course, frontman Matthew Healy — the perfect winners of the prestigious Songwriters Of The Year gong.

They’re the first band to win since The Feeling in 2007, but then, at a time when we’re told bands and guitars are going out of fashion, The 1975 have bucked every trend going to capture the imagination of a generation.

A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships is a hugely successful album — it shot straight to No.1 in the UK, and went Top 5 in the US. But it’s much more than that; destined to become a generational touchstone, it had critics comparing it to Radiohead’s OK Computer and had The Ivors Committee reaching for the superlatives.

“All at once daring, vulnerable and recklessly honest, The 1975’s songwriting on A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships stands out as a vivid picture of modernity,” said one. Another hailed the songs as “a quintessential snapshot of the emotional complexities of life in the here and now, but with all the hallmarks of a body of work that will stand the test of time”.

International Achievement Deep Purple

If Deep Purple had done nothing else, Smoke On The Water — still the first riff any budding guitarist learns upon picking up the instrument — would have secured their place in rock history. But the Mark II incarnation of the band — which comprised singer Ian Gillan, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice and late, great keyboard player Jon Lord (who sadly passed away in 2012) — did much, much more than that.

Shrugging off the psychedelic and orchestral trappings of Deep Purple Mark I, the band forged something much heavier and their 1970 In Rock became a stone cold classic, home to such ubiquitous rock anthems as Speed King and Child In Time.

The band had already been popular in America, but In Rock made them gigantic around the world and hugely influential on the emerging louder school of rock. Not that Deep Purple had too much time to think about that: during their early ‘70s, um, purple patch, they also released the barnstorming Fireball, Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are albums, while the Made In Japan recording showcased their truly global popularity and became one of the biggest-selling live albums in history.

Deep Purple Mark II sadly went their separate ways in 1973, although they have reformed several times since, and Gillan, Glover and Paice remain members of the band today. Whatever the line-up, the band remains hugely popular all around the world, over 50 years after they first formed. But, however much time passes, you can bet those Deep Purple Mark II riffs and songs will stay with us.

Because Ashcroft is not just a brilliant frontman, but also one of the greatest songwriters in the world.

Ashcroft is no stranger to The Ivors, having won Songwriter of the Year in 1998 for The Verve’s Urban Hymns album — from whence Bitter Sweet Symphony and many other classics came. But this award is due recognition for a 30-year songwriting career that has both pushed sonic envelopes and caused almighty singalongs.

Because, while Ashcroft’s early work with The Verve — all starry-eyed passion and neo-psychedelic charm — was out-there enough to earn him the music press nickname “Mad Richard”, he always had the ambition for his songs to reach millions.

That happened big time with Urban Hymns, which went on to become one of the biggest-selling albums in UK chart history. But it’s since he launched his solo career with the Top 3 hit A Song For The Lovers in 2000, that he’s really been able to show his breadth as a writer.

From debut solo album Alone With Everybody through 2002’s Human Conditions, 2006’s Keys To The World, 2010’s United Nations Of Sound project, 2016’s These People and last year’s smash hit return Natural Rebel — which saw him back freaking out BBC Breakfast viewers where he belongs — Ashcroft has the uncommon knack of creating songs that could only have come from his unique brain, but that still connect with anyone who listens. From The Drugs Don’t Work to New York, Break The Night With Colour or Surprised By The Joy, he has been — as one early Verve classic put it — living for history. And this award acknowledges that history is exactly what he’s made. Just ask Chris Martin.
