On behalf of BASCA, it’s my great pleasure to welcome you all to the 2018 Ivor Novello Awards. As we gather for the 63rd year to celebrate British and Irish songwriters and composers, we’ve ample evidence the world’s love affair with their writing is far from over. The figures alone prove it – each year, a British artist sells around one in six albums worldwide. But beyond the statistics, there’s an unquantifiable magic to our music that has fans from across the globe flocking to various landmarks to capture a piece of it – from the 100 Club to Penny Lane or Quadrophenia Alley.

This year marks some of our most important campaigning yet – as we fight for legislation that will protect future generations of writers. From Lionel Bart via Lennon & McCartney, Elton John, Kate Bush, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Annie Lennox, David Arnold, Radiohead, Guy Chambers, Amy Winehouse to Skepta – the list of previous Ivor winners makes a Who’s Who of composition genius. Who will win in 2018? It is always such an exciting day – and my huge thanks to the BASCA staff, in particular Fran Matthews and Cindy Truong who organise The Ivors with such aplomb. And please do remember the organisation behind the glitz. BASCA is needed now more than ever – the music industry is slowly starting to turn the corner from the ravages of illegal downloading but it is painfully slow, and songwriters and composers are not yet getting their fair share of the deals. However not only do we fight to protect copyright we organise many training events, workshops and conferences each year, arrange pro bono legal advice, negotiate dozens of useful discounts for equipment, studio services and software, host networking events across the UK and work with the best Universities and Conservatoires in order to encourage the next generation of writers. Ivor Novello Awards The Ivor Novello Awards [The Ivors] were created by BASCA in 1956. Named in honour of Ivor Novello, Britain’s most successful and distinguished theatrical composer at the time, the aim of the awards was to shine a spotlight on the excellence of British and Irish songwriters and composers in an age when international music dominated the British airwaves. To be eligible for the nominated award categories, works must have a British or Irish writing contribution of at least one third, according to the works registration. The ‘Gift of BASCA’ awards recognise a sustained contribution to British music. Presented by the writing community, with no outside influence, The Ivors truly represent peer recognition. Each nominated category, with the exception of PRS for Music Most Performed Work, is judged by a separate, autonomous panel of writers. The Ivors Committee, similarly formed of songwriters and composers, then decide the identity of those celebrated for their contribution to music. The first award ceremony took place on 11 March 1956 at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. The statuette, a representation of Euterpe (the Greek Muse of music and lyric poetry), was designed by Hazel Underwood and to this day, is still cast in solid bronze. For over 60 years statuettes have been presented to songwriters, composers and their music publishers in recognition of the excellence of their compositions. The Ivors Classical Music Award This year’s Ivor Novello Award recipients list is not exactly short on high achievers. But, even against such contenders, if there were to be an award for productivity, innovation and versatility, pioneering composer Thea Musgrave would surely be in a field of her own. Born in Scotland and trained at the Conservatoire in Paris, her music career has proved breath-taking in its scope and devastating in its impact on every sector of the classical world. Her work has been performed around the world, often with her conducting her own productions (including the 1977 premiere of her Mary, Queen of Scots opera at the Edinburgh International Festival). She has enjoyed both academic acknowledgement (two Guggenheim Fellowships, multiple honorary degrees) and achievement (with Professor roles at prestigious colleges such as Queens College at the City University of New York and the University of California, Santa Barbara), huge critical acclaim and public devotion. And, most importantly, she has composed landmark works in choral music, symphonic music, chamber music and opera. Whatever field she works in, Musgrave’s work is always characterised by her dramatic sensibilities and some serious musical muscle. Not for nothing did the BBC stage a special presentation of her music, entitled Total Immersion: Thea Musgrave, at the Barbican in 2014. Three concerts in a single day, encompassing her chamber, choral and symphonic works, showed that she has range to die for. Perhaps because of her mastery of these multiple areas, Musgrave’s work often crosses barriers and always has a dramatic effect, with instruments often placed in different locations in order to enhance their impact. Musgrave’s own work has taken her to many different locations over her incredible career. Indeed, she has resided in the US since 1972. But today she comes home to the UK to pick up a well-earned Ivor and to give us all the chance to salute a unique and indefatigable classical talent.

PRS for Music Outstanding Contribution to British Music “Mixing pop and politics, he asks me what the use is,” sang Billy Bragg on his brilliant 1988 hit Waiting for The Great Leap Forward, “I offer him embarrassment and my usual excuses.” It’s the sort of couplet that could only have come from the great bard of Barking, Billy Bragg, a man whose songs have expertly skewered both pop and politics like no one else over the last 30 years. Bragg’s wit was at its most self-deprecating on that song, but, in fact, his contribution to both British music and British life in general has been the very definition of ‘outstanding’ ever since he emerged as a self-styled “one-man Clash” in the mid-80s. Over that time, his songwriting has grown increasingly sophisticated and versatile, as he’s taken on everything from full-on chart hits (Sexuality, A New England) to obscure Americana (the Mermaid Avenue and Shine A Light albums). But the core of his writing has always been simple, direct and distinctly English, getting to the heart of the matter and, often, to matters of the heart. PRS for Music Outstanding Contribution to British Music “Mixing pop and politics, he asks me what the use is,” sang Billy Bragg on his brilliant 1988 hit Waiting for The Great Leap Forward, “I offer him embarrassment and my usual excuses.” It’s the sort of couplet that could only have come from the great bard of Barking, Billy Bragg, a man whose songs have expertly skewered both pop and politics like no one else over the last 30 years. Bragg’s wit was at its most self-deprecating on that song, but, in fact, his contribution to both British music and British life in general has been the very definition of ‘outstanding’ ever since he emerged as a self-styled “one-man Clash” in the mid-80s. Over that time, his songwriting has grown increasingly sophisticated and versatile, as he’s taken on everything from full-on chart hits (Sexuality, A New England) to obscure Americana (the Mermaid Avenue and Shine A Light albums). But the core of his writing has always been simple, direct and distinctly English, getting to the heart of the matter and, often, to matters of the heart. Indeed, in an increasingly ephemeral business, Sheeran’s ability to craft songs for the ages – the tunes you’ll be hearing at weddings and funerals long after everyone’s forgotten Shape of You and Castle On The Hill’s staggering firstweek streaming numbers – is what marks him apart from pretty much every other young songwriter on the planet. Sheeran’s unique feat of landing every single track from ÷ in the Top 20 may have, ultimately, been down to streaming and a quirk in the chart system. The Ivors Inspiration Award It’s one thing to inspire the artists that follow you onto the world stage. Shane MacGowan has done plenty of that; you can trace the lineage of his brilliantly bleary-eyed songwriting everywhere from the Dropkick Murphys’ punk rock blasts to The Libertines’ gutter-dwelling, stargazing romance. But MacGowan – a unique musical force in all sorts of ways – is unusual in that his poetic work also influenced his peers, and even some iconic stars whose careers preceded his. Not for nothing did Joe Strummer once call him “one of the best writers of the century”. Nor Elvis Costello, who produced The Pogues’ 1985 classic Rum, Sodomy & The Lash or Tom Waits, who once declared: “Shane has the gift. I believe him. He knows how to tell a story.” And, thankfully, MacGowan has been more than happy to tell those stories and share that gift over the years. Ever since MacGowan emerged from the punk scene (his band The Nipple Erectors were a stalwart support act during punk’s first wave), the raw reality of his work has been obvious to anyone who heard it, whether the songs date from his time with The Pogues or his solo career. This, after all, is the man who brought bittersweet authenticity into the cheesy world of the Christmas song, with the most-cherished festive single of all time, Fairytale Of New York. A man who can do wild-eyed party songs (Fiesta, Sally MacLennane) or sad-eyed, wistful ballads (A Rainy Night In Soho, A Pair Of Brown Eyes) with equal effectiveness. And a man who deserves to be hailed for much more than his well-documented love of a drink. Today’s well-deserved Ivor should help with that. But all you really need to be inspired by Shane MacGowan is access to his incredible catalogue. Just ask Tom Waits.

PRS for Music Special International Award There are stars. There are superstars. But – hello! – if it’s an all-time great you’re looking for, then Lionel Richie certainly fits the bill. Richie has been at the top pretty much since he joined The Commodores in 1968, but took things to a whole new level when he launched his solo career in 1982. He’s won five Grammys, an Oscar and received the Songwriters Hall Of Fame’s highest honour, the Johnny Mercer Award. And he’s sold over 90 million records around the world. Richie is incredibly popular pretty much everywhere (he’s a genuine phenomenon across the Arab world, for example) but a significant chunk of those 90 million sales have been in the UK (he’s had no fewer than six Top 10 studio albums here), a country that has always held him in great affection. And the feeling seems to be mutual; when he relaunched his solo career in 2015, he chose to do it at Glastonbury Festival. The resulting gig has entered the annals of Worthy Farm history, with even Richie himself – a man who, let’s face it, has probably seen most things during his stellar career – moved to remark, “There’s people here that know these songs better than I do”. Then again, the Lionel Richie song collection is pretty memorable. This is a man who has mastered everything from lovelorn ballad (Endless Love, Truly) to tasteful soul (All Night Long (All Night)) to full-on party tunes (Dancing On The Ceiling). His UK chart record is particularly remarkable: that Glastonbury performance sent his Lionel Richie & The Commodores: The Definitive Collection soaring to the top of the album charts, while Hello spent six weeks at No.1 here back in 1984. And, 50 years after we first said hello to Lionel Richie, no one’s ready to say goodbye just yet.

PRS for Music Special International Award There are stars. There are superstars. But – hello! – if it’s an all-time great you’re looking for, then Lionel Richie certainly fits the bill. Richie has been at the top pretty much since he joined The Commodores in 1968, but took things to a whole new level when he launched his solo career in 1982. He’s won five Grammys, an Oscar and received the Songwriters Hall Of Fame’s highest honour, the Johnny Mercer Award. And he’s sold over 90 million records around the world. Richie is incredibly popular pretty much everywhere (he’s a genuine phenomenon across the Arab world, for example) but a significant chunk of those 90 million sales have been in the UK (he’s had no fewer than six Top 10 studio albums here), a country that has always held him in great affection. And the feeling seems to be mutual; when he relaunched his solo career in 2015, he chose to do it at Glastonbury Festival. The resulting gig has entered the annals of Worthy Farm history, with even Richie himself – a man who, let’s face it, has probably seen most things during his stellar career – moved to remark, “There’s people here that know these songs better than I do”. Then again, the Lionel Richie song collection is pretty memorable. This is a man who has mastered everything from lovelorn ballad (Endless Love, Truly) to tasteful soul (All Night Long (All Night)) to full-on party tunes (Dancing On The Ceiling). His UK chart record is particularly remarkable: that Glastonbury performance sent his Lionel Richie & The Commodores: The Definitive Collection soaring to the top of the album charts, while Hello spent six weeks at No.1 here back in 1984. And, 50 years after we first said hello to Lionel Richie, no one’s ready to say goodbye just yet.
