British Music is the envy of the world, and the future of its industry is, at last, looking brighter. However, without us, the composers, there would be silence, or worse… jamming. We are the architects upon whose designs all music is built. BASCA speaks with a united voice for composers of all genres, to protect and celebrate the value of our creations and our Rights. We are the cause and music is the effect. Join us, the future of music is ours to write. Huge thanks to all the staff at BASCA, especially Fran Matthews and Cindy Truong, who have made this event so special. Thanks also to the judging committees for their time, skill and taste. The Ivors Jazz Award The Ivors Jazz Award is so special it’s only ever been handed out once before (in 2012, to legendary pianist/composer Stan Tracey). So there can be no doubt that John Surman is an utterly worthy recipient. Surman’s remarkable career has shaped the genre in the UK in a way that few others have even come close to. He began his career in the mid-‘60s as a saxophonist and clarinet player and a brilliant one too, but it’s for his jazz compositions that BASCA are honouring him today. And Surman’s writing covers a much wider range than you would generally expect in any one genre. After all, Surman is the man behind everything from Proverbs & Songs – composed for saxophones, pipe organ and the Salisbury Festival Chorus and so startling a piece of work it was nominated for the Mercury Prize – to choral pieces such as Songs For A Coastal Wind and Lifelines. His work always remains respectful of the jazz tradition, but pulls in influences from everywhere from classical music to folk as he puts his individual stamp on everything he turns his hand to. No wonder The Guardian praised him for helping “European jazz to evolve in ways it now takes for granted” while The Times simply dubbed him “perhaps the most gifted British jazzman of this generation”. He continues to push at boundaries today – recent releases such as Saltash Bells and The Spaces In Between have been amongst the most well-received of his career. Who knows when The Ivors Jazz Award will come along next but, until it does, the genre is in very safe hands…

The Ivors Jazz Award The Ivors Jazz Award is so special it’s only ever been handed out once before (in 2012, to legendary pianist/composer Stan Tracey). So there can be no doubt that John Surman is an utterly worthy recipient. Surman’s remarkable career has shaped the genre in the UK in a way that few others have even come close to. He began his career in the mid-‘60s as a saxophonist and clarinet player and a brilliant one too, but it’s for his jazz compositions that BASCA are honouring him today. And Surman’s writing covers a much wider range than you would generally expect in any one genre. Yet she has been equally prolific on the classical side of things, becoming the BBC Concert Orchestra’s Composer In Association in 2002. She has worked on projects that range from eclectic (a pantomime version of Cinderella in collaboration with Stephen Fry and Kevin Spacey) to electric (she was the musical director of the BBC Electric Proms’ 30th anniversary take on Saturday Night Fever). Even against such a CV, her film scores stand out. Outstanding Song Collection Do you remember the first time you heard a Pulp song? Such is the idiosyncratic genius at work within their finest tunes, that most listeners can recall that exact moment, whichever era of this most treasured of bands is involved. The band started in Sheffield as far back as 1978, but in contrast to some of today’s firework-style careers, it took them a while – and several false starts – to get going. By the late ‘80s, however, the band had a settled line-up, with keyboard player Candida Doyle, drummer Nick Banks, bassist Steve Mackey and guitarist Russell Senior alongside frontman Jarvis Cocker. Another guitarist, Mark Webber, arrived in 1995, completing the line-up that saw the band become one of the most successful of the Britpop era. Pulp had written great songs before that period – My Legendary Girlfriend, I Want You – but from 1994’s His’N’Hers album until the band’s split in 2001, they penned classic after classic, ensuring a legacy that would last long after Camden’s Britpoptastic Good Mixer pub ceased to be a tourist attraction. Many of those songs – Lipgloss, Babies, Common People, Something Changed, Disco 2000, Help The Aged, A Little Soul, Bad Cover Version and yes, Do You Remember The First Time? – became huge hits. But there was always much more to Pulp than melody; they provided a musical edge and a lyrical window on a seedy subterranean underbelly that you just didn’t get with other chart stars. That’s why their 2011 reunion was so rapturously received and why fans still long to see them back amongst us. It’s also why this prestigious Ivor is so richly deserved. And why, in the unlikely event this is the first time anyone is hearing their songwriting skills, they’ll probably never forget it.

High end travel seemed a long way off when Welch emerged as a South London indie rocker at the tail-end of the Noughties, but via three hit albums – 2009’s Lungs, 2011’s Ceremonials and 2015’s How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful – and some glorious songs, she has transformed herself into one of the world’s biggest stars. So, as well as headlining Glastonbury Festival and winning BRIT Awards, she has also performed at the Oscars and been nominated for multiple Grammys, thanks to her trademark powerhouse vocals and ethereal writing style. You can trace the latter from the ragged punk glory of Kiss With A Fist through the tumultuous Dog Days Are Over and Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) to the epic Shake It Out and Spectrum (Say My Name), all evidence of Welch’s increasing songwriting sophistication. But it was How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful – home to emotional anthems such as What Kind Of Man, Ship To Wreck and Delilah – that really cemented her as a global star. The Ivors Inspiration Award They say that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. With Gary Numan – a man who has always exuded an ice cold, sweat-free on-stage persona – it is surely the other way round. Which is not to say he hasn’t worked hard – any career that’s lasted as long as his has necessarily involves a strong element of graft. But it’s his status as a true pioneer of electronic music that means his songs are as relevant today as they were back in the late ‘70s. It was then, as frontman of post-punkers Tubeway Army, that Numan saw the potential of the new-fangled synthesisers that were popping up in Argos catalogues and garages at the time. He consequently took his music down a dark electronic path that still resonates with rockers and electronic artists alike nearly 40 years later. So everyone from Dave Grohl to Marilyn Manson to Sugababes to Basement Jaxx to Trent Reznor to Armand van Helden has covered or sampled his songs and/or acknowledged his influence on their own careers. It’s not hard to see why, either. Even today, early songs such as Down In The Park, Are ‘Friends’ Electric?, Cars, We Are Glass and She’s Got Claws sound both spookily prescient and curiously contemporary. And while Numan spent a few years away from the hit parade frontline, albums such as 1983’s Warriors, 1989’s Automatic (a pop-soul-orientated collaboration with Shakatak’s Bill Sharpe) and 1997’s Exile regularly showed off his talents for multi-faceted reinvention. Meanwhile, 2017 fast sees him approaching national treasure status. His latest album, 2013’s emotional Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind) saw him back in the UK Top 20 for the first time since the 1980s. And with a new album scheduled for this year, plus his continued position as a key influence on anyone making music involving electronic sounds and a dark heart, don’t expect Gary Numan to start breaking a sweat just yet. Songwriter of the Year If 2016 was the year that the revitalised grime movement finally smashed its way into the UK pop mainstream – and, let’s face it, it was – then Skepta was the man who finally kicked down the door. When future historians want to take the pulse of UK culture in 2016, it’s to Skepta’s fourth album, Konnichiwa, that they will surely turn. Certainly, The Ivors judges are not the only ones to have had their heads turned. Konnichiwa topped countless Albums Of The Year polls and won praise from Mayors and Cabinet Ministers. It triumphed at the Hyundai Mercury Prize – edging out David Bowie’s Blackstar no less – and the album’s commercial and critical success even led Skepta to perform at the 2017 BRIT Awards, just 12 months after the ceremony was accused of snubbing the genre. Skepta’s success has no doubt given a boost to other outstanding grime artists, from Stormzy to Giggs, as they looked to secure their own breakthroughs. But, even if you view Konnichiwa in isolation from everything else that’s going on around it – not easy, actually, as the lyrics brilliantly chronicle modern British urban life – it’s a superb body of work. Songs such as Shutdown, Corn On The Curb and That’s Not Me articulate the year’s trials and tribulations better than anything else released by a British artist all year. Even better, Skepta himself seems determined to continue to keep things as real as his new-found status allows. As he raps on the album’s title track: “Boy better know a man went to the BRITs on a train/Man shutdown Wireless, then I walked home in the rain”. Hopefully, someone somewhere will get him a cab home from The Ivors ceremony but, either way, Skepta’s songs will remain the true soundtrack to the last 12 months, and for a long time to come.

Awards Lifetime Achievement
Lifetime Achievement By definition, those receiving an Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement – and they have previously included the likes of David Gilmour, Damon Albarn, Van Morrison and Pete Townshend – tend to have enjoyed some fairly significant moments during those lifetimes. But Nitin Sawhney has crammed so many incredible things into his 25 year-plus career that he makes even some of the highest-flyers look like under-achievers. Going through every single one of them here would require turning over the entire programme to him (as The Guardian once noted, “It would be easier to jot down what this man can’t do than what he can”) but suffice to say it seems that, since emerging as a backing band player on the Acid Jazz scene, second fiddle is about the only instrument he hasn’t mastered. So this is a man who has released 10 solo albums, including the Mercury Prize nominated Beyond Skin (1999) and the MOBO Award winning Prophecy (2001). His recordings have attracted collaborations with everyone from Imogen Heap and Paul McCartney to Antony Gormley and John Hurt. He’s won more awards than La La Land and Adele put together. He’s also in phenomenal demand as a scorer of film, TV, theatre, video games and commercials, where his work ranges from classical to jazz to electronica. You’ll have heard him scoring everything from Channel 4’s Second Generation to the BBC’s Wonders of the Monsoon natural history project to the movie adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children to martial arts video game Heavenly Sword to a Nike advert. And we haven’t even mentioned his work as a producer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, co-writer, arranger, musical educator or artist in residence at countless international festivals yet. Awards Lifetime Achievement
Lifetime Achievement By definition, those receiving an Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement – and they have previously included the likes of David Gilmour, Damon Albarn, Van Morrison and Pete Townshend – tend to have enjoyed some fairly significant moments during those lifetimes. But Nitin Sawhney has crammed so many incredible things into his 25 year-plus career that he makes even some of the highest-flyers look like under-achievers. Going through every single one of them here would require turning over the entire programme to him (as The Guardian once noted, “It would be easier to jot down what this man can’t do than what he can”) but suffice to say it seems that, since emerging as a backing band player on the Acid Jazz scene, second fiddle is about the only instrument he hasn’t mastered. So this is a man who has released 10 solo albums, including the Mercury Prize nominated Beyond Skin (1999) and the MOBO Award winning Prophecy (2001). His recordings have attracted collaborations with everyone from Imogen Heap and Paul McCartney to Antony Gormley and John Hurt. He’s won more awards than La La Land and Adele put together. He’s also in phenomenal demand as a scorer of film, TV, theatre, video games and commercials, where his work ranges from classical to jazz to electronica. You’ll have heard him scoring everything from Channel 4’s Second Generation to the BBC’s Wonders of the Monsoon natural history project to the movie adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children to martial arts video game Heavenly Sword to a Nike advert. And we haven’t even mentioned his work as a producer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, co-writer, arranger, musical educator or artist in residence at countless international festivals yet. We can only hope that today, as the industry comes together to celebrate all his magnificent achievements, that Sawhney himself has, for once, time to sit back, relax and enjoy it. No summer’s morning passes without radio programmers reaching for their worn out copy of Lovely Day. Film and TV soundtracks alike sizzle or smooch with She’s Lonely or Just The Two Of Us. Countless hip-hop hits have sampled his funky grooves. And both Presidents Obama and Clinton featured his songs in their pre-inaugural celebrations. The PRS for Music Special International Award is presented in recognition of a songwriter with an outstanding career who’s been a major influence on the UK industry, and Withers also fits that Bill perfectly.
