BASCA’s aim is to speak with one voice and to represent, celebrate and protect the rights of music creators. United we can speak with a stronger voice. If you are involved in the creation of music and are not yet a member of BASCA then please join with us. Our message resonates when we speak together to ensure the right people are listening.

The Ivors remain the only award ceremony in the musical calendar not influenced by forces in the media, publishers or record companies. It is judged and presented by songwriters and composers; the writing community itself.

BASCA is indebted to The Ivors Committee and judges who have spent many hours assessing the pieces and people who will be presented with awards today. It’s their insight and experience as creators themselves which makes these Awards all the more valuable to the recipients.

BASCA and The Ivors Britain is a very different world since The Ivors were launched back in 1955, but little has changed over the years in terms of the Awards’ original aim and ethos – to champion and promote British and Irish songwriting and composing.

The idea for the ceremony came from BASCA’s inaugural Chairman, the late Bruce Sievier, and his fellow songwriters, in the days when the organisation was called the Songwriters Guild of Great Britain. It was named in honour of one of the Guild’s founding members, Welsh composer David Ivor Davies (Ivor Novello), who had tragically died a few years earlier.

Novello is largely considered one of the most successful music theatre composers of the 20th century, known for his wartime ballads, as well as hugely popular musicals.

Since The Ivors began in 1956, where Paddy Roberts and Jack Woodman won ‘The Year’s Most Popular Song’ with their hit In Love For The Very First Time, the Awards have celebrated a diverse breadth of songwriting talent that could never have been foreseen.

Over the past 61 years, The Ivors have honoured over 750 British and Irish songwriters and composers – these include The Beatles, Sting, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Elton John and Queen. More recently, Tinie Tempah, the late Amy Winehouse, Adele, Ed Sheeran and Dizzee Rascal have all been Ivor Novello Award recipients, along with Jimmy Napes, the writer behind hits including Sam Smith’s Stay With Me and Clean Bandit’s Rather Be. This year reveals an intriguing blend of genres. From alternative rock, to electronica, hip hop, grime, synth-pop and indie folk, BASCA is delighted that the nominations this year continue to reflect the health and diversity of UK music. The inventive, fun, and quirky spirit so synonymous with British and Irish music remains present, qualities that have contributed to its success worldwide. However, although the industry is alive and kicking

(contributing 4.1bn to the UK economy in 2014), there is much work to be done to protect our current and subsequent music creators.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) recently released its Global Music Report 2016. It shows for the first time that digital revenues have overtaken physical – digital sales contributed to 45% of industry revenues, while physical sales slid to 39%.

Whilst it is good news that digital income for the recorded music industry is slowly creeping back up, this isn’t reflected in the incomes of the people who write the music the industry derives its wealth from. These revenues, vital in funding future investment, are not being fairly returned to rights holders.

BASCA launched its campaign ‘The Day The Music Died’ last year and continues to work closely with the music industry and government to achieve its objectives – a fairer split in gross royalties from digital services, a higher proportion of advertising income, removal of pirate links from search engines, a tightening up of safe harbour definitions, greater transparency; all essential components in nurturing the musical talent of today and tomorrow.

Celebrating the richness and variety of British culture is integral to creating a thriving and relevant songwriting community in this country. BASCA is proud to be a signatory of UK Music’s British Music Equality and Diversity Charter and champions a number of equality campaigns. These initiatives play a vital part in ensuring the music industry fosters a wider diversity of composing and songwriting talent. Many will remember Nile Rodgers crying when he received his PRS for Music Special International Award in 2014, but the most notable display of emotion I can recall was in 2000 when Stevie Wonder made an incredibly moving acceptance speech. I was fine until he launched into an acapella version of Knocks Me Off My Feet but when he reached “I love you, I love you, I love you” a tear rolled down my cheek. Somewhat embarrassed, I turned to my wife and then to my daughter, both were crying. It soon became apparent that pretty much the entire room had tears in its eyes. Moved by the warmth, the humility and the talent of a man whose music we’d loved all our lives.

The In Memoriam section is often capable of bringing a tear to a glass eye and last year’s inclusion of Lynsey De Paul, who had graced The Ivors so often, was particularly poignant. As, for me, was the inclusion of my co-writer Lil’Chris who died so tragically at the age of 24.

Sometimes the tears start to flow before the show has even begun. A couple of years ago, while judging Best Song Musically and Lyrically, one of the panel was brought to tears by a song which went on to become one of our nominees. This year the tears of another talented singer-songwriter prompted a similar outcome.

And finally, it’s always hard not to shed a tear or two at the end of a wonderful event.

After all, that’s when they bring the bill for the booze.

This Ivor Novello Award recognises an outstanding body of work in the classical genre. It is an opportunity for the classical community to acknowledge the excellence and diversity of the recipient’s achievements as a composer.

The Ivors Classical Music Award The Ivors Classical Music Award recognises an outstanding body of work in the classical genre and there can be no more fitting recipient than Oliver Knussen.

Knussen has been at the forefront of composing and conducting for decades now. Having extensively studied composition and been encouraged by no less a talent than Benjamin Britten (his father played principal double bass with the London Symphony Orchestra and had performed at several of Britten’s premières), Knussen’s remarkable career began when he earned his first symphony commission whilst still in his early teens. Aged 15, he even conducted its 1968 premiere at the Royal Festival Hall after the scheduled conductor fell ill.

Since then, Knussen has immersed himself in music, establishing an impressive legacy in orchestral works, opera and other genres, and achieving huge success without ever compromising his unique vision. He has held a number of key roles within the classical community, from head of contemporary music activities at legendary US venue Tanglewood to principal guest conductor of The Hague’s resident orchestra, co-artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival and music director of the London Sinfonietta.

But today’s award recognises his genius for composition. Such is his range that Knussen has composed everything from much-loved children’s operas Where the Wild Things Are (based on the hugely popular book by Maurice Sendak) and Higglety Pigglety Pop!, to challenging works such as his 1969 Concerto for Orchestra, which incorporated elements of jazz, or 1979’s Coursing, which helped establish his reputation for intricate and elaborate pieces that nonetheless speak directly to listeners’ hearts and souls. His brilliant 2006 work Songs for Sue, meanwhile, paid tribute to his late wife, television producer and director Sue Knussen, by adapting Emily Dickinson poems for soprano and 15-piece ensemble, and won huge praise for its emotional depth. Fittingly, the Sue Knussen Composers Fund continues to inspire the next generation of classical musicians by commissioning works from new and emerging composers.

But with his own catalogue of works stretching across decades and taking in almost every type of instrumentation, not to mention a reputation that resounds around the world, it’s impossible to pin Oliver Knussen down to one style or approach. Like his namesake in Oliver Twist, he always wants more and throughout his stellar career, he has never failed to deliver it. An outstanding body of work indeed.

Music has no geographic boundaries, and this Ivor Novello Award specifically celebrates the achievements of British and Irish songwriters who have experienced exceptional international success.

International Achievement To write a hit is one thing. To write a hit that resonates around the world is quite another.

And to keep writing the hits that keep resonating around the world is another thing entirely.

Wayne Hector is one of that rare breed of songwriters. He has penned hit after international hit almost since he moved into songwriting from performing in the ‘90s. He was born in Hackney and grew up in Surrey, but his songs have redefined pop music around the world.

Hector is no stranger to the domestic charts, having worked on hits for the likes of Damage (Forever) and Westlife (Swear It Again, Flying Without Wings – both UK No.1s) in his early days, and more recently The Vamps (Last Night). But over the years he has become the go-to guy for any artist looking for a song that will connect with audiences from Surrey to Suriname.

Consequently, the list of those who have sung his hits reads like a who’s who of modern music – perhaps because he’s also extremely versatile. He’s conquered country music, co-writing Carrie Underwood’s I Just Can’t Live A Lie and Rascal Flatt’s Feels Like Today with Steve Robson. He’s moved into classical crossover, working with Il Divo. He’s done rock (The Fray’s Break Your Plans) and dance (Tiesto’s Red Lights). But contemporary pop music is his real forte and there are few successful pop acts out there who haven’t been helped out by Hector.

His regular partnership with Steve Mac has delivered global smashes for the likes of The Wanted (All Time Low, Glad You Came) and Jess Glynne (Take Me Home). But he’s also worked with many other writers and artists over the years.

His work with One Direction helped the one-time X Factor contestants become one of the biggest groups in the world. He worked on some of their most significant international hits, including Best Song Ever and Steal My Girl, and helped ease their transition from talent show wannabes to global pop phenomenon.

The achievements of Nicki Minaj’s Starships, meanwhile, are perhaps even more impressive.

Co-written by Hector, that song was Minaj’s most successful single, going Top 5 in over 15 countries and logging 21 consecutive weeks in the Billboard US chart Top 10. It’s been certified six-times platinum in the States, selling over 8 million copies.

This Ivor Novello Award acknowledges not just the quality of the songwriters’ catalogue, but also their achievements in inspiring others.

It represents the appreciation of all those who have been inspired to emulate their talent and originality.

The Ivors Inspiration Award No less a star than Oasis’ Noel Gallagher once described Happy Mondays as a “heroic” band, adding that the Manchester group were – along with their counterparts The Stone Roses – the reason “why I started in music”.

Inspiring the most successful songwriter of his generation is probably enough to justify the Mondays picking up The Ivors Inspiration gong in itself. But in fact, while their career may have been chaotic at times, the Mondays have encouraged countless bands to make their mark. The music press may still resound to tales of the band’s legendary excess, but there was much more to the original line-up – Shaun Ryder on vocals, his brother Paul on bass, Mark Day on guitar, Paul Davis on keyboards and Gary Whelan on drums – than the tales of hellraising that followed them from Moss Side to Barbados.

Their early work, in particular, was mind-blowing, as songs such as 24 Hour Party People, Wrote For Luck and Lazyitis introduced the world to their maverick, genre-splicing musical approach, not to mention the freeform lyrical genius of frontman Ryder.

The head of Happy Mondays’ record label Factory, the late, great Tony Wilson, once put Ryder’s words “on a par with WB Yeats”. And, while it seems unlikely Yeats ever penned a couplet like Kinky Afro’s opening salvo of “Son, I’m 30/I only went with your mother ‘cos she’s dirty”, Ryder’s grasp of the surreal, scattershot soundbite elevated Happy Mondays into one of the most important bands of their era.

As their career progressed, they incorporated more of the dance grooves they heard in Manchester’s clubs into their sound, helping to give birth to the Madchester/baggy scene that gripped Britain in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s. But their classic 1990 album Pills ‘N’ Thrills ‘N’ Bellyaches would have succeeded in any era, built as it was on irresistible anthems such as God’s Cop and Loose Fit. The Mondays’ original incarnation came to a messy end after final album Yes Please! in 1992, although their regular reunions remain in high demand on the live circuit. But their real legacy was the huge list of artists they’ve influenced. Everyone from Robbie Williams to Kasabian contains a little bit of Happy Mondays, and anyone out there keeping rock’n’roll’s maverick spirit alive owes Shaun, Paul, Mark, Paul and Gary the greatest of thanks.

And, while it seems unlikely Yeats ever penned a couplet like Kinky Afro’s opening salvo of “Son, I’m 30/I only went with your mother ‘cos she’s dirty”, Ryder’s grasp of the surreal, scattershot soundbite elevated Happy Mondays into one of the most important bands of their era.

As their career progressed, they incorporated more of the dance grooves they heard in Manchester’s clubs into their sound, helping to give birth to the Madchester/baggy scene that gripped Britain in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s. But their classic 1990 album Pills ‘N’ Thrills ‘N’ Bellyaches would have succeeded in any era, built as it was on irresistible anthems such as God’s Cop and Loose Fit. The Mondays’ original incarnation came to a messy end after final album Yes Please! in 1992, although their regular reunions remain in high demand on the live circuit. But their real legacy was the huge list of artists they’ve influenced. Everyone from Robbie Williams to Kasabian contains a little bit of Happy Mondays, and anyone out there keeping rock’n’roll’s maverick spirit alive owes Shaun, Paul, Mark, Paul and Gary the greatest of thanks.

The Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year acknowledges a songwriter that has written an outstanding body of work released during the award year. It has been presented annually since 1969.

Songwriter of the Year Adele’s musical 2015 didn’t actually begin until October, when Hello – her first new song since Skyfall, the 2012 James Bond theme – was teased to X Factor viewers. Her album, 25, didn’t even come out until late November. And yet, when it comes to choosing the year’s outstanding song collection, the work that makes up 25 – Adele’s third album, and her first since the blockbusting international success of 2011’s 21 – still makes its own, undeniable case. It may have only been available for a few short weeks at the end of the year but, in that time, it made more of an impression than most albums do during their entire shelf life.

It’s not just the astounding statistics behind the album’s success, although Lord knows they are incredible. The album sold an unprecedented 800,307 copies in its first week on sale in the UK, and an even more incredible 3.38 million in the United States. The video for Hello became the fastest ever to hit 100 million views on video streaming site Vevo. The album has already sold around 20 million copies worldwide. But none of that would mean anything if the songs weren’t making the same impact on listeners as the album was on worldwide music charts. Ironically, Adele found the process of writing the album quite difficult, initially suffering from writer’s block and scrapping several recordings. With the help of songwriting partners such as Greg Kurstin, Bruno Mars and Tobias Jesso Jr she worked through it, however, and resulting songs such as Hello, When We Were Young, All I Ask and Send My Love (To Your New Lover) found her in some of the most inspired songwriting form of her life.

If 21 had been a break-up album, Adele billed 25 as a “make-up album”, a more reflective body of work concerning her life, regrets, friendships and motherhood. But anyone who saw the mass weeping that accompanied the more emotional moments of her recent live arena shows would be in no doubt that her lyrics continue to resonate with her audience, whether young or old.

This collection of songs continues to set sales records, but it also showcases a bolder approach to Adele’s music and songwriting. To live up to the expectations around the album seemed incredible. To surpass them seemed impossible. But then, for Adele, doing the impossible continues to be no big deal.

To pen a single outstanding song is an achievement in and of itself, but to pen a body of enduring and exceptional songs is something extraordinary.

This Ivor Novello Award acknowledges outstanding talent, and the body of work that this extraordinary talent has produced.

Outstanding Song Collection “I’d like to think that we’ve got songs that would sound good on the radio or in a disco or on a Walkman,” Simple Minds’ frontman Jim Kerr once told Smash Hits magazine. “It’s important that it works on different levels.”

Discos and Walkmans and, indeed, even Smash Hits magazine may no longer be part of the modern world, but the fact that Simple Minds are still here shows that their songs are still working on different levels, almost 40 years after the band first formed in Glasgow.

Singer Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill first worked together in short-lived punk band Johnny & The Self-Abusers, surely a name never designed to be up in lights. But the band they formed immediately afterwards – joined by the group’s third key songwriter, keyboard player Mick MacNeil – always seemed destined for bigger things.

Their early work had an experimental, alternative edge that was often forgotten when the band hit stadium rock paydirt in the late ‘80s. But albums such as 1979’s Life In A Day and Real To Real Cacophony, 1980’s Empires And Dance and 1981’s Sons And Fascination/ Sister Feelings Call still resonate decades down the line. The Manic Street Preachers hailed that period as a key influence on their Futurology album, with singer James Dean Bradfield declaring: “I’ll never get bored of those records – they had something that will never leave me. Simple Minds were crystalline gods to me.”

Maybe so, but Simple Minds were also always motivated by something very human. Even at their artiest moments, their love of melody shone through, and when the band moved into more commercial territory on 1982’s New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) and 1984’s Sparkle In The Rain – home to huge hits such as Waterfront, Up On The Catwalk and Speed Your Love To Me – their songs retained their ability to connect with audiences both intimate and gigantic.

That served them well when 1985’s Once Upon A Time and 1989’s Street Fighting Years made them one of the biggest bands on the planet.

MacNeil left the band after Street Fighting Years, although Kerr and Burchill remain and have successfully kept the band at the top. But it’s the trio’s remarkable catalogue of songs, from Chelsea Girl to Promised You A Miracle to Belfast Child, that provided the foundation stones for all their success. And these days, you don’t even need a Walkman to hear them.

PRS for Music Outstanding Contribution to British Music Francis Bacon once said that it’s the job of the artist to deepen the mystery. The conceptual artist would probably have loved Portishead. The band – named after a suburb of Bristol, the city where they formed – may have made some of the most cherished music of the last three decades but, in an age where most stars Instagram their breakfast and tweet their every random thought, the people behind those songs have maintained a mystique from another age.

Since forming in 1991, Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley have only made three albums, taking the time to ensure each one was as ground-breaking and earth-shattering as they could possibly be. They famously walked away from the band at the end of the ‘90s, just when it seemed to be on the verge of a gigantic international breakthrough. And singer Gibbons articulates heartbreak like no other singer on the planet, and yet never – and, for once, we really do mean never, ever – gives interviews.

What’s not in any doubt, however, is the power of their songwriting. Portishead’s debut album, 1994’s Dummy, re-arranged music’s tectonic plates, coming to define the genre that would be known as trip-hop, although Portishead themselves never sought such a tag. The album won the Mercury Prize and is consistently ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time in magazine polls, while songs such as Sour Times and Glory Box became the soundtrack of many of the era’s late nights and heartbreaks.

Portishead, of course, reacted to the fuss by disappearing for several years, before returning with 1997’s Portishead, a darker, bleaker album that nevertheless proved every bit as successful and important, even delivering a Top 10 single in All Mine.

Uncomfortable with the attention brought by unasked-for fame, the band – while never formally splitting – disappeared again until their oft-dreamed of reunion for 2008’s Third album – more wide-ranging and dance-orientated than the previous two records – and some rapturously received live shows. They continue to thrill and surprise in equal measure, whether headlining at Glastonbury or contributing an ABBA cover to the High-Rise soundtrack.

Barrow once said that making music “generally is hell, because we’re not a band in the traditional sense”. But anyone looking for non-traditional listening pleasure will find that listening to Portishead is heaven. Mystery solved.

Awards Lifetime Achievement

This Ivor Novello Award acknowledges a lifetime of creative output and the indelible mark that output has left on successive generations of songwriters, composers and music fans.

Lifetime Achievement No one picks up the Lifetime Achievement Ivor Novello Award without having had a truly impressive career. But surely even few recipients of this most prestigious award have displayed the sheer breadth of songwriting attainment that Damon Albarn has.

After all, this is a man who has fronted not one, but two of the most successful bands of the last 25 years. Blur’s career alone would have been enough for most people (and, indeed, most lifetime achievement awards): after all, they were one of the few acts that could genuinely claim to have shifted the country’s music scene on its axis and taken alternative rock onto the tabloid front pages and 10 O’Clock News bulletins of the mainstream.

For all that hype and attention, Blur’s success was built on the natural songwriting partnership of Albarn and guitarist Graham Coxon, which proved every bit as inspirational on last year’s comeback album The Magic Whip as it did on such enduring classics as Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994) and Blur (1997).

Blur went on hiatus after 2003’s Think Tank album, recorded without Coxon, but between then and the 2009 reunion, Albarn was anything but idle. He’d already started Gorillaz, a band represented by cartoons but actually comprising a range of brilliant musicians, from The Clash’s Mick Jones to Bobby Womack. Globally, their achievements perhaps surpass even Blur’s, with songs such as Clint Eastwood, DARE, Feel Good Inc. and Stylo propelling them to millions of album sales around the world.

But even being in two hit bands isn’t enough for Albarn. Like a musical shark, he never sleeps and always keeps moving forward. So his musical career has also comprised a hugely successful solo album (2014’s Everyday Robots); alternative supergroups The Good, The Bad & The Queen and Rocket Juice & The Moon; regular forays into world and African music under the Mali Music and Africa Express banners; production and film soundtrack work and even wildly successful ventures into opera and musical theatre with Monkey: Journey To The West, Doctor Dee and Wonder.land.

Throughout it all, Albarn has maintained a renaissance everyman approach that means his work is always challenging, but never inaccessible. He may be a polymath, but all his music adds up, meaning he is one of the few modern songwriters whose mere presence on a project serves as a hallmark of quality. Awards Lifetime Achievement

This Ivor Novello Award acknowledges a lifetime of creative output and the indelible mark that output has left on successive generations of songwriters, composers and music fans.

Lifetime Achievement No one picks up the Lifetime Achievement Ivor Novello Award without having had a truly impressive career. But surely even few recipients of this most prestigious award have displayed the sheer breadth of songwriting attainment that Damon Albarn has.

After all, this is a man who has fronted not one, but two of the most successful bands of the last 25 years. Blur’s career alone would have been enough for most people (and, indeed, most lifetime achievement awards): after all, they were one of the few acts that could genuinely claim to have shifted the country’s music scene on its axis and taken alternative rock onto the tabloid front pages and 10 O’Clock News bulletins of the mainstream.

For all that hype and attention, Blur’s success was built on the natural songwriting partnership of Albarn and guitarist Graham Coxon, which proved every bit as inspirational on last year’s comeback album The Magic Whip as it did on such enduring classics as Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994) and Blur (1997).

Blur went on hiatus after 2003’s Think Tank album, recorded without Coxon, but between then and the 2009 reunion, Albarn was anything but idle. He’d already started Gorillaz, a band represented by cartoons but actually comprising a range of brilliant musicians, from The Clash’s Mick Jones to Bobby Womack. Globally, their achievements perhaps surpass even Blur’s, with songs such as Clint Eastwood, DARE, Feel Good Inc. and Stylo propelling them to millions of album sales around the world.

But even being in two hit bands isn’t enough for Albarn. Like a musical shark, he never sleeps and always keeps moving forward. So his musical career has also comprised a hugely successful solo album (2014’s Everyday Robots); alternative supergroups The Good, The Bad & The Queen and Rocket Juice & The Moon; regular forays into world and African music under the Mali Music and Africa Express banners; production and film soundtrack work and even wildly successful ventures into opera and musical theatre with Monkey: Journey To The West, Doctor Dee and Wonder.land.

Throughout it all, Albarn has maintained a renaissance everyman approach that means his work is always challenging, but never inaccessible. He may be a polymath, but all his music adds up, meaning he is one of the few modern songwriters whose mere presence on a project serves as a hallmark of quality. And, while you may never be certain which Damon Albarn is going to turn up, you can always guarantee he’ll be great company.

PRS for Music Special International Award Bryan Adams has been such a huge part of the UK music scene for so many years that it’s easy to forget he’s actually Canadian. His parents were British and he spends enough time at his London home for him to be identified as one of Chelsea FC’s most prominent supporters.

But the connection with the local music industry and the British music-loving public goes much deeper than that. Because, ever since his breakthrough international album, 1984’s Reckless, his songs have soundtracked UK rock fans’ lives. That album contained many songs that have endured across the decades – Summer of ’69, It’s Only Love, Run To You and Heaven – the latter two such versatile anthems that, years later, they were massive hits all over again for dance acts Rage and DJ Sammy respectively.

Since then, Adams’ career has gone from strength to strength, built on songwriting that’s both respectful of the craft’s traditions and always in tune with modern audiences. Many of those songs have been written with his songwriting partner Jim Vallance, who he met by chance in a Vancouver music store.

Reckless’ follow-up, 1987’s Into The Fire, was another gigantic worldwide hit, but it was 1991’s Waking Up The Neighbours that really set the bar. It contained his song (Everything I Do) I Do It For You, co-written with Michael Kamen and Mutt Lange, which featured on the soundtrack to Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. It went to No.1 in the UK and stayed there for an incredible 16 weeks – a UK record, and so long that magazines ran articles indicating how much life had changed during its marathon run at the summit.

Adams’ life changed too. He became one of the few stars who could play in stadiums anywhere in the world and was in huge demand for collaborations and movie soundtracks.

But his dedication to his songwriting never wavered, whether coming up with huge hits for himself (The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You, When You’re Gone with the Spice Girls’ Mel C) or others (he wrote Chicane’s Don’t Give Up). Last year, he released his first album of original songs in several years, Get Up, which showed his partnership with Vallance was as fruitful as ever.

Along the way, he’s somehow found time to become a world-renowned photographer and a great philanthropist, with his Bryan Adams Foundation helping thousands of children and young people with education and learning opportunities over the years.

Today, however, we celebrate his songs and the special part they’ve played in British life.
