Welcome to the Ivor Novello Awards. BASCA is extremely proud that we have presented these awards every year for the last 60 years. They have remained true to their aim, which is to raise the profile of British and Irish songwriters and composers and celebrate the excellence of their creations. It’s what BASCA is here to do – to celebrate, protect, speak up for and support composers and songwriters of all genres. In this milestone 60th year it’s important to thank a host of people, some of whom have worked with us for a long time, who will ensure today is a success BASCA is indebted to The Ivors Committee Chairman Gary Osborne and all the writers who have given up their time to be judges. We are grateful to Derek Healey and Capitol House Productions who have created the stage presentation for the last 25 years; Mark Fishlock and Tom Robinson who have given us the script and narration respectively; to our inimitable host Paul Gambaccini who will present today for the 28th consecutive year; the team at the Grosvenor House who have looked after us since 1977; Fran Matthews for organising the awards and everyone else behind the scenes at BASCA who will ensure today is as memorable as ever. The Ivor Novello Award statuette is a beautiful thing (called Euterpe after the Goddess of music, song and dance) and BASCA is particularly grateful to Mike Wilson, who has cast and hand finished each individual statuette for 40 years. My final thanks go to our sponsor PRS for Music, who have supported The Ivors since 1974. I wish everyone a great day and in particular those nominated and those who will collect one of our beautiful statuettes today.

Sixty years ago, in 1955, the Ivor Novello Awards launched. Organised by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA, which was then called the Songwriters Guild of Great Britain), the idea for the ceremony came from BASCA’s inaugural Chairman, the late Bruce Sievier and his fellow songwriters in order to champion and promote British songwriting. It was named in honour of one of the Guild’s founding members, Welsh composer David Ivor Davies (Ivor Novello), who had tragically died a few years earlier. Novello is largely considered one of the most successful music theatre composers of the 20th century, known for his wartime ballads, as well as hugely popular musicals.

When radio was first introduced, songwriters were paid no royalties at all, told they should be glad for the ‘advertising’. In the 1980s, the same happened with the rise of MTV and the other new TV channels showing back to back music videos. Today something similar is happening with digital royalties.

Thus the first ceremony took place in 1956, honouring songs released the previous year. Since then, the awards have grown to become one of the most prestigious in the music industry calendar – hosted by, as well as awarded to, the cream of songwriting and composing talent.

So BASCA launched its The Day The Music Died campaign, asking to have more transparency around digital deals, to achieve a fairer share of digital royalty income and advertising revenues linked to our members’ works and to have better protection online both through search engines and the easier removal of infringing websites and apps. It has sparked a vital debate across the industry and one that will continue.

Because ever since the dawn of the music business, from radio to vinyl, cassettes to CD, and downloads to streaming, songwriters and composers have had

Amongst the 750 British and Irish songwriters and composers celebrated by The Ivors over the years are The Beatles, Sting, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Elton John and Queen. In more recent years, Tinie Tempah, the late Amy Winehouse, Adele, Lily Allen and Dizzee Rascal have all been Ivor Novello Award recipients, as well as Iain Archer (the man behind Snow Patrol’s Run), Mark Hill (aka Artful Dodger, whose stand out classics include ReRewind feat. Craig David) and Cathy Dennis (who wrote Toxic for Britney Spears to name but one on her many hits).

Meanwhile, collaborative work with The European Composer and Songwriter Alliance (ECSA), PRS for Music, UK Music, higher education providers and a growing number of partner organisations continue to Annunzio Paolo Mantovani and John Dankworth at the 1957 Ivor Novello Awards strengthen BASCA’s voice throughout Europe. Ivor Novello’s Keep The Home Fires Burning helped us win a war, We Shall Overcome became an anthem for the oppressed, Tom Robinson’s Glad To Be Gay made us think a little more deeply about issues of sexuality, Ebony And Ivory set a template for racial harmony and Candle In The Wind (Goodbye England’s Rose) captured the mood of a nation in mourning. So yes, I do believe that a song can make a difference. Among the many great songs we honour today is the one that made the biggest difference of all ... a song that actually saved lives. If I live to be a hundred I’ll never write a song that important and even if I did I couldn’t promise to give away all the royalties. So I guess I’ll just console myself with something Carole King said to her mother in Beautiful, the show about her life ... “When you hear a song you love ... It’s like somebody understands you” If even one of my songs has ever made anyone feel that way .. that’s enough for me. Have a great day!

Paid by the piece his attempts to improve output, and his wages, may lead to disaster. Another newcomer, Peter, is a black apprentice brought over from the Greg Plantation in the West Indies to speak in favour of the abolition of slavery. All around is change and striving, with workers rallying for their rights and the Greg Family struggling to maintain the status quo. To pen a single outstanding song is an achievement in and of itself, but to pen a body of enduring and exceptional songs is something extraordinary. This Ivor Novello Award acknowledges outstanding talent, and the body of work that this extraordinary talent has produced.

Outstanding Song Collection One of his most celebrated songs famously asked for “one moment in time”, but in fact Albert Hammond has provided dozens of such moments over a career that has produced hits across the last six decades. And what moments they have been. Since writing his first chart smash – Little Arrows, a Number Two for Leapy Lee in 1968 – Hammond has enjoyed success as a recording artist and a producer while, as a songwriter, the hits have just kept coming. And it’s the sheer range of his work that sets Hammond apart. He has scored hits on pop, country, R&B and Latin charts. His songs have been recorded by everyone from Elton John to Tina Turner, Julio Iglesias to Johnny Cash, Whitney Houston to The Carpenters. He has co-written with talents as diverse as Diane Warren and Hal David, Mike Hazlewood and John Bettis. And his songs have driven worldwide record sales of over 300 million. His work will need no introduction to The Ivors audience, but even a casual music fan would be familiar with this most outstanding of song collections. From his own hits such as It Never Rains In Southern California and The Free Electric Band to enduring favourites such as The Air That I Breathe (Number Two for The Hollies in 1974) and When I Need You (Number One for Leo Sayer in 1977), Hammond pretty much owned the 1970s. But while some songwriters dip in and out of fashion, Hammond’s ageless craft has always managed to move with the times and changing tastes. So he and Warren co-wrote 1987’s rock powerhouse Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now for Starship, nominated for an Oscar. He and Bettis penned the pop-soul belter and 1988 Olympic theme One Moment In Time for Whitney Houston and won an Emmy. And he and David came up with 1984’s To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before for Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson, crossing Latin and Country genre boundaries. In the Nineties, he wrote for Diana Ross; in the Noughties, he worked with Duffy. One of his finest songs, Don’t Turn Around, was recorded by artists as varied as Tina Turner, Aswad and Ace Of Bass. In recent years, he has reclaimed such gems for himself, re-recording some of his best-known songs for his Legend albums (where he also sang a duet with his son, Albert Hammond Jr of The Strokes) and taking the catalogue back on the road. But really, his is a legacy that will endure through the ages, not so much moments in time as timeless moments.

This Ivor Novello Award recognises an outstanding body of work in the classical genre. It is an opportunity for the classical community to acknowledge the excellence and diversity of the recipient’s achievements as a composer.

The Ivors Classical Music Award “There’s no requirement to be normal,” Judith Weir once said. She was talking about why she loves opera, although she could also have been speaking about her own remarkable career. As a public figure, Weir is a ground-breaker, becoming the first female Master of the Queen’s Music last year. And as a composer, she’s a one-off. It’s been clear that she possesses great talent ever since she starred as a teenage oboist with the National Youth Orchestra, but she also has a rare gift for communication that has seen her reach far beyond the usual classical enclaves with her work. And what a body of work she has built up. Her compositions range from children’s songs to full-blown operas, via piano concertos and chamber music, but everything she does displays the same lightness of touch and musical clarity. Critics have hailed the elegant simplicity and accessibility of her work, although she’s never afraid to challenge. So, in her operatic work alone, she has written mini-operas such as 1985’s The Black Spider, the full-length likes of 1990’s The Vanishing Bridegroom and 1994’s Blond Eckbert and 2005’s pioneering Armida, an opera composed for Channel 4 television. She also cares passionately about music education and has held many significant roles within the classical sector, including Artistic Director of the Spitalfields Festival. And the recipient of The Ivors Classical Music Award this year is no stranger to picking up prizes, having scooped the 2001 South Bank Show music award and the 1997 Lincoln Centre’s Stoeger Prize. Nor is she new to royal circles; she was awarded a CBE in 2005 for services to music and the Queen’s medal for music in 2007. So it’s no surprise that, when she was appointed to her latest royal role last year – shattering a glass ceiling that has existed since the post was created by Charles I – the classical world was delighted. Weir is a confident champion of contemporary music and a great advertisement for its continued relevance. On her appointment, she declared her intention to travel the country investigating music education and to challenge her contemporaries to create music that is accessible to all. “They said it’s absolutely up to the person who does it to make it their own,” she told The Guardian on her appointment and it seems nailed on that this most individual of classical figures will do precisely that. With Judith Weir at the helm, the Queen’s Music is in the safest of hands.

PRS for Music Outstanding Contribution To British Music The word “icon” may have become over-used in popular culture but, in the case of George Alan O’Dowd, no other epithet will do. Ever since he exploded into the British cultural consciousness in 1982 as Do You Really Want To Hurt Me became an enormous hit for his band Culture Club – his androgynous image prompting endless playground discussion and tabloid debate, his irresistible songwriting prompting millions of record sales – Boy George has been a maverick presence at large in the mainstream. He’s endured his share of tough times personally, but he’s always bounced back and his music has always been at the heart of each recovery. The Culture Club years were studded with hit after international hit as great songs such as Church Of The Poison Mind, Karma Chameleon, Victims and Move Away flowed from the studio. Over the course of four successful albums, George became a huge star at home and abroad, guaranteed to enliven any chat show or chart show. And when the band broke up in 1986 he embarked on a solo career that has always produced sparkling music, whether recording under his own name (as with hits such as The Crying Game, Sold, No Clause 28 and To Be Reborn), his dance music persona Jesus Loves You or other electronic pseudonyms. Interest in Culture Club has remained strong around the world, with the original line-up back together for a new album and live dates this year. But George is now a member of more than one Club. Over the years, he’s also become a renowned DJ, starred in musicals, run a clothing line, presented radio shows and even once appeared as himself in an episode of The A-Team – the 1980s TV action show famous for the catchphrase, “I love it when a plan comes together.” And, while George’s career may have been too unconventional for there to have been too much of a plan behind it, there’s no doubting his status as a brilliant songwriter and a national treasure. That’s why, today, The Ivors will come together to hail his Outstanding Contribution To British Music and his iconic presence. All hail King George.

Songwriter of the Year Later this summer, this year’s recipient of the prestigious Songwriter of the Year will headline three nights at Wembley Stadium. Ed Sheeran has already announced his intention to play the 80,000-capacity shows the way he usually does; just him and his guitar. But then he knows he doesn’t need gimmicks to fill even that cavernous stadium. What will fill Wembley three times over is the thing that has filled Sheeran’s gigs since he first started playing as a teenager back in 2005: his songs. And throughout 2014, Sheeran’s second album X proved the enduring power of a great song collection. From the moment irresistible lead single Sing (co-written with Pharrell Williams) shot to Number One in April, giving him his first UK chart-topper, X has proved to be a blockbuster of epic proportions. In an era of generally shrinking album sales, X’s statistics are remarkable. Despite only being released in late June, it sold 1.7 million UK copies in 2014, the first album to sell more than a million copies in a calendar year since Emeli Sandé’s Our Version Of Events in 2012, and the biggest total for an artist album since Adele’s 21 in 2011. It spent 12 weeks at Number One and never left the Top Six during 2014. The album also became an international phenomenon. Sheeran became Spotify’s most streamed global artist of the year and X its most-streamed album, while the album also hit Number One in the United States, Australia, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. None of which, of course, would mean too much if the songs weren’t up to scratch. But X proves that Sheeran brings much more to the party than his own self-deprecating reference to “Singing about love/And where it goes wrong” (on album-opener One) suggests. Because X is an album that contains both the salacious groove of Don’t and the sensitive Alzheimer’s Disease exposition of Afire Love. An album that’s equally at home with the rap flow of Take It Back as with the classic balladry of Thinking Out Loud (the second UK Number One single from the album). And an album by an artist who, somehow, also found time to co-write excellent songs for the likes of One Direction, Jessie Ware and Rixton.

Awards The Ivors Inspiration Award

This Ivor Novello Award acknowledges not just the quality of the songwriters’ catalogue, but also their achievements in inspiring others. It represents the appreciation of all those who have been inspired to emulate their talent and originality.

The Ivors Inspiration Award As a band, the Manic Street Preachers have always worn their own inspirations on their sleeve. Even, occasionally, on their album sleeves. So it’s perhaps not surprising that the band that voraciously hoovered up the greatest music, art and literature available to them and channelled it into their own glorious music have, over the course of an almost 30-year career, become a huge source of inspiration themselves. Because over those years the Manics – singer/guitarist James Dean Bradfield, bassist Nicky Wire and drummer Sean Moore, not forgetting guitarist Richey Edwards, who went missing 20 years ago – have stood for everything that’s vital about rock music. Fiercely intelligent lyrically and always progressive musically, they have crammed more into their career than 100 other bands put together. And, indeed, they have essentially managed to be several different bands during that career. Who else could have pulled off both the provocative posturing of 1992 debut Generation Terrorists and the statesmanlike sensitivity of 1996’s megahit Everything Must Go? The harrowing despair and dissent of 1994’s The Holy Bible and the elegant reflections of 2013’s Rewind The Film? This Ivor Novello Award acknowledges not just the quality of the songwriters’ catalogue, but also their achievements in inspiring others. It represents the appreciation of all those who have been inspired to emulate their talent and originality.

The Ivors Inspiration Award As a band, the Manic Street Preachers have always worn their own inspirations on their sleeve. Even, occasionally, on their album sleeves. So it’s perhaps not surprising that the band that voraciously hoovered up the greatest music, art and literature available to them and channelled it into their own glorious music have, over the course of an almost 30-year career, become a huge source of inspiration themselves. Because over those years the Manics – singer/guitarist James Dean Bradfield, bassist Nicky Wire and drummer Sean Moore, not forgetting guitarist Richey Edwards, who went missing 20 years ago – have stood for everything that’s vital about rock music. Fiercely intelligent lyrically and always progressive musically, they have crammed more into their career than 100 other bands put together. And, indeed, they have essentially managed to be several different bands during that career. Who else could have pulled off both the provocative posturing of 1992 debut Generation Terrorists and the statesmanlike sensitivity of 1996’s megahit Everything Must Go? The harrowing despair and dissent of 1994’s The Holy Bible and the elegant reflections of 2013’s Rewind The Film? To mark the 60th anniversary of the Ivor Novello Awards BASCA has created a special award; an Ivor that not only acknowledges songwriting – it acknowledges the achievements of a British and an Irish songwriter, who through their songwriting have changed the lives of those in need.

The Ivors Special Anniversary Award When people talk about a pop song saving their life, they usually mean it figuratively. But Do They Know It’s Christmas?, written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, has saved literally tens of thousands of lives since its first incarnation 30 years ago – the perfect reason to honour its composers with The Ivors Special Anniversary Award. The original Band Aid recording was put together after Geldof, then best known as singer of The Boomtown Rats, saw news of the Ethiopian famine on the BBC. He was determined to do something about it, but wasn’t sure what – until he spoke to Ultravox singer Ure, and they decided to try and write a song. So what would become, at the time, the biggest selling single in history was put together in just a few days, with the pair attempting to cement their separate ideas into one cohesive whole. Ure has attributed the song’s unusual structure – the “Feed the world!” hook was the last thing to be added, and only appears at the end of the song – to this process but, however unconventional the song, it has captured the imagination of successive generations of musicians and the public. Viewed purely as a pop song, the fact that it has attracted the vocal talents of Bono, Chris Martin, Sting, Paul Weller, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, Ed Sheeran and One Direction and been a hit in four separate incarnations is remarkable enough. But it’s the huge amount of money raised for humanitarian relief since it first chimed out across Sarm West Studios in London in late 1984 that marks Do They Know It’s Christmas? down as one of the most incredible compositions in history. Its original target was to raise £250,000. Yet over the years, the Band Aid Trust has in fact raised and spent around $230 million on both immediate famine relief and longer-term projects, while the latest version, last year’s Band Aid 30 – with lyrics rewritten for the occasion – raised money to fight the Ebola crisis in West Africa.

And although Geldof and Ure’s songwriting catalogues contain many other classics, not even I Don’t Like Mondays or Vienna can rival the impact of the festive tune they hammered out together in double quick time 30 years ago. This Ivor Novello Award acknowledges a lifetime of creative output and the indelible mark that output has left on successive generations of songwriters, composers and music fans.

Lifetime Achievement Very few bands can genuinely claim to have changed the course of music history. Yet the recipients of the 2015 Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement – only the 15th to have been awarded during the awards’ 60-year history – are definitely one such band. Because, without Black Sabbath, there would be no Heavy Metal. Before their debut, selftitled 1970 album, other bands had rocked, but none of them had rocked as hard as songs such as N.I.B and the title track. The core elements of the metal genre were all there on that debut: doomy, hard-hitting riffs; dark, horror-fuelled lyrics and a sense of wild abandon a million miles away from the mainstream. Together, it was like nothing anyone had ever heard before. Over 40 years later, the influence of that album and its successors still looms large over the worlds of rock and metal. Bands as successful and varied as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Nirvana and Rage Against The Machine have acknowledged their influence, and the enthusiasm for 2013’s Sabbath comeback album, 13, and its accompanying world tour, showed that their music continues to reach new generation after new generation of rock fans. Back in the beginning, however, the original line-up of Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums) were a band in a hurry. Compared to modern release cycles, it seems mind-boggling that the follow-up to Black Sabbath came out later in the same year as that ground-breaking debut. Furthermore, Paranoid contained such timeless classics such as War Pigs, Iron Man and the title track, songs that still rate as amongst the most important and popular metal anthems of all time.

Thereafter, the classic albums continued to come thick and fast: Master Of Reality in 1971, Vol.4 in 1972, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in 1973, each one built on Iommi, Butler and Ward’s earth-shaking musicianship and topped off by Osbourne’s unhinged vocals. By the time the frontman left in 1979, the band had produced eight hit albums and sold tens of millions of records but, more importantly, had completely restructured the global rock landscape. Sabbath’s legacy has endured over the years since, sometimes with the original band members together, sometimes with them apart. But what the success of the current reunion proves – even without Ward being part of it – is just how important those pioneering early years were. Even 45 years on, there’s still nothing on earth quite like Black Sabbath.

But his remarkable songwriting career, spanning more than five decades, several genres and millions of record sales, is not even the half of his story. Williams was a multi-hyphenate multi-tasking talent long before such diversification became standard for entertainers. TV theme composer, film scorer, champion of songwriters everywhere, Little Enos Burdette in Smokey And The Bandit (he also has an accomplished TV and movie acting career) – these are all roles he has played, contributing to a CV that most people would assume had been highly embellished if it wasn’t all a matter of public record. And his records have certainly always connected with the public. He wrote Evergreen, the love theme from A Star Is Born, for which he won a Grammy and an Oscar. He wrote breezy listening hits We’ve Only Just Begun and Rainy Days And Mondays for The Carpenters. Bowie recorded his song Fill Your Heart for his Hunky Dory album. He wrote Rainbow Connection, a hippyish anthem so intrinsic to the enduring appeal of The Muppets that it appeared in both their very first film, 1979’s The Muppet Movie, and the franchise’s modern reboot, 2011’s The Muppets. And when Daft Punk needed to humanise their robot funk on their 2013 monster hit album Random Access Memories, there was only one man they needed to interface with. Williams ended up co-writing Beyond and Touch, singing on the latter, and helping them pick up their Album Of The Year Grammy. In recent years, he has also served the wider songwriting community as President and Chairman of ASCAP, helping composers get the money they deserve for their efforts. But, whether singing, writing, acting or defending the principle of copyright, he brings a passion and generosity of spirit to his work that means he can fit in almost anywhere. And, as that CV clearly indicates, he usually does. Some of his compositions have already lasted going on 50 years but you can bet that, when someone – be they human, robot or frog – needs a great song, he’ll continue to be the guy to call.

Awards BASCA Fellowship

The Fellowship is the highest honour BASCA bestows. It is peer recognition of the enormous contribution a particular songwriter or composer has made to the British musical landscape.

BASCA Fellowship At the launch of her latest solo album in London last year, Annie Lennox was very clear about one thing: she is not a celebrity. “My name sometimes gets put in the celebrity category and it freaks me out,” she said as she launched her latest collection of cover versions, Nostalgia. “I’ve never seen myself that way and I find it diminishing. What I am is a musician and a communicator.” Lennox, of course, is famous; one of the most recognisable performers of the last 40 years, in fact. But if her point was that her renown has been built upon genuine achievement as a superb singer and songwriter, then it was a well-made one. There has been little of the modern day celebrity stuff and nonsense about her career in The Tourists, Eurythmics and as a solo star – no reality TV appearances, fragrance launches or glossy at-home magazine spreads. But there has been an awful lot of convention-defying and mould-breaking – and an avalanche of great music. After some initial success as new-wavey pop group The Tourists, Lennox and her musical partner Dave Stewart formed Eurythmics, who went on to be one of the biggest groups of the 1980s. The Fellowship is the highest honour BASCA bestows. It is peer recognition of the enormous contribution a particular songwriter or composer has made to the British musical landscape.

BASCA Fellowship At the launch of her latest solo album in London last year, Annie Lennox was very clear about one thing: she is not a celebrity. “My name sometimes gets put in the celebrity category and it freaks me out,” she said as she launched her latest collection of cover versions, Nostalgia. “I’ve never seen myself that way and I find it diminishing. What I am is a musician and a communicator.” Lennox, of course, is famous; one of the most recognisable performers of the last 40 years, in fact. But if her point was that her renown has been built upon genuine achievement as a superb singer and songwriter, then it was a well-made one. There has been little of the modern day celebrity stuff and nonsense about her career in The Tourists, Eurythmics and as a solo star – no reality TV appearances, fragrance launches or glossy at-home magazine spreads. But there has been an awful lot of convention-defying and mould-breaking – and an avalanche of great music. After some initial success as new-wavey pop group The Tourists, Lennox and her musical partner Dave Stewart formed Eurythmics, who went on to be one of the biggest groups of the 1980s.
