BASCA Welcome Not everyone in this room today has heard of BASCA; the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers & Authors, the organisation behind The Ivors. It is owned by songwriters and composers themselves, who created The Ivors and developed them into the highly respected awards they have become. Over the past year BASCA has been transforming. We have new directors; new staff and expertise; new services which financially benefit all of our members; new events, training and socials; new branding; a new website and digital services; and we’re moving to new premises. We have a stronger relationship with our main sponsor PRS for Music, who we are grateful to for helping us make The Ivors such a special event. It is a very exciting time to join us. It doesn’t matter what type of music you write; BASCA needs you to continue, no matter where you are in your career. The Ivors Committee Apart from co-writing classics like These Foolish Things and A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square Eric Maschwitz was an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, Head of BBC Light Entertainment and founder and Chairman of The Songwriters Guild (now known as BASCA). 1956 American music dominated our airwaves so, in an attempt to encourage homegrown talent, Maschwitz introduced an award ceremony for British composers. It was named in honour of Ivor Novello; a young artist called Hazel Underwood created the statuette, a solid bronze depiction of Euterpe the Muse of music, Billy Butlin provided the sponsorship and The Ivors was up and running. In the 60’s radio producer/songwriter Brian Willey put The Ivors onto the BBC where it was presented by Brian Matthew with music from Joe Loss. Willey was then appointed Chairman of The Ivors Committee, a position he occupied with distinction for 40 years. By the mid-seventies The Ivors had found it’s ideal sponsor in PRS for Music, thus began the longest award sponsorship in entertainment history. In 1977 BASCA Director Mike Batt devised the current format, moving the event to the Grosvenor House and featuring an audio-visual presentation to accompany each award. Tony Hatch hosted that event after which Mike Smith did the honours until 1988 when Paul Gambaccini took over the role in which he’s excelled for a quarter of a century, apart from 1991 when Paul did the voiceover and Tim Rice presented the show. For many years the script was written and voiced by Tim Blackmore with visuals produced (as they still are) by Derek Healey. The voiceover is currently written by Mark Fishlock and delivered by Tom Robinson.

Over the years The Ivors have seen many changes but their ethos remains the same; British and Irish composers judged, without fear or favour, by their peers. So every year at this time I tip my hat to all the people named above, especially Mr. Maschwitz because, as long as The Ivors exist, these far from “foolish things” will remind me of him.

PRS for Music PRS for Music has been supporting music creators since 1914. One hundred years ago, against the backdrop of the First World War, PRS for Music was formed with one member: operatic soprano sensation, Liza Lehmann. A century later, it boasts over 100,000 members in the UK, represents two million worldwide and contributes to a music industry worth over £3.5 billion. Emeli Sandé’s debut album, Our Version Of Events, was the biggest selling album of 2012 in the UK, a year in which she also performed at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympics. She followed that by winning a brace of Ivors the following year, when Next to Me scooped both the PRS for Music Most Performed Work and Best Song Musically and Lyrically awards. After a year away from the limelight, she’s now working on a follow-up album for release later this year…

Emeli Sandé How did it feel to be acknowledged by your fellow songwriters at The Ivors last year? It means heaps. Because I was a writer before being an artist, having respect between writers is really important to me. I remember when I saw Amy [Winehouse] winning the same award for Love Is A Losing Game [in 2008], which is one of my favourite songs, so it really felt like a dream come true. Were you ready for the success of Our Version Of Events? No, I wasn’t ready at all! I wrote an album I really loved with people I loved working with and then it was a bit of an explosion. Now that I’ve had this time off, it’s been the first time I’ve really been able to look at the awards and think, “Wow, now I’m out of this crazy storm, that was amazing”. I’m very grateful, but it was very unexpected. Was it important for you to take time off after that success? Absolutely. It got to a point where I was loving doing the shows, but I felt like I wasn’t evolving. I wanted to be in a position where I could live and then come back with something that’s interesting to hear. Being a celebrity has never really been something that I’m comfortable with. What I’m comfortable with is creating and I wanted to be a better musician, so not having the time and space to do that started to really frustrate me. When you sit down to write a song, do you know if it will be for yourself or for someone else? I’ve learned that it’s the one thing you can’t control. As soon as you try and control something, it lessens what it should be. I just write, stuff comes out and then suddenly you think, “Oh, that would be amazing for that movie” or, “That voice would sound amazing on it”. Sometimes I’m singing about a very personal story but usually everything’s open. But if I’m working with another artist, that’s a completely different process. That’s more helping them to say what they want to say. Which songwriters have most inspired you? Carole King, who I met last year. That was really incredible – she’s someone who really knows their craft, she can write for anybody and her songs can be interpreted in so many different ways. I also love Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder… Mainly because they’re storytellers. Being a celebrity was the last of their priorities, it was just about telling these stories and helping people feel less lonely. Is making an album a different process the second time around? It’s different because, the first time, nobody knew me. We were just kids putting out music and it really surprised us what happened. There’s definitely expectation and anticipation, but I really like how it’s sounding. This time, it’s about not focusing on that expectation, because that’s when the best music comes out. I’ve also been working on an EP and I really want to write a musical. And where do your keep your Ivor Novello Awards? They made it to the top of my piano ‘cos that’s where it starts, music and lyrics. I love those two ladies, they’re an inspiration.

Interview John Powell

John Powell is one of the UK’s leading composers of film music, scoring over 50 feature films. He’s also been prolific when it comes to winning Ivors, picking up Best Original Film Score on no less than four occasions; for Shrek (2001), Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006), Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009) and How to Train Your Dragon (2010). The latter also earned him an Oscar nomination, and he’s currently working on the score to the sequel, due out later this year.

John Powell Do you have a favourite of your four wins? Dragons, because I got to go to the ceremony. The one before that (2009), my wife went and got to do a speech. She said, “What am I going to say?” and I said, “I don’t know, just flash them your tits!” But she didn’t, fortunately. The Ivors gives me an umbilical cord back to home. I live in Los Angeles but it’s wonderful to go back and winning just felt like, “They haven’t forgotten me”. What else makes The Ivors important? It’s a phenomenal talent pool that is picking these things. It’s your British peers and that’s a terribly significant group when it comes to music within the world. It’s a very pleasant feeling that this private group of people is listening to your work and thinking, “Yeah, that’s pretty good”. What’s the most surreal moment you’ve had while working in Hollywood? There was one moment on Hancock with the director Peter Berg, who is great fun – he encourages you the way he would encourage an American football team. He saw a piece of music on my piano called The Lark Ascending. I was trying to get the end right, where Will Smith’s character was in this big running, jumping and flying scene. Peter was going, “Come on John, give me some of that fucking lark ascending!” as if I was about to throw a 50-yarder! Is there a score that’s particularly inspired your work? There’s one moment I always use as the perfection of arranging skills and musical invention; Barn-Raising Dance from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It has such growth to it. It seems to be getting faster and changing up keys the whole time but, of course, it isn’t. It’s these arrangement tricks and orchestration tricks that allow the whole thing to build and build continuously.

Were you always destined to compose film music or could you have ended up doing something else entirely? I’m not sure I was really heading for film. I wanted to write and make music, but didn’t know how. Coming out of college and not having any money, when given the opportunity to write jingles, you think, “This is fantastic”. Those lead to short films and, before you know it, you’re heading in a certain direction. I’ve got to a place with the films I’ve done where it’s been very exciting. But, ultimately, I am trying to get back to writing music just for music’s sake. So what’s next? I’m writing an oratorio. I’ll probably try and record it at the end of this year and perform it next year. It’s a First World War requiem, about one of the characters in the Kaiser’s army. I did want to perform it for the centenary of the [start of the] war, but the thing about the concert world is, you have to prepare years in advance. As long as I get it done by 2018, I’m OK! And where do you keep your Ivor Novello Awards? I’ve spread them all over the house. There’s one on a mantelpiece, one in the bedroom, one in the bathroom and one is in my son’s bedroom. Just to remind him that, if he doesn’t get to see me, there might be a fairly good reason why.

“The one thing that always stood out to me was a good song.”

Plan B – aka Ben Drew – scored a rare hat-trick at The Ivors in 2011, picking up Songwriter of the Year, the Album Award for The Defamation Of Strickland Banks and the PRS for Music Most Performed Work for She Said. He was nominated again in 2013 for Ill Manors (Best Contemporary Song and Best Original Film Score), which marked his return to hip-hop music after the soul sounds of Strickland Banks. He’s now also a successful actor, runs his own publishing company (Temperamental Music), and is working on his fourth album.

Ben Drew How did it feel to win three Ivors in 2011? I felt I was overlooked for a long time, not by The Ivors but by everyone, so that made up for the years of hard work I put into music without being recognised. The judges are your peers, which gives it integrity. It’s my proudest achievement. What are your memories of that year’s ceremony? I’d flown back from America so I remember being exhausted! America was difficult as well, I’d come back feeling a bit dejected and then I won an Ivor, then I won another and then a third one… it made up for all that stuff. We had drinks afterwards but I had to get on a plane and go back to work. That’s the one thing I regret from all the success: I couldn’t take my foot off the gas. I’ve got the Ivors here, I know they’re real, but it would’ve been nice to let it soak in and enjoy it a bit more. Was fame different to how you’d imagined? No, I was pretty accurate with the whole Strickland Banks concept. You work hard and, through that talent, you get fame and get put on a pedestal and then, when you’re there, people want to knock you off. Maybe the Strickland Banks album is a really dark depiction of the ugly side of fame, but it’s still a reality. You’ve worked in several different genres. Do you know when you sit down to write that it’ll be a hip-hop song or a soul song? It’s like when you’re hungry, “What do I feel like eating today?” Because I’m versatile and understand different genres, it can be, “I want to make hip-hop music today” or “I want to make a soul song”. I’m in the studio at the minute and I’m doing songs that sound like indie rock songs, folk songs, reggae, hip-hop, dance music, I’m just going in there and letting the creativity flow. Will that be for your next album? I guess so. I’m collaborating with my band members. I feel like the next album may not be a Plan B album, it may be a collaborative album under a different name. But we’ll see what happens.

Which songwriters have inspired you? One song can inspire me to write ten. Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car, Eric Clapton’s Tears in Heaven – any music that can bring a tear to my eye or put me in a really deep place is the stuff that inspired me. As a kid, I went from stuff like Nirvana and then listened to The Prodigy and underground jungle music. I was like a nomad, jumping from one thing to the next. But the one thing that always stood out to me was a good song. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? I’d started writing song ideas but never had anything finished. My godfather, Keith Coggins, taught me the structure of The Tracks of My Tears by Smokey Robinson. He said, “Once you master that structure, you can start messing around”. As soon as he taught me that, I was writing and finishing songs. Suddenly I could do gigs, I had a manager, record labels were sniffing round… That piece of advice was what really set me off.
