BASCA Welcome As the new Chairman of BASCA, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 58th Ivor Novello Awards.

These awards are the most coveted in our business for good reason. The Ivors celebrate the most important and magical part of music making: the creation of the song or score.

They are judged by our peers which gives them special significance. Only someone who has spent long hours crafting an idea into a tangible form can truly understand how special it is to write a great song or score that can mean so much to so many people.

We celebrate too the nominees and winners’ contribution to the economy and culture of this country. Music has no boundaries and their creations are exported all over the world bringing great fiscal and cultural worth to the UK. I hope you enjoy today as much as I always do. It’s a great day and an honour for BASCA to be able to show how we all appreciate and respect our fellow songwriters and composers, not just those who are nominated today, but also those whose Ivor is yet to come.

A Year in the Life of BASCA

A Year in the Life of BASCA BASCA’s far-reaching remit is driven by the community of songwriters and composers that sits on our boards and while The Ivors are perhaps the most high-profile part of BASCA’s public face, it is far from being all we do.

First and foremost, we are very excited to have a new Chairman, Simon Darlow, and Executive Director – Vick Bain (no doubt familiar faces to many of you in this room) on board.

Together, Darlow and Bain are carving out a new vision for our organisation, a vision that means adapting to further meet the demands of the digital age; welcoming new friends and reaching out to those who are just starting their careers; harmonising the voices that strive to protect the value of copyright and of course, continuing to celebrate excellence through our prestigious award shows. If in the past we had an older reputation, we are dusting ourselves down and trying to ensure that all generations can reap the rewards of our valuable work.

BASCA’s efforts as a membership organisation take place in myriad arenas: work amongst our membership, work in the wider music business and perhaps the most influential: lobbying and advising of political figures and policy makers, both in the UK and across the EU via our pivotal role within the European Composer and Songwriter Alliance (ECSA).

In 2012, we launched a new (and hugely successful) Professional Business Development Programme aimed at supporting members. These events featured BASCA member panellists, including Ivor Novello Award-winning Wallace and Gromit composer, Julian Nott; founder of Xenomania, Brian Higgins; and music producer, best known for his work with Ed Sheeran, Jake Gosling. BASCA also hosted The Ivors Masterclass series in association with the British Music Experience at the O2 in Greenwich with members John Rutter, George Fenton, Don Black, Eg White and David Gray. Meanwhile, we took our Song Critiques around the country via our affiliation with some of the UK’s leading educational institutions through our Academic Supporter program.

In the wider world, we continued to strive to alter the perception of music’s value – by adding our voice to the lobby against the government’s plans at bringing in copyright exceptions without fair compensation, or by inviting Google into our board meetings to stress how our membership deserves to earn a living from their work. We are also joining forces with the Music Producers Guild to assist with the “Credit Where Credit Is Due Campaign” in order that our writers, and their publishers, are visibly credited online for the songs and compositions they write.

We also intend to build on our key relationships with our UK Music colleagues including our good friends and neighbours PRS For Music and the Music Publishers Association. We are part of one big ecosystem and our collective voice is our strength.

The Ivors Committee Noël Coward’s famous line “extraordinary how potent cheap music is” popped into my head when, while chairing one of this year’s song categories, I suddenly noticed that one of my fellow judges had tears in her eyes. At first I wondered if I had upset her in some way, but this talented young singer-songwriter, herself a former Ivor nominee, had simply been moved to tears by the beauty of a song.

The purity of that emotion helped me to hear the song with new ears and I changed my vote accordingly - it is one of today’s nominees.

I have never wept within the first few minutes of a book, a play or a movie, but the ability to reach the heart within a matter of seconds is one of the things that makes songs so special. When my passion for music no longer makes me cry then I’ll know it’s time to leave The Ivors Committee.

It is that passion that BASCA attempts to harness - it is that passion that makes The Ivors so special.

This year, alongside a panel of major songwriters and a prominent musicologist, I spent two days sifting through about 60 songs and, after much debate, we chose a winner and two runners-up which we believe produce a musical snapshot of 2012.

If our decisions don’t suit everybody it certainly isn’t for want of caring, but in the end, as Ricky Nelson wrote, “You can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself ”.

“That’s what I really love about working with good directors; being part of someone else’s vision and enhancing that.”

Composer Martin Phipps has won the Best Television Soundtrack Ivor Novello Award on three separate occasions, for his scores for The Virgin Queen (2006), Oliver Twist (2007) and The Shadow Line (2011).

He’s currently working on the music for a forthcoming BBC2 series about 1920s gangland Birmingham called Peaky Blinders, moving into a new East London studio and setting up a new venture called Mearl, aimed at developing more leftfield soundtracks and collaborations with other artists.

Martin Phipps Which one of your three wins was the most significant for you?

The first one, just because it was the first one. Coming from a film and TV background I didn’t really know about The Ivors, it wasn’t my world. I didn’t know I had to make a speech, I didn’t have any idea how big and prestigious it was or just how much talent there was in the room.

So I was absolutely, totally shitting myself for an hour beforehand when it dawned on me what exactly was involved! I probably enjoyed winning the last one most. The whole experience of The Shadow Line was great, so it felt like the icing on the cake to win.

How do they compare to other award shows?

I can only really compare it to the TV and film awards and it feels much more of a genuine recognition of what’s good. The music is genuinely valued on its own merits, whereas the music Oscar and often the music BAFTA are won by things which are very mediocre scores, mentioning no names of course, but are attached to successful projects. But the people judging The Ivors have none of that preconception, everyone’s got an equal place at the table. And people drink more as well!

What are your all-time favourite scores?

The two scores I wish I’d written are Ennio Morricone’s The Mission and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ The Social Network. Both, in completely different ways, capture the emotional power and drive of their narratives.

What’s the hardest thing about telling a story through music?

To be honest, I don’t find it hard. I don’t mean to sound over-confident, but the easy bit is engaging in the picture and that shows me the journey. I have the most admiration for people who write music in no context, purely from the recesses of their mind. Whereas I have a vision to be part of – that’s what I really love about working with good directors; being part of someone else’s vision and enhancing that.

You actually studied drama at university, didn’t you?

I didn’t want to do music: I didn’t see the point, really it was all about playing it. In those days, you didn’t have to pay your fees and support yourself to quite the same extent so it was like, “I want to go to college, but I don’t know what I want to do” – so I did drama. But actually it was great, ‘cos I was so shit at acting that I said, “I’ll do the music for the plays”! I was in bands at the time and suddenly I didn’t have to deal with any egos, I could construct this thing myself. It was a real moment of “That’s what I want to do”.

Has that drama background helped when it comes to composing scores?

Probably, in terms of understanding character, seeing the shape of a dramatic narrative and understanding how an audience reacts to something. But please shoot me if I ever think of acting again!

And what do you like to do away from music?

I like climbing mountains, something scary that makes me think about nothing else apart from the moment that I’m in. There’s nothing quite like being high up to make you concentrate!

“What I really care about is my writing.”

Lily Allen – as she was known then – won a hat-trick of Ivor Novello Awards in 2010. Together with songwriting partner Greg Kurstin, she picked up the Songwriters of the Year prize, plus Best Song Musically and Lyrically and PRS for Music Most Performed Work for The Fear. After a few years away from singing, she’s currently working on her third album while bringing up her two young children and running her record label, In The Name Of.

Lily Rose Cooper What are your memories of The Ivors in 2010?

It was all a bit of a blur to be honest. I was so overwhelmed I just drank a lot! The Ivors was one of the first award ceremonies that I got taken to by my publishers when they signed me – before I went to anything like the BRIT Awards. I remember feeling like I shouldn’t be there with all the amazing people in the room – I felt like a bit of a fraud, I suppose. So to go back three or four years later and win three awards was just mindblowing.

You gave quite an emotional speech that day…

Yeah. I did feel lost at that particular time within the music industry; so much of it is about how you look, what dress you’re wearing and all that rubbish. And, while I do care about all that in some ways, what I really care about is my writing. To be recognised for that did suddenly make me feel like, “Ah, it doesn’t matter that I’m short and dumpy and wear stupid clothes sometimes. What matters is that these people who also write songs think that I’m alright at it”.

Do you enjoy the collaborative element of songwriting?

I couldn’t do it without other people to be honest. I don’t have the musical capabilities and I really need to have that other person in the room, to bounce ideas off, and also to read their facial expressions when I sing something stupid. There have definitely been raised eyebrows at certain lyrics and I’ve gone “I’ll just redo that one! I’ll find another rhyme!”

Greg [Kurstin] is not easily shocked either, so they must have been bad!

Who are your main songwriting influences?

From a storytelling point of view, Bob Dylan and Mike Skinner would be two people that I’m – not influenced by – but inspired by. In terms of influence, I tend to reference whole genres rather than actual artists. When it comes to making my music I think, “Let’s make a disco-sounding record today, or a country-sounding record”, it’s not, “Let’s do Jerry Lee Lewis or Johnny Cash”.

Has becoming a parent changed your approach to songwriting?

So much of what I do is social observation and came from conversations I’d have with people at 4 o’clock in the morning on a big night out. Now, the only conversations I have are with two human beings that actually can’t even talk back! So I’m definitely trying to find inspiration from somewhere else.

Are you working with Greg again on the new album?

I have done, but logistically it’s quite difficult ‘cos he’s got two young kids and so do I; he lives in LA and I live in London or Gloucestershire. We’re going to try and put more time in in New York, meet halfway.

And how’s the new album coming together?

Pretty good. If all goes well I could have it out by Christmas. Or it might take a bit longer than that. But let’s not talk about that! It’ll be ready when it’s ready.

“What I really care about is my writing.”

Lily Allen – as she was known then – won a hat-trick of Ivor Novello Awards in 2010. Together with songwriting partner Greg Kurstin, she picked up the Songwriters of the Year prize, plus Best Song Musically and Lyrically and PRS for Music Most Performed Work for The Fear. After a few years away from singing, she’s currently working on her third album while bringing up her two young children and running her record label, In The Name Of.

Lily Rose Cooper What are your memories of The Ivors in 2010?

It was all a bit of a blur to be honest. I was so overwhelmed I just drank a lot! The Ivors was one of the first award ceremonies that I got taken to by my publishers when they signed me – before I went to anything like the BRIT Awards. I remember feeling like I shouldn’t be there with all the amazing people in the room – I felt like a bit of a fraud, I suppose. So to go back three or four years later and win three awards was just mindblowing.

You gave quite an emotional speech that day…

“There’s always an element of spontaneity in my writing but my first drafts are nearly always a pile of toss.”

With two Ivor Novello Awards on elbow’s mantelpiece (the band won Best Contemporary Song and Best Song Musically and Lyrically for the singles Grounds for Divorce and One Day Like This in 2009) and having previously taken part on a judging panel, Guy Garvey is almost an Ivors veteran.

The much-loved and well-respected singer talks here about his inspirations and what 2013 means for him musically.

Guy Garvey What are your memories of the 2009 Ivor Novello Awards and what does winning an Ivor mean to you?

Apart from being the best statue in the music trophy world, winning an Ivor is the approval of your peers, it’s the approval of people who make music and so we were incredibly proud when we won a second one a few minutes later – I nearly lost a button on my shirt. We had a great party afterwards as well.

Do you feel The Ivors is different to other award ceremonies?

The heritage of the award makes it feel really special and having been on an Ivor’s panel for the Album Award in 2008, I know exactly how much time, care and deliberation is put in to decide who wins.

Were you ready for the huge success of The Seldom Seen Kid? The band were used to the level we reached on previous records, so nothing could have prepared us for how well Seldom did. The fact that it was the record that was dedicated to our dear friend Bryan Glancy made it even more special for us. We’ve always been proud that we ever made a living doing the thing we love but the loveliest thing about the success of the The Seldom Seen Kid was the unanimous congratulations from the British music press.

Everybody seemed genuinely happy for us. Very touching.

Which songwriters most inspired you when you started writing?

I’ve always been a huge fan of the lyrics of Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and John Lennon. Musically, the whole trip-hop scene and everything that came out of Bristol in the 90s really influenced elbow, which made it incredibly satisfying when Rob Del Naja from Massive Attack asked me to contribute some of the songs on Heligoland. Talk Talk are probably the biggest influence musically on the band.

Is your songwriting mostly instinctive?

There’s always an element of spontaneity in my writing but my first drafts are nearly always a pile of toss, it takes me ages and loads of drafts to get the lyrics up to the standard that my colleagues in elbow demand. They all have t-shirts with ‘not good enough’ written on them and they stand around me tutting until it’s right.

What are you currently working on and what are your goals for the rest of the year?

I’ve collaborated with Rob Del Naja and Marius de Vries on songs for King Kong the Musical, I found it surprisingly easy and I really enjoyed the experience. And elbow are always writing the next record. We are just about to spend some time at Peter Gabriel’s Real World which is still the best residential studio in the land. The writing we do there we would never do at home, there’s so much to be said for beautiful purpose built rooms. Home recording is a joy and affordable for all but places like Real World allow you to almost live inside your record.
