It is always a thrill for me, on behalf of BASCA – creators and hosts of The Ivors – to be the first to welcome you to our annual celebration of songwriting and composing.

So here we are for the 57th Ivor Novello Awards which will have its own particular and memorable hallmarks, as each year does.

All of us, as we experience this unique event, gather our own special memories and enjoy that personal connection which imbues The Ivors and the achievements it awards, with a sense of belonging and delight in the joyful recognition of star quality.

There is perhaps one star who for quite some time now, and in a different way from all others, has shone in The Ivors constellation and I am speaking, of course, of Paul Gambaccini.

In so many ways, Paul has become synonymous with The Ivors - as host, as champion, as cognoscente, almost as icon - and indeed, were it not for the fact that we already have a very elegant statuette, we might even have cast him in bronze!

Gary Osborne “It is the best of all trades, to make songs, and the second best to sing them”. So said Hilaire Belloc, and the respect and affection we feel for The Ivors proves that those sentiments aren’t just Belloc’s.

My first encounter with The Ivors came one afternoon in 1959 when my mother went back on a promise to take me to the park because she and my father had to go to a swanky “do” where Dad had been nominated for something called an Ivor Novello Award. He went on to be nominated four times, winning twice. Throughout my youth Dad’s Ivors were just about the most precious possessions in the Osborne household.

During the 70’s and 80’s I attended The Ivors several times with Elton, who always supports the event when he’s in town, however one ceremony I missed was in 1979 when I myself won an Ivor (but that’s another story). Unfortunately by the time I received it, 32 years later, my dad was no longer around to appreciate the fact that he and I are the only father and son to have won Ivors.

Our three award ceremonies and their celebration of those who write music are very important to BASCA. To judge by the people who have gathered in the Great Room today they are also important to members of our community – be they writers, music publishers, managers, and lawyers, accountants, collecting societies or record companies. The Ivors are perhaps the most high profile part of BASCA’s public face but are far from being all that we do.

At its heart BASCA is a membership organisation and our members drive everything that we do and all for which we stand. Our members come from all genres of composing and songwriting and, as a professional association, it is their interests we are here to protect and advance.

BASCA is incredibly proud of The Ivors and of all the songwriters and composers who are honoured at the awards. We are proud of the fact that we have been presenting The Ivors for the past 57 years. We are equally proud of our other award ceremonies, the British Composer Awards (which celebrate their 10th anniversary this year) and the Gold Badge Awards, which will be presented this October for the 39th time and which recognise those who have made a special contribution to the careers of music creators – often from behind the scenes.

However there is something that underlies these skills and underpins their economic and social value: copyright.

Unless you have been living in a cave

for the last few years you will realise that copyright has been the whipping boy of successive governments: reviews by the last Labour administration and the current Coalition government have put it in the spotlight and both apparently started from the premise that it was a roadblock to digital growth rather than seeing it as the enabler of creativity that BASCA and its friends believe it to be. With our friends in the industry (especially PRS for Music and the MPA) we spend a large amount of time and resource putting the case for copyright. Much of this work is done at home through UK Music and in Europe through the European Composer and Songwriter Alliance (ECSA).

At the same time that we campaign for the rights of our members BASCA also tries to ensure that its members know exactly what rights they have and what is happening in the music industry and in the wider political and business world which may affect these rights. This continual process of informing and educating are core activities for BASCA and, as with our campaigning, we spend a lot of time and money in trying to ensure that we deliver them to our members in the most effective and enjoyable way.

Finally, in the same way that The Ivors are about the music community recognising outstanding achievement,

BASCA is also founded on a concept of community. This pervades all that we do: our social events where members can exchange experiences, discuss problems and talk about issues and our campaigning where a united voice is louder and stronger than a lone voice. Many Ivor winners have said that the reason the award means so much to them is because it comes from their peers, from their own community and it is that which makes it so special.

BASCA welcomes you all to The Ivors and congratulates all of the nominees. We hope that you will enjoy the day and will want to find out more about our community of composers and songwriters.

What is it like to share a stage with the finest songwriters and composers in the business? Few of us will ever know, but for Paul Gambaccini, it has become something of a regular occurrence. The man with the smooth mid-Atlantic accent and encyclopaedic knowledge of pop and rock is this year celebrating a quarter of a century presenting The Ivor Novello Awards.

“Among modern artists, this kind of collaboration is an increasingly common phenomenon”, he says.

“The Beatles made writing your own material de rigueur for rock bands, but in recent years we’ve seen the re-emergence of professional songwriters who write for more than one artist.

“Look at Eg White, who was named Songwriter of the Year [in 2009]. And if you consider an artist like Adele – she is the main writer on her album but she has important co-writers.

I also love that one of the recent winners of the Special International Award was Diane Warren. She has never been an artist – but she is the go-to woman on the [US] west coast.”

“You could say I have had the honour of being with the world’s greatest songwriters and composers at their happiest moments,” he says.

“Whether it’s on stage or sharing off-mic moments, it has been a very rich experience.”

What have been his most memorable moments down the years? “Well, that’s a hard one. I loved it when Lou Reed accepted the Special International Award [in 2005]. He thanked the British people and was amazed by their support.

He said, “I couldn’t get arrested in New York… well, I was arrested but that was for something else!”

“It might not seem like a big thing but I think it’s so important that co-writers win prizes at The Ivors,” he says. “I find it fascinating when two people go

“The Ivor winners are not journeymen,” he says. “They add something that hasn’t been added before. They give something that we already know a personal twist and, importantly, they make it feel that no one has been doing this before.”

As he prepares for a very special 25th year on stage, he is buoyant about the health of The Ivor Novello Awards.

“This is almost the one award that’s guaranteed to still be going,” he says.

“The way we consume music is changing but content is still king.

Regardless of how we hear it or get it, we will need these people as much in 25 years as we do now.”

Coming back to this year’s awards, he is looking forward to meeting one nominee in particular.

Interview | Labrinth

Labrinth London-born Timothy McKenzie, aka Labrinth, won last year’s Ivor for Best Contemporary Song with rapper Tinie Tempah. He co-wrote and produced Tinie’s debut single Pass Out, which reached No. 1 in the UK singles chart. After finding success as a writer and producer – he began producing aged just 15 – in 2010, Labrinth became the first non talent show signing to Simon Cowell’s record label Syco in six years. He released his debut album Electronic Earth earlier in April 2012.

What do you remember about winning last year with Pass Out? I remember that I was nervous as fuck! It was weird, getting an Ivor Novello Award for something classed as a UK urban record. Obviously Dizzee Rascal also won [The Ivors Inspiration Award] that year, but I didn’t think we were going to get it. So yeah, it was really nice to be recognised.

Was there anything special about winning an Ivor in particular?

Definitely. The Ivors are one of the most important awards in the world. As a writer and producer, it was an honour to receive it. It’s good because The Ivors are not about how many records you’ve sold, they’re about craftsmanship. I actually didn’t get recognised too much on Pass Out, which makes sense – a lot of people who listen to the record just think Tinie, Tinie, Tinie. But I was up for nights on that record making sure everything was tight.

Were you cautious about joining Syco?

It was very important that I had my own say. But in terms of business, I’m a minor. I know a lot about creating music, but not business. So it was a balance of talking to the label, making sure I have what I need, and they have what they need. I want to appeal to the masses – that’s my approach, but musical integrity is more important to me than anything else.

How happy are you to have finished your debut album?

Most writers are not happy with their works, that’s me all the time. Also, as a writer I’m a baby – I don’t know anything. When I think I do know everything then I won’t have a career. So I’m out there learning all the time.

Electronic Earth was a great learning experience for me I’ve never finished an album before, and I finally got there.

Were your family proud?

Ha ha, my family are the coolest guys in the business, so they don’t care much for all that excitement and stuff.

My mum was actually almost not going to come, but she did. It’s The Ivors.

How has being a producer helped your songwriting?

It has taught me loads. As a producer you listen to so many different artists that you’re always finding details that you didn’t notice before. Just listening to albums, like Radiohead’s OK Computer, lots by David Bowie, Purple Rain – they really helped me to figure out where I want to sit.

Do you remember your acceptance speech?

I think I said that hopefully Simon (Cowell) can put out a credible album finally. There had been a lot of slating of Syco at the time – they’d just finished the Susan Boyle album and a lot of manufactured pop covers. I said, “Well, I’m on this label now.”

Do you find writing tougher than producing?

It’s definitely very hard. As a producer, it’s easy to tell an artist that something will work or not – you can lay down the facts. As an artist, you have to go inside yourself. I had a lot of internal battles – lots of arguments in my head. I really had to learn how to balance myself.

Interview | Natasha Khan

Natasha Khan Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Natasha Khan, better known as Bat for Lashes, won the 2009 Ivor for Best Contemporary Song with Daniel. Following her 2006 debut album Fur and Gold, she released her second album, Two Suns, in 2009 – reaching number five on the UK Album Chart. She is currently writing/recording her third album.

What do you remember most from The Ivors?

I remember arriving a few hours before the ceremony and realising I’d left my special dress in a Brighton cab! I managed to cobble something together, but I was gutted!

I also remember Johnny Marr being a very nice man.

How do The Ivors feel different to other awards?

I think the fact that they’re not filmed makes the ceremony feel less of a circus, and more about music’s real contributors. I liked how there was such an eclectic mix of people in the room when I attended.

Do you remember what you said in your acceptance speech?

I remember talking about writing Daniel in my pyjamas with a cup of tea in bed! I was so nervous, I’m surprised I managed to say anything!

How special was it that you won the award for Daniel?

I was so, so thrilled, because I received the award for Best Contemporary Song, which I’m told is voted for by songwriters. I saw my name up on the screen as sole songwriter – I thought, little me did that! It’s not often you feel it’s acceptable to be that chuffed with yourself!

How easy did you find it to write that song?

They say all the best ones happen in five minutes, which was the case with Daniel (with the help of a good pair of pyjamas!) I wrote it on a little sequencer, starting with the bass line, some horns, then added a choral part for the choruses. When I started to form the melody I remember experiencing that great sense of elation you get when you feel like you’ve captured true contentment for a split second.

Which songwriters most inspired you when you started writing?

I loved Joni Mitchell’s Blue album and Lou Reed’s Berlin.

Kurt Cobain’s simple melodies sounded like kids’ playground songs. I loved Kate Bush’s The Ninth Wave – I remember being 12 and putting it on in the dark to scare myself. I remember hearing Jóga by Björk for the first time and having to bend my ears around being able to understand what was happening with the melody and timing. All of these artists, and many more, were like the best group of teachers that taught me at a music school in my mind.

Is your songwriting mostly instinctive?

I think it is, but I am learning new things all the time. I find it scary to be challenged, but try to push myself out of my comfort zone. I don’t often use conventional chord structures, and I used to feel bad that I didn’t know about the right chord progressions. But I’ve realised that sometimes your biggest weakness turns out to be your biggest strength. I’ve realised I’m developing my style.

I always try to follow what honestly wants to come out.

I never censor myself in the writing process – the inner critic isn’t welcome in those magic moments, because I know it will be knocking down the door once I’m finished!

Production and writing go hand in hand for me. Often I use strange sounds as the base of a song, and the atmosphere denotes how it turns out. Otherwise I write on the piano. I have recently been reading lots of old romantic English poems - I’m interested in bringing back themes that aren’t perhaps fashionable in lyric writing nowadays, like the wonder of nature.

Dan Jones Dan Jones is a double Ivor-winning composer and sound designer working in film, TV and theatre.

He won his first Ivor in 2004 for the soundtrack to director Menno Mayjes’ movie, Max, starring John Cusack. More recently he composed the music for Channel 4’s Any Human Heart, which won him the Ivor for Best Television Soundtrack for 2010. Away from film and TV, he is a founding member and co-artistic director of the Sound and Fury Theatre Company, whose productions pioneer the immersive use of experimental sound design.

What do you remember about winning your first Ivor in 2004?

It was a great honour and an extraordinary day. People assume you must know about winning beforehand but I had no idea – it was a very well kept secret. So I was amazed. At The Ivors, you realise how much incredible talent there is in the room. To think that your fellow composers and songwriters have had an input into the decision, it makes you feel like you must be doing something right.

Is that what makes The Ivors special?

Definitely. There are dangers that other awards can actually be a celebration of things around the work, like an artist’s image. With film writing it can be especially difficult for people without industry insight to understand what the music is contributing to a film. So it’s very flattering to be recognised by your peers.

Did you enjoy writing the film score for Max? It was a great challenge, as the film is about a very sensitive subject. It looks at Hitler when he was a painter.

The director cleverly pressed pause at that time in history and asked how an artist – someone with some sensitivity – could turn into the world’s worst tyrant. He wanted to tell that story and not become a slave to what we knew was about to unfold in history. That was true for the music too, which meant I was in the strange position of writing quite light-hearted music to one of the world’s worst villains.

But that was necessary because it had to be genuine. The point about any of the scores I write is there has to be a genuine commitment to understand the characters and where they’re coming from, whoever they are.

How did winning the Ivor affect your career?

It is a fantastic confidence boost of course. But Galileo said that self-doubt is the father of invention. So, while you have to wear the award with complete pride and honour, you have to remember to keep self-questioning and examining. Bizarrely, I think getting a big award like that actually pulls you back to thinking even harder about what you can do to up your game. You’re thinking, let’s not drop the ball now.

What was it like writing the music for Any Human Heart?

That was a hugely exciting and daunting project. The music had to embrace not only the vast nature of the story but also many of the extreme ‘close-ups’ into the characters. Getting the music to be both epic and also intimate and personal was a real challenge, but such a wonderful, passionate story was a real gift for a composer.

Have you always loved writing for narrative?

Yes, what pushed me into music writing in the first place was helping to tell stories. I love to think that music helps audiences and characters to get into the same room. It builds a bridge, which is very important. I almost feel that it’s a retrospective collaboration with the actors.

And that of course only works through the director, the cameraman and everyone else involved. We’re all trying to give the audience the best possible insight into a character. I think the world needs that now more than ever. Anything that we can do to help people see what it’d be like to see the world from someone else’s point of view is an important activity. Music can help to do that.

Jazzie B Founding member of the Soul II Soul collective, Jazzie B OBE was the inaugural recipient of The Ivors Inspiration Award in 2008. The pioneering British DJ, music producer, and entrepreneur first began gigging in London in the late 1970s and co-founded Soul II Soul in 1982. Guided by the philosophy ‘A happy face, a thumpin’ bass, for a lovin’ race’, their hits included Keep On Movin’ and Back To Life. Today, the collective has sold over 6.8 million albums in over 35 territories worldwide.

What are your recollections of receiving The Ivors Inspiration Award?

I remember being in quite a fluster getting ready to go.

Soul II Soul never got any awards or acclaim in England on that sort of level before, so The Ivors was special.

The Ivors are revered highly around the world and I was pretty gobsmacked to be honoured in that way. Funny, it was also the year that I got an OBE – you wait ages for a bus to come along and then two come at once.

You were recognised for inspiration – are you aware of the artists you’ve inspired?

What’s interesting is that the success of Soul II Soul came 20 years ago, so now the tornado has died down, I’ve had time to look back and reflect, and see what it’s meant to other people. You’re in a position where you can look at your work from another perspective and see how it has had an impact.

Do you mind being asked about the Eighties?

No, but it does make you feel prehistoric! You have to think we came from a time that was pre-digital, in that transient time between analogue and digital. We’ve gone from there to today, where people are making music in their bedrooms.

What things do you miss from the early days?

Our outlet was the club world as it made sense musically.

Now you hear about new bands and artists all over the world, and that’s down to the evolution of technology.

It’s a different energy, but the vibe is still the same. There is a lot more music out there today [than there was], but there has always been rubbish and the cream has always

risen to the top. Now it’s a bit sad to see how segregated music has become. I miss the days of Top of the Pops, when we paid homage to a chart.

Do artists have it easier today?

No, things just evolve. I DJ’d with someone for the first time recently who was using a USB stick. I was watching this guy doing his thing and I was thinking how I used to have to carry crates of records around London – and now he’s carrying a little chip.

What has been Soul II Soul’s biggest contribution to music?

I’m proud to be a part of black music being a popular choice. Some people said the first time they knew black people lived in Britain was when Soul II Soul came along.

Soul II Soul had guys like Quincy Jones to thank for exposing the music before us. After us, you have someone like Dizzee Rascal, who is just himself, indigenous to where he grew up, and he’s not questioned about black or white. And now Dizzee has left a gap in the door for other great artists, like Labrinth. Now urban music is recognised across the board.

After winning so many awards around the world, does The Ivors still feel special?

The Ivors is not a joke, it’s a serious thing, and it’s something that I don’t take for granted. I remember being at [Ivors] ceremonies before, thinking maybe one day that will happen for me. It’s remarkable and there’s a real sense of wellbeing and belonging that an institution like The Ivors would take the time to recognise what Soul II Soul managed to do. It definitely holds a special place in my heart.
