Gary Osborne In case you’re wondering who the two elderly ladies in this picture are, that’s me on the left presenting an Ivor to Hazel Whiskerd who created the statuette in the first place.

56 years ago, when she was a young art student, Hazel won a competition to design a new award named after the superstar songwriter Ivor Novello.

What she came up with was a solid bronze depiction of Euterpe, the muse of poetry and song. Her prize was £50.

The Ivor is one of the most beautiful and valuable of all awards and between 1956 and 2010 we have presented 1,130 of them to illustrious composers, plus almost as many again to industrious publishers.

However, one person who has never possessed a copy of this famous statuette is the lady who created it, until now that is.

Now in her 80’s, Hazel lives with her artist husband John in a beautiful cottage hidden in the heart of the Forest of Dean. My Satnav and I recently had the pleasure of visiting them there to present Hazel with an Ivor of her own.

Apart from designing Euterpe, Hazel Whiskerd’s only connection with the world of music is that her nephew is singer-songwriter Al Stewart.

Sadly Al has not yet received an Ivor, but from now on, when he wants to take a good look at what he’s missing ... all he has to do is visit his Auntie.

As a celebration of songwriting and composing, The Ivors are unsurpassed and we are incredibly proud of that achievement.

What’s more, the resources generated by the awards enable us to continue our work throughout the year.

So, what does BASCA do? Our aims are to campaign for writers’ rights, foster community among music writers and to celebrate the work of writers with events like The Ivors.

The past year has been another busy one for BASCA in Europe. Through the European Composer and Songwriter Alliance (ECSA), which includes organisations representing writers from 28 countries, we have continued to ensure that the voice of the writer is heard by members of the European Commission and Parliament, as well as seminars and conferences across the continent.

ECSA speaks in support of the collective management of authors’ rights and is active in trying to foster changes that will improve the efficiency and transparency of such management.

Recently ECSA was invited to join the Working Group on the Global Repertoire Database, a potentially vital tool in the management of rights in the digital future.

Celebrate The Ivors is about celebration and for the past 56 years, it has given songwriters the opportunity to award their peers. Through The Ivors, we aim to raise the profile of the craft of songwriting and to celebrate excellence.

Throughout the year, BASCA celebrates those talented individuals whose work (often behind the scenes) helps to support the careers of composers and songwriters at our Gold Badge Awards lunch, which takes place in October. In recent years, Gold Badge awards have been given to singers, managers, producers, lawyers and copyists.

For the past eight years BASCA has

honoured the best in contemporary classical music writing through the British Composer Awards. Presented in November, they recognise a wide variety of modern classical and jazz composition.

Guy Fletcher The Ivors have been presented to the UK’s best songwriters and composers for 56 years and in that time it has become the most important award ceremony in the world for music creators.

I take special pride in this year’s event because, after 10 years as BASCA chairman from 1992, I became PRS chairman this January. And the society’s continuing commitment to The Ivors means a great deal to me.

Over my lengthy membership of PRS I have seen the industry go through many changes. However, there is one constant that will never change; the creative process behind all music begins with an idea and something upon which to write or record it. For this reason, songwriters and composers will always be at the centre of our world. They are an extraordinarily talented group who demonstrate that British music of all genres continues to flourish at home and all over the world.

Central to this initiative is the development of a global repertoire database. We are very pleased that the ICE database, our joint venture with Swedish society STIM, was selected to provide the technology upon which this will be built.

Our aim is to make a step change in the licensing of online service providers, to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the internet.

Paul Gambaccini You would think they were fighting for their reputations. I watch the members of The Ivors Committee as your official observer. I see them fight the good fight for their favourites as if there was something in it for them personally.

There isn’t ... at least, not in terms of traditional awards. But there is a deep satisfaction when a writer thinks justice has been done. When a committee member has successfully presented the case of another writer, all is, at least for a few minutes, right with the world.

At least a couple of men and women on the committee will be glowing with pride when the writers they advocated take to the stage today.

Look around the room for smiles on the faces of committee members.

These will be the people who have not won today themselves, but who have done the next best thing ... made it possible for an esteemed colleague to take home an Ivor.

Joris de Man Joris de Man made history last year by becoming the inaugural winner of the Ivor Novello Award for Best Original Video Game Score, a new category recognising the growing significance and craft of video games composition. His first major games composition and orchestration was for Guerrilla/Sony’s popular Killzone series, which was recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus. It has sold more than two million copies worldwide.

What are your memories of last year’s Ivor Novello Awards?

It was amazing and unexpected. When Dom Joly read out the award, it didn’t quite register. My wife, Sam, was prodding me saying, “It’s you, it’s you.” When I collected the award, I wanted to say something really profound. Instead I said, “Thanks to my wife for supporting me while I’m plonking away in the bedroom.” I was talking about my home studio, but it didn’t really make sense. Still, I got a few laughs.

How did winning the first Ivor for Best Original Video Game Score make a difference to you?

I suddenly got a lot more recognition from outside of the gaming industry. Normally when a games composer speaks to movie producers or TV directors, there can be some hesitance. That’s because games span such a wide range – from Angry Birds on your iPhone to a mega-title like the Harry Potter franchise.

If you ask people what a game is, you’ll get completely different answers. You don’t get that if you ask about pop – it’s either in the hit parade or it isn’t. So it’s harder for people to understand the work involved. But it’s a lot easier if you can say you have won an Ivor Novello Award for your music.

A lot of games music is about big orchestral scores – not the sort of thing that many games players would play on their iPod. That’s true. You’re exposing people who would never normally think about listening to what is basically concert hall music. Some of my work is influenced by [Polish avantgarde composer] Penderetsky – maybe they wouldn’t know who he is, but they accept the music because it’s in a games context.

What’s interesting is that it’s having an effect. In America, they now have a concert called Video Games Live, where orchestras perform the music from games. It has been very successful – the audience spans everyone from young kids to 60-year-olds. That’s great.

You’re known for big sweeping orchestration, but do you like to mix it up?

Definitely. You also need to keep doing different things as a composer, otherwise it’s not interesting for you or the player. Killzone normally has a rousing main menu theme, for example. But for Killzone 3, I wanted to do something different. So I scored the first minute with just a small string orchestra and solo violin. That’s pretty unusual for a big war game featuring space Nazis. It’s not what people are expecting and it works. Someone put it on YouTube and it had 15,000 hits in a couple of days.

What are your earliest musical memories?

My mum played contemporary musical harpsichord, things like Ligeti and Bartók. My earliest memory is of us being put to bed and Ligeti’s Continuum being practised in the background. It’s a hard piece to fall asleep to, but it’s actually very soothing to me. I just need to hear one note of the harpsichord and I’m transported back home.

What will 2011 be about for you?

Diversifying. I’m looking forward to a really interesting musical year. I’m very happy in the games industry and it has been my mainstay. But I want to do more television and film work. It challenges you in different ways especially as the storytelling aspect of music comes to the fore. That’s what really excites me.

Interview | Imogen Heap

Imogen Heap Romford-born singer-songwriter Imogen Heap received the 2010 Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement. She is best known for her work as part of the musical duo Frou Frou and her solo albums, which she writes, produces and mixes.

Following iMegaphone, Speak for Yourself and Ellipse, she has decided to take a radically different approach for her fourth solo album. The concept will be to write and record one track over a two week period every three months - with each song and video being released immediately and when the song is fresh and relevant to her. By the end of 2013, Imogen plans to have completed 12 songs, the equivalent of a studio album.

What are your memories of last year’s Ivors?

It was wonderful for me to be recognised as a songwriter in Britain and receive the award from Annie [Lennox]. I’ve done quite well in the States but it finally felt like there was a real public acknowledgement of my Britishness.

So there was my family and a new life going into this new song, as well as a macro of my other life – everyone from all over the planet. It got me so inspired.

Has it changed things?

Yes, and I think my winning an Ivor Novello Award was also important for my team, my management and the publishers that I’ve worked with over the years. So many people have played such a huge part in the development of my songwriting career. For me to be recognised in the UK means that their work has been recognised too. It was lovely to be able to say thank you – even if I forgot to thank the most important person in my working life, my manager, Mark.

How do you relax away from making music?

Well, if there’s a piano about that is one way I really relax, just improvising. Music has, ever since I can remember, been what I do in my spare time, so has always been my hobby. When I was 17 it became my professional partner.

Tell us about the “crowdsourcing” concept behind your new album For [the first track] Lifeline, I wanted to capture the general consciousness of anything that might have been going on in the world at the time. Fans from all over the planet sent in sounds from different countries. Everything from a dishwasher door to a windscreen. The sounds they sent on the first day inspired the key.

“It was wonderful for me to be recognised as a songwriter.”

My brother’s wife had his first child on that day and he sent me the sound of his daughter’s heartbeat still in his wife’s

What is your big hope for 2011?

To do less in a wasteful way. When you’re making an album, there is so much waste. When you’re panicking about things, you can spend hours doing something that takes you an hour when you’re feeling inspired. So I’m looking to find a way to better manage my time, so I can have breaks.

I’m going to be the most productive I’ve ever been this year, but I’m also going to be the most relaxed and have the most time outside of it as well. That way, when someone next asks me say, if I’d like to produce or write a song for them, I can finally manage it. I’m looking forward to being able to say ‘yes’.

So there was my family and a new life going into this new song, as well as a macro of my other life – everyone from all over the planet. It got me so inspired.

Has it changed things?

Yes, and I think my winning an Ivor Novello Award was also important for my team, my management and the publishers that I’ve worked with over the years. So many people have played such a huge part in the development of my songwriting career. For me to be recognised in the UK means that their work has been recognised too. It was lovely to be able to say thank you – even if I forgot to thank the most important person in my working life, my manager, Mark.

How do you relax away from making music?

Well, if there’s a piano about that is one way I really relax, just improvising. Music has, ever since I can remember, been what I do in my spare time, so has always been my hobby. When I was 17 it became my professional partner.

Tell us about the “crowdsourcing” concept behind your new album For [the first track] Lifeline, I wanted to capture the general consciousness of anything that might have been going on in the world at the time. Fans from all over the planet sent in sounds from different countries. Everything from a dishwasher door to a windscreen. The sounds they sent on the first day inspired the key.

“It was wonderful for me to be recognised as a songwriter.”

My brother’s wife had his first child on that day and he sent me the sound of his daughter’s heartbeat still in his wife’s

What is your big hope for 2011?

To do less in a wasteful way. When you’re making an album, there is so much waste. When you’re panicking about things, you can spend hours doing something that takes you an hour when you’re feeling inspired. So I’m looking to find a way to better manage my time, so I can have breaks.

I’m going to be the most productive I’ve ever been this year, but I’m also going to be the most relaxed and have the most time outside of it as well. That way, when someone next asks me say, if I’d like to produce or write a song for them, I can finally manage it. I’m looking forward to being able to say ‘yes’.

Interview | Trevor Horn

Trevor Horn Trevor Horn, the recipient of the 2010 Ivor for PRS For Music Outstanding Contribution to British Music, is best known for his work as a producer. He has worked with artists including Dollar, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Grace Jones, Robbie Williams and Pet Shop Boys.

Trevor was also co-founder of The Buggles whose biggest hit, Video Killed the Radio Star, was the first music video played on MTV. In 1980, he briefly joined Yes, a group he later returned to as a producer. In 2010, he reformed The Buggles to play their debut live gig, with the proceeds going to London’s Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability.

How special was it to win an Ivor?

It was lovely. I got a CBE earlier this year as well, and it’s always nice to be recognised. And the thing is I’ve not finished yet – I’ve got more things to do, more records to make.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’ve just finished a new Yes album. It is great to work with people who have been playing a long time and whose playing has got better. I used to be in the band so that has put me in a good position – I can shout at people a lot more than normal. It has been a lovely experience working with them.

What made you a songwriter?

My father was a musician. He was a bass player and I became a professional bass player too. The Beatles were my first inspiration – them and Bob Dylan. My father played in swing bands, which is also what I started off on really.

Which artists and bands have you most enjoyed working with?

Generally, you enjoy working with artists that you have a lot of success with because you tend to work with them more than once. I love working with Seal, Anne Dudley, and I’ve always been a big Yes fan. Pet Shop Boys were lovely – all the ones that were successful were pretty much great to work with. And the ones that weren’t, I’m not going to tell you!

As a producer, do you have to be someone who is good at resolving conflicts?

It’s not like that. Being a producer, you’re really in charge of the dream. But it’s not your dream, it’s the artist’s. So your responsibility is to make the artist’s dream into the reality of a record. But that means you’re not in charge – the artist is in charge. You’re working for somebody. It’s a tricky position when you’re going into people’s music, but you work together as a team and it’s something that you can’t do in an hour - you have to be patient and careful.

Of course, you have to solve conflicts and things like that, like how should we do the middle eight – those are the types of conflicts that I’m used to solving.

What music are you listening to at the moment?

I tend to have vague, odd tastes. At the moment I’ve got a load of recordings of Bing Crosby with Al Jolson live.

It was on the radio in the 30s, and that’s my favourite thing at the moment. Al Jolson is like the original pop singer – he is absolutely brilliant. I like to listen to older music a lot.

Do you feel it is important that we are still celebrating music writing as a skill?

As a skill, yes, because everything stems from that. You can have the best voice in the world but if you’re not singing a really great song you won’t be heard. All the best singers need great material and that doesn’t grow on trees.
