At BASCA we understand how vital it is to be alert to a shift of emphasis, to know when there is a new momentum; not for the sake of fashion but to ensure that the art and craft of writing music however it is evolving, is supported, sustained and celebrated.

The Ivors Committee | Gary Osborne

Gary Osborne The Ivors have always been special to me. My father Tony Osborne was nominated four times and I’ll never forget how proud I was when he twice came home with the statuette.

Before he died last year he was one of three surviving Ivor winners from the 50s and, now we’ve lost the great Johnny Dankworth, only one of those three remains… our earliest living recipient Tommy Steele, the first British rockstar, who received his Ivor in 1956 BC (before Cliff).

When my dad emigrated he gave his Ivors statuettes to my sister, saying that if I wanted an Ivor I’d have to win one for myself. So it was a bittersweet moment when in 1979 the Committee awarded an Ivor to The War Of The Worlds while forgetting to give one to its lyricist (me). How ironic that I now find myself chairing the very Committee which broke my heart all those years ago.

he Ivors are the public face of BASCA and we are proud to present them. But while they are undoubtedly our biggest event of the year, they certainly aren’t the limit of our aspirations. As a celebration of UK songwriters, The Ivors are unsurpassed. What’s more, the resources generated from the awards enable us to continue our work throughout the year.

What do we do? Our website – www.basca.org.uk – clearly states what we stand for. Our aims are to campaign, to inform, to build community and to celebrate the role of UK music writing.

Campaign The driving force behind BASCA is the desire to improve the professional environment in which our members work, to allow them to earn financial reward for their craft and to improve the awareness of what they do. We are well placed to do this through our membership of UK Music, which campaigns as an umbrella body on behalf of the whole of the UK commercial music industry, and which has recently played such an active part in the passage of the Digital Economy Act through its legislative conception and birth pangs.

But BASCA’s campaigning is not confined to UK Music. We talk directly to politicians, government agencies and the media to ensure that the voice of the creator is heard, and now produce a monthly news and opinion

BASCA also runs regular seminars and professional master-classes where practitioners – whether songwriters, composers or those who work with them – share the benefit of their experience. With so many musicrelated issues in the headlines, our frequent members’ meetings are a timely opportunity to debate topical subjects with invited speakers from the industry.

That’s why BASCA is a member of the three pan-European composer and songwriter organisations: APCOE (popular music), FFACE (audiovisual music) and ECF (concert music), and of the umbrella lobbying body, the

European Composer & Songwriter Alliance (ECSA). As a spokesman for ESCA, BASCA chief executive Patrick Rackow has been involved in putting the creators’ viewpoint to the politicians and civil servants in Brussels at the recent open hearings on collective management and to the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs.

Celebrate Celebration is what The Ivors are really all about and have been for the past 55 years; awards given by music writers to their peers. Through The Ivors, we aim to raise the profile of the craft of songwriting and to celebrate excellence.

Across the year we also celebrate those talented individuals whose work (often behind the scenes) helps to support the careers of composers and songwriters at our Gold Badge Awards lunch, which takes place in October. In recent years, Gold Badge awards have been given to singers, managers, producers, lawyers and copyists. For the past seven years BASCA has honoured the best in contemporary classical music writing through the British Composer Awards. Presented in December, they recognise a wide variety of modern concert music writing, including, for the first time in 2009, an award for jazz composition.

Paul Gambaccini I represent you. I sit in on The Ivors Committee as an official observer and keep them honest. They are. And more than that: they are accomplished, opinionated, and energetic. They are knowledgeable, yet want to know more.

This year the committee members conducted an informed and passionate discussion as to whether to add a new category for music composed for video games. Having decided to do so, they listened and learned as an expert on the subject led them through the complexities of the art and the formalities of establishing a judging panel. You can see happiness on the faces and hear joy in the voices of the members when everyone realises that a deserving writer or composer has been chosen to receive an Ivor.

One reason The Ivors are the most respected awards in the profession is that the committee is the best. They meet several times, not just once.

They are good listeners as well as good speakers. They know how to delegate decision-making to panels of experts, rather than hog all the choices for themselves.

Composer and film-maker Julian Nott studied music and politics and economics at Oxford University, before attending the British National Film and Television School. In 2009, he won the Ivor for Best Television Soundtrack for Wallace and Gromit (A Matter of Loaf and Death).

What does winning an Ivor mean to you?

I’m not one of those composers with masses of awards in my cabinet so it was a nice surprise!

What is your favourite film score and why?

If I’m forced to name one single score, which is a bit silly, it would be Michael Nyman’s music for Wonderland. It was a very moving film, but in my view it was actually the music score that made the film so emotionally affecting.

What is your most surreal experience on a recording session?

Part of the studio ceiling suddenly collapsing with a huge crash when I was doing a piano overdub a few yards away.

Twenty minutes earlier the cello section had been sitting under the same spot so they had a lucky escape and I am unable to report a truly extreme surreal experience.

Your support will help musicians of all ages. Whether it’s a grant to buy a student an instrument, helping a professional cope with illness or injury or to explore new directions.

If you could change one thing about the UK what would it be?

The UK is a perfect place to live. I’m always relieved to get back.

We’re there for musicians when they need it most.

How do you spend time away from music?

The hours are so terrible when you’re scoring so I try to make up time with my family.

Do you collect anything?

I do spend time trawling auctions for post-war British art, the affordable end, looking for things other people haven’t spotted, with no success whatsoever.

Was there a crossroads in your life where you could have ended up doing something different?

I’ve lived a life full of crossroads. I started off in the City, then worked as a TV producer and now I’m a composer.

I nearly became a lawyer. Hopefully no more crossroads are on the horizon!

Which three people from history would you most like to have met?

Samuel Johnson, Keir Hardie, Julius Caesar, Lenin (I refuse to be bound to three).

Would you like to have been a rock star and if so, in which band?

I was always too ugly to be a rock star, but I would have liked to be in a band with great musicians such as Pink Floyd or Emerson Lake & Palmer, which shows my age!

Shaznay Lewis Shaznay Lewis is a multi-award winning singer-songwriter and former member of All Saints. She won the Ivor for PRS Most Performed Work in 2000.

What are your strongest memories of The Ivors?

The atmosphere. I could sense how important it was. I remember feeling it wasn’t like other awards I’d seen on TV – I could tell it meant more than that. My first Ivors was when Never Ever was nominated. I felt a bit gutted I didn’t win! Even though I won lots of awards for that song, The Ivors was the one I really wanted.

For me, as a solo project, I’ve also struggled with the visual element. All Saints was a commercial girl group, even if the music was always very cool. But because All Saints were so visual, I’m expected to be the same. I was only comfortable with that visual trend as part of All Saints, not as a solo artist. As a writer, I’d just like to write good songs and let them speak for themselves.

What’s the best thing about being a songwriter?

It’s the ability to express yourself. It’s like therapy really.

Whatever is pent up inside me, I can blurt a song out and it’s a fantastic release.

Who would you cast as yourself in a movie about your life?

My daughter, Tiger Lily.

How is fame different to how you originally thought it would be?

I thought that fame would only exist whenever I did something out in public, like performing on TV or on stage. It was never something I thought would be carried over into my everyday life. I prefer to only take fame out of my little box when it’s needed and then put it away again. That works for me, and I think it’s what has kept me grounded.

What things make you angriest about the music industry?

That it’s gone so corporate. Gone are the days when talent can develop. Nowadays, there’s no time to nurture and watch someone grow – it has to be a quick win. It’s a shame. In the UK, you’re also expected to be one thing and stay in that box.

How tricky was it to go from writing songs for four people to writing songs just for yourself?

Writing songs for myself was difficult because I was aware of the fact that I couldn’t hide behInd three other people with my words. The only person that was representing those situations and subjects was me – my honesty was allowing everyone to know what was going on with me.

What is your current musical inspiration and direction?

My current inspiration would be Santogold. I love her and she reminds me of myself. I’m interested in what producers like Labyrinth, Diplo and Major Lazer are doing. Right now, I’m five months in with my second child so my musical direction is on a new journey. I want what I create next to be way past anything I ever thought I was possibly capable of putting together – and have major fun along the way.

In America, it seems a lot of the biggest talents, like Neo and Lady Gaga, were originally songwriters. Here, you’re either a songwriter or artist – you’re not expected to dip in and out.

The Ivors Classical Music Award

From humble (and at times dismissed) beginnings, the music for video games has matured alongside the rapidly expanding industry it serves. Big studios such as Abbey Road and Air Lyndhurst are now as likely to host an 80 piece orchestra for a video game score, as they are for a conventional movie score. This is the first time a category for games music has been included in The Ivors and BASCA is proud to recognise the composers of this exciting and technically demanding genre.

In 1981, the great composer Sir William Walton received an Ivor for Outstanding Services to British Music and over the years many figures from the classical music world have been honoured at the event. The Ivors Classical Music Award has been presented every year since 2003, providing an opportunity for BASCA to recognise outstanding achievement in composition.

James MacMillan James MacMillan is one of today’s most successful living composers and is also internationally active as a conductor. No. Which composers did you admire when you were growing up?

I greatly admired Messiaen because he was inspired by similar things. I admired Shostakovich because he believed in the still viable power of symphonic form. And I admired Britten because he made contemporary music vital and meaningful for people in this country.

What do you think of music critics?

I think they are god’s gift to the world – geniuses, all of them.

What do you do to relax?

I play with my new granddaughter, Sara.

Eg White Eg White is one of Britain’s finest songwriters. His credits appear on hits by artists including Will Young, James Morrison, Duffy, James Blunt, Take That, Joss Stone, Pink and Kylie Minogue. In 2009, the same year as he released his solo album, Adventure Man, he was awarded the Ivor for Songwriter of the Year.

What are your memories of last year’s Ivor Novello Awards?

My main memory is completely screwing up the speech. I wanted to say something about how songwriting today is very different from the past – and that you can now knock together songs really quickly with the lead vocal on the record almost certainly being the one sung there and then in the heat of the moment. Although something has been lost, I think it’s interesting that you also gain something.

But then I realised that half of the people in the room had probably been hurt by this change in the industry and got tied up in knots.

Has your songwriting method changed much over the years?

Fifteen years ago I might spend ten days writing a song and the investment in it was massive. Nowadays I accept that the mortality rate is high. If I write 40 songs in a year, the majority won’t be that good. Eight might be singles, and only one will be very good.

Which songs are you proudest of?

The really sad truth is that I like the slushy ballads. I’m proudest of these “Trojan horse” songs that seem like they are loving songs but they’re actually about inability. Leave Right Now for Will Young, the ones for James Morrison and Adele. I couldn’t do a straight love song though – the language is too debased.

What do you think will be the next significant movement in British music?

If I knew I’d be doing it. I was totally wrong footed by pop. I thought that we’d see increasingly erratic and uncontrollable self-expression, but instead it has been straightforward pop. I didn’t see it coming – and I will be happy to see a change.

Have you gained anything from having had a long road to commercial success?

Some healthy cynicism. I know what it’s like to fail much more than to succeed, so I have a degree of patience I wouldn’t have. And I don’t feel confident or that the world is my oyster. I think that has saved me from a greater degree of arrogance.

Are you glad you’ve had so much experience?

I do know what I’m doing and it’s a nice feeling to know I can’t be embarrassed. But perhaps too much experience can be a disadvantage. It makes you less inclined to take risks – if you’ve seen a gate shutting in your face 25 times, you won’t go there. But perhaps one time that gate will open, and when it does, it’ll be fantastic. Sometimes you need to be fearless.

If someone stole your music collection, which albums would you miss the most?

I’d miss my vinyl most. I started collecting them in 1979 and they have influenced me hugely. Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, some amazing Ray Charles records from the mid 1970s. Even though I don’t play her so much anymore, losing the Joni Mitchell records would be a tragedy. But I’d mostly miss the Ben Britten, Charlie Parker with strings and Rachmaninoff. I’d take that over the soul.

Are award shows a bit self-indulgent?

The Ivors have always felt real to me. The moments I remember most over the years are hearing Robert Smith of The Cure, Lou Reed and Vince Clarke. They were amazing. I go most years and find it’s an expression of power and prowess. It’s definitely not self-indulgent.
