An Ivor also symbolises the Academy, the UK’s only dedicated community for songwriters and composers. As a collective we celebrate the highest achievements in music creation, campaign for change and create new opportunities for music creators at all stages of their careers. The last year has been tough for many songwriters and composers. In response, we’ve raised our voices and relaunched The Ivors Academy Trust to empower music creators to start and build their careers, overcome barriers and reach their full potential. The Ivors is the pinnacle of Ivors Week, the UK’s week-long celebration of songwriting and composing, which supports The Ivors Academy Trust. We hope you find out more about what we’re doing and donate to support our work. Our members’ voices will also be heard at this year’s Ivors, as for the first time they have voted to decide who wins Songwriter of the Year. This is the second year of our partnership with Apple Music and the first awards ceremony that we have presented together. Today, we will announce the winner of the Rising Star Award with Apple Music, which honours and supports exceptionally talented young music creators.

Apple Music Welcome Last year we celebrated the nominees and the winners of the first virtual Ivors, presented on Apple Music 1, including the first ever winner of The Ivors Rising Star Award with Apple Music: Mysie. Since then, it has been the fervent hope that this year’s celebration could be in person, so it is special to see that become reality.

Human adaptability has also been apparent in the collaborations that have been facilitated by technology. Following the announcement of the first ever Ivors Rising Star Award with Apple Music winner, we have been inspired to see Fraser T Smith’s mentorship of Mysie blossom and develop notwithstanding long periods of time unable to meet in person. And so many songwriters have successfully learned new ways of working without being in the same room as one other.

At this moment we look back and reflect on the challenges and triumphs of the past year. The challenges are so clear they need little introduction. But the triumphs include the wealth of creativity that so many songwriters have demonstrated. This year’s nominations reflect the powerful and diverse ways in which music has told the stories of our time (or given us much-needed distraction from it), whether in song form alone, or intertwined with other means of storytelling, through TV, movies and video games.

This is also a moment to look forward, and embrace and commit to the road ahead. One of the few certainties in life is uncertainty, now more than ever. But of this we can be certain: the art of songwriting will continue to provide the soundtrack to our lives, ease our pain, enrich our celebrations, relieve the monotony and so much more. And we will be right alongside those talented writers and composers who take us on such exhilarating rides. Congratulations to all The Ivors 2021 nominees and winners. An Ivor Novello Award

An Ivor Novello Award Statuette

As each recipient of an Ivor Novello Award will know, the treasured solid bronze statuette they’re clutching is highly original, although few know about its origins and how it’s made. Named after Welsh composer and actor Ivor Novello, it rewards British and Irish talents in songwriting and musical composition. First presented by the Songwriters Guild of Great Britain at a televised ceremony held at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London in 1956, the statuette in its original form is still presented at the Academy’s two award ceremonies, The Ivors and The Ivors Composer Awards. The finely crafted statuette – created in 1955 by Hazel Underwood, a spirited student at St Martin’s School of Art, London – distils the awards’ values of creativity and craftsmanship. The mysterious female figure singing from a songbook is Euterpe, Greek muse of singing and lyric poetry. Its expressive, textured surface may have been inspired by the work of Elizabeth Frink, who taught sculpture at St Martin’s School of Art. Underwood oversaw production of the statuettes for a few years. At one point, they were made by metal foundry Corvic, which was taken over by Mike Wilson in 1974; he renamed it Meltcharm Ltd in 1984. Today, they’re cast at specialist foundry Investacast in Ilfracombe, and have been hand-finished by Mike since 1975. Their brass name plates have been engraved by the same engraver since then, too. The statuettes were sand-cast at the time. In 2005, the Academy asked Mike to revert to the original investment casting (or lost-wax casting) process. To facilitate this, Mike met Underwood through a mutual contact. The exacting sculptor wasn’t happy with the surface detailing of the sand-cast statuette she was originally shown, but she gave the nod for one lent by Sir John Dankworth (presented to him in 1957) to be used as a master pattern.

At his workshop in Gloucestershire, Mike now gives each statuette its antique bronze finish and attaches the wooden base and engraved brass name plate to it. Each completed statuette weighs 5lb, 3oz. ‘I usually commission around 60 statuettes each year,’ he says. ‘The number can vary, as sometimes several collaborating songwriters are joint-winners. Outside the Academy, only the engraver and me know the winners’ names.’ He is proud of the fact that the statuettes are cast and hand-finished in the UK: ‘In their acceptance speeches, winners often say they value their Ivor Novello Award above all others. Each one is unique and its weight enhances its quality.’ DOMINIC LUTYENS

Rising Star Award with Apple Music Introducing

Introducing

Making your way as a songwriter or composer has always had its challenges, but the past 12 months probably represent the most difficult year ever to try and make it in the music industry as a creative. So it is truly heartening to see the sensational talents assembled for the second annual Rising Star Award with Apple Music, all of whom have done spectacular work throughout the ravages of a global pandemic. After all, this is a prize which honours young British and Irish songwriters and composers with exceptional potential and ambition. All the nominees will receive a mentorship from an established Ivors Academy member and leaders from Apple Music, with this year’s mentors featuring Cathy Dennis, Nile Rodgers, Jamie Hartman, Jamie Scott and Fiona Bevan. But whoever ultimately picks up the gong at The Ivors ceremony, the future looks bright for all five nominees, and indeed for the next generation of Academy members, as we emerge from the Covid-19 crisis into a brave new world… Take ALLEGRA. The soulful singersongwriter’s ascent has already involved everything from cutting her first demo at 13, to walking away from it all to volunteer at a Buddhist retreat centre. For her, Ivors recognition equals true validation.

“It means good things come from writing and living honestly,” she grins. “I’ve tried my hand at different forms of expression and experimented with different styles of songwriting. But the songs that awarded me this nomination have been what I really wanted to say and, musically speaking, how I most wanted to say it. When I’m finally being myself, other people do appreciate it!” And there is plenty to appreciate with Allegra’s songs, as seen on singles Spectacles and Excuse Me. Lyrically, she says “there isn’t a phrase that isn’t sharp, even when it’s gentle” while each song “charts new emotional territory”.

“It doesn’t mean anything if I’m not connected with what I’m truly trying to express,” she says. “Maintaining that connection is the most important thing.” One singer-songwriter who knows all about forming such a bond is RACHEL CHINOURIRI. She hails from Croydon, is of Zimbabwean heritage and has already seen her emotional anthems find favour with Michaela Cole and Coldplay’s Chris Martin. “I want to be known as a true creative,” she says. “I want to make something which no one has done. I want to explore genres, cultures and sounds because music is universal. There’s too much music in this world to limit myself.” And there’s certainly no ceiling on what Chinouriri could achieve. Her debut EP, Four° In Winter, already has over 2.5 million streams and showcases a writer with a song for every occasion. “My approach is quite complex,” she says. “I try to find a melody that meanders through rhythms in the instrumental. I look at the voice like an instrument which compliments the instrumental and takes you on a journey.”

She now plans to “capture as many songs that I have inside me as possible”. But, ultimately, all that writing is serving a greater purpose.

Chinouriri’s own voyage is already proceeding very nicely, but she’s hungry for more, seeing the Ivors nod as “the extra push I needed after how difficult it’s been to find inspiration during the pandemic”.

HOLLY HUMBERSTONE has been similarly impacted by what she calls “a very weird year, filled with anxiety and uncertainty”. “I feel as if I’ve been stuck in lockdown for my whole career so far,” she says. “I’ve watched the streaming numbers grow, but never seen any physical proof people are appreciating the music I’ve put so much love into. Being nominated feels amazing.” Despite the isolation, Humberstone’s career has moved way beyond her hometown of Grantham. The unique singer-songwriter – all cutting lyrics and irresistible melodies – has already become an Apple Music Up Next artist and placed second on the BBC’s Sound Of 2021, proof of her work’s emotional resonance. “Since I was small, writing was my way of relieving anxieties and working through confusing things I was feeling,” she says. “If the songs can help listeners in the same way they helped me, I hope the music can spread to more people.” That’s already happening, with Deep End and Please Don’t Leave Just Yet helping her reach a huge audience. But it’s the art of songwriting which truly energises her, as she pledges to “remain authentic and unchanged by the external pressures of this weird world”. KAMAL. is familiar with that world, having written Homebody, one of the de facto lockdown anthems, even though it was actually penned pre-quarantine. Now, however, the singer-songwriter – who already has tens of millions of streams for his pop-R&B jams – is ready to really go places, in every sense of the phrase. “I definitely want to grow as an artist, both in terms of audience and in sound,” he says. “What’s more important, regardless of the numbers, is that I’m able to make music I enjoy and am proud of. If that isn’t the case, it’ll suck the joy out of the thing that I love.” 34

There’s surely no chance of that happening, with Kamal’s “improvised” writing style already earning major co-signs from the likes of Dave, Annie Mac and Billie Eilish, as well as the “overwhelming” Rising Star nod. “I’m gassed to get such recognition for my writing, because it’s something I’ve put a lot of time into,” he smiles. “It’s given me a burst of motivation and almost reinvigorated my love for making songs and music.”

WILLOW KAYNE says the nomination has “only made me want to improve my songwriting and see how far I can take it”, but the truth is, her skills have already helped her go a long way. Peppering her compositions with hip-hop, hazy electronica and punk attitude, as well as lyrics so sharp you could cut yourself on them, she’s already been signed up by Dua Lipa’s management team and scored a major label deal with Columbia. Meanwhile, her irrepressible debut single, Two Seater, laid down a marker as only a potential future superstar can. “If I can keep doing my hobby as a career, I am a happy lady,” she affirms. “I originally started writing because I could say feelings that I wouldn’t usually express out loud – that really hasn’t changed, even now!” As a result, even greater things are surely coming. “I’ve been given a chance to build my own world, to look and sound exactly how I like,” she enthuses. “I would be silly not to do it!” And there, Willow Kayne surely articulates not just the views of her fellow nominees, but all songwriters as they emerge after 18 months of darkness. Long may these Rising Stars shine. 35

Mark-Anthony Turnage once described his approach to music-making by declaring: “I always want to do something different.”

The composer – who had his breakthrough moment with his first opera, 1988’s Greek – has long drawn from a huge variety of influences in his work. From his earliest pieces, jazz has proved a huge source of inspiration, while over the years he has also absorbed elements of everything from Led Zeppelin to Beyoncé, establishing himself as a contemporary, hugely relevant musician able to reach beyond classical’s hardcore audience. But, at the same time, he has acquired the accolades and positions reserved for musicians of the very highest stature. He has been the Composer in Association with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the English National Opera, Composer in Residence for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Associate Composer for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Mead Composer In Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Research Fellow in Composition at the Royal College of Music. His work has been performed at the BBC Proms, Sadler’s Wells, the Royal Ballet and the Royal Opera. He has won at the Olivier Awards, the South Bank Show Awards and been honoured with a CBE. But his subject matter often comes from less rarefied spaces. Never afraid of political or social commentary, he has written pieces based on everything from the outbreak of World War I (2013’s orchestral work Passchendaele) to the tragic life and death of model, actress, celebrity Anna Nicole Smith (2011’s opera Anna Nicole). If songwriting was an Olympic sport, the UK and Ireland would surely top the medal table.

Because, just as with our athletes in Tokyo, The Ivors 2020 songwriting squad delivered across the board, coming up with a string of both incredible songs and enormous hits. So, no wonder The Ivors have introduced nominations for this award for the first time since it was introduced in 1970, with shortlisted writers chosen by The Ivors Awards Committee and voted on by Academy members. And it will surely require a photo finish to separate this brilliant, diverse group of songwriters, all of whom had a huge impact on the music world across 2020. Look at AJ TRACEY. The West London rapper describes his 2020 as “crazy and historical” and not without good reason. Because, despite perpetual lockdowns, it was a year that saw his songwriting hit Olympic levels. It started with a banger as Rain, cowritten and performed with Aitch and Tay Keith, hit the Top 3. That was joined in the year’s Top 40 best-sellers by Dinner Guest, released with MoStack, and another Top 5 hit. Tracey’s stellar rise has been attained completely independently. But that DIY approach has never limited his ambition, with Tracey proving himself one of the most versatile writers on the scene.

So his 2020 also featured everything from the street-savvy Secure The Bag! 2 EP to West Ten, an ode to his beloved Ladbroke Grove postcode, performed with Mabel (and co-written with the pop star, plus fellow Songwriter Of The Year nominee Kamille, Fred Gibson and Take A Day Trip), as well as many more hits. Such achievements may be sobering for those of us who spent 2020 on the sofa, binging boxsets. But it was far from atypical for this crop of superstar songwriters. Take KAMILLE, for example. She is in the hits business – and business has never been better. Songwriter of the Year

The star is forging a successful artist career but, as a songwriter, she also had her fingerprints all over 2020’s finest pop moments. She made a stellar seven-track contribution to Little Mix’s sixth album, Confetti, including cowriting three of the record’s huge hits: Break Up Song, Holiday and the title track (with fellow Songwriter Of The Year nominee MNEK, plus TMS and Maegan Cottone). But that was just for starters. Kamille also co-wrote Mabel’s Top 10 hits, Boyfriend and West Ten; contributed to Clean Bandit’s Tick Tock; worked on a brace of Tiesto bangers; and even found time to get involved with Headie One’s Ain’t It Different and Dua Lipa’s game-changing Future Nostalgia album. All of that showcased her stellar talent for crossover songs in almost any genre, and adds up to a golden year by anyone’s standards. But for Kamille, it was simply business as usual.

Also doing the business in 2020 were CELESTE & JAMIE HARTMAN. Co-writing chemistry is rarely an exact science, but their partnership has proved more successful than anything you could come up with in a laboratory. The pair came together to write ahead of Celeste’s debut album, which would eventually hit No.1 in 2021. At the time, Celeste Waite was the hotly-tipped winner of the BRIT Awards Rising Star and the BBC Sound Of Poll in 2019. Hartman, meanwhile, was the former frontman of Noughties stars Ben’s Brother, now enjoying a second career as the co-writer of blockbuster hits.

And there was plenty more where that came form. Songs such as Stop This Flame, I Can See The Change, Little Runaway and Love Is Back laid the ground for what would become one of the most successful UK debut albums of recent years and proved a unique songwriting partnership had been created. KID HARPOON & HARRY STYLES have also turned out to be an inspirational double act, with their partnership demonstrating the value of taking your time, even in today’s sometimes feverish hitmaking business. The pair had already forged a productive collaboration. But on Styles’ second album, Fine Line – released at the very end of 2019 and one of the dominant global albums in 2020 – their alliance really hit its stride. Fine Line became the second biggest-seller of 2020 in the UK and hit No.5 on the year’s IFPI Top 10 Global Albums – the only UK record to make the list. And the album’s songs – 11 of which

Together, they sprinkled songwriting gold dust across 2020 like something from the magical John Lewis Christmas advert that their A Little Love song soundtracked. It was the first original song to be used in the festive commercial blockbuster.

were co-written by Harpoon and Styles, including the hits Falling, Golden and the cultural phenomenon that is Watermelon Sugar – became omnipresent on streaming and radio playlists across the planet. At the heart of all this success was the partnership between two hitmakers whose artist careers had taken very different paths, but whose co-writing proved uniquely empathetic. Indeed, this year’s crop of nominees display many winning attributes. It’s fitting that Uzoechi Emenike – aka MNEK – featured, as both artist and co-writer, on a 2020 anthem called Head & Heart. Because the star brings those two qualities to everything he works on.

So, as well as Joel Corry’s No.1 Head & Heart, he helped bring out the best in a staggering array of pop talent. From Jonas Blue and Paloma Faith (Mistakes) to Sigala ft. Becky Hill (Heaven On My Mind) and from HRVY and Matoma (Good Vibes) to KSI (Really Love) and Ella Henderson ft. Roger Sanchez (Dream On Me), MNEK was in the mix to almost guarantee hit status. MNEK also proved crucial to longer-form projects, working on smash hit albums including Steps’ What The Future Holds, Paloma Faith’s Infinite Things, Dua Lipa’s Club Future Nostalgia and, of course, Little Mix’s Confetti. Because that’s the MNEK way: head, heart and soul, every single time. And that sums up this unique field of 2020 Songwriter Of The Year contenders. Only one can win gold in the form of the Ivor for Songwriter Of The Year but, when it comes to writing the bangers that matter, they’re all winners.

And in 2020, MNEK worked on a lot. With his presence a hallmark of quality, his 2020 catalogue represents a vast array of hits that speak directly to the nation.

The Ivors Inspiration Award Alison Goldfrapp & Will Gregory

Because Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory – who came together as the duo Goldfrapp in 1999 – have now spent more than two decades firing up their imaginations and encouraging others to connect with their emotions. Both have plenty of solo accomplishments in their resumés, but it’s their unforgettable collaboration in Goldfrapp that has produced one of the most incredible song collections of the 21st century. From the moment their debut album, the Mercury Prize-nominated Felt Mountain, emerged in 2000, it’s been clear that the duo were onto something very special. They remain giants of electronic music, but have also been influenced by everything from glam rock to organic folk music, while their magnificent seven albums to date have thrown up song after song to entrance the nation. From the warm folktronica of that debut to the eclectic electroclash of their mostrecent album, 2017’s Silver Eye, every Goldfrapp era has been different, while remaining true to the band’s pioneering spirit. And throughout that time, the hits have just kept on coming. The glam stomp of Strict Machine picked up The Ivors Dance Award in 2004, the irresistible disco of Ooh La La was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2007, and the ‘80s synth-rockinspired Rocket followed suit in 2011. Along the way, Goldfrapp and Gregory have never been afraid to collaborate with others, but it’s their core relationship that has ensured Goldfrapp became one of the era’s most enduring and original partnerships. And, 22 years on, Gregory’s musical wizardry and Goldfrapp’s evocatively ambiguous lyrics continue to be an irresistible combination. Long may they keep feeling the inspiration. 53

Some things are just meant to be.

That album spawned three huge hit singles – Pale Shelter, Change and Mad World, the latter of which would later provide an incongruously bleak Christmas No.1 for Michael Andrews feat. Gary Jules. The combination of Orzabal’s psychology-influenced lyrics with their dual vocals and charisma made them UK pop sensations. But it was the follow-up, 1985’s Songs From The Big Chair, that really cemented the Tears For Fears legend. Boasting a more expansive sound, it also brought even bigger hits than the debut, and saw them conquer the world. Both Shout and Everybody Wants To Rule The World topped the US Hot 100 while Head Over Heels – co-written by Smith and Orzabal – also hit the Top 3, a rare level of achievement for a British act at the time. It was 1989 when the next album, The Seeds Of Love, again represented a great leap forward for this most innovative of bands. A psychedelic influence fuelled another monster co-written global hit, Sowing The Seeds Of Love, while the soulful Woman In Chains, featuring Oleta Adams, added another dimension to another UK Number One album. A break-up followed, although Orzabal kept the Tears For Fears name alive as a solo project, and Smith also enjoyed a vibrant solo career. But they came back together for the appropriately titled 2005 album, Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, largely co-written by Orzabal, Smith and co-writer Charlton Pettus. They’ve stayed together ever since, playing live regularly and earning this richly deserved Ivor for making this Mad World a much better place. Just as they were always destined to do. 57

Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith may have taken the scenic route to international pop stardom, via a failed mod revival band and fortuitous access to synthesisers. But when everything clicked on Tears For Fears’ 1983 debut album, The Hurting, it created one of the most successful pop partnerships the UK has ever seen.

Special International Award with Apple Music Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora

For 30 years, their musical partnership sat at the heart of Bon Jovi; a group that took the name of its charismatic frontman but one where he and the swashbuckling guitarist were, according to Jon, equals in a brotherhood that took on the world. Formed in 1983, Bon Jovi’s first couple of albums were minor hits, but their third – 1986’s Slippery When Wet – changed everything. Fuelled by monster hits such as Wanted Dead Or Alive, You Give Love A Bad Name and – of course – the gigantic US No.1 Livin’ On A Prayer, the album is 12 times platinum in America and widely credited with taking hard rock to a new audience. The Bon Jovi/Sambora hitmaking axis – with co-writer Desmond Child – was the foundation of that stellar success and, unlike many of their peers, there was plenty more where that came from. By the time Sambora left in 2013 to spend more time with his family, Bon Jovi had made nine more albums and been behind more hits than their fellow New Jerseyites, The Sopranos. Songs such as 1988’s Bad Medicine, 1992’s Keep The Faith, 1993’s In These Arms and 2000’s It’s My Life proved the pair had a hotline to blue collar concerns and a knack for irresistible melodies. It’s a combination that’s cemented their status as one of the biggest bands in the world, and one beloved in the UK. Even now, as the two find success apart, the fruits of their collaboration live on as many of the most popular rock anthems of all time. And that’s why they’ll be united again in receiving this prestigious Ivor. Because in their songs, like the defiant protagonists of Livin’ On A Prayer, they’ve got each other – and that’s a lot to celebrate…
