Safety Intended use bluephase 16i is a high-performance LED polymerization light that produces energy-rich blue light. It is used for the polymerization of light-curing dental materials directly at the dental unit. These Operating Instructions provide recommendations and guidelines for the intended use of the light. Please read them carefully.

Indication bluephase 16i is particularly suitable for the polymerization of light-curing dental materials activated in the wavelength range of 430 – 490 nm. These materials include restoratives, bondings/adhesives, bases, liners, fissure sealants, temporary materials, as well as adhesives for brackets and dental-lab materials, e.g. ceramic inlays.

Contraindication Materials, the polymerization of which is activated outside the wavelength range of 430 – 490 nm. If you are not sure about certain products, please ask the manufacturer of the corresponding material.

This unit should not be used near a flammable anaesthetic mixture with air, oxygen or nitrous oxide.

Safety notes Classified by underwriters Laboratories Inc. with Respect to electric shock; fire and mechanical hazards only in accordance with: UL2601-1 and CAN/CSA C 22.2 NO.601.1 bluephase 16i has been designed according to IEC 601-1 (EN 60601-1), complies with the relevant EU regulations and was certified by UL/CUL as an internationally accredited testing body.

The apparatus has been shipped from the manufacturer in a safe and technically sound condition. In order to maintain it in this condition and to ensure risk-free operation, the notes and regulations in these Operating Instructions have to be observed. To prevent damage to equipment and protect patients, users, and third parties from risks, the following safety instructions have to be observed:

Portable and mobile HF (high frequency) communication devices may interfere with medical equipment. The use of mobile phones during operation is not allowed.

Usage and liability bluephase 16i must be employed solely for the intended use. Any other uses are contraindicated. The manufacturer does not accept any liability for damage resulting from misuse or failure to observe the Operating Instructions.

Furthermore, the user is responsible for testing bluephase 16i for its use and suitability for the intended purposes.

This is particularly important if other equipment is used in the immediate vicinity of the apparatus at the same time as the curing light is being used.

Use only original spare parts and accessories from Ivoclar Vivadent (see Accessories). The manufacturer does not accept any liability for damage resulting from the use of other spare parts or accessories.

Operating voltage Before switching on the apparatus, make sure that a) the voltage of the local power supply complies with the voltage indicated on the rating plate, and b) the unit has reached the ambient temperature.

If the battery or power pack are used separately, e.g. during start-up or Click & Cure corded operation, contact with patients or third parties must be prevented.

Do not touch the exposed contacts of the battery or connection plug (power pack).

Indications of compromised safety If there is any doubt about safe operation being certain, the power must be disconnected and the battery removed to avoid accidental operation. This may be the case, for example, if the apparatus is visibly damaged or no longer works correctly. The apparatus is only completely disconnected from the power supply if the power cord has been pulled out of the plug-in socket.

Disinfection and sterilization Contaminated surfaces of the apparatus, light probes and anti-glare shield must be disinfected or autoclaved before each use.

Light output Before each use, make sure that the light output permits adequate curing. For this purpose, check the light probe for contamination and damage and use the cleaned light meter to test the light output, if necessary.

Eye protection Direct or indirect exposure of the eyes must be prevented.

Prolonged exposure to the light is unpleasant for the eyes and may result in injury. It is therefore advisable to use the anti-glare shield provided. Individuals who are generally sensitive to light, who take photosensitizing drugs, or who have undergone eye surgery and people who work with the apparatus or in its vicinity for long periods of time should not be exposed to the light of this device and wear protective goggles that absorb light below 500 nm.

Maintenance and cleaning Any repair work must only be performed by a certified Ivoclar Vivadent Service Center. Liquids or any foreign substances must not enter the handpiece or the charging base during cleaning (electrical shock hazard).

Disconnect the charging base from the power supply when cleaning it.

Battery Use only original spare parts. In particular, use only original Ivoclar Vivadent batteries and charging bases.

Caution: Use only specified charger. Do not short circuit battery. Do not store above 60 째C (140 째F). May explode if disposed of in fire.

Disposal Dispose of unserviceable batteries and curing lights according to the national rules and regulations.

Batteries must not be incinerated.

High heat development (Burn hazard) The very high light intensity of bluephase 16i results in a certain development of heat. Prolonged exposure of the pulp and soft tissues may result in irreversible or reversible damage. Therefore, this high-performance polymerization light must only be used by specially trained dental personnel.

Uninterrupted curing times of more than 10 seconds on the same tooth segment, as well as direct contact with the gingiva, oral mucous membrane or skin have to be prevented by all means. If required, polymerization should be carried out in intermittent intervals of maximum 10 seconds each. Prevent heat accumulation when polymerizing with a rubber dam in place. If it is inevitable that soft tissue will be exposed to the curing light, reduce the light intensity (use the Low Power Program).

The specifications as regards the curing program and curing time have to be observed at all times (see Selecting the curing program). Furthermore, the light emission window must always point directly at the material to be cured (e.g. use a finger to steady the light).

The treatment of sensitive patients with the High Power Program is not allowed. In these cases, polymerize with reduced light intensity (use the Low Power Program).

Start-up Check the delivery for completeness and any possible transportation damage (see Delivery form). If components are missing or damaged, immediately contact your dealer or local Service Center.

Charging base Before you switch on the device, make sure that your local power supply complies with the voltage indicated on the rating plate. The rating plate is attached to the underside of the charging base.

Handpiece Before you insert the light probe, remove the protective foil on the corresponding opening of the handpiece.

Slightly turn the light probe while attaching it to the handpiece. After that, mount the anti-glare shield on the light probe.

Place the charging base on a suitable, flat surface.

Remove the protective foil from the connection plug of the power pack. Slide the connection plug of the power pack into the socket on the underside of the charging base. Tilt it slightly and apply slight pressure until you hear and feel it snap into place.

Remove the protective foil from the battery contacts.

Slide the battery straight into the handpiece until you hear and feel it snap into place.

Connect the power cord with the power supply and the power pack. The Power ON indicator on the left side of the housing lights up green (see Indicators on the charging base).

We recommend fully charging the battery before the first use.

Operation Charging the battery Place the handpiece in the corresponding rest on the charging base.

Disinfect or autoclave contaminated surfaces of the curing light, light probe and anti-glare shield before each use. In addition, make sure that the light output permits adequate polymerization. For this purpose, check the light probe for dirt or damage and use the integrated light meter to test the light output.

Switching the handpiece on and off (stand-by mode) Once removed from the charging base, the handpiece is switched on by means of the start button. The display is activated at the same time.

The charging indicator on the left side of the charging base starts blinking green (see Indicators on the charging base). The handpiece is now in stand-by mode and is automatically switched off. Any indicator on the display is extinguished.

The battery is fully charged as soon as the indicator shows a permanent green light (if the battery is completely empty, charging takes approximately 2 hours). However, the handpiece may be removed from the charging base even if it is not fully charged and used for polymerization at any time. As a rule of thumb, approximately 60% of the charging time is available as curing time (example: After 10 minutes of charging an empty battery, approximately 6 minutes of curing time is available).

If the handpiece is not used for approximately 4 minutes, it changes to the energy-saving stand-by mode and is automatically switched off. Renewed pressing of the start button results in the stand-by mode being switched off and the handpiece switched on.

Settings The curing program and the curing time can be individually set. On initial start-up, the device will operate with the following presets : – HIP curing light (High Power) – Curing time: 10 seconds For the other curing programs, the following curing times have been preset: – LOP (Low Power): 10 seconds – SOF (Soft start): 15 seconds

Selecting the curing time When the time selection button is pressed for the first time, the curing time selection mode is activated. Instead of the curing program, the display now shows the curing time (see also Indicators on the handpiece). The intended curing time is selected by means of the time selection buttons. You may choose between 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 seconds, depending on the curing program. If the curing time is not changed for longer than 2 seconds, the display will again show the curing program.

Observe the Instructions for Use of the material applied when selecting the curing time (for selected materials, see Selecting the curing program). The curing times for composite materials apply to all shades and, if not men10

tioned otherwise in the Instructions for Use of the relevant material, apply to a maximum layer thickness of 2 mm. It may be possible to use shorter curing times in conjunction with certain light or transparent shades (see www.ivoclarvivadent.com for further details).

Generally, these specifications apply to situations where the emission window of the light probe is placed directly over the material to be polymerized. Increasing the distance between the light source and the material will require the curing time to be extended accordingly. For instance, if the distance of the material is 5 mm, the effective light output is reduced by approximately 50 %.

In this case, the stated curing time should be doubled.

The stated curing times apply only to the 13>8 mm Power-Booster light probe supplied with the kit.

Cure Memory function The most recently used settings are automatically saved in the combination of curing program and curing time. As a result, the last used curing program with the corresponding curing time is always available when switching on the curing light. Similarly, each curing program that is selected after the light unit has been switched on is available together with the curing time last used with it.

Start The light is switched on by means of the start button. The indicator on the display changes from the curing program to the (elapsed) curing time.

After the selected curing time has elapsed, the curing program is automatically ended. If desired, the light can be switched off before the curing time has elapsed by pressing the start button again.

The fan is activated simultaneously with the light. After the curing time has elapsed, the fan continues to run for some more time to cool the apparatus. The battery must not be removed as long as the fan is still running.

If preferred, the acoustic signals can be turned off. To turn off the acoustic signals, press and hold the start button for approximately 30 seconds while the light is off.

To turn the acoustic signals back on, press and hold the start button for another 30 seconds while the light is off.

Light output If the 13 > 8 mm Power-Booster light probe is used, the indicated light output fluctuates in the tolerance range of the LEDs by approximately ± 100 mW/cm2. The light output is controlled and maintained at a consistent level by the electronic components of the curing light.

If parallel-walled light probes are used (8, 10 or 13 mm), the indicated light output is reduced by approximately 50 %. The curing time should be doubled accordingly.

Measuring the light output The light output of bluephase 16i and the 13 > 8 mm Power-Booster light probe supplied can be checked with the light meter, which is integrated in the charging base.

For this purpose, place the tip of the light probe in contact with the light meter without applying pressure.

The indicator on the right side of the housing lights up green according to the light output measured (see Indicators on the charging base). If the measured value does not correspond with the expected light output, proceed as follows: – Check the selected curing program – Clean the light meter with a moist cloth – Clean any light probes which may be dirty (see Maintenance and cleaning) – Replace any damaged light probe with a new one If these measures do not improve the readings, please contact your dealer or local Service Center.

The light meter is not suitable for measuring the light output of other light-emitting devices or light probes.

Charging status of the battery With the handpiece switched on, the current charging status is shown on the display as follows (see Indicators on the handpiece): Battery fully charged (curing capacity of approximately 45 minutes) Battery half full Reserve If the curing capacity has dropped to approximately 5 minutes, the indicator of the handpiece starts blinking.

Maintenance and cleaning Empty battery If the battery is completely empty, the handpiece automatically switches to the stand-by mode. The light can no longer be activated and the curing program and curing time can no longer be set. The operating status shown in this picture is displayed for approximately 3 seconds when the unit is switched on . After that, the handpiece automatically switches to the stand-by mode. However, the handpiece can be used in the Click & Cure corded operation.

Click & Cure corded operation bluephase 16i can be used in corded operation at any time, but particularly when the battery is completely empty. For this purpose, remove the battery from the handpiece. Then remove the power pack from the underside of the charging base. Do not pull on the power cord.

Insert the connection plug straight into the handpiece until you hear and feel it click into place.

Make sure that no liquids or other foreign substances enter the handpiece or the charging base during cleaning (electrical shock hazard). Disconnect the charging base from the power source when cleaning it.

Housing Wipe the handpiece and charging base with a standard aldehyde-free disinfecting solution. Do not clean with highly aggressive solutions (e.g. solutions containing orange oil or solutions with an ethanol content of more than 50%), solvents (e.g. acetone), or pointed instruments, which damage or scratch the plastic. Clean dirty plastic parts with a soap solution.

Light probe Clean light probes with a disinfectant and a soft cloth.

Carefully remove any possible material residue, such as composite material, from the light probe with e.g. fingernails or a plastic spatula. Do not use sharp or pointed instruments, since they may scratch the surface of the light probe and thus reduce light transmission. Lightprobes and anti-glare protection may be autoclaved (e.g. 134 °C, 3 bar, 5 minutes).

Check light probes for damage. If the light probe is held against a light source and individual segments appear black, then the glass fibres are broken. In this case, the light probe has to be replaced with a new one.

Battery High temperatures adversely affect the service life of the battery. The ideal ambient temperature is between 15 °C and 30 °C. If the battery is too cold or too hot, the curing light might not work temporarily, even if the battery is fully charged (see What if …).

Disposal Dispose of unserviceable batteries and polymerization lights according to the corresponding legal requirements in your country. Please contact your dealer, local Service Center, or local disposal contractor.

During corded operation, the charging base can neither charge the battery nor conduct a light measurement, as it is not connected to a power source.

What if ‌?

If an error occurs, we recommend placing the handpiece along with the battery on the charging base for a short period (automatic reset of electronic components). It may be necessary to repeat this procedure a second time. Before doing so, remove the battery from the handpiece, clean all upper and lower battery contacts with a cloth dipped in alcohol and then reinsert the battery. If the error reappears, consult the troubleshooting guide below.

Warranty

Procedure in case of repair

The warranty period for bluephase 16i is 3 years from the date of purchase (battery 1 year). The warranty includes an LED operating life of 300 hours.

Malfunctions resulting from faulty material or manufacturing errors are repaired free of charge during the warranty period. The warranty does not provide the right to recover any material or non-material damage other than the ones mentioned.

The apparatus must only be used for the intended purpose.

Any other uses are contraindicated. The manufacturer does not accept any liability resulting from misuse and warranty claims cannot be accepted in such cases. This is particularly valid for – damage resulting from improper handling, especially incorrectly stored batteries (see Battery); – damage of components resulting from wear under standard operating conditions; – damage resulting from external factors, e.g. impact damage, dropping on the floor; – damage resulting from incorrect set-up or installation; – damage resulting from connecting the unit to a power supply whose voltage or frequency does not comply with those stated on the rating plate; – damage resulting from improper repairs or modifications that have not been carried out by a certified Service Center.

Repair work may only be carried out by a certified Ivoclar Vivadent Service Center. If case of a defect that cannot be rectified, please contact your dealer or local Service Center (see addresses on the reverse side).

A clear description of the defect or the conditions under which the defect occurred will facilitate locating the problem. Please enclose this description when returning the apparatus.

In case of a claim under warranty, the complete apparatus (handpiece, charging base, battery, power cord and power pack) must be returned, carriage paid, to the dealer or directly to Ivoclar Vivadent, together with a receipt of purchase.
