boyle family honored for gift to theatre A crowd of about 35 friends, relatives and college staff attended a ceremony today honoring Walter Durley and Hazel Marie Boyle posthumously for their contributions to Illinois Valley Community Colleg.

The Boyle’s bequest of over $620,000 to the IVCC Foundation helped fund major upgrades to the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre such as theatre seating, wooden wall treatments, LED house lighting and ADA accessibility.

“Durley’s embrace of IVCC was part of his core belief that higher education enhances lives,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran, emcee for the event. “His contributions to IVCC in life will carry on long after his death thanks to the provisions he made for the college in his will.”

Corcoran credited Durley’s nieces Nancy Hopkins and Sally Boyle for helping facilitate the bequest and ensuring proper recognition for their uncle and aunt. Hopkins and Boyle are daughters of Durley’s brother Francis.

Also speaking at the event were Director of Community Relations and Development Fran Brolley, theatre director Dr. David Kuester and Student Government Association President Xavier Braboy. A plaque honoring the Boyles, to be displayed near the main entrance to the Cultural Centre, was unveiled by Foundation director O.J. Stoutner.

Mr. Boyle, who died at age 94 in 2008, served 22 years on the IVCC Foundation and nine as a college trustee. A 10-term Putnam County State’s Attorney, he practiced law for more than 70 years.

Hazel Marie, who died in 1994 at age 83, taught kindergarten at Hennepin Elementary School from 1955 until retirement in 1976.

“Reflecting on his remarkable life, Durley, ever the country gentleman, said modestly, ‘Everyone has to work to make a community strong,’” Brolley remarked in his closing. “We were blessed the Boyles called our community home and embraced this college as if it were their own.”

IVCC Learning Commons employee Hannah Munson may have tutored you on your ENG-1002 midterm paper, but she has also tutored Middle Eastern children and prostitutes from Thailand.

Munson knew a childhood akin to many other Illinois Valley residents, but she always knew that she wanted to see the world and help people.

For this reason, when a family friend helped to found the Christian group Youth With a Mission (YWAM), Munson, at age 18, packed her bags and charged into the unknown.

When she first started with the mission group, Munson found while working with prostitutes in Thailand that not only did she want to help people, she wanted to help the people that society looked down upon.

Said Munson, “Women don’t really have a voice in the Middle East, and so I wanted to bring a voice to those women and to tell them that they are valuable… I worked with prostitutes—which, I’m not a prostitute—but I worked with them, helping them leave prostitution and find jobs and get educated.”

The goal of YWAM’s work with Thai prostitutes was to get them out of the profession and to educate them, to help them realize that with help, there were safer ways to make a living.

Munson explained, “We were able to help one of the prostitutes successfully leave prostitution, and now I think she might be in the US, going to school somewhere.”

But because of the self-discovery what Munson made in Thailand, at 21 years old, she made the switch to the Middle East, where she found yet another piece of herself. And this rumination actually led her back to IVCC after years away from home.

niu creates transfer incentives for +2.0 gpa

For IVCC students interested in transferring to Northern Illinois University, there is now an extra incentive to consider attending.

Through an agreement outlined by President Jerry Corcoran and Assistant Director of Admissions and Records Aseret Loveland, IVCC has joined a list of more than 20 other Illinois community colleges partnering with NIU to give students a seamless path to finishing their degrees.

With this partnership in place, any student with a 2.0 GPA, who also meet admissions requirements, with be guaranteed acceptance to NIU. Students interested in taking advantage of this should meet with counseling at least one year in advance of their planned transfer, in order to file paperwork stating their intent to do so.

By doing this, students will be able to work closely with counselors at both IVCC and NIU to ensure a smooth transition between the two institutions.

Students who hold a GPA of 3.2 will additionally be guaranteed a place in the University Honors Program at NIU, where they will have the opportunity to be taught in smaller classes, Honors Program exclusive scholarships, guaranteed admission to graduate school at NIU, along with many other benefits.

This program may be especially appealing for students who are already enrolled in the IVCC Honors Program.

Through the arrangement, students will be able to transfer the honors credit that they received while attending IVCC. If a student is interested in becoming involved with the IVCC Honors Program, which offers many of the same benefits to participants as NIU’s, they should contact program director Adam Oldaker.

Admission for spring enrollment into the sequence is rolling, with the final deadline for application shortly after the commencement of the spring semester.

Finally, NIU will be at IVCC on Nov. 15 and 29 in the Counseling Center, where they will be available to answer any program-specific questions students may have.

psych club to promote movember The Psychology Club is in the process of raising awareness for men’s health during the month of November.

They plan to do this with an array of small informal events in hopes of raising both awareness and funds for the Movember foundation.

To join the Pysch Club on their endeavor to spread awareness of men’s health participants can purchase their choice of a baked good on Monday, Nov. 19, or participate in “making a move for Movember.”

During this event, everyone is encouraged to make a commitment to either walk, run or roll 60 accumulative miles throughout the month. The Psych Club decided to arrange this event in hopes to raise awareness for the 60 men every hour who are lost to suicide.

‘writers resist’ hosted Writers Resist was originally an online journal that came into being shortly after the 2016 election, and the best of the pieces found there can be found in this new anthology. The College Democrats, Sigma Kappa Delta and River Currents became sponsors in order to have this event at the college after being approached by Marydale Stewart, who is one of the editors of this anthology. She read her published poem at the event, and Sam Barbour performed some pieces relating to the theme of the anthology. Dave McClure, Lonny Cain and Paul Wheeler all read relevant poetry and prose.

Students from multiple clubs and activities were able to take part in the 10th annual Illinois Valley Community College Etiquette Dinner on Oct. 25, 2018 in CTC 124 and 125.

This event is put together each year

by Lisa Witalka from Career Services.

When students arrived they were able to partake in a social hour in CTC 124 starting at 5:30 p.m.

After social hour was finished, students went into CTC 125 for dinner and a presentation, which focused on different tips and tricks to impress future interviewers in a professional dinner or interview setting.

This presentation was done by Bob Reese and Cory Tomasson, faculty members at IVCC. DeMilio’s catered this event, serving students and giving them the option of soup, salad, a main entree and dessert.

and faculty and staff members from IVCC served as the professionals sitting with the students.

“In my estimation, the Etiquette Dinner continues to improve each year, and this year’s event was nothing short of outstanding. It truly is a wonderful example of selflessness on the part of our community’s local employers who attend and provide our students with such valuable college and career advice.

I’ve attended the event for five years, and I still learned something new,” said Mark Grzybowski, vice president for student services.

Students had the same opinion. Angel Kizer, an elementary education major said, “It was a very helpful, informative event that will definitely be useful to me in the future.

“Even though I am not in the business field, I learned not only etiquette but communication and interview skills. Also, the facilitators of the event were very helpful and it was more relaxed and enjoyable than I expected.”

e War on cringe culture d i t o r i a l new programs to come remember In this ever-changing political and social climate, it’s difficult to be sure of anything that you see and hear lately, but one thing that I know for certain is that you have seen a preteen do a Fortnight dance sometime in the last month.

Children have been taking a lot of teasing and criticism over this trend that makes them happy, but if I told you that, you might ask, “What’s new?”

Youthful trends have always had a negative stigma around them that has recently been labeled “cringe culture.”

This phrase represents the idea that although a person might be doing something that harms no one, a witness might contract some second-hand embarrassment from that action and label it as cringy.

Most of us are guilty of this labeling, but there must be a point where we ask ourselves what is so wrong with a Fortnight dance—or in the case of Gen Z college students, what was so wrong with Gangnam Style—or in the case of many millenials, what was so wrong with enjoying Twilight?

Now that midterms have passed, I hope we have all officially settled into the daily routines of IVCC. Since my last article, a lot has occurred at the college, including a fantastic board meeting on Oct. 11.

This month’s board meeting included an amazing presentation by Fran Brolley regarding IVCC’s foundation. One of the college’s newest scholarships and one many are proud of is the scholarship for incoming Illinois State Scholars.

This year the Foundation awarded $1,000 to 23 different students qualifying for this magnificent scholarship. Also at this month’s board meeting state Sen. Sue Rezin was

But instead of returning to that youthful embarrassment upon finding a preteen partaking in a pop culture trend, we should instead encourage them to do what they love.

Unless the trend is harmful like 2014’s “pass-out challenge,” wherein teens would knock themselves out for the high and possibility of going viral, there is nothing wrong with following social crazes.

To borrow an idea from YouTube comedy mogul CollegeHumor’s “Defender of the Basic” video, it’s perfectly okay to define your tastes by what is current in pop culture, but if you make fun of and avoid every pop trend, you are defining your tastes the same way.

So let bygones be bygones, let cringy be cringy and let basic be basic. Let the trends be what they are going to be.

Young teens are going through enough without a hipster 20-year old telling them that what they love is just a pointless fad.

ivcc’s fall play caps halloween season

Something wicked came to the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Center Oct. 26-28. Don Grant Zellmer, IVCC theatre director, put an unusual twist on the department’s annual Halloween show by doing the play “Something Wicked This Way Comes” by Ray Bradbury.

Starring Steve Seaborn, Jake Jakielski, Patrick Foley and Adam Paden, and featuring Summer Hoagland-Abernathy and Tricia Kelly, the cast was full of IVCC alumni and current students.

“Something Wicked” follows two high-school boys, Jim Nightshade and Will Halloway, as an unsettling carnival arrives in their small, midwestern town. Things quickly turn ominous, and the boys uncover a sinister plot that threatens not only their lives but everyone they know and love.

Assistant Director Chad Brokaw comment, “‘Something Wicked’ took a lot of hard work, but I think it paid off rather well. The cast and crew were one of the best groups of people I’ve worked with. It shows how much can be accomplished when people work well together.”

I enjoyed the show and thought it did a great job crafting an atmospheric experience. The production employed some exciting special effects, such as paper that burst into flames.

I also appreciated that the play retained the complexities and symbolism that were in the original novel. It really felt like I was watching an intricate book play out before my eyes.

disappointed.

“Venom” works best as a comedy with some fight scenes thrown in. Eddie can be ridiculous and dramatic at times, and Venom gives some of the funniest lines in the film.

Viewers often forget that Venom is extremely violent, and I quietly rooted for Eddie and Venom.

IVCC student Noah Fabris agreed, commenting, “I was honestly surprised by it. The movie made me really like Venom when all this time, I thought it was just purely [evil]. It can also be not so bad. The whole thing was a [wild] ride from start to finish.”

Eddie is also a very relatable character—he’s a mess. He doesn’t have his life together at all, and for the majority of the movie, he’s struggling. At first, Venom only makes Eddie’s life more ridiculous— and amusing to watch.

I recommend this movie for anyone who wants to watch a comedy disguised as a superhero action movie.

A substantial amount of changes could soon be occurring for the IVCC Men’s Soccer team after an abysmal 2018 season.

The team finished the season with a record of 1-17-1, losing 4-0 in the first round of the regional tournament to nationally ranked Triton. Though injuries were a factor throughout the season, Coach Tim Cottingim stressed more of a need for commitment going forward.

“We need a higher level of commitment,” said Cottingim. He stated that there were players on the team that were either missing games, on or off the team,

or quitting the team throughout the course of the season.

The two big issues for the team this season was the lack of scoring and bad defense. The team only averaged 1.25 goals per game this year, while giving up an average of 3.81 goals per game. “We had three of our starting four defenders returning and what we thought to be better goal keeping,” said Cottingim. “For whatever reason we never did get it right for very long during the season.”

Cottingim is unsure if that will be an issue for next season, though he plans to make defense a focal point of the recruiting class for next season. He said that it is a work in progress.

As for the offense, Rafa Puga led the team with five goals and 12 points. Out-

side of Puga, the team lacked a natural striker, which created problems when he was forced into the net. “A lot of people were playing there by committee and when [[Puga]] had to go into the goal full-time, we just did not have enough firepower to find the back of the net often enough,” said Coach Cottingim. He plans to recruit more players to remedy the problems on offense and defense.

As for freshman next season, Cottingim has faith that Puga, Ruti Arteaga, and Fidel Mora can be counted on to “provide experience for us.” Mora finished the season second on the team in assists with four. Coach Cottingim also named Oscar Pizano as a name to look out for next season. Cottingim noted that Pizano “improved as the season progressed but

needs to step up next year.”

Although this season was forgetful, Coach Cottingim is looking at what he can do to change the culture for the team.

“We just need more players to compete, more depth,” said Cottingim. “We need more competition within practice.” Cottingim also stated that there will also be more accountability going forward to prevent the commitment issues from happening again.

“It won’t be tolerated when someone does not comply with their minimum standards academically and hopefully, we have the depth to not tolerate a lack of performance, Cottingim said. “It may sound harsh, but that is the goal, and frankly, we need to have all of that to be competitive.”

IV Leader Senior Photographer Kyle Russell won two fifth place awards and an honorable mention Oct. 27 in the national Associated Collegiate Press Photo of the Year contest. In sports photography, Russell won a fifth and honorable mention for photos published in the spring from a University of Illinois gymnastics meet. In news photography, Russell won a fifth place for a photo taken at a Polar Plunge event. Russell was honored at the ACP’s annual convention in Louisville, Ky. This is the second year he has been recognized in the national photo competition. This is the second year Russell has won awards at the national conference. This year, he was the only community college student recognized, and he competed against photographers from several schools including Syracuse University, Harvard, Michigan State University, and University of Kentucky.

IvCC eagles host alumni game

The IVCC Eagles basketball team hosted its annual Alumni game on Oct. 26 with the Alumni coming away with the win, 98-90.

Corey McCrarey led the way in scoring for the alumni with 18 points along with Alex Schwab who scored 13 points, and Austin Stewart with 12 points.

For the Eagles, Ty Bland lead the game in scoring with 27 points, Yansyn Taylor followed with 16, and Christian Walker with 11.

Former Alumni Austin Stewart said about the game, “It was a great experience, I had fun and it was nice to back on this court. It’s been a long time.”

Coach Chris Herman also noted, “There was a lot of talent on the floor with that alumni team, that first group came out

kind of sluggish, we got them down 13-0.

“I think we got a false sense of security, a kind of fool’s gold, because I knew when the [second unit] got in there they would turn it around.”

Herman also noted that a couple of players from the alumni team have or were close to playing pro basketball.

So, he was not really disappointed in the team, but, he was not happy with the defensive intensity of the team.

Herman so far from what he’s seen so far from the Eagles in the preseason is most unhappy with the defense.

Herman said, “Defensively, we kind of take some plays off every now and then, not everybody but... we just can’t afford to do that because we are kind of a small team.”

He also noted that they need to work on free throws, as he pointed out they were 5-4 in the nine scrimmages.

Herman continued that they lost a cou-

ple games due to missing free throws and that’s what cost the Eagles the alumni game.

Stewart just from seeing the Eagles sees the potential saying, “I see a lot of potential, a lot of good pieces, a lot of good shooters, all they have to do is come together.

“So, when they come together and get a little bit more emotion into them, they’ll be alright. Their shots are going to fall and it’s going to be great.”

Coach Herman echoes that statement saying, “I like our team, I think we are going to be fine, we got a good group of kids.”

The Eagles will kick off the season starting Sat. Nov. 3. at home versus Morton and then play again three days later at home against Milwaukee Area Technical College.

Lady eagles ranked 5th in District a

The Lady Eagles volleyball team is 15-13 on the season as of press time.

The Lady Eagles are heading into the Region B semi-finals ranked 5th in District A. The Lady Eagles will play Bryant & Stratton college at 2 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 3 at College of Lake County.

Eagles sophomores were recognized Oct. 16 at their last regular season home contest.

Sophomores on the team include Riley Johnson, Kaitlyn Edgcomb, Jessica Garber, Tori Coble, Jenna Lusietto and Abby Hoscheid.

Lusietto leads the team with 376 kills while Garber has 899 assists.

Johnson leads the team with 471 digs.

The Eagles are coached by Erin Polte.
