From THE PRINCIPAL As we approach the half-way point of the year, it has been most pleasing to note the myriad of activities and learning opportunities occurring across the School – from House Athletics to Camps, from unique Science experiments to International Service Learning trips, from engaging classroom activities to Cadets and the list goes on.

Along with this diverse breadth of opportunity, a key strategic focus throughout 2016 is the continuing development and unrelenting emphasis on improving classroom practice, including: • The introduction of an appraisal system for all staff.

• Strategies to ensure that we continue to build upon our outstanding academic results.

• Clearly articulating the 'Essential Learning' of an Ivanhoe Education including Academia, Service Learning and Leadership.

• The development of an Ivanhoe Learner Profile.

• Ensuring the key principles underpinning the Round Square are taught throughout the curriculum.

• Embedding Global Citizenship Education across the School.

While there will continue to be a clear academic focus, we also intend to introduce initiatives that will consolidate Ivanhoe Grammar School’s commitment to developing young people of character, a commitment which has not wavered for over 100 years.

In establishing the School, the Reverend Sydney Buckley commented, “In a recent issue of a daily newspaper, character training was described as a sideline in education. It is not a sideline. It is at the very heart and core of education."

In the last 20 years, the development of character at Ivanhoe has taken on an international element through our involvement in Round Square, exchange programs, intercultural and service learning trips and the School’s commitment to Cambodia.

Following a consultative process with parents, staff, students and alumni through surveys and focus groups, a Global Leadership Centre will be established at Ivanhoe Grammar School in the latter part of this year. The Centre will cater for all students from ELC to Year 12 and will ensure that all students graduate with clearly defined competencies in global citizenship, service, experiential learning (local, national, international) and leadership.

I take this opportunity to thank all members of the Ivanhoe Community for your support and best wishes in this my first year as Principal.

TO THE CLASS OF 2015 I am very pleased to report that the 255 students who completed their Year 12 studies in VCE and IB in 2015 performed to an extremely high standard.

Congratulations to the Dux of The Ridgeway Campus, Lucas Yong who achieved a perfect score of 99.95 and to the Dux of Plenty Campus, Maren Oghanna who achieved an ATAR of 98.7. The Dux of IB Diploma, Tara Tigani achieved an IB score equivalent to ATAR of 98.85.

Overall 22 per cent scored an ATAR of 95 or above, 37 per cent achieved an ATAR of 90 or above and 58 per cent achieved an ATAR of 80 or above.

There were 12 perfect study scores over the VCE and IB subjects.

I was very pleased to attend the 2016 Premier’s VCE Awards on Thursday 28 April to congratulate Lucas Yong who received a Top All Round VCE High Achiever Award for a perfect VCE ATAR of 99.95 and Benjamin Summers and Angus McArthur who both received Study Awards for perfect scores in English and Art respectively.

Kevin will fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Mr Neil Faulkner last year, who has given 12 wonderful years of service including ten years as Treasurer. Kevin is a past student and 1997 School Captain of Ivanhoe Grammar School, commencing at Buckley House from Prep and graduating in 1997 from Year 12 as one of the very first students to complete the International Baccalaureate at the School.

In continuing the tradition, Kevin’s eldest son Jamie is currently at the Early Learning Centre in Buckley House and William (3 years old) and Eliza (8 months) are yet to commence at the School.

Kevin is the Director of Mass Market Mobility at Telstra Corporation, Australia’s leading telecommunications provider. In this role, Kevin is responsible for managing Telstra’s 7 million postpaid mobile customers in the consumer and small business segments, who collectively generate over $6 billion in annual revenue.

His team has accountability for all postpaid handheld and mobile broadband products and offerings; covering product development, marketing, pricing and distribution strategy.

Kevin has worked with Telstra for over eight years across a range of roles, primarily in strategy and corporate development, most recently as Director of Corporate Development.

Kevin is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia and commenced his career in Investment Banking with Macquarie Bank where he worked in mergers and acquisitions.

The Board of Governors is pleased to have secured Kevin’s services for the School and is looking forward to his contribution in the years to come.

Farewell RAE BYROM After 12 years as Communications and Marketing Manager at Ivanhoe Grammar School, Rae Byrom has left to take up the position of Director of Development at Mentone Grammar School.

The landscape is ever changing and Rae has been able to keep the School at the forefront of these changes which has seen our digital presence grow significantly which is reflected in the enormous interest in the School.

In her important cross campus role with the School, Rae has led a team that has implemented significant changes in the way we present the School, communicate to our community and connect to the wider community.

In addition, Rae’s contribution to the other special projects such as the School’s Centenary Year and rebranding has been most significant and very much appreciated.

Jill McConnell joined Plenty Campus as Chaplain at the beginning of 2016.

Pieter Keuneman began as Chaplain at Buckley House in Term 4, 2013.

Previous work roles have included school chaplaincy at Greenhills Primary School, various positions in children, youth and family work within the Uniting Church, and teaching. Jill has a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Theology (from Ridley College) and finds school chaplaincy is the ideal blend for her skills, training and passions.

He is married to Sarah and they are expecting their first child in June which is very exciting. He completed his studies at Ridley Anglican College in 2012 and holds undergraduate degrees in both Ministry and Theology and also a Diploma in Welfare and Counselling which significantly benefits his pastoral care work with students, staff and parents.

Jill enjoys the challenge of creating Chapel services that are relevant, engaging and creative and looks forward to being able to share her passions for many social justice issues including the environment. She feels incredibly privileged to be working in such a beautiful environment and to be serving and leading in this unique form of ministry.

Jill is married, with two beautiful daughters and two delightful dogs who love being walked. She lives in an intentional Christian community in the heart of Olympic Village in West Heidelberg and attends a thriving Uniting Church in Fairfield where she regularly plays music and organises the children’s ministry activities.

Jill is on Campus Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays and her door is always open for a chat. She can also be contacted via email, which is checked daily (jill.mcconnell@ivanhoe.com.au), as she is always grateful for feedback and suggestions as she is keen to continually learn how best to serve this community and looks forward to building significant relationships with many in the community.

Pieter is currently studying a Masters in Primary Education through Charles Sturt University, which he aims to complete in 2018. Upon his appointment to Ivanhoe, he received authorisation from the Archbishop of Melbourne to be a Licensed Anglican Chaplain. It is his greatest honour to serve the Buckley House community, providing a comprehensive Chaplaincy program that caters to the spiritual and emotional needs of 21st century learners.

His belief is that Chaplaincy provides the skills necessary to assist students in their ability to deal with life's most difficult circumstances successfully, whilst promoting empathy and compassion amongst all.

He conducts age specific weekly Chapel services involving students in up front worship roles including Bible readings, performances of special musical items, plays and whole school prayers. These services instil the values of faith, hope and love, providing a space where Positive Psychology character strengths can be taught alongside Biblical literature.

Pieter loves his work at Ivanhoe and hopes to serve the School community long into the future, as he believes this is truly a wonderful community to belong to.

KIRSTEN WINKETT

Pieter is on campus Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Ridgeway Campus Kirsten Winkett began as Chaplain at The Ridgeway Campus in May 2015. Prior to her role at Ivanhoe she was a chaplain at an Anglican girls school in Melbourne for four years. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Youth Affairs and a Postgraduate Diploma of Theology. Kirsten has worked in a variety of roles working with young people and their families in welfare and community development both internationally, interstate and locally.

Kirsten is married and has three teenage children whom she loves to hang out with at different sporting events. She and her family have lived overseas both in Scotland and the USA which gave them an opportunity to meet some amazing people and travel to some beautiful parts of the world.

She is passionate about supporting children, young people and their families as they experience life, explore the world and examine how faith can play a meaningful part in their lives. Kirsten is on Campus Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week.

TEACHTECH The TeachTechPlay Conference, which was designed by teachers for teachers, was held on The Ridgeway Campus during the April school holidays. With a stellar line up of international keynotes speakers and expert teachers, the educational technology conference attracted over three hundred teachers with some visitors travelling from as far away as the USA, the UK and Hong Kong.

The conference opened with rousing words from Mr Gerard Foley, challenging the crowd to reimagine schooling for the future. International keynotes, Alice Keeler and Mark Anderson echoed this sentiment and awed the crowd with their capacity to use technology to impact on student learning. The calibre of the session presenters was second to none with Ivanhoe being represented by myself and Jason Coleman. The only headache for delegates was which session to attend as the line-up was so strong.

The team from TeachTechPlay connected initially online and their monthly web show has a tremendous online following.

So it was no surprise that the social media presence of the conference was significant.

Many of the teachers use Twitter as way to share stories, resources and to connect.

Throughout the conference, the conference hashtag #TTPlay trended number one in Australia and number six in the USA.

A wonderful feature of the conference was the student participation. Year 7 Multimedia students designed and 3D printed original keepsakes for the conference delegates with the keepsakes designed to get shy teachers to introduce themselves to new people. Buckley House Digital Leaders, Mia Giannopoulos, Joel Alberti, Carey Thompson and Sugeesh Atapattu documented the conference through a Touchcast TV series, where they completed keynote reviews and delegate interviews.

I also co-presented with the Digital Leaders on using Touchcast in the classroom to create a TV studio. Three students from Year 7, Luke Cannalonga, Ben Ross and Will Torrington worked with Stuart Lamont from IT Services to deliver a student keynote to close the conference.

The keynote presentation titled, 'From one learner to another', was designed to show teachers what students see when they see their teachers learning.

From timelapses to Go Pros, the video showcased the amazing talents of the three boys and echoed the words of the closing keynote from Day 1, Ryan Trainor that 'all children have a superpower.'

THE

TRANSITION TO TERTIARY

Students and staff at Ivanhoe Grammar School's Plenty Campus have started 2016 with a ground-breaking new facility which has been designed to cater for the needs of Senior Years students as they transition to tertiary education.

After more than 16 months’ construction, the School was honoured to have the building officially opened by the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AM on Tuesday 22 March.

The building has been designed to meet the specific learning needs of students in Years 10, 11 and 12 students as they prepare for tertiary education and move to more independent learning.

The Deputy Principal/Head of Plenty Campus, Mrs Deborah Sukarna and a team of teachers researched how buildings could influence and support innovative, collaborative teaching methods and worked with the Architect McBride Charles Ryan to design a flexible and inviting learning space. In particular, exemplary science spaces were visited and researched which influenced the outcomes of the design of the laboratories and associated preparation areas.

The Round

Mrs Deborah Sukarna said, "We are absolutely thrilled with our Senior Years and Science Centre. Underpinning the learning spaces is a clearly defined pedagogy for teaching and learning that is reflected in current educational research. Classrooms are modelled on tertiary settings allowing for flexible and collaborative learning spaces with small break out areas for private study and social hubs. It has been wonderful to see our students and staff using The Round, in a myriad of ways."

From a Year 12 Biology or Prep Science class, in the new cutting edge Science precinct, to impromptu concerts held in the central courtyard, this centre truly has something for everyone. Learning spaces are interconnected and the classroom design and new technology engages our students in innovative learning that reflects life beyond Ivanhoe.”

The Round is situated in the heart of the Plenty Campus and its circular shape reflects the School’s original masterplan. Rather than just adopting a circular pattern, the architects overlaid angular geometry to define the central courtyards and light wells and the multitude of learning spaces. This allowed transparency into and between the spaces, interconnectivity of learning areas, and multiple use. This flexible layout and bold design encourages further collaboration between teachers and students and facilitates classroom discussion.

Upstairs is the Science Precinct incorporating Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories, Primary and Middle Years laboratory, central preparation area as well as the specifically designed room for the teaching of Psychology. Science staff are located in the middle of this precinct to allow for ease of access by students and collaboration between the teachers.

Each of the Science laboratories have been designed with their specific requirements in mind. The Physics laboratory has a long bench space that can easily facilitate motion and other experiments.

The Biology room has a collaborative horseshoe shaped design which allows for flexibility of use for either practical teaching or theory. The Chemistry laboratory is adjacent to the classroom so students move easily between theory and practical lessons.

Downstairs are the multipurpose classrooms, all organised and interconnected to allow for a huge variety of teaching and learning and with the latest learning technologies seamlessly integrated throughout. In addition to the new classrooms, there are breakout and private study areas which senior students regularly make use of.

The central courtyard or hub of the building allows for outdoor passive recreation for students and is also the venue for informal lunchtime concerts and events.

This outstanding 21st Century building was built by Building Engineering Pty Ltd. Property Manager, John Atherton said, "The building has been influenced by learning spaces developed at universities and is one of the most modern facilities provided for Years 10-12 anywhere."

The feedback from staff and students has also been wonderful. Year 10 student Max said, "It feels like a University; I love the natural light; how good are the private study spaces; the labs are like what they have at Melbourne University."

Staff have been equally enthusiastic saying, “the integrated technology is magnificent and the breakout spaces and social hubs encourage teaching moving effortlessly between indoors and out.�

"The students have adapted effortlessly to the new building; they are using the break out areas and social spaces really well and they are comfortable in the centre."

This vibrant building has already enhanced student learning and has provided inspiration to the whole School.

Drop In Centre opened at The Ridgeway Campus

The Wellbeing/Drop In Centre was opened to students on Monday 18 April.

Establishing the Wellbeing/Drop In Centre is integral to Ivanhoe’s proactive approach to wellbeing. The Centre will consolidate and strengthen the wellbeing programs already being implemented by providing a friendly, welcoming and inclusive place where students can connect with each other and receive support and advice.

Given the multidimensional nature of wellbeing, the Centre will over time become dynamic in its function, encouraging connections, offering students and staff a dedicated space to practise mindfulness, group work such as resilience to combat anxiety and bullying. It will provide students with information on important lifestyles issues including the misuse of alcohol and other drugs, mental health and socially relevant subjects such as gender awareness, gender diversity, respectful relationships, body image and peer pressure.

Information from reputable resources that underpin our proactive and innovative approach to student wellbeing such as Headspace, Beyond Blue, Reach Out, ACMA, Young and Well CRC will be available to students. The reality is that one in four Australians will experience mental illness requiring intervention between the ages of 16-24 years in Australia. By 2030 the World Health Organisation has predicted that depression is on a pathway to being the top global disease. The future of our students depends on what we do today.

Our new Wellbeing/ Drop In Centre will reinforce and strengthen the School’s commitment to promote an innovative best practice approach to nurturing wellbeing and learning, developing students who are equipped to function well, achieve success and flourish.

The Centre is open on Mondays from 9.00am - 3.30pm and Wednesdays and Fridays during recess and lunch. Susanna Mullner is the newly appointed school psychologist who will be working in the Centre two days a week. Kirsten Winkett, the School Chaplain will also be available three days a week.

SCHOOL THE RIDGEWAY CAMPUS SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD

In a recent trip to Stockholm I spent half the day at the Nobel Museum. At that time my thinking was meandering around the possibilities of staging Songs for a New World and what we could achieve creatively and artistically. To consolidate this thinking however, I needed something to hold the many fragmented ideas of the piece together. Every installation (in that dignified space which is devoted to human potential and learning) was galvanised by one consistent thread: hope.

The celebrated biochemist (and Nobel Laureate) Roger Kornberg said that "Hope is the source of human progress." This word struck a chord in me and held the promise of linking each of the stories together.

Songs for a New World is comprised of 15 separate tales all expressed in song, each complete in their own right, depicting the complexities and struggles of existence.

Some of the songs are funny, some are touching, and others are funky and energised.

All of them are connected by the theme of hope.

This year the students were hands-on with the development of the ideas and images that merged to create this vivid, stunning theatre work. The fact that our rehearsal period coincided with the horror of events in the Middle East and the massive exodus out of Syria by desperate people struck a chord in the thinking and the awareness of the cast. Many times during rehearsals, one could hear a pin drop in the room as ideas were floated, exchanged, debated and absorbed. This led to a shared vision for what we were trying to communicate and helped to focus the potentially disparate nature of the piece.

Buckley Hall was transformed into something striking and different; a landscape for storytelling that was panoramic, immediate and shadowy. But theatre is most of all a collaborative experience. Many hands worked to build the shapes that lit so wonderfully and created an atmosphere to serve each unfolding story. It’s no secret that the parent body at The Ridgeway Campus is second to none. When we put out the call for help, the response is always immediate, positive, encouraging and supportive. Our celebration is their celebration. Our success is unequivocally a shared success.

As one enters the Nobel Museum there is a simple plaque that says: 'All people leave their mark on the world. We have all met people whose actions, values, opinions, and way of thinking have shaped us. We meet some of these people daily, others only briefly, and some we never meet other than through text and images. What kind of legacy do we want to leave behind? Can we influence what our own legacy will be?'

If our future is in the hands of the young people who are at the vanguard of the performing arts at Ivanhoe, then there is hope for the future. I’m incredibly proud of the students and the creative team here. Their performance work is a creative, expressive experience for them, but also a gift to you.

PLENTY CAMPUS INTO THE WOODS The Plenty Campus production of Sondheim’s Into the Woods was a great success. With over 100 students from Years 7 to Year 12 involved on stage, in the orchestra or back stage, this was one of our biggest productions.

Students enjoyed performing at the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre from April 21 to April 23. The enthusiastic audiences were treated to three outstanding performances from actors and musicians alike, as these students made this Musical come to life under the creative vision and expert direction of James Chappel.

In this musical production, well known fairy tale characters pursue their goal of living 'Happily Ever After.' Sondheim uses spoken dialogue as well as songs to give the characters more depth.

A narrator (John Paras) is employed in a pantomimic style and his role includes being an external observer as well as a character.

Cinderella (Rose Kenney) goes to the ball and captures the heart of the Prince Charming (Jake Minarelli), Jack (Mika Facchinetti), supported by his Mother (Celia Robertson), climbs the beanstalk and finds a land of giants and gold. Little Red Riding Hood (Lily Robertson) survives her clash with the wolf (Daniel Grimes) and Rapunzel (Laney Facchinetti) manages to escape her tower with the aid of her handsome prince (Hugh Dundon).

The Baker (Will Pyers) and his wife (Rubi Dinardo) are childless, and pursue their own goal of having a child. The Witch (Casey Davine) will lift the spell cast on the childless couple if they can find the required items. The messages of tolerance and understanding that are encapsulated in this production encouraged students to work together, not only to produce an amazing show, but to take these messages with them into their own lives.

Into The Woods was a very demanding musical for all performers, both on stage and in the orchestra and the students approached the challenges with enthusiasm and dedication. They presented their characters with maturity and understanding and the standard of singing and acting was first class.

The large number of students in the orchestra worked hard on this challenging score and I am delighted with the high standard of their playing. Performing in a musical alongside professional musicians is an experience they will never forget.

Actors and musicians were well supported by a large number of students who helped back stage with sound and lighting, sets, props, hair and makeup.

Plenty Musical Productions are always a team effort, and thanks must also go to the parents, staff and alumni who helped in so many ways behind the scenes. This included set building and painting, costumes, props, photos and meals for students. In particular, the parents support group, In Tune, worked tirelessly to provide meals for students and staff, and also take photos which remain a lasting memento of the production. This community involvement reflected the message that when we all work together we can accomplish more than we can as individuals.

Year 9 Plenty Campus student, Edward Darby had the enviable position of being chosen as a Ballkid for the 2016 Australian Open that ran from 16 – 29 January. Over 3,500 people apply and only 380 people get in after rigorous trials and a training period. Edward’s favourite match was on Court 2 between Sam Groth and Lleyton Hewitt, though it was a bit scary having Sam Groth serve the ball at 201 and 230 km/h. Edward admires Roger Federer as he thinks Federer is one of the best players of all time and he had humble beginnings starting out as a Ballkid at Wimbledon.

Swimming sensation, Chau Huynh received a Recognition Award from the Sports Minister for Victoria, Hon John Eren on Friday 19 February for her performances at the recent School Pacific Games in Adelaide and the Victoria State Age Championships in Melbourne. She joined Plenty Campus as a Year 7 student in 2016 and has been a welcome addition to Ivanhoe’s Swim team.

Annual Cadet Camp The Annual Cadet Camp ran from Saturday 19 March to Thursday 24 March at Mt Pilot National Park in the Hume region. This is a popular event and this year was no exception with students enjoying a range of activities, including bushcraft and living in the field, camouflage and concealment exercises, a confidence course as well as day and night orienteering exercises.

During Term 2 the inaugural meeting of the Environment and Sustainability Group was held in The Ridgeway Campus Library.

The group's aim is to continue with championing recycling, re-using and reducing waste.

The group took no time at all to get started and has worked on a number of projects, such as, running a plant stall to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund and collecting second-hand children’s books for schools in Fiji.

The group is on the lookout for new members so if you’re interested go to The Ridgeway Campus Library to sign up.

Anne Harvey-Nagl Buckley House had a very special visit from world renowned Concertmaster and Violinist Anne Harvey-Nagl who performed for students on Wednesday 16 March. She played an exquisite program of Viennese music and took the time to talk about her journey to the Vienna Philharmonic and then how she went on to become Concertmaster at the Volksoper Vienna. Anne was incredibly generous with her time, answering the many questions from enthralled students who were left with the message that the key to success is hard work and dedication.

Top Class Two theatre studies alumni, Natasha Findlay and Raushaan Seychell from the Class of 2015 were selected to perform at the Top Class concert in the VCE Season of Excellence. Raushaan’s piece is a Shakespearean monologue from Julius Caesar which he re-contextualised to Fascist Italy when it was under the brutal rule of Benito Mussolini. Tash chose a naturalist piece from Salt Creek Murders by Melissa Reeves which captured the frustrations of a young woman in the Victorian era, trapped in a loveless marriage.

This was a huge honour for these talented students to appear in an event made up of the most exceptional works selected from over 150 performers from across the State.

Honours Assemblies

Honours Assemblies ran at Plenty Campus on Friday 12 February and The Ridgeway Campus on Monday 15 February. It was wonderful to honour students from the Class of 2015. Dux of The Ridgeway Campus, Lucas Yong who received an ATAR of 99.95 (which is the maximum possible score and places him in the top 0.05% of Australia) returned to receive the BA Meikle Award for Chemistry and VCE Unit 3/4 Subject Award for Physics. Proxime Accessit of The Ridgeway Campus was Ben Summers who received an ATAR of 99.75. DUX of the Plenty Campus Maren Oghanna achieved an ATAR of 98.7 and was formally presented with a VCE Unit 3/4 Subject Award for Physics. The Plenty Campus Proxime Accessit was Emmanuel Saka. Honours Assemblies also recognise many other awards such as Rhodes Awards, Subject Awards and General Excellence Awards.

Campus Videos Ivanhoe’s landscape has changed over time and to capture the innovative new facilities and beautiful grounds, campus videos were filmed in late 2015 and early 2016 to showcase the School online. The virtual tours capture the essence of each of the three campuses, highlighting the many beautiful new facilities and grounds as well as focusing on the breadth of academic and co-curricular opportunities at the School.

Governor Dessau’s International Student Reception at Government House On Wednesday 2 March, international students Kim Wang, Andrea Pan, Joyce Lam and Shota Imai attended the Victorian International School Student Welcome Event at Government House as invited guests of the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency, The Honourable Linda Dessau AM. At the start of proceedings, Governor Dessau gave a very warm welcome to all in the very prestigious and ornate ball room, prior to morning tea being served in the garden. Kim, Andrea, Joyce and Shota were able to tour the state apartments, including the dining room and also the billiard room, mingling with other international students and Consular representatives.

Ms Judith Graley, MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier also welcomed the students along with an address by International Student Leadership Award recipient, Ms Essie Ma, who challenged all students to take up the amazing opportunities schools, such as Ivanhoe Grammar School, have on offer.

NEWS AROUND Shave for a Cure

On Wednesday 11 March teachers and students put their support behind The World’s Greatest Shave. There were plenty of options for people wanting to get involved, such as having your head shaved, hair cut or coloured, or sponsoring a participant. Year 12 student, Georgia Sanders raised $1,550 which was an amazing effort. Georgia cut off her pony tail which was 30cm long and donated it to make a wig for a child suffering from cancer.

Overall, the School raised over $3000 with all proceeds going towards research into finding better treatments, a cure for Leukaemia and other related blood disorders.

Jason Ball On Friday 11 March the charismatic, Jason Ball visited Plenty Campus and presented to Senior Years and Middle Years students on Homophobia.

Jason Ball is an Australian Rules Footballer, a LGBTI and mental health advocate, and political candidate. He is a passionate advocate for anti-homophobic messaging in the AFL and Beyond Blue Ambassador.

He is currently standing as the Australian Greens candidate for the next Australian federal election in the division of Higgins. His presentation resonated with students and there was a buzz on campus after his talk as staff and students discussed the topics he raised.

Upstanding Kids Standing desks were purchased by the OIGA from a charity called Upstanding Kids which was founded by one of the School’s esteemed old boys, Peter Parker ('89). Research shows that apart from the health benefits, when placed in classrooms students are less distracted and more focused while working. So far the desks have been used at Buckley House and placed in libraries at The Ridgeway and Plenty Campus for students to test out and trial.

ANZAC Day Services ANZAC services were held across the School on Friday 22 April. The day started with Buckley House hosting a service that is shared with grandparents of students from Prep to Year 2. Shortly after services were conducted at The Ridgeway and at Plenty Campus.

Principal, Gerard Foley, spoke about the significance of ANZAC Day and remembering those who have served for our country. Plenty Campus Cadets Unit continued their tradition of supporting the Whittlesea ANZAC Day march, as well as the service at Laurimar and the dawn service at Epping on ANZAC Day.

Great School Library Award The Lillian Foote Library at The Ridgeway Campus was thrilled to receive a special certificate recognising it as one of Australia’s Great School Libraries.

The Great School Libraries campaign was run by the FAIR group (Freedom of Access to Information & Resources). The library was celebrated for having fully trained teacher-librarians guiding its teaching and learning programs, fully resourced wide reading and research programs, a wide range of extracurricular activities like Makerspace, Library Leaders and Chess Club, flexible, welcoming learning areas, volunteer involvement, constantly changing promotional activities and a dynamic collection of print and online resources selected to suit the school community.

The Lillian Foote Library is a wonderful space used by many and this award is testament to all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes by staff and students and a great honour.

Vietnamese delegation visits Ivanhoe The School was very pleased to host a delegation from Vietnam from Thursday 28 April to Wednesday 4 May. Officials and staff visited from Ban Mai Private School, Hanoi, Vietnam.

Classroom tours and meetings were held across The Ridgeway Secondary Campus, Plenty Campus and Buckley House. The visit aimed to share best practice between the two Schools and was a great success.

Bequests...

On Friday 15 April Sandy and Ken Pemberton hosted the first of several lunches planned to create awareness of what Bequests can mean, not only to the School but also to the beneficiaries of such a gift. Ken is a member of the Class of 1957 and his wife Sandy is a former Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School student. Both have made a commitment to support scholarships at Ivanhoe Grammar School through their bequest. Their reasoning is simple: "Our proposed bequest is simply deferred school fees had we had children – it is just that we are funding children belonging to someone else!"

The lunch was attended by several members of the Fidelis Society and a number of interested past students. We also took the opportunity to celebrate Ken and Sandy’s 50th wedding anniversary which had brought them down from the Southern Highlands to be amongst friends for that special occasion.

THE RIDGEWAY The Club commenced 2016 with two new members, the Giaprakis and Dalgleish families, both from Plenty Campus.

We welcome them on board.

The year began in style with a cocktail party held in the Boardroom for approximately 30 guests. At the function Gerard Foley announced his project to the Club which is to garner the Club’s support over the next few years for the Year 9 Enterprise Centres both at The Ridgeway and Plenty Campus.

He also brought members up to date with School happenings and his plans for the future which were warmly received by all in attendance.

The Club has a full and interesting calendar this year and our thanks go to our President James Norman (‘86) and Vice President Grant Nichol, current parent at Plenty, for their strong leadership of the Club.

Members of the Swain family visited Plenty Campus during Term 1 to see the Chapel and newly opened The Round.

The Swain family have strong links to all Ivanhoe campuses as past students and staff. Patriarch Allan Swain (’41) has named eight seats in the Middle Years Lecture Theatre acknowledging each of his children and their mother. The family has now named one of the pews in the Plenty Chapel for the family members associated with Plenty Campus – Mrs Pauline Swain as staff together with alumni Emma (’03), Nate (’07) and Josh (’08), and husband Peter (’75) who is the OIGA President.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Centenary Slater/ Graham Memorial Scholarship

During 2015 Bruce Jeeves (’58) approached the Development Office offering his services in finding a way to honour the collective commitment to Ivanhoe by two of its past staff members whose enormous involvement in sport meant that many hours were spent on and around the South Ground.

The naming of the Slater/Graham Hill, overlooking the South Ground, took place in March and drew to a conclusion the first stage in the long term plan to create a Slater/ Graham Memorial Scholarship.

This perpetual scholarship will be fully funded through the generosity of many Old Ivanhoe Grammarians who admired them, together with members of the Graham and Slater families.

It will be awarded to a capable secondary student with a flair for sport whose family do not have the financial capacity to afford an Ivanhoe education.

Alan Graham (‘32) attended Ivanhoe as a student from 1923 until 1932 and as a staff member from 1946 until his death in 1979.

He was the undisputed coach of U14 Football and a thrice victorious premiership coach of Ivanhoe First XI. Alan also wrote, in collaboration with John Marshall, the School Song in 1948.

Robert S Slater was a staff member from 1948 until 1988 renowned for his coaching ability in all sports producing numerous premiership successes particularly in Football and Tennis. Many past students owe their sporting success both at the School and beyond to the encouragement and motivation given freely to them by Rob Slater.

The focus of Ivanhoe Giving 2016 for alumni this year is the Slater/Graham Memorial scholarship and all alumni taught and or coached by Rod Slater and Alan Graham are invited to participate.

STAFF FUNDED

Gerard Foley introduced the concept of a staff funded scholarship at the whole 2016 staff introduction day earlier this year. He invited staff to consider foregoing a coffee a week, and make a monthly commitment via payroll deduction to collectively fund the secondary Ivanhoe education of a deserving student from a financially challenged background.

Commitments during Term 1 were received from more than 10 per cent of staff from all three campuses – some staff via monthly salary deductions, others making a one off gift to the scholarship. It was pointed out to all staff that this would be a long term project.

The commitment to this vision by so many staff is endorsement that staff believe in the power of an Ivanhoe education.

CALVIN ANG Calvin Ang Library Collection steadily grows Calvin Ang was a student at Ivanhoe for 18 months during 1984 (Prep) and part of 1985 (Year 1).

One Wednesday afternoon during 1985 Calvin died as a result of a car accident.

Two of Calvin’s teachers, Mrs Wendy Fishley and Mrs Brenda Lyon joined the occasion, delighted to meet again with Calvin’s parents after more than 30 years.

A framed photo and biography will be placed above the collection in the Library for all who visit to read Calvin’s story.

Following his death, his parents established the Calvin Ang Library Collection which has become a substantial part of the Marjorie Gregory Library at Buckley House.

Recently the Ang family visited the School to present a further gift to perpetuate the collection which now contains more than 350 books.

OUR SCHOOL The year commenced with a number of community events designed to promote friendships and welcome new parents to the Ivanhoe Grammar School family.

THE RIDGEWAY CAMPUS YEAR 7 PARENTS WELCOME FUNCTION The Principal and the Head of Middle Years hosted a cocktail function for all Year 7 parents in The Ridge CafĂŠ on 11 February. Our new Deputy Principal, Brendan Kelly, was introduced and the Chair of Ivanhoe Parents and Friends, Belinda Hopper, gave an overview of our parent support groups and their activities.

A number of new parents volunteered on the night to take on the role of Year 7 class representatives to assist in organising social activities for parents and students.

FRIENDS OF BUCKLEY HOUSE DRINKS AT DUSK This popular annual event saw 130 Buckley House parents and staff enjoy drinks and canapes on the terrace of The Ridge CafĂŠ on 19 February. A highlight of the night was entertainment provided by a 3 piece band featuring one of our Year 9 parents.

THE RIDGEWAY CAMPUS YEAR 7 FAMILY PICNIC Another new event on the calendar, the Year 7 Family Picnic was organised by the Year 7 class representatives and held at Chelsworth Park in early March. It was a very relaxed afternoon, with families encouraged to bring their own picnic and games.

A coffee van run by a Plenty past student, Amanda Van Dender (Class of 2012), proved very popular and a great opportunity for Amanda to promote her new business to our community.

BIG IDEAS BREAKFAST: CREATING LEADERS WHO CREATE CHANGE Do you have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset? If the Prime Minister refused to meet you and a bullying politician told you to give up, would you see it as a failure or a challenge?

Inspiring speaker Holly Ransom demonstrated how a life-long passion for asking questions and challenging herself to find solutions has taken her on an extraordinary journey that has included meeting US President Barack Obama, addressing the United Nations and mentoring hundreds of young people.

Ms Ransom, who addressed about 200 Ivanhoe students, parents, alumni and staff at the Big Ideas Breakfast in April, spoke about the need for young people to take risks and learn from failure. Ms Ransom had a special message for young female students, urging them to put themselves forward for leadership, to take risks and ‘back themselves.' She “double dared” students to take a risk and do something they were afraid of.

A huge advocate of mentoring, Ms Ransom said she was given some key advice from a mentor early on: "how long does it take to learn the wisdom from someone’s whole life? One lunch time." Since then, she says, not a week goes past when she doesn’t approach someone for coffee or lunch. Ms Ransom encouraged students to use mentoring and contacts to build knowledge and relationships and gain a clearer idea of where they would like to go in life.

"The world is built on relationships."

Reminding students that they will have an average of 14 careers in their lifetime, Ms Ransom also urged them to become at least competent in the areas of maths and science, as these will play key roles in the fast changing economy.

FRIENDS OF PLENTY CAMPUS BANQUET AT DUSK On 26 February the Friends of Plenty Campus hosted a new event for their Campus which showcased the beautiful garden surrounds on a lovely summer’s evening.

Round SQUARE

TRIPS Over the Summer holiday break, a number of students, alumni and staff took the opportunity to participate in local and international trips to places as far flung as India, Cambodia, the United States of America, and Tasmania. These trips focussed on everything from service to sport, as well providing opportunities for sightseeing and adventure activities.

This year a group of 11 to 13 year-old students attended the Round Square Conference at Daly College in Indore, India. They departed on January 3 and returned on Sunday 17 January.

The inspirational theme of the conference was: 'Somewhere over the rainbow – Dreaming of a wonderful world' and ran from January 4 to 10.

Over 42 Round Square Schools from across the globe took part in the conference, with Khushi, a Year 8 student proudly flying the Ivanhoe flag at the opening ceremony and our former Principal and current Chairman of the Round Square, Mr Rod Fraser taking the stage to address the guests. It was a jam-packed conference with many exciting activities. Highlights included, arts and cultural activities where friendships were formed with students from other schools, baraza groups where discussions and ideas were exchanged, the Team Fun Day, guest speaker, Ribu Vorhas’s inspirational presentation on Environment Day and the multicultural evening. Students and staff then continued on to explore India.

The USA Basketball Tour, led by Ms Katrina Hibbert is a fun-filled sporting and sight-seeing extravaganza and this year was no exception.

From the December 8 – 24 students visited the states of Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and California. Not only did students get to hone their skills on the court by playing local high schools but they also got to watch NBA games.

Playing basketball in American high schools for packed-out gyms with cheerleaders was an experience the students will never forget.

Of course there was plenty of sightseeing and shopping to do as well with memorable visits to Graceland, the Hurricane Katrina Memorial, Bourbon Street, Louisiana State University, NASA in Houston, Universal Studios and Disneyland.

A group of Ivanhoe Grammar School parents and alumni from The Ridgeway and Plenty Campus flew to Cambodia in early January. They carried on the School’s commitment to education in Cambodia spending 14 days working with needy communities, offering educational support to teachers and students in Cambodia and Laos.

The 2015 White Water and Slalom School Kayaking Championships which ran from January 8 to 12 saw a large contingent of Ivanhoe paddlers compete at this stellar event on the Forth River in Tasmania.

There are many opportunities for Ivanhoe students to participate in out-of-classroom experiences, including local and international trips for service projects, Round Square conferences, sport, language and more. These trips allow our students to see and experience different cultures and make connections with students across the globe.

ROUND SQUARE CONFERENCE FOR STUDENTS AGED 12 TO 14 Life on the Edge Students gain invaluable experiences at Round Square conferences such as the development of social skills and confidence alongside the broadening of international understanding.

This year’s Round Square Conference for students aged 12 to 14 took place in Scotch College, Perth. Delegates from around the Asia Pacific Region were treated to five days of stimulating presentations, inspiring discourse and challenging physical activity. The hosts, Scotch College, provided a series of experiences that dared our students to push beyond comfort zones in an array of different areas of their lives. It was a privilege to witness Ivanhoe students rise to each occasion and represent our school with courage and aplomb.

Speakers addressed a range of urgent global issues, drawing delegates’ attention to ways in which they were able to engage and contribute; our students became increasingly aware that they have so much to offer in helping to solve problems that could, at first, seem daunting.

A significant highlight of the trip was the camaraderie built between students from different schools, states and countries. It was a very proud moment to see our own students form an immediate bond with a group of Chinese delegates from Beijing Concord College of Sino-Canada, and this generous and inclusive attitude pervaded the rest of the conference.

From the very start, it looked as if it would be a tight tussle as both Mentone and Ivanhoe vied for top spot on the ladder throughout the initial events. In the end, and despite a valiant effort, the School came second place in both the boys’ and girls’ competition. Congratulations to Mentone for winning both trophies.

Whilst there were many outstanding winners on the night, the biggest highlight was the performance of Year 7 student, Bethany Dalgleish who broke the AGSV record in three individual events! Well done Bethany.

IVANHOE Basketball Boys Firsts Basketball this year saw our team remain competitive within the AGSV finishing a strong 4th amongst some very good competition.

We started the first half of the season suffering some tough losses (1 win - 4 losses) to the eventual higher ranked teams of Marcellin, Mentone and Trinity Grammar. However, with a mid -season USA Basketball Tour over the summer, we were able to build on our teamwork and culture while playing against some very competitive American High School teams.

As a result, the second half of the season saw us notch up some very good wins to finish out the second half of the season undefeated (3-0).

Having only 3 senior students in the starting line-up did help provide some valuable playing opportunities for our younger players.

Hopefully this will stand us in good stead for next season.

For the sixth consecutive year our Firsts clinched a top-three spot on the premiership ladder, capping off the season with an inspirational win against Yarra Valley. To some extent this performance erased memories of an inexplicable and unacceptable loss to PEGS in a Round 8 semi-final. Brendan Wang and Darren Qiang led the charge by toppling AGSV doubles pair, Elton Zhang and Rayne Wang.

The Badminton Open Girls’ Teams had a terrific season, with the TRC Brown team only losing one game for the season.

Only Captain, Kevin Wu, and Year 12 colleagues, Finn Turpin and Frank He, will be missing from next season’s squad, and so the School is expected to remain a force in the immediate future.

This result, coupled with the performances of all our girls’ badminton teams, was reflective of the commitment of all the girls who continually turned up for both afterschool and morning sessions.

After a rebuilding year last season, we started the year with an experienced squad that was aiming high. And high we got! The highlight of the year was obviously our semi-final win against top place and flag favourites Yarra Valley. Unfortunately the boys couldn’t quite keep the momentum up the following week in the Grand Final and we went down to a well prepared outfit in Mentone.

This year the Girls Open Firsts Volleyball Team had a very enjoyable and exciting season, which has made this one of the most successful results for our Open Girls Volleyball Team to date. We placed 4th in the competition overall and our final results were four wins and four loses, which was an outstanding effort.

With seven of the 9 players returning in 2016/17, we certainly look forward to seeing the boys progress further and hopefully taking out that elusive AGSV Boys Volleyball title.

The team displayed a wide range of talent spread across both Senior and Middle Years students. This year especially, the girls AGSV/APS competition was of a very high standard, which pushed the girls to work even harder and meet the high standards of the other teams. We did this by our hard work at multiple training sessions throughout the week, supported by our dedicated coach, Tanya McInerney.

Ivanhoe’s First XI Cricket team experienced a successful 2015/16 season. It started with early wins against Marcellin, Yarra Valley and Camberwell. The win against Camberwell meaning that the team once again held on to the prestigious Allen Graham Trophy for another season.

The season produced some outstanding performances.

Led by our talented Captain Jacqueline Mitchelhill, they won five of their nine games and were very competitive throughout the season. This was largely due to Tysha Clark’s hitting and Taylor Marshall’s efforts behind the plate.

The middle of the season saw a close loss to Trinity, followed by a drubbing at the hands of the strong Mentone team. Wins against Assumption College and PEGS after the break put the Ivanhoe boys back in contention, but eventual premiers Peninsula proved far too strong in the final round. All things considered, it was a successful year for the squad, finishing the year with five wins and three losses and in 4th position at the conclusion of the season.

The year also revealed some individual highlights. Consistent performances with the ball from Daniel Stanford saw him rewarded with a spot in the AGSV First XI ; Jack Bradley won the batting average and Lachlan Murphy, after a late start, bowled with plenty of fire to win both the bowling average and the Colin Corstorphin Trophy for the MVP of the 2015/16 First XI Cricket season.

Georgia Harper, Cecilia Baldassarre, and Maggie Fitzpatrick all deserved their selection in the AGSV Representative Team, while Chloe Dellavedova, Brooklyn Hutton, Emma Sands and Suli Leota will form the backbone of the team for the next few years.

Boys’ Tennis Building off the momentum created from recent years, the boys tennis team had another tilt at the title. However, as has been the case for the last two years, we had to settle for the runners up award! The boys were valiant in defeat, matching Mentone 8 sets all but losing the Premiership by just four games. All the boys who played Firsts’ Tennis should be congratulated on a terrific season.

Another success at the 2016 Whitewater and Slalom School Championships in January started the Kayaking year very well.

By reaching the third and fourth places playoff, the Firsts Table Tennis team completed its most competitive season in recent years. This was a very pleasing result given the significant turnover of players in the squad. Importantly, the team has laid a strong foundation for stronger outcomes over the next few years.

With the exception of our Captain, Saskia Veldkamp, the Girls Firsts’ was made up of predominantly girls in Year 10 or lower. Whilst this proved a challenge, it was most heartening to see them win four matches in a very tough competition that boasts teams with girls with international junior rankings.

Ivanhoe dominated the School Awards at the national championships, taking out the National Schools Competition for the eighth year in a row and Best Boys' Team.

Record numbers of students attended the start of year beginners programs. It is pleasing to see so many new juniors continuing on with the sport, training and competing in the Yarra Series event. Well done to these students who have shown great resilience learning new skills and being prepared to challenge themselves on white water.

Congratulations to Tristan Carter and Lachlan Bassett who have been selected to the Australian Junior Team and we wish them well as they head to Krakow, Poland in mid-July.

Through excellent team spirit, the Ivanhoe squad was able to challenge every school aside from the dominant Camberwell GS team, resulting in some exciting and memorable contests.

The welcome addition of two talented young players, Elvis Jiang and Oscar Li, really boosted the team. Oscar was rewarded with AGSV representation for his efforts.

One could imagine that, in the months following our Centenary year, the Association would be meandering along, still basking in the success of 2015 knowing how well we had reached, connected and supported current and past students in celebrating 100 years as a school community.

However, a glance through these pages of Ivanhoe News will no doubt remind all our members and stakeholders that the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association is just as busy and vibrant in 2016 as it was last year – though perhaps without the fanfare.

Firstly, a very warm welcome to our newest members of the Association from the Class of 2015 – I trust that your Association will be able to provide support as your career progresses, along whatever pathway you choose. Of course, our alumni are welcome to join the Association at any time, so if you haven’t done so yet, please feel free to contact Geoff Brown, OIGA Executive Officer, or Elise Dunstan, our Alumni Coordinator, at any time.

In February we launched the OIGA website and a further set of inspirational stories about Ivanhoe alumni. Whilst Lauren Chan (’07) didn’t feature that night, it is hard to imagine a more influential and inspirational person in the Ivanhoe family than Lauren. For over 5 years, Lauren has spearheaded the Old Ivanhoe Netball Club as both President and Coach, leading to several Premierships and firmly establishing the Club as a pivotal way for young Alumni to stay connected with their friends. Now, with Troy Rosenlis (’04), Lauren is putting her energies into the formation of the Old Ivanhoe Water Polo Club, with a male and a female team entered in competition in 2016.

A number of OIGA Grants have been awarded in 2016 to support Alumni activities. In addition to supporting our sporting clubs, Council has approved grants for a number of new ventures, including:

• The donation of stand-up desks for students at both Ridgeway and Plenty through Upstanding Kids charity set-up by Peter Parker (‘89).

• Support for a kids holiday program which is run at the School by a start-up business called All Star Kids founded

by Tim Walsh (‘03).

• Donations to various causes and charities which Alumni are actively connected to including: Daniel Mazzei (’93) (Bravehearts) and Meghna Kadalbajoo (’13) (Steer North).

These Grants provide examples of how the OIGA support Alumni, whilst helping the School and the broader community.

Elise Dunstan and Geoff Brown are always on the lookout for new ways for the Association can enhance relationships between alumni and also to support current students.

Please contact Elise or Geoff if you have new ideas, but in the meantime, take advantage of the reunion program as well as special events, activities and programs that provide the opportunity to re-connect.

George Elovaris and Christian Cortese (both ‘15) started Cortelo Tutoring. Both alumni attended the School from ELC, and as respected members of their peer year they have created a business which not only assists students from various schools with their studies and skill development, but it also provides an avenue to ‘create jobs for our friends’.

A standing ovation was given for George Dimarelos (’04) who sold-out most of his shows at the recent International Melbourne Comedy Festival. According to one fan, “George sweeps you away with his infectious and obstreperous stage presence; he takes you on a journey of his Greek-Australian upbringing that everyone can relate to in this hilarious show”.

Steven Nicholson (‘99) Steven Nicholson (’99) and his company AIRBAG scored 9 Ad- Fest Awards for the Melbourne International Film Festival ‘The Emotional Trailer’ campaign.

Old Ivanhoe Football Club Paul Colbert (’05), who was an outstanding school boy footballer, has recently returned to join the OIGFC from Seymour which the Club is thrilled about. Michael ‘Mal’ Mitris (’10) has also been celebrated for taking an outstanding mark to kick the winning goal against Kew Amateurs – this incident scored the highest number of online traffic in the VAFA to date. The old boys won by one point after a goal was kicked after the siren!

Daniel Bryar (‘94) Daniel Bryar (’94) will contest Division 7 for the Greens in the upcoming election. The Bachelor of Technology and Masters of International Studies holder, said if successful he would be advocating “for entrepreneurship and enhancing the Sunshine Coast’s digital economy.”

Tim Walsh (‘03) Tim Walsh (’03) successfully ran the first All Star Kids Holiday Program oncampus at The Ridgeway during Term 1 Holidays, involving lots of Buckley House students and children of staff and alumni. Tim’s business was supported by an OIGA Grant which funded most of the equipment and it was great to see him employ qualified alumni trainers including Brooke Reynolds (’12) and Mike Skoullos (’09). Old Ivanhoe Cricket Club A once-in-a-lifetime Boxing Day Test experience was thoroughly enjoyed by the young boys and girls enrolled in the Milo ‘in2cricket’ program affiliated with Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Cricket Club. Getting down on the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground is something a lot of fans might never manage, so the OIGCC youngsters jumped at the opportunity to have a crack at demonstrating some of the skills they had been practising each week during their Milo Cricket sessions.

The OIGA website was officially launched on Wednesday 17 February in the Watts Foyer of Buckley Hall. Alumni, OIGA Councillors and Board members came together to see and hear Andrew Sheehan (’09) showcase the site for the first time and celebrate the moment we went live!

Amongst the attendees were alumni business owners listed in the Business Profiles section of the site – we strongly encourage alumni in business to connect and collaborate where possible to further support each other’s work.

Another feature of the evening was the launch of our most recent batch of Exceptional/Inspirational Alumni Stories, and we were very pleased to have Mark Buzza (’90) and Tick Jiang (’05) attend to help us celebrate this project which endorses the diverse pathways and achievements of our Alumni.

The website launch, like most of our OIGA events had multiple threads of Alumni connections – Mark Longmuir (’84) and his Spitting Image Catering team catered, Temple Brewing Co Bicycle Beer and Anytime IPA were served c/o Nick Pang ’(94), and Meagan Filby (‘98) (nee Joannidis) captured the night professionally representing Alpha Omega Photography.

PLENTY CAMPUS 10 YEAR REUNION The Class of 2005 reunion was suitably hosted by past Plenty student and Event Consultant Cathy Hosking (’02), and in keeping with the Plenty theme, held at Moon Dog Brewery owned by Plenty alumni Josh Uljans (’02) and Karl Van Burren (‘02) - on Friday 27 November, 2015.

CLASS OF 1966 50 YEAR REUNION

In March we celebrated the 50 Year Anniversary for members of the Class of 1966 hosted by Life Governor and Board member John McKenzie AM, School Captain that year. Although a small group, guests travelled from near and far to be present.

Peter Hood from Perth, Alan McGarrigle, Sunshine Coast, Graham and Sheilah Whyte, Sydney and Greg Barnett from Ballarat made a supreme effort to be there. After a tour of the School and a delightful lunch in the Boardroom, guests moved to the South Ground for the naming of the Slater Graham Memorial Hill and finished their day with afternoon tea amongst many Ivanarians who had come for the aforementioned event.

GEELONG REUNION Thanks to Neville Crane (’62), who found the ideal venue at Baveras Brasserie on the foreshore at Geelong, a most enjoyable lunch was held for alumni domiciled in the area.

Ian Rule (’67), former Head of Plenty Campus, and wife Robyn joined us from Torquay as did Irwin Faris (’57).

Long distance traveller was Graeme Smith (’53) from Irrewarra who, as a friend of Dennis Foley in Colac, came to check out Principal Gerard Foley who in turn brought everyone up to date on School matters.

Stalwarts David North (’68), Peter Gates (‘69) and Paul Selleck (’75) never let us down when there is something on in Geelong. Steven Haines (’77) was the youngest present and School Captain of 1942, John Backhouse OAM took the mantle of our oldest at a mere 91 years of age! In short, a very pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by all.

LONDON DRINKS New Principal Gerard Foley hosted his first OIG Reunion in style in London at The May Fair Hotel Bar on Tuesday 19 January, 2016. Alumni attendees represented the following year levels: 2010, 2003, 2002, 2000, 1992, 1989, 1982, 1981 and it was great to see some partners attend too. The purpose of these OIG events are to reach, connect and support. It was great to see Alumni attend who had been living in London for only weeks, others for decades – this is therefore a good opportunity to expand social circles and professional networks for all who attend. Special thanks goes to Gerard for offering to host whilst away, and to Greg Diffen for taking a number of professional photos for the OIGA.

Although the beer flowed, nobody got out of hand to get the 'Best on Ground' award for the First XI. Gerard was in fine form and kept us all entertained and informed about activities at the School.
