From the Principal

D

uring 2016 the School has continued to be a learning environment that respects and honours the achievements of the past, but importantly continues to look to the future.

A Director of Student Futures has been appointed to support this initiative and to ensure that progressively, students are taking greater ownership of their learning and the future directions they wish to pursue.

Since its inception 101 years ago, Ivanhoe Grammar School has been committed to service, learning and leadership and, in the past 20 years, to developing students with a global outlook.

In Term 3, as part of the development of a new Strategic Plan 2018-2020, the Australian Council of Educational Research (ACER) undertook a full review of the School speaking to all key stakeholders – students, staff, parents, management and alumni. The review provided an excellent opportunity for the School to reflect on current practices and the feedback from ACER was most affirming. The reviewing panel also highlighted some areas for the senior management team and the School in general to consider to further improve student outcomes and overall efficiency. Work has already commenced on a number of the suggested areas and will form part of our next strategic plan.

This has led to the introduction of many local and international opportunities for students which will be expanded even further with the launch of a Global Citizenship Centre (GCC) in 2017.

The GCC will work across all three campuses embedding the principles of Round Square and ensuring all students at Ivanhoe Grammar School graduate with 21st century skills in intercultural understanding, creativity, innovation and enterprise.

As outlined previously, changes to the language offerings in 2017 further support our emphasis on Global Citizenship.

Following an extensive review, a new and personalised future-focused Senior Years Pastoral Model will also be introduced for the 2017 academic year. Each student in the Senior Years will be allocated a mentor and will meet regularly to receive personal, academic and futures mentoring.

Staff news Mr Daniel Brown Mr Daniel Brown has been appointed to the role of Deputy Principal/Head of Plenty Campus and will join us from the start of the new school year in 2017.

Daniel’s experience, leadership and commitment are well suited to the future growth and direction of Plenty Campus. He comes to Ivanhoe Grammar School with a wealth of knowledge and experience across the administrative, pastoral, supervisory and academic components of schools. He has broad curriculum and pedagogical experience, from within Australia and overseas, across several teaching areas and year levels.

We look forward to welcoming Daniel, his wife Kylie and their children to Ivanhoe in the New Year. 

Farewell David Waugh

Mr Justin Peat

David Waugh joined Ivanhoe in 1975.

There is insufficient space here to do more than trace the career at the School of ‘The Colonel’, a devoted school teacher whose influence ranged so widely over more than forty years.

Mr Justin Peat has recently been appointed to the cross campus role of Director of Student Futures and will join us at the start of the 2017 School year.

Justin brings to Ivanhoe vast experience in innovative, future-focused academic mentoring and tertiary futures programs. He has in-depth understanding of what students need to navigate their academic pathway through school in order to be prepared for a meaningful future matching their individual aspirations. Through his expertise and established relationships with leading institutions overseas and in Australia, Stanford, Yale, UC Berkeley, Oxford and Cambridge will become viable pathways for students.

We welcome Justin, his wife Fleur and their children to Ivanhoe Grammar School. 

Mr Tom Rickards Mr Tom Rickards will commence in 2017 as the new Head of Senior School at The Ridgeway Campus. Mr Rickards joins us from Carey Baptist Grammar School where he has been primarily responsible for the Pastoral Care of Senior Years students as Deputy Head of Senior School. Mr Rickards is recognised as a leading educator among Victorian independent schools and will bring to Ivanhoe a tremendous passion for the wellbeing of students. 

As a scientist David nourished and extended generations of young minds in this subject area. An accomplished teacher across all the scientific disciplines, David was especially renowned for his teaching of Biology, with senior students clamouring to choose this subject in Years 11 and 12 under his tutelage.

David’s impact on the Ivanhoe Cadet Unit has been profound and enduring.

He was instrumental in developing a Youth Leadership Program that has provided countless young men and women with the opportunity to challenge themselves.

Beyond Cadets, David served in the most senior positions in the School, as Thoresby Housemaster, Year 11 and Year 12 Level Master, Head of Senior School at The Ridgeway Campus and Assistant Headmaster.

We wish David all the best for a fulfilling and well-deserved retirement. 

Farewell Deb Sukarna After 20 years of outstanding service to the Ivanhoe Grammar School Community, Deb Sukarna, Deputy Principal/Head of Plenty Campus, announced her intention to leave Ivanhoe to start her own consultancy at the end of the 2016 academic year.

D

eb began her teaching career in 1978 and since her first day in the classroom has been known for her philosophy of putting children first. Her expertise in the area of primary literacy has been recognised all around the world, working in both the public and independent educational sectors in Australia, the United States, Cambodia and Indonesia where she was Principal of a bi-lingual Balinese Community School.

Deb has been an inspiration to those she has worked with – passionate, loyal, hard-working and innovative, first as the Head of Buckley House, Ivanhoe

Campus then as Deputy Principal overseeing all Primary Education at the School including Plenty Campus.

In 2012, Deb accepted the role of Deputy Principal/Head of Plenty Campus, where her energy, enthusiasm and professionalism have been reflected in both the physical improvements on the campus and the increased focus on academic excellence by both staff and students. Also in 2012, The Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL) announced Deb as the Headley Beare Educator of the Year. This was followed with further accolades in 2014 when she was awarded the prestigious Council of

This consistent support of students will enable greater connections with tertiary providers and provide a wide range of tertiary opportunities for our graduating students.

ver the next twelve months, Ivanhoe Grammar School is delighted to be progressively rolling out its new model of Personalised Mentoring for students in Years 7 to 12.

This new initiative which commenced on Monday 14 November at Plenty and The Ridgeway Campus will see secondary

Built on the premise that every student is unique, and therefore deserving of a personalised educational experience, Personalised Mentoring aims to help each student reach their potential – and do so alongside a skilled guide who knows them well.

The process of Personalised Mentoring has three key dimensions:

Moving beyond simply teaching about wellbeing, Personalised Mentoring will involve each student reflecting on their personal strengths and putting in place development goals. Taking on board a strengths-based approach 8 | Ivanhoe News Magazine

progress is a vital part of the mentoring process. Employing digital tools it is now possible for every student to have a digital dashboard on which regular reflection can take place. This part of the process will see every student have regular mentoring discussions about their academic progress, and to be able to set SMART goals in each of their subjects. The rich learning conversations that will come out of this process will be of value to each student, assisting greatly in personal motivation and achievement.

Through this new structure, each student will develop a personalised plan for their future that is tailored to their individual needs and aspirations.

Through the use of evidence-based academic and tertiary futures

To enable this highly personalised approach, changes have been made to our pastoral structures that will see a significant increase in the time available for the mentoring of students.

In addition, a number of new positions have been created to manage the process. The Personalised Mentoring initiative will vary slightly between Middle Years and Senior Years, however the essential elements of the program will remain the same. Students will receive their Personal Plan template electronically and complete their own responses before sending it through to the Deputy/Head of House (Senior Years) or Mentor Teacher (Middle Years). Following this students will then have their Futures Meetings with their personal mentor, discuss their responses, make adjustments and set some goals for the upcoming weeks, months and years. This process will be repeated four times a year to ensure that all students are supported as they make progress towards their goals.

As we prepare our students for a global future where continuous change is the norm, we aim to create young men and women who are confident, resilient and equipped with the skills to be the leaders of tomorrow. We believe that in putting in place a structure that aims to develop the potential of every single student, Ivanhoe Grammar School is making a strong statement about what really matters in education today.

Q&A with Steve Brophy We sat down with the Director of ICT and e-Learning, Steve Brophy to discuss the future direction of technology at the School.

What does Ivanhoe Grammar School currently do in the digital space?

Ivanhoe’s digital footprint is significant.

From hosting the innovative TeachTechPlay conference to developing modern, digitally connected classrooms, our School prides itself on being at the cutting edge of technology. Student learning is amplified through access to personal mobile learning devices and online learning resources that provide 24/7 access to learning. Fabrication tools such as 3D printers are embedded in our curriculum as a digital resource to encourage student creativity.

Students are connected to new opportunities such as virtual debates and global conversations through video conferencing. Our students are empowered to be digital role models through our Digital Leader Program and Digital Technologies curriculum.

What is the importance of digital literacy in education?

In a report from the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) on the new basics that young people need for their future, Digital Literacy was listed as the most in demand by employers. In the past three years, there has been a 212 per cent increase in the demand for young people to be able to read, write and contribute in a digitally-meaningful way. To think that the World Wide Web is only in its late twenties and that YouTube is only eleven years old gives us a sense of the rapid rate of growth we have seen in the first few years of this century. Our goal is to develop learners who are highly adaptable and can thrive in this era of rapid change.

What are the differences between what we do at Ivanhoe and other schools?

as a school. Through in-house software development we customise and integrate digital solutions to work for all community members. In the classroom our focus is putting the technology in the hands of the students and challenging them to be creators of content instead of consumers of content. We openly share our teaching and learning practices with the world through our school blog, Ivanhoe Learn ivanhoelearn.com and the celebration of innovation drives us to keep improving what we do as a School.

What does the future landscape of digital technology look like for Ivanhoe and the education sector?

It is equals parts exhilarating and intimidating. Web 3.0, the Internet of Things, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality - the list goes on and on. For Ivanhoe and the education sector, the biggest challenge is how we traverse this, so we need to be discerning with where we focus our energy but also open to new possibilities. We are developing a strong culture of innovation where digital technologies are used to solve problems. If we keep things simple, i.e. our core business is and always will be improving learning, then we have a simple metric to validate the effectiveness of new technologies.

Does it improve IT learning? If it does, then great. If not, then we move past it.

What are your memorable moments at Ivanhoe?

My memorable moments always involve students. Watching students challenge themselves to take risks with their learning and work through the trips, falls, mistakes or failures to develop solutions is always a highlight. Watching students empowered to teach other students and share their knowledge and skills is always a highlight of my day. One particular example of this that stands out is when the Buckley House Digital Leaders and I ran a session for teachers at the TeachTechPlay conference. The teachers were blown away by the capacity and poise of our students and the memory still makes me smile.

What do you like about working in this space?

I love how dynamic it is. As a learner, I’m trying to rival my five year old daughter’s curiosity and the digital landscape provides so many avenues to learn, connect, share and grow. I’m blown away daily by the level of innovation and ingenuity of our staff and students. 

Performing Arts Piano and Soloists Competition The finale performance of the Piano and Soloists competition was held on Wednesday 17 August.

The evening showcased the remarkable talents of music students from across the School.

This year there were 71 competitors from across the School and at the final performance night,13 of those competed in the Performer Section.

We would like to congratulate everyone who entered and performed in this year’s competition and hope that the experience of their performance, together with the presentation of Certificates and Awards will encourage them to stretch their talents and capabilities even further. 

More Than Words Held on Wednesday 14 September, this stunning concert showcased the talents of the School’s singers. On display were soloists, A Cappella ensemble and Choirs from the Plenty Campus and both Primary and Secondary and soloists from Buckley House and The Ridgeway Campus and the Ridgeway and Locksley Chorale. Congratulations to everyone who performed. 

The annual celebration of the Performing Arts was held on Thursday 1 September at Plenty Campus. Highlights from the concert included excellent performances from the Junior and Senior Primary Choirs and the Primary Chamber Strings, an A Cappella and percussion version of Adele’s Send my Love and the Jazz Band, conducted by Mr Chappel, accompanied the Male Choir as well as the Secondary Choir. The overall standard was extremely high. There was a real sense of excitement and all students performed with confidence. The Finale, God Only Knows, was performed by the combined Choir and Orchestra, providing a fitting end to an outstanding evening of Music and Dance. 

Peter Pan Jr. Musical Students from across Buckley House, from Prep to Year 6 were involved in the spectacular production of Peter Pan Jr. Opening night was a feast of colour and movement with energetic performances by students and a wonderful set that brought to life the much-loved story of Peter Pan. The cast were outstanding in the way they applied themselves and in providing two nights of wonderful entertainment. Buckley House staff went above and beyond to assist with costumes, makeup, props, coaching and much more.

The support received from the parent community was also appreciated. They helped with costumes, bringing children to rehearsals, giving up Saturday afternoons, assisting with the learning of lines and many other important things which helped to prepare students for the show. ď Ż

Dance and Drama Plenty Campus The year commenced with the hugely successful Stephen Sondheim classic Into The Woods. Performed at the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre.

The production saw over 100 secondary students involved.

There have been several enhancements to the Drama Studio, a new bio box and sound system have been installed, and there are plans to fully upgrade the lighting system. This space will soon have the technical capacity to match the creativity of our students and in 2017 Theatre Studies will be available as a Unit 1 and 2 curriculum offering.

Our Secondary Dance Group has also been a welcome addition to the performing arts landscape. This group of talented dancers performed beautifully at our annual Performing Arts Concert, and are preparing for another performance at the Summer Recital.

The Ridgeway Campus The Arts have exploded over the past few years at both a curriculum and co-curricular level. The year kicked off well with two students selected to present their VCE work in Top Acts, a first for Ivanhoe. Since then, we’ve had a school musical (Songs for a New World), a VCE play (Metamorphoses), a school play (A Servant to Two Masters), a Year 9 Out-of-Classroom project, a visit from the Bell Shakespeare Players, a program of VCE monologues and a performance from a brilliant Commedia Dell’Arte troupe targeted at the Middle Years. On top of that, there have been numerous theatre visits to Melbourne Theatre Company, La Mama and Theatreworks to give our students the opportunity of seeing actors working in the broadest range of theatre styles.

Where to next? Our co-curricular program has made clear that there is a growing interest in the areas of Dance and Theatre Technology amongst our student body.

The impact of dance imbues young bodies and minds with a skill set that develops physical co-ordination, confidence, leadership opportunities (for Dance Captains in the musical) and most importantly, the ability to think quickly, laterally and with anticipation. Dance-extension classes have also been scheduled after school in jazz and tap.

Plenty Campus Drama

Not everyone is suited to performance, however the desire to contribute to a creative process strikes broad interest from our students who show a fascination with the ‘nuts and bolts’ side of theatre-making. These components include lighting, sound design, AV, set design and construction, costuming and marketing; all these components play a part in the final performance product and offer avenues of involvement for students.

So watch this space. It is a great chapter in the life of all-things-creative at Ivanhoe.

With all of these opportunities, we are realising what we set out to achieve as a premier training ground for the young and creative minds in our charge, in and around theatre making. The way ahead is abundant with promise.

ommunity lies at the heart of Ivanhoe Grammar School with current students, teachers, parents and alumni all making a positive contribution to the School community.

Students are involved with many charities and programs at a local and global level with the key objective of giving back to the community. Visual Arts Plenty Secondary Visual Arts Exhibition The 20th Annual Plenty Visual Arts Exhibition celebrated the creative talents of students from all secondary levels at Plenty Campus. Works on display were from subject disciplines of Art, Product Design and Technology, Media and Visual Communication Design. The exhibition was officially opened by artist and art curator Sandy Caldow. This year, Connor Dunn (Year 12 Studio Art) was awarded First Prize; the Randal Marsh Art and Design Award for his series of outstanding drawings that explored the human attraction to the macabre.

Runner Up was awarded to Rose Kenney (Year 12 Studio Art) for her installation that explored the euphoric state achieved through everyday experiences. The Acquisition Award went to Jacob Minarelli (Year 12 Studio Art) for his painting that explores man’s relationship with nature. The Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association Encouragement Award was presented to Ella Primerano in Year 10. Well done to all! 

Congratulations to Art Teacher Mrs Nancy Ventrice on another tremendous effort in teaching the children throughout the year and supporting them in producing art of a very high standard. 

The Ridgeway Campus Year 12 Art and Design Graduate Show The creative talents of students working in Studio Arts, IB Visual Arts, Product Design Technology and Visual Communication Design were on display for this annual art exhibition. The night was officially opened by Randal Marsh (’77) an award winning architect from Wood Marsh Architecture. Congratulations to the following award recipients: Randal Marsh 1st place Award winner, Sophie Day; Randal Marsh 2nd place Award winner, Harrison Minuzzo and Johanna Gibbs; Randal Marsh Acquisition Award winner Tom Crawford, and Centenary Product Design and Technology Award winner, Cameron Elliot. These awards are the most prestigious artistic prizes awarded as a way of encouraging and developing student talent in Art and Design at Ivanhoe. 

This was a stunning exhibition celebrating the Visual Arts at Ivanhoe.

Ms Alexia Petsinis (’11) who works in the fashion industry as a freelance creative illustrator, writer, blogger and designer opened the night. This year Caitlin Wagg (Year 10) was the proud recipient of the OIGA Encouragement Award in the Visual Arts. Excellence and special recognition awards were also presented to students from each of the Years 7 to 10 Visual Arts subjects. 

Buckley House Visual Arts Exhibition A Feast for Your Eyes was the theme of the 2016 Buckley House Art Exhibition.

All students contributed to a mouth-watering display of artwork.

Ceramic pizzas, sponge birthday cakes and flavoured ice cream constructions, all helped transform the Innovation Centre. Highlights of the Exhibition included a centrepiece display of fake party food and large market umbrellas with hanging wooden spoon characters, apples and utensils which were best viewed lying down. The collaborative artworks from each year level were auctioned off with all funds going towards the School’s service programs in Cambodia. 

Year 9 journeys ‘A World of Opportunities’ Out-of-Classroom experiences provided Year 9 students with independent learning and cultural exchange.

During the Term 3 break a number of Year 9 trips took place to China, India, Thailand and Bali. The Year 9 Out-ofClassroom Program is aligned with the School’s commitment to the Middle School philosophy of engaging Year 9 students and providing them with an opportunity for independent learning and cultural exchange.

The trip to China ran from Wednesday 7 September until Sunday 18 September with 16 students attending. Students were able to fully immerse themselves in the local culture by attending classes with local Chinese Ivanhoe Grammar School students in Shanghai. There 18 | Ivanhoe News Magazine

were many sightseeing opportunities, including trips to the ancient Terra Cotta Warriors, a bicycle tour of the ancient wall of X’ian, an awe-inspiring trip to the Great Wall of China, a day tour of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

The India trip ran from Wednesday 7 September to Monday 19 September.

Student stayed at the historic Daley College in Indore which was established in 1870. Lessons in pottery and painting alongside yoga sessions were part of life at Daly College. Students also took part in the Daly College cultural course, a tour of the Golden Triangle and visits to world-famous sights such as the Taj Mahal, Nahargarh Fort and the Amber Fort. From Thursday 8 September to Saturday 17 September 14, students and two teachers travelled to Thailand.

Students got the chance to experience Thai culture through a myriad of activities such as cooking Thai cuisine, adventurous activities in Northern Thailand, community service within local schools and learning all about the Asian elephant. School visits were a

highlight where Ivanhoe students made friendships with local children.

A stimulating program was enjoyed by students on the Bali trip. They learnt about the Balinese way of life and gained an appreciation and understanding of the spirituality and gratitude in Balinese culture. The group was hosted at the totally sustainable Green Camp in Bali where they had to hand over their mobile phones enabling students to fully participate and stay engaged. The Bali trip gave plenty of opportunity for sightseeing at temples, volcanoes and an extensive field trip to Kenari Eco Institutes.

All of these trips contain challenging activities, adventures and service opportunities that promote leadership skills, global friendships and cultural exchange. All the Ivanhoe students represented the School admirably and will take away from their experiences newly formed friendships and life-long memories. 

Gaelic Football trip The international Gaelic Football trip ran for 20 days. Over twenty students from Years 9, 10 and 11 played football and visited the sights in Ireland. They left on Friday 9 September and returned on Thursday 29 September. Students were billeted with families from host schools - a wonderful way to learn all about the local culture. During this jam-packed trip there was plenty of sightseeing opportunities but the highlight for the boys was the numerous opportunities they were given to play against local teams and all the AFL clinics they attended. 

The Journey That Makes Us The 2016 Round Square Conference celebrated 50 years of the Round Square movement, with 80 schools from around the world gathering at two locations – Louisenlund in Germany and Aiglon in Switzerland to explore the conference theme: The Journey That Makes Us. Ivanhoe was represented by nine students and supporting staff.

The pre-conference tour was hosted by Rockport School in Belfast in Northern Ireland. Tour highlights included a visit to Stormont, Northern Ireland’s Parliament, City Hall, Crumlin Road Gaol and the powerfully evocative murals depicting the troubles that scar the city.

Guest speakers challenged students to think about their journey, resilience and passion for life. Among the speakers, delegates heard from polar explorer Ben Saunders, Professor Dr Manfred Spitzer, a neurologist who produced data to argue that multitasking is not an effective learning tool, and Souad Mekhennet, a German journalist who worked for the Washington Post and New York Times.

Round Square President, His Majesty King Constantine was in attendance and Ivanhoe student Alice Wilson was fortunate to meet the former King of Greece when she represented the School at a special lunch for delegates.

2016 Girls’ Athletics Premiership team

Athletics Premiership As sunset fell on Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park, new AGSV Athletics champions emerged.

In a dominating performance, the Girls’ Athletics team won the AGSV Athletics Championships by a remarkable 55 points in front of their nearest rivals, with a total of 318 points. This was truly a whole School effort as girls from all year levels contributed to the win.

Three individual performances of note were Charly Rouch (Year 9), Alessia Wynne (Year 7) and Chloe Jacobi (Year 7). Charly and Alessia were in five events and won each of their events.

Alessia set two new AGSV records in the process. Chloe won four of her five events and it took an AGSV record breaking performance to beat her (Chloe’s time, 0.06secs slower than her opponent was also quicker than the previous AGSV record). Tahnysha Salanoa was another stand-out, breaking the record in Shot Put.

The boys performed well and finished in 6th place. The total score of 376.5 was only 2.5 points behind fifth and a 30 point improvement on last year. The highlight was the performance of our U13 Boys’ athletes, particularly Zak Marin, who won the 100m, 200m and anchored the 4 x 100m Relay team.

Congratulations to Mr Branigan, Mr Dalton, Ms van Beek, Ms Parodi and Mr Verrocchi for their untiring efforts in preparing the team, alongside all the external coaches who provided expertise in the various disciplines.

Well done to all students who competed so valiantly for the School. 

Three Consecutive Premierships Netball continued to grow in 2016 from 20 to 22 teams and with that came wonderful success across all age groups. Many teams went the whole season with only one or two losses. Buckley House also managed to get to the finals. Whilst it is not all about winning it is about the experience and this year was no exception. For the third year in a row the Firsts Netball girls won the AGSV/APS Premiership. The last game against Mentone sealed the season and Ivanhoe finished undefeated.

The Premiership team was: Captain Olivia Gigli, Vice- Captain Georgia Harper, Isabella Hines, Tahnysha Siania Salanoa, Emily Anderson, Lauren Pentony, Ella Shannon and Suli Leta. Well done all. 

Congratulations to the whole Aerobics team on one of the most successful years to date. Their dedication and effort resulted in 12 gold medals! 

Once again the First XVIII Football team had a very successful season, ending the school’s 50 plus year Premiership drought. Despite many previous wins the Ivanhoe boys could not exert the scoreboard pressure that was needed to break their very accomplished opponents during the SemiFinal. The Ivanhoe boys put in effort that was first class and indicative of the excellent way they went about this footy season. 

The 2016 Soccer season was most definitely filled with many highs and lows but this roller coaster provided the Soccer girls another opportunity to grow and develop as individuals and also as a team. Throughout the entire season we worked hard and this definitely paid off as we finished the season with some wins. 

Girls’ Basketball Girls’ Firsts Basketball had a very successful start to the season on the back of the girls’ participation on the USA Basketball Tour in December for the first time.

Coming out with a strong start our team managed to win four from four games.

Unfortunately after this the team experienced a series of losses and, as a result, placed 5th overall. It is reassuring to know that whilst the team looses six senior players, there is still depth in the remaining members. 

2016 was an incredible season for the Boys’ Firsts Hockey. The boys achieved a third place overall and a win against long rivalled Camberwell (4,2). The success of this team was thanks to the amazingly talented players. 

Open XV Rugby The 2016 season of the Open XV Rugby team provided its fair share of highs and lows.

With dwindling numbers throughout the season against our opponents with a sizeable substitution roster, the Open XV did themselves proud, putting their bodies on the line in training and on game day. The 2016 team should be proud of their efforts and congratulated for their wins throughout the season. 

The continued success can be attributed to the team’s growing camaraderie and cohesion. It was fantastic to see the girls working hard to improve their individual skills and work as a team. 

The 2016 Water Polo season was very successful for all of the girls teams. The girls proudly won the majority of their games. Their wins can be attributed to the timeless amounts of hard work, effort and determination each girl consistently provided each week. 

Girls’ Football is an exciting new initiative taking place at the school. The first team was introduced in 2015, however, this year the team saw numbers increase to unbelievable levels, with participation being our main focus this year. With the assistance of some experienced players the senior team was able to come away with 2 from 2 wins in our individual games and coming fifth overall in our round robin games. The future of footy is bright at Ivanhoe. 

Each week the plethora of talent in the Ivanhoe Cross Country team produced plenty of top 20 results (special mention to Justin Cemeton who was consistently in the top 3 Juniors), but the main emphasis was always on having a great time competing. 

Snowsports In no time at all, mid-August brought the Cross Country race weekend and later on, the Alpine Race Week with many Junior School students trying racing for the first time and several experienced students producing excellent results. We had great success notably in the VIC Interschools - the single biggest ski race event. 

Kayaking In August, Ivanhoe kayakers competed at the 2016 Victorian All Schools Whitewater Championships.

Congratulations to the 50 strong Kayak team for their fine efforts, winning the Overall Champion Whitewater School trophy again. The School also won the Overall Boys’ Team Trophy but missed out on the Girls’ Trophy. The team is currently preparing for the Australian Championships to be held in NSW in January 2017. 

Celebrating family The Ivanhoe Grammar School family of current and past students, parents and staff came together through a number of activities and events in 2016.

Careers Expo Wednesday 1 June The School’s Careers Expo was well attended and appreciated by senior students and parents from The Ridgeway and Plenty Campus.

Students were able to choose from 21 different career fields, with an Old Ivanhoe Grammarian and a tertiary institution speaker presenting together on each field. In addition, we had information booths from 14 Universities and TAFEs, whose representatives discussed general course information with students.

Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, with many people commenting on the excellent advice and transition experience provided by our alumni speakers. 

Over 100 current and past parents from all campuses enjoyed a fabulous afternoon tea supplied by pastry chef, Jessica Hillbrick, who has trained at Le Cordon Bleu in London.

Congratulations to the organisers for a great new community event. 

Farm Vigano was the venue for a very successful Spring Lunch hosted by the Friends of Plenty Campus. Parents, past parents and staff were entertained by the Primary senior choir and VCE music class and A Cappella group. There were some fabulous raffle prizes on offer, resulting in the Friends of Plenty Campus making a significant donation to the Campus. 

Men’s Health Forum Thursday 10 November The School and the OIGA were pleased to host a Men’s Health Forum and Movember fundraiser, featuring guest speakers Craig Harper and Mark Buzza. Craig challenged the audience to take their health more seriously and to train the brain to create habitual lifestyle changes which can reduce the aging process and mitigate serious health concerns.

Mark (’90) highlighted the importance of early detection of prostate and testicular cancers and discussed the Movember Foundation’s programs which seek to engage youth in talking about depression, stress and anxiety.

Belinda Hopper has stepped down from her role as Chair of IP&F after three years of dedicated leadership. She has been associated with the School since 2002 when her eldest son, Jack, commenced in Buckley House. Her second son, Alex, completed Year 12 this year. Belinda has been a regular volunteer for many activities at the School including assisting in the Library, acting as a Year Level representative and as Convenor of the Friends of Ridgeway Music for several years. We thank Belinda for her contribution.

At the Teams of the Centenary Dinner in October 2015, the School created two new Sporting Awards to honour the lives of two exceptional Ivanhoe Grammarian sportsmen.

Belinda’s successor, Jodie Quick, joined our community when her son, Blake, commenced in the Early Learning Centre in 2007. Jodie’s husband, Matthew, was a member of the Class of 1990. Jodie was a member of the Friends of Buckley House for many years and, through her company Meridian Travel, has been a generous donor to major School events and was a Centenary Sponsor in 2015. Jodie is currently a Year Level representative and looks forward to the challenges of her new role as Chair of Ivanhoe Parents and Friends. 

Acknowledging our parent volunteers Under the umbrella of Ivanhoe Parents and Friends, we have 14 Parent Support Groups across our three Campuses. The School deeply appreciates the enthusiasm, time and effort of the many parents who help to enrich the lives of our students. Our groups support Music and Drama activities, sporting activities such as Kayaking, Snow Sports, Cricket, Rugby and Equestrian, friend and fundraising activities through the Friends of Buckley House, Friends of Plenty Campus, Friends of Plenty Primary, The Ladies’ Association, Greek Parents’ Association and Ivanhoe Scouts. The Principal hosted a Volunteers Thank You Function on Tuesday 8 November to acknowledge the service and support of these Groups during 2016.

A ‘Best Sport Captain’ Award was named after Ben Cookson, to be presented annually to the best open captain in either boys or girls sport.

Ben was a member of the Class of 2001 and had an illustrious cricket career at Ivanhoe, captaining both the School and AGSV teams in 2001, playing a vital role in two premierships and scoring three centuries. Ben contracted cancer in 2014 and passed away in June 2015 at just 31 years of age.

On Thursday 18 August this year, the Principal hosted a function for the open Netball team and their parents to celebrate winning the AGSV/APS Premiership for the third season in succession. Ben’s parents, Shane and Joanne, presented the Ben Cookson Award to team captain, Olivia Gigli.

An Award for the Best Player in the First XVIII was named in honour of David O’Halloran (’73). David was a valued member of the First XVIII, leading the team in his final year at Ivanhoe. On leaving School, he was recruited to the Hawthorn Football Club and played his first senior game in 1976. In a career spanning nine years, he played 160 senior games and represented Victoria three times. He played in four Grand Finals culminating in Premiership wins in 1976 and 1983. David was elected into the School’s Hall of Fame in 2001.

He passed away suddenly in 2013.

s the Association’s new OIGA President and a proud Old Ivanhoe Grammarian, I am excited to be leading this unique network and to uphold our mission to reach, connect and support current and past students. A little bit about me: I graduated in 1989 from The Ridgeway Campus and was a Prefect in my final year. As a student, I was highly involved in the Cadet program and most enjoyed athletics, cross country and cricket. I’m currently working for Jet Star and am a proud father of two daughters who currently attend Plenty Campus. I look forward to working alongside the OIGA Councillors, and would especially like to thank Vice-President Peter Swain (’75) for his outstanding commitment, support and leadership, and indeed for mentoring me in this role.

Now for a recap of 2016 – we began the year launching our first OIG website and ended the year with an outstanding performing and visual arts show. The Men’s Health Forum was also supported by alumni which contributed to the Movember campaign and it has been great to see the reunion program continuing to bring alumni together.

The role alumni play in the lives of our students cannot be underestimated, and we really appreciate your participation in programs and activities including: Year 12 Preparation Day, The Careers Expo, the four OIGA House Lunches at The Ridgeway Campus and multiple alumni sessions with a transition and wellbeing focus held at Plenty Campus. The year also saw the emergence of coffee catch-ups on campus hosted by Elise Dunstan (’01) and Alex Bacskos (’13) with the objective to bring alumni who are studying and working at universities together. Farewell Peter Swain (’75) In June, Peter stepped down from his role as President of the OIGA after seven years of outstanding service to the OIGA. His tenure saw the implementation of the strategic plan to increase the awareness of alumni to the Association through social media, reunion activities and networking events. A hands-on President in every respect he steered the Association through the busy years prior to the School’s Centenary which culminated in a great year of celebration in 2015. OIGA News Old Ivanhoe Revue and Alumni Art Exhibition Supported by the OIGA, the inaugural Old Ivanhoe Revue enjoyed great success with three out of four sell-out shows. The Revue (a series of quirky, comedic sketches with an Ivanhoe flavour) ran over four nights from Monday 31 October until Friday 4 November in Schuster Theatre of ArtsEdge at Locksley. Performed by four highly talented thespians: Claude Jabbour (’04), George Dimarelos (’04), Tash Findlay (’15) and Ruby Maishman (’15), the entire production including lighting and sound, filming, music, backstage, make-up and front-of-house drew on a much larger pool of alumni and special thanks go to: David Pratico (’04), Dan Matheson (’04), Raushaan Seychell (’15), Irene Papagrigoriou (’09), Liam Mantesso (’14), Fiona Ye (’15), Bill Taleski (’07) and Mat Foudoulis (’07).

The Art Exhibition, held next to the theatre, displayed nine alumni artist’s work. It was wonderful to see so many alumni attend each night, and to see many marvel at the renovated Arts hub. It was a joy for so many alumni to be a part of this successful Creative and Performing Arts Program and we look forward to the next one.

Reunions Class of 1976 40 Year Reunion With some great help from Phil Skeggs, 27 members of the Class of 1976 gathered in the Watts Foyer to talk over old times and renew friendships from long ago. A great effort from Tony Watts to travel down from Darwin and thanks to Michael Gorton for saying a few words on behalf of the group. Despite wet and windy conditions Principal Gerard Foley, Astrida Cooper and Geoff Brown drove to Albury in September to join a group of enthusiastic past students at the Albury Club for lunch. Other than David Lester (’59) all those present had been boarders and called the School home during their time at Ivanhoe. Such were the tales around the table and the obvious affection shown for the School that Mr Foley has promised a boarders reunion for next year! Thanks to David Lester our past students who live in the North enjoyed the hospitality of the Albury Club. 

Richard Merjan (’06) Congratulations to canoeist Richard who competed in Rio with the Lebanese Olympic team. With remarkable focus and holding dual citizenship via his father he has travelled to the world’s slalom venues for the last decade competing for Lebanon.

Interestingly, this is the first time Lebanon has ever made the Olympics in this category! 

Beyond the School term, we applaud Heath for running a School holiday program on-campus to teach coding to our wider School community. 

Joey Katebian (’13) You might recognize this name as a Melbourne Victory forward and captain of the Club’s Youth Squad, but Joey’s commitment and passion for soccer has taken him to the sunny state of Queensland where he now plays with Brisbane Roar in the A-League. Whilst excited to see where his professional football career takes him, Joey also dreams of one day opening up a Harry Potter themed café in Melbourne. 

Matt Zull (’03) Emergent Melburnian hip hop duo Otis High wear their love of their home town proudly in their debut single Welcome Home, a stylish, scratchdappled love letter to the (03) area code simply overflowing with infectious energy. 

Jack Reid (’13) Based in Sapporo, Japan, Jack is playing rugby professionally for a team called the AKK Barbarian Bullets as part of the Top East Competition. Whilst relishing all the playing and travel this adventure affords him, Jack will spend the Christmas period doing volunteer service work with an affiliated charity to IGS. 

OIGs at Macpherson Kelley George Haros (’91) and William Sheehan (’06) first met playing Old Ivanhoe Soccer on the North Ground in 2012. George, the partner of a law firm, offered Will, a law student at the time, a work experience position and the two have been scoring goals at Macpherson Kelley ever since! Now there are four alumni working for this firm! 

Michael Saunders (’03) 150 games and counting…

Michael came onto the AFL list from obscurity in 2009 with a strong running background but without that core of experience around him it took a few years for him to work out how to get the best out of himself from an umpiring sense. ‘It took me until 2011/12 to figure out a routine that suited me.

I had to run all year and do a lot of things right before that consistency of performance came. All of those pieces had to fit together balancing work and life was critical to my success.’ 

Phillis Heslin and Colin Rowse (’46) Geoff Brown (’62) and Astrida Cooper recently joined Colin Rowse and Phillis Heslin to celebrate Colin’s 88th birthday in Moe. Colin is keeping well, devoting a great deal of his time to local community groups such as Rotary and the Rosedale Cemetary Trust. 

Ego Ya! Babies of Alumni Jack Down (’40) Jack was recently recognised by the French Government for his commitment during WW2 as an RAAF Lancaster Bomber pilot by being awarded the French Legion of Honour. The award pays tribute to WW2 veterans who risked their lives for the liberation of France. Geoff Brown (’62) and Astrida Cooper visited Jack at home to see his award and wonderfully detailed scrap books compiled throughout his life. 

Nathaniel Swain (’07) Nathaniel recently competed in the 3 Minute Thesis competition. Having won the Melbourne University Final he competed in the ASIA Pacific Grand Final at the University of Queensland on Friday 30 September.

Nathaniel presented his thesis ‘Teenage Crime Making Sense of It’ and was announced as the runner up in the field of 50 top PhD students from the leading universities across the Asia-Pacific region. 

OIGA news The School welcomes back the Dodemaide Family Bill Dodemaide (’40) is a name that is synonymous with Ivanhoe Grammar School. Bill’s son Michael is a member of the Class of 1976 and has lived with his American wife Susan and boys Nicholas and Justin in San Francisco for many years. Over on holidays Michael and family recently visited the School accompanied by his mother Enid to relive fond memories and reminisce about days long ago! 

Dr Anthony Radford has been recognised as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his distinguished service to science and global public health. Tony is from the Class of 1972 and was instrumental in the development of technology to diagnose tuberculosis. 

The Waddell Boys Knox Waddell’s great grandfather J C Sanders built Beaufort Manor in 1876 at which time it was named Lattaville. Gunnie, Knox and Graeme Waddell all attended Ivanhoe. Gunnie (’37) was born at Beaufort Manor. Gunnie is aged 97 and lives in Canberra, Knox (’43) lives in country Victoria and provided the photograph, Graeme (’44) lives in Melbourne. The Knox family travelled to Yea early in 2016 to revisit Beaufort Manor. 

The Ridgeway Club A club is only as good as those who lead it and we have been extremely fortunate to have had two excellent leaders in President James Norman (’86) and Vice President Grant Nichol steer the Club through a very successful year. The Club is well on its way to fulfilling its goal of assisting to fund the Year 9 Enterprise Centre and also contributed substantial funds to the refurbishment of the multimedia room in the Creative Arts Centre at Plenty.

Lunches were held at some excellent venues throughout the year and once again a very successful golf weekend was held at Cape Schanck.

The family also generously donated a pencil portrait of John, the painting of which hangs in the ANZ Building in Collins Street. The pencil portrait was created some 20 years ago by artist Wes Walters and now hangs in the Meeting Room. A short biography of John’s very significant career is placed at the entrance to the meeting room confirming John’s membership of the School’s Gallery of Achievement and to inspire young Ivanhoe students to be bold in their future-thinking and aspirations.

John has also left his legacy in Buckley House through the creation of an annual award known as the John Gough Spirit of Ivanhoe Award. 

As a Fidelis Society member, the Late John Gough AO OBE remembered the School in his Will with the School recognising the Gough Family gift through the naming of the John Gough Meeting Room located in the Middle Years Centre. John’s widow Rosemary, daughters Sarah and Anna and Anna’s husband Tony recently visited the School to view the Meeting Room.

Meikle Chemistry Award Dux of The Ridgeway Campus in 2015, Lucas Yong, was the joint inaugural recipient together with Luke Rezk of the B A Meikle Award for Chemistry. The Meikle Chemistry Award was generously established last year by the family of the late Andrew Meikle (’82) who in a serendipitous twist not only was taught Mathematics

by Lucas's grandfather, James Yong from Year 9 through to Year 11 but was also his Form Teacher for Year 11. Andrew’s sister, Gail Gilham and other family members were present to meet both recipients. 

Supporting Ivanhoe Scholarships at Ivanhoe At the recent Donor Thank You event held in the School House Boardroom, Principal Gerard Foley thanked donors for their philanthropic support of the School; ‘Your gifts cannot be overestimated, and are never taken for granted’.

The focus of seeking philanthropic support this year has been on seeking gifts for access scholarships. Over the last five years, nine new scholarships have been established – all for worthy students whose families could not afford an Ivanhoe education without financial assistance. Many of the guests at the Donor Thank You event were involved in creating these scholarships.

The most recently named scholarships include the Sinclaire Trust Scholarship funded by Board member Sandra Ivory, the Staff Supported Scholarship which is currently supported by 54 current and past staff, and the Norma Marsh Scholarship established by Randal Marsh (’77) as a gift to his mother Norma to mark the occasion of her recent 90th birthday. After Gerard’s moving words, one guest commented - ‘I want to do even more to help those deserving children come to Ivanhoe’.

My father had, and I continue to have a great belief in furthering the opportunities of young people who could not otherwise consider an Ivanhoe education. Ivanhoe has so much to offer, including cocurricular opportunities, which help build the all-round individual. The Sinclaire Trust wishes all 2017 Scholarship recipients a rewarding time at Ivanhoe and an exciting future.
