From the Principal As I sit in my office writing this article it is hard to believe that another year is drawing to a close.

As always much has happened since the last edition of Ivanhoe News, with this edition focusing on two key attributes of an Ivanhoe Learner – Courage and Compassion.

These attributes are evidenced across many areas of the School: through our Global Citizenship Program, in the Performing Arts, during another successful winter and spring sporting season, and in the myriad of service learning experiences students have participated in – both locally and internationally.

Students will have the opportunity to further develop these skills by undertaking four key project-based learning units, covering the Sciences, Entrepreneurship, Humanities and Global Citizenship (including Service Learning). This unique program offers students a taste of learning at university, but with the care and support of a school structure it will prepare them even more thoroughly for their studies in the Senior Years.

At the Board Retreat earlier this year considerable discussion focused on Master Planning for the School.

Recent projects included the building of both a Senior and Middle School at Plenty Campus, and a new oval and car park at Ivanhoe Campus.

Of course, these attributes will also continue to be developed at our new Year 9 University Campus which will open in the Early Commencement Program this year.

In an Australian first, Year 9 students from both Ivanhoe and Plenty campuses are undertaking a year-long hybrid university-school experience. Over the course of the year, students will be exposed to the kind of big ideas you would expect to find in a university environment. While still continuing with a strong academic focus on the basics in Science, Mathematics, Language and the like, a new set of skills will also be taught, including intercultural understanding, creativity, innovation and enterprise.

The next scheduled project at Ivanhoe Campus is the building of a new Sports Centre. This new state-of-the-art facility will include four full size basketball/volleyball/netball/ badminton courts, a fifty metre pool for swimming and water polo, classrooms, weights and aerobics rooms and rooftop Physical Education spaces. Following approval by the Council, planning is well underway to commence the project in 2019.

These skills will prepare our graduates for the global world of work and university which they will enter.

Board Developments On behalf of the Board of Governors, I would like to share two recent changes to the Board. Welcoming Tina Savona and farewelling Catherine Brown.

Catherine Brown

We wish to farewell Board Member, Catherine Brown, who has served on the Board since 2013. In April this year, after four years outstanding service as a member of the Board of Governors, Catherine Brown relinquished her role due to numerous external organisations competing for her time.

Catherine’s association with Ivanhoe Grammar School began in 2008 when her elder son Will from the Class of 2013 commenced in Year 7. Catherine’s younger son, Fraser, is currently in Year 11. She has been Chair of the Philanthropy Sub-Committee of the Board, working with Astrida Cooper, Director of Development, and has totally transformed this area of the School.

Outside of Ivanhoe, Catherine continues as CEO of the Lord Mayors Charitable Foundation. She has a background in law and not-for-profit and community organisations. Catherine has held numerous senior executive positions with a number of community organisations and is a former CEO of Brain Foundation Victoria (now Brain Link). Catherine’s contribution to the School has been immense and on behalf of the entire school community we thank her for all that she has done and wish her well in her endeavours.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Tina Savona to the Board of Governors. She brings great skills and experience to the Board and is already making a valuable contribution.

In addition to her significant corporate and legal skills, her perspective as a current parent at our Plenty Campus is invaluable.

Tina holds a Masters of Laws degree (2013), Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Economics (invited to undertake honours). Tina is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (having completed the AICD Company Directors course in 2010) and a member of the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association.

Tina commenced her working career as a solicitor at Mallesons Stephen Jacques (currently known as King Wood Mallesons). Tina currently leads the in-house legal function for the Cargill Incorporated businesses in Australia and New Zealand. Cargill Incorporated is an American privately held multinational corporation which provides global products and services across a number of industries. During her six years as the lead for Cargill in Australia Tina has overseen significant activity, integration of acquired businesses and litigation.

We would like to acknowledge a number of staff who are retiring after more than 20 years’ service to Ivanhoe Grammar School.

GARRY CHAPMAN

LOLITA JOHNSON

Garry began at Ivanhoe in January 1990 as a Year 5 teacher at the Memorial Junior School and in 1997 was appointed Curriculum Coordinator of Buckley House as a member of the Leadership Team. His role required him to also work at Plenty Campus in a cross-campus capacity, which continued until 2014. By 2005 he was working in a curriculum leadership role in Middle Years and was soon leading a team to develop a completely new Year 9 Program. The team introduced an experiential program, including a La Trobe University experience that has been successful for over a decade and has now transformed into a year-long hybrid university-school experience with the launch of our University Campus. In 2015 Garry stepped down from the curriculum leadership role and returned to classroom teaching as a Year 9 Mentor and Humanities teacher, two roles which he really enjoyed. As a Middle Years teacher, Garry had an incredible impact on many students and made a lasting impression on them. He saw their potential and helped develop students’ confidence.

For 29 years Lolita has inspired generations of students as a teacher of English and English Literature. For many years she led the English Department to the achievement of outstanding academic results. At Lolita’s core is a love and command of her subject discipline. In the classroom Lolita was renowned for instilling an enthusiasm and encouraging the highest standards from her students. In this they have had as their model Lolita herself: her preparation meticulous and her feedback on their work rigorous. Lolita spent long hours of her own time, at home and during term breaks dedicated to lesson preparation and correction of student essays. As Head of English Lolita provided collaborative and firm leadership.

She mentored numerous teachers over the years. She ensured the School remained on top of curriculum requirements through her participation in the relevant associations and committees; as a consequence our student performances were geared to meet and exceed official standards.

During Garry’s 28 years at Ivanhoe he led three Cambodia Service Projects, plus a number of student tours to India and China. While we hope, after 28 years of service, that Garry enjoys his well-deserved retirement, he will be missed.

Lolita encouraged students to take personal responsibility for their learning and she supported them to reach their full potential. On a personal level Lolita dislikes drawing attention to herself and her achievements. All the more reason, then, to ensure her formidable service is recorded in these pages.

Long Serving Staff ROBERT PRINCE Robert joined the School as an Economics teacher in 1986, having previously taught at Thomastown High School for 11 years. He was the Commerce Consultant for the Northern Metropolitan Region of the Education Department and held the position of Head of Commerce at Ivanhoe for 15 years during which time he taught VCE and IB Economics.

Adding another string to his bow, Robert was a staff representative on the ‘90s Committee and on Ball Committees in 2005 and 2008. His interest in the school community, beyond the academic sphere, led to his appointment in 1999 as Executive Officer of the School Family Association, now known as Ivanhoe Parents and Friends. He also held one of the most unique positions for a male staff member, as the School representative for the Ladies’ Association. With Robert’s guidance, the Association has raised more than $500,000 over the last 20 years.

Robert and his wife, Maree, have also seen their three sons – Stephen, Simon and Jonathon – benefit from an Ivanhoe education. Now, after 32 years, it is time for them to enjoy retirement, travel overseas and spend time with family.

SUE CARROLL Sue came to Ivanhoe as a secretary in 1995 and over the ensuing 22 years worked in most parts of the School, including the Print Room, the Development Office, Middle Years, the Music Office and Outdoor Education office. Sue was always willing to take on varied roles when asked, even at short notice. She demonstrated a great work ethic and regularly stepped up to fill in for colleagues on long service leave and other short-term assignments. Sue has been a very loyal and dedicated staff member, well-liked and respected by all. This can also be said about Sue’s sisters – Deidre, Lisa and Geraldine – who have all worked at Ivanhoe for many years.

Sue decided to leave Ivanhoe in May to pursue a new direction in a family business. We thank her for her wonderful contribution and wish her well for the future.

Orchestra in 1998 and the size and quality of this group increased over subsequent years.

In 2001, Stephen was appointed to the position of Head of Music, where he has remained until his retirement. During these years, the Performance Ensemble Program has grown to include Locksley Symphonic Band, Locksley String Orchestra, Locksley Chorale, Ridgeway Wind Symphony, Abbado Strings, Ridgeway Chorale, Golden Symphony Orchestra, Big Band, JFP and numerous Quartets, Quintets and other Chamber Ensembles. The Music Program now provides a varied and eclectic offering and Stephen can look back and take credit for his many achievements in the last 22 years. We thank Stephen for his valuable contribution and wish him all the best.

We would also like to acknowledge the following long serving staff who are leaving Ivanhoe: MARK HORSFORD – after 19 years, during which he has been Year 9 Level Manager, involved in the Cadet Program and Cambodia Service Project, Mark accepted a position as Head of Service Learning at Melbourne Grammar School. We wish Mark all the best in his future endeavours and thank him for his wonderful contribution.

FANNY PETROULIAS – after 18 years as a teacher of Economics and Accounting at The Ridgeway Campus, we thank Fanny for her significant contribution and wish her well in her retirement.

RHONDA CHANDLER – retired in June after 17 years, having worked in Buckley House as a Primary Numeracy Support teacher. Russell Feben and the Buckley House community express their gratitude to Rhonda.

JAN CRACKNELL – retired in August after 15 years as an academic staff member, much of it teaching International students. Our best wishes to Jan for the future.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS

Stephen began at the School in 1996 teaching Year 7 and 8 Band Class, as well as some Clarinet and Saxophone tutoring and conducting the Concert Band. At that time Middle Years was located at Locksley. There were no specific Middle Years ensembles other than some involvement in choir, so the first ensemble to be established was the Locksley Symphonic Band along with the Senior Years Saxophone Quartet. The Locksley Symphonic Band was quite small at the time with about 12 players, but as the number of playing musicians increased, over the next few years this Band grew in size and became quite a prominent ensemble for students. Stephen took on the role of conductor of the Golden Symphony

It is with great pleasure that the School acknowledges Sil Testolin, who has just achieved a remarkable 40 years of continuous service, working under three Principals – Charles Sligo, Rod Fraser and Gerard Foley. Sil began at Ivanhoe in 1978 as a Groundsman, becoming Maintenance Foreman in 1993, Supervisor of the Maintenance Department in 1998 and Maintenance Manager in 1999, a position he still holds.

Sil is admired for his genial, can-do attitude and he is a much-loved member of the Grounds and Maintenance team. Sil joins an elite group of staff (still living) who have served for 40 years plus – Nigel Kendall, David Waugh and Ann Dowden.

Q&A with Robert Rizzo Robert Rizzo is delighted to join University Campus as part of the inaugural team. He will be Head of Lincoln House, Mentor Group teacher and he will be teaching the Core Science and Global inquiry-based units.

Robert started at The Ridgeway Campus in 2014 as an emergency teacher. The following year, he was a Year 7 Mentor Group teacher teaching Humanities and English. But his journey to the role at University Campus really began with his experience the following year in the Year 9 Program.

‘I joined the amazing Year 9 Mentor Group team led by Mark Horsford, teaching Year 9 Science and Humanities as well as Year 8 Faith Ethics and Attitudes and accepted the exciting role of Curriculum Leader: Faith, Ethics and Attitudes.’

Earlier this year, Robert accepted a major pastoral care role as Co-Deputy Head of Year 9 which has proven excellent preparation for his Head of Lincoln House role at University Campus.

What are you most looking forward to about the new role at University Campus?

The dynamic manner in which we can deliver high quality curriculum and the amazing opportunity we have to build a strong school community, as well as introduce students to higher order thinking using the excellent resources of University Campus and La Trobe University.

What opportunities do you think University Campus will provide students in preparation for their senior years?

The access to La Trobe University experts in their respective fields will be really exciting for students. A series of lecturers built into the curriculum schedule will help to enhance and foster their higher order thinking skills within their respective subject areas. Students will also have the incredible access to incredible La Trobe University facilities such as the Wildlife Sanctuary and Scientific Laboratories, in which they will conduct major research projects and experiments within a university setting. These experiences will only help

Students will have the opportunity to build a strong sense of community with their peers and the local community through a range of activities and major projects during their Communities and Celebration subject allocation.

University Campus will provide exciting opportunities and experiences for our Year 9 students, that will help them to foster a greater sense of personal responsibility and resilience, with their overall wellbeing, school experience and preparation for senior school being a paramount focus for our University Campus pastoral team and teachers

broader community, leading to students encompassing a greater sense of empathy, leadership and responsibility as they are our future leaders in an ever growing complex world. The House Pastoral System, will enable a greater emphasis to be placed on the individual wellbeing of every single student at University Campus, in which they will be mentored and given the structure and advice from experienced teaching professionals, to develop a growth mindset and foster a higher level of interpersonal skills, initiative and academic rigour.

What do you think will make the biggest difference to Year 9 students in this experience?

A young person at this critical age of development can display courage and kindness by speaking up to injustice or bullying, even when it may not be so popular to do so within their friendship groups. This can have a really positive impact on the school community.

The year will be different in so many ways; on an academic, social and personal level. The extensive range of Year 9 International Trips will help foster their sense of the world around them as global citizens and being given the opportunity to build a strong sense of community through interschool initiatives and major projects within the

Celebrating Family As we approach the end of 2018 our parent support groups should be congratulated on organising numerous successful social and fundraising events across the School. We are indebted to the many parents who give their time and energy to bring our community together. Here is a snapshot of the wonderful work undertaken by some of our parent groups in the past few months and we look forward to acknowledging the contribution of all parent groups at the Ivanhoe Parents and Friends Thank You Function.

GREEK PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION DINNER DANCE

FRIENDS OF SNOW SPORTS

KAYAK PARENTS SUPPORT GROUP

The Greek Parents’ Association Dinner Dance is an annual event organised jointly by Ivanhoe Grammar School and Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School.

Children from both schools take Greek dance lessons and learn about Greek culture, in preparation for their performance at the Dance in May. Next year marks the 45th Anniversary of the Association, which has donated significant funds to both schools, and we look forward to celebrating this milestone with them.

The Friends of Snow Sports held a season opening function and team dinners at Mt Buller where our students participated in training sessions and time trials, in preparation for the Victorian and National Intershools Championships. They welcomed new skiiers and parents, many of whom volunteered to assist the Teacher in Charge, Murray Gill.

The Kayak Parents Support Group have organised barbecues at local slalom races and transported the school trailer with boats and equipment to a training camp at Penrith. They have also assisted with the King River camp and the 2018 Victorian Junior Slalom and Downriver Championships, where 38 students competed. Without our parent volunteers, the School’s kayaking program would not run as smoothly and efficiently as it does.

FRIENDS OF BUCKLEY HOUSE The Friends of Buckley House held a Mother’s Day stall and raffle, their biggest ever Father’s Day stall and breakfast, plus Casual for a Cause Days to raise funds for specific charities like the Royal Children’s Hospital, the MND Big Freeze event and Drought Angels for farmers in need. They also supported the Buckley House Production of Aladdin Jr.

IN TUNE - FRIENDS OF PLENTY CAMPUS PERFORMING ARTS In Tune supports the Performing Arts program at Plenty Campus. Their main fundraising focus has been to enable the purchase of a new grand piano, in conjunction with The Ridgeway Club.

They assisted with the production of High School Musical, providing meal packages for students, staff and musicians during rehearsals and performances. They have raised significant funds through merchandise, a Mother’s Day stall and Concert for Cambodia.

FRIENDS OF PLENTY PRIMARY SCHOOL The Friends of Plenty Primary School coordinated a Mother’s Day breakfast and raffle, the Primary Disco, Father’s Day breakfast and a September Footy Colours Day. They will also operate the Little Bean coffee cart on Election Day in November and at other Primary events during the year.

FRIENDS OF RIDGEWAY THEATRE The Friends of Ridgeway Theatre supported the VCE Play and Monologues, and the Short Film Festival, by providing refreshments for guests and dressing the foyer of the Schuster Theatre. They are also coordinating a pie drive fundraising activity.

Silk & Spice Gala Ball It is three years since our Centenary Ball in 2015, so there was great anticipation among parents and staff for this year’s major social event.

The Organising Committee rose to the challenge and produced a colourful and memorable evening.

As Peter Hitchener said in his introduction at the Grand Hyatt, we had 600 of Ivanhoe’s finest at the Silk & Spice Gala Ball on Saturday 11 August. Our MC, Lana Murphy from the Class of 2010, welcomed guests and kept the night flowing smoothly.

Ben Clark, Class of 2002, fresh from his appearance on Channel 9’s The Voice, enthralled us with his powerful performance and the ever popular Baker Boys Band had the dance floor packed for the entire night.

Highlights of the evening included the draw of the Tuition Fee Raffle – congratulations to the Kocev family in Buckley House – and the auction of the Fascinating India Tour provided by Meridian Travel.

We are indebted to our generous sponsors for their support of the Silk & Spice Gala Ball; proceeds from the event will be directed to a needs-based scholarship fund to enable a student to attend Ivanhoe who would otherwise not be able to do so.

Character Building Journeys

CAMBODIA SERVICE PROJECT The Cambodia Service Project is one of the signature programs at Ivanhoe Grammar School. The 2018 service trip ran for 16 days and comprised 64 students and 12 staff.

Ivanhoe Grammar School has a long-standing tradition of annual service projects to Cambodia. The School has been involved with many capacity building projects over the years, working with local aid and community organisations. Students work with communities in Phnom Penh and the Peak Sneng village in the Siem Reap region, primarily focusing on several schools.

In 2018 the School partnered with six organisations and villages, The Demonstration School, Indochina Starfish Foundation, Happy Football Cambodia, Peak Sneng Thymey village, Samraong village where Angkor Kids Centre is situated and Kralanh District Eco Tourism Development Project in Char Kraom village. The School has raised money to buy 85 teacher starter kits for graduating teachers who will work in rural areas. Students also spent six days working on building a new school library and raising the funds for new building materials in the Peak Sneng community.

This truly unique learning experience engages our students and is often referred to by students as a life-changing experience.

A reflection from Tristan and Hamish on the Cambodia Service Project: Today all the groups travelled to the cultural village where we met up with many of the students who we taught in the duration of our time in Peak Sneng. We greatly valued this experience as it gave us a designated time where we could properly farewell the friends we made on this trip. It was a day full of tears as we said our last goodbyes to the many Cambodians who we will affectionately remember. This day reinforced that we did not only travel to Cambodia to teach and provide physical service to these people, moreover to provide emotional connections to these people and to show them that they are important in our lives also. This emotional connection was what drove both Cambodian and Ivanhoe students to tears as we saw the true impact of our time in Cambodia. This was a very fitting end to this incredibly rewarding experience.

ROUND SQUARE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM Deputy Principal/Head of Plenty Campus, Dan Brown, and two Year 11 students Stefan Fazzino and Annaliese Filippis flew to Harvard University in Boston to be involved in a Round Square Research Symposium at the Harvard Graduate School of Education on Tuesday 12 June.

Ivanhoe Grammar School was in the unique position of being the only school selected from Australia as a Research Ambassador School. This international study runs for two years and aims to find out how Round Square educators support students’ development of international understanding.

A reflection from Year 11 student, Annaliese Filippis on the Round Square Symposium:

A World of Opportunities

The Symposium centred on the concept of international understanding through connections that we make. The project involved collaborating with eleven other Round Square schools to share ways that our schools develop a global awareness. I believe that our school promotes a global outlook by adopting the Round Square disciplines as well as through the abundance of overseas service projects and trips the school offers. Aside from these, we also foster an international understanding on a day-to day basis through our ELICOS program and the various guest speakers invited to present during assemblies.

As part of the Year 9 program students can take part in an international journey. In mid-September groups of students and staff went to China, Thailand, India and Central Australia. These trips have a focus on global awareness and sustainability and give students a deeper appreciation of the world around them.

Immersion in different cultures not only engages students but also challenges and inspires them as they go through a period of personal growth.

Students spent time connecting with communities and schools, visiting significant landmarks and gaining a deep understanding of the history of the region. Most importantly students took part in a service project, giving back to the local community in a positive and meaningful way.

The research project is still ongoing as each school has taken back the information discussed at the symposium and are working to further develop exactly how each school fosters an international understanding. This experience reinforced the importance for young people to have a global outlook in today’s world. The benefits associated with being a global citizen extend far beyond our own lives as it connects us with like-minded people who are willing to learn about global issues, understand them and eventually work together to try and help solve them.

Acts of Service: students on Brotherhood of St Laurence Urban Camp

Courage and compassion is grounded in the cycle of wellbeing and service.

By teaching self-care, students learn how to care for their community and the world.

The relationship between wellbeing and learning is well documented as having critical importance to the development of the whole person. But perhaps less well-known is the relationship between wellbeing and service; the sense of wellbeing that comes from creating meaningful change in the service of others. At Ivanhoe Grammar School students learn the importance of self-care from the Early Learning Centre, right through to Year 12 and the positive effects of personal wellbeing can be seen everywhere; in school achievements, engagement in activities and the capacity to extend care into the community and the world.

There are a number of ways that wellbeing and compassion are integrated at the School. Led both by student initiatives and by the School’s Pastoral Staff, the Wellbeing Program is comprehensive and informed by the Ivanhoe Learner, particularly the attributes of Compassion and Courage.

Framing self-care as an act of self-compassion leads to an ongoing cycle of wellbeing. By perpetually asking students to act with compassion towards themselves we are allowing them to see the true meaning of compassion and understand how it can be applied to those in need.

Schools have become much better at recognising and dealing with mental health issues among students and part of this is listening to them and giving them an active role to play in wellbeing activities and programs.

Andrew Fox has been pivotal to the Wellbeing Program since 2001. Assistant Chaplain/Co-Director Charity Committee, Mr Fox said Wellbeing Prefects were introduced at The Ridgeway Campus several years ago.

‘It’s all well and good for adults to come up with what we think kids need,’ he said, ’but it’s really important that we listen to what they’re actually saying that they need … and then refine what we do through their lens.’

Individual self-care programs feed directly into community outreach programs. The Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Urban Camp sees students work with underpriviledged Melbourne families, seniors and refugees and the annual Cambodia Service Project sees students teach locals English and help with community projects.

A student-led wellbeing initiative that began in 2017, Nick the Greyhound has been a weekly visitor to senior students at The Ridgeway Campus. His friendly presence provides Year 12s with perspective and calm. This year’s Wellbeing Prefects Tao Chen and Allegra Sanderson were more than happy to continue the tradition started by last year’s students.

Tao says Nick started as a therapy dog for Year 12 students but those across year levels now enjoy his visits, which helps create an even greater sense of community.

‘Studies have shown that dogs are able to calm and relax people in stressful times,’ Tao says. ‘Having Nick come to the School allows people to forget about school for a couple of minutes, which helps to relieve stress and anxiety levels or even to just come and see a friendly face,’ Plenty Campus Prefect, Flynn Simsek, has introduced a number of similar initiatives at Plenty, including afternoon yoga, table tennis, cooking, gym and basketball. And due to the success of the Therapy Dog Program at The Ridgeway Campus, a similar program has been introduced at Plenty Campus. Miss Icey the Samoyed is now a well-loved member of the Ivanhoe family.

Prefect Allegra Sanderson believes that wellbeing is important to a person’s overall health. A good attitude and positive mindset allows students to feel good about themselves, cope with normal daily stress, and makes it easier to form positive relationships with friends and teachers.

‘Our yoga sessions allow students to relieve stress from the heavy workload in Year 12,’ she says. ‘We have also opened the program to Year 12 teachers, with the aim of building on those relationships and having a positive start to their teaching day - also putting them into a good mood.’

Plenty Campus Prefect Flynn Simsek has also promoted sessions on life skills, dealing with stress, how to study, healthy relationships and financial literacy.

‘I have also helped run wellbeing sessions for students in younger levels,’ Flynn says.

‘These activities, whether they apply directly to personal wellbeing or not, aid in strengthening our wellbeing by helping us deal with uncertainties that we deal with now, or that may lie ahead of us.’

A commitment to the Ivanhoe Learner attributes of Courage and Compassion enable our students to be well-rounded individuals and sets them up to be engaged members of an ever-changing global world. Delivered through personal development and community engagement, students learn the skills and strategies to face a complicated world with the courage and compassion of a young person of character.

Wellbeing Tips • Focus on the positives, while acknowledging that we all have ups and downs and make mistakes.

• Take regular study breaks, leave the house, take a walk and enjoy nature.

• Interacting with nature will improve overall mood and quality of life. It will also help you to concentrate in class and hopefully achieve your goals.

• Setting goals can help you to focus.

• Exercise can help form good habits and release positive hormones that make you feel good.

• If stress becomes overwhelming it is extremely important to seek help. Ivanhoe offers many resources to help students get through stressful times. Seek help from trusted peers or House Leaders who are there to help.

Plenty Campus Visual Arts Exhibition The 22nd Plenty Visual Arts Exhibition celebrated the creative talents of students from all secondary levels. Works on display were from the subject disciplines of Art, Studio Arts, Product Design and Technology, Media and Visual Communication Design.

The exhibition was opened by local artist Alexandra Leti.

Highlights of the evening included the presentation of the Randal Marsh Art and Design Award, the Acquisition Award and the Centenary Product Design and Technology Award.

This year, First Prize of the Randal Marsh Art and Design Award was awarded to Ella Primerano, Year 12 Studio Art, for her artwork exploring synaesthesia. Second Prize was awarded to Olivia Tregambe, Year 12 Studio Art, for her multi-media artwork exploring peoples’ perspectives. The Acquisition Award went to Carrie Killeen, Year 11 Media, for her two photographs that explore gender equality.

Now in its fourth year the Centenary Product Design and Technology Award went to Year 11 student Edward Darby, doing Year 12 Product Design and Technology, for his dinning table.

The Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association presented an Encouragement Award in the Visual Arts to Maddi Baroutas in Year 10. Excellence and Encouragement Awards were also presented to students from each of the years 7 - 10 Visual Arts classes.

It’s a courageous effort to put work on display for public view and what we see is the end result of a creative process. The annual exhibition is a wonderful celebration of this and we congratulate all students.

The Ridgeway Campus Years 7 – 11 Art and Design Exhibition The Years 7 - 11 Art and Design Exhibition showcased innovative and unique student art and product design work.

The exhibition was opened by Georgia Newland, a past student from the Class of 2012, who is currently working at a creative agency called The Word Collective. Georgia acknowledged the School’s role in providing a foundation for where she is today.

This year Jemima Adams, a Year 10 student, was the proud recipient of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association (OIGA) Encouragement Award in Arts. This award is the highlight of the Art and Design Exhibition and was presented to Jemima

by Georgia, in conjunction with Peter Swain, the OIGA Vice President from the class of 1975.

The Deans Art Award was presented to Pippa Pringuer, Year 11, as chosen by Dani Scaramuzzino who has a long association with the Art and Design Department. In addition to this established award, this year saw the introduction of a new award focusing specifically on our product design students, the KNOG Design Award. This award went to Callum Eddings, Logan Parris, Bradley McLaughlan, Julia Moorhen, Ana Jain - all Year 11 students and Year 10 student Brooklyn Hutton.

Departmental Excellence and Special Recognition Awards were also presented to students from each of the Years 7 - 11 Art and Design classes. Congratulations to both students and staff who worked tirelessly in the weeks leading up to the event to ensure that the exhibition was a wonderful success.

The Ridgeway Campus Graduate Art and Design Exhibition The 2018 Graduate Art and Design Exhibition provided an opportunity for graduating students to showcase their creative talents. Studio spaces in ArtsEdge at Locksley were filled with works of students from Studio Arts, Product Design and Technology, and Visual Communication Design.

Award-winning architect and alumnus Randal Marsh (’77) returned to open the exhibition. Randal praised the quality of work on display, congratulating all students. Randal awarded First Prize to Joyce Lam and Second Prize was awarded to both Joel Rogers and Jackson McEwen, while the Randal Marsh Acquisition Award was given to Tom Inglese.

The Centenary Award for Product Design and Technology was recognised again this year. This perpetual award was first presented in 2016, acknowledging the work of a senior student who demonstrated outstanding product design, and use of technology.

Presented by Tom Rickards, Head of Senior Years, Deputy Head of The Ridgeway Campus, the award was given to Alec Hales.

This year saw the continuation of the hugely successful and beneficial relationship built with Daniela Scaramuzzino of Deans Art. Daniela recognised the diverse range of folio themes, innovative use of media, and high standard of production, when presenting the Deans Art Award to Astrid John and Ayda Zhao.

Students and staff should be congratulated for working tirelessly both in and out of class, resulting in a hugely successful exhibition.

Performing Arts

Aladdin Jr. The 2018 primary musical production of Disney’s Aladdin Jr. was presented by Buckley House students from Foundation to Year 6 and ran over two nights, Tuesday 18 September and Wednesday 19 September.

Buckley Hall was totally transformed in a feast of colour into an Arabian oasis as the cast and crew brought to life this popular and celebrated Disney stage show.

Our extremely talented students brought their passion, imagination and energy to the production with some truly unforgettable performances.

A big thank you to all the primary staff who assisted with costumes, make-up, props, coaching and so much more and of course, the outstanding support from our parent community meant that the show came together seamlessly on opening night.

The Ridgeway Campus Short Film Festival The Ridgeway Campus held a Short Film Festival in Term 3 that showcased four short films. Students wrote, cast, filmed and edited four unique short films which enabled them to experience all aspects of filmmaking.

Each film was under 10 minutes in duration, of varied subject matter and the product of an original idea. The festival was a huge success and the students presented funny, insightful and polished work.

Drama Club at Plenty Campus The Drama Club at Plenty Campus spent an entire week, during Term 3, showcasing their fantastic acting skills at evening and lunchtime performances in a series of skits and scenes from many plays under the guidance and direction of Ms Shauna MacEwan. The students performed brilliantly showing creativity and flair and it was a wonderful opportunity for students to perform in front of an appreciative audience.

Global Citizenship

In 2018 the Global Citizenship Centre increased its presence throughout the School, running events and facilitating school-wide discussion around relevant Global Citizenship topics. Each term had a different focus, linked to corresponding U.N. Global Goals and Ivanhoe Learner attributes.

For Term 1, the focus was on Gender Equality, highlighting the Ivanhoe Learner attributes Courageous and Collaborative.

In Term 2, students explored Indigenous Issues and Awareness by being reflective and ethical. Term 3 was all about sustainability and how we can be more sustainable as a school by being innovative and balanced. Lastly, in Term 4 we explored what it means to be compassionate through a focus on peace and justice.

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK With our term focus on Indigenous Issues and Awareness, in June we recognised National Reconciliation Week through events across the School. Student Global Ambassadors organised library displays, informative posters, and assemblies exploring reconciliation and this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme ‘Don’t Keep History a Mystery.’

Year 9 Global Ambassador Lexie Wooller reflected that ‘it was through raising awareness about this topic that I learnt that a large part of reconciliation is not just about acknowledgement.

It is about what we as a community can learn from our nation’s first people, rather than what we can learn about them.’

At Plenty Campus, students and staff created and signed an Acknowledgement of Country pledge, and at Buckley House, students designed their own unique flags which incorporated elements from the Australian, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander flags. According to Year 5 Global Ambassador Zara Shaw, ‘National Reconciliation Week was a time for all of us to reflect and acknowledge what happened in the past between the Indigenous and the European settlers. We all learnt that we need to respect each other no matter what race you are or beliefs you have, we are all equal.’

PITCH FOR THE PLANET In Term 3 the focus was on sustainability and we started the term off with a visit from humanitarian and sustainable lifestyle expert d’Arcy Lunn. d’Arcy met with students and staff from primary through senior years, speaking about how we can all live a more sustainable lifestyle by creating our own ‘Teaspoons of Change’ – personal choices, decisions and actions that have a positive impact on people and the planet.

Inspired to create their own ‘Teaspoons of Change’, over 100 students and staff worked to come up with their own innovative pitches for how we can be more sustainable as a school. Over 50 pitches were created from across the school community and showcased at Pitch for the Planet, an exhibition exploring how our school can work towards being more sustainable. Opening night of the exhibition was a huge success, with over 90 student, staff, and parent attendees.

GLOBAL AMBASSADORS This year the Global Citizenship Centre was supported by our student leadership group Global Ambassadors. Twenty students from Years 5 through 10 from both campuses were elected as Global Ambassadors. They participated in training to develop their global citizenship knowledge and skills and ran casual clothes days, assemblies, and other school events and initiatives aimed at facilitating discussion around global citizenship and making students more aware of what they can do around the school and in their own lives to be active and effective global citizens.

‘Being a Global Ambassador has really opened my eyes to the opportunities that Ivanhoe has given me to be a part of something great. A student perspective...

Year 11 student, Khushi Jadhav was recognised in 2018 in the Australia Day Honours when she received a Community Award for Outstanding Dedication to Community Service. She shared with us what she believes is the most important issue facing youth today.

I believe an important issue facing our youth locally and globally is education.

Education can be defined in many ways and is relevant to many facets of life. Young people living in poverty-stricken countries require further education, everyday problem-solving skills and encouragement to become innovative and resourceful to live a sustainable life. There is a need for youth living in developed countries to think outside the box or to make the box bigger despite the technology, social and electronic media challenges.

AGSV ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS Third Straight Victory for AGSV Girls’ Athletics Team!

This year the AGSV Combined Athletics Carnival was staged at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park under blue skies. The Girls Team dominated the field to win their third athletics premiership in succession and their fourth premiership in five years!

The Boys Team continued to progress and scored 60 points more than the previous year and for the second time in the School’s history, the School was able to win the ‘unofficial’ Combined Premiership for the highest score across both genders.

BASKETBALL Our Firsts Girls’ team won 5 games and lost 5 games for the season, which wasn’t too bad considering we lost our first 3 games! Captain Zoe Vodden and Alana Mierisch both made the AGSV Representative team and were stand out performers.

SOCCER Despite a slow start to the season with both the boys (1 win from 4 games) and girls (2 wins from 4 games), both teams remained competitive throughout the season with the boys eventually making the semi-final only to be beaten by eventual premiers, Trinity. Spiros Vlahos and Yusra Tawfic were named Captain and Vice-Captain respectively of the AGSV soccer teams.

CROSS COUNTRY Although we had a disappointing season in cross country, it was great to see Year 10 boy Tom Langdon acknowledged as the best Intermediate runner across all schools in the AGSV. Hopefully Tom’s performances will lay the groundwork for a move up the ladder in the next year or two.

FOOTBALL Despite losing the first two games of the year (and the first one was to eventual premiers Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School), our First XVIII were still in Finals contention right up to the last game; however Assumption College proved to be too strong and we just missed out on a semi-final berth.

From an individual player perspective, it was great to see Tom McKenzie selected in the State U18 team, and to also see our Captain, Kane Veliou winning the David O’Halloran trophy for the best player this season.

For the first time ever, we had a Girls’ Football team participating in the Senior AGSV/APS competition – and while we had a mixed season we did well to finish in the top 4 and play off for 3rd spot on finals day.

A highlight of the football season was our victory in the Herald Sun Shield Girls’ Intermediate Division 2 Grand Final. The girls travelled to Ballarat where they played Luther College, winning by 49 points. Imogen Hammond was named the best player on the ground.

SNOWSPORTS The 2018 Snowsports season was a great success with the most abundant snowfall seen in years.

The Victorian Interschools is the biggest single snow-racing event in the southern hemisphere, with over 5000 students competing each year in 9 different disciplines.

AEROBICS The 2018 Aerobic Gymnastics season was very successful with many individuals and groups performing at a very high level. Over 50 students competed at the primary and secondary AeroSchools State Championships in July.

The Buckley House team made up of 30 primary students finished second in the Victorian Champion School award.

Everyone performed wonderfully pulling out personal best performances during their routine. The competition was a success as 20 Ivanhoe athletes qualified for the AeroSchools National Championships that was held in Queensland in September.

Our team of 32 racers from primary to Year 12 achieved some notable results at the Victorian Interschools, with seven Ivanhoe students placed in the top 15 competitors or top six teams in their events.

NETBALL Given the successes of previous seasons, we once again had high expectations of our Netball team, but despite defeating eventual premiers Geelong Grammar in Round 1, we couldn’t maintain consistency and a few losses meant we slid to fifth placing on the ladder come season end. Our Captain, Suli Leota who was plagued by injury throughout the season, was named Captain of the AGSV Team.

Welcome Shanghai Students ‘It is wonderful to see our students from Shanghai transition so well into their new learning environment and to receive such a warm welcome.’

- LEISL BRUHN, DEAN OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS In July 2018 the School welcomed fifteen new students from Shanghai to complete their VCE studies. All fifteen students have settled in well at Ivanhoe and Plenty Campuses and we recently had the chance to catch up with two of them.

Crystal Liao is based at Plenty Campus, making friends and settling in well. ‘The students at Plenty Campus are very friendly, and the international students who studied here before helped us a lot. The reason why I like studying at Ivanhoe Grammar School the most is that I like the people here.’

In 2015 Ivanhoe Grammar School began a ‘2 + 1’ High School Program with students at the Shanghai Foreign Languages School. As part of our Global Citizenship initiative, students undertook intensive English courses in Year 10, followed by their study of VCE Units 1 and 2 in Year 11.

Classes in the Shanghai Program are taught by local teachers, with the quality assurance and curriculum, overseen by Ivanhoe Grammar School staff ensuring an education of the highest standard. The aim of this program is to offer the best of Chinese and Australian education, by allowing students to commence their studies in China before coming to Melbourne to complete their final year of VCE and determine a pathway to an Australian university.

Asked what challenges she has faced since moving to Australia, Crystal responded that speaking and understanding English was by far her biggest hurdle but that she is working to overcome this by talking with her teachers.

Crystal has big plans for the future but is looking forward to taking a trip with friends once she succeeds in getting into her favourite university.

Samwell Zhu is based at The Ridgeway Campus and is making the most of the sport and music programs. He plays the clarinet and plans to join the Wind Symphony and Golden Orchestra. A teenager with a positive attitude, Samwell is getting used to Australian food stating, ‘I’m good with the Australian food. As long as it is cooked and tastes not too bad, it is all right.’ He has some funny observations about Ivanhoe commenting that the School’s House Program, ‘..is just like Harry Potter as Ivanhoe also has four houses’.

Looking toward his future Samwell said, ‘After finishing the VCE I will try to be a doctor because medicine is a career that saves people’s lives and I would like to be a person like that.

Anyway, it is pretty good to be here and everything is under control.’

OIGA News From the President It has been a very important year for the Association. For the first time in its history every one of our Year 12 Valedicts became Life Members of the OIGA and it is my pleasure to welcome them as Old Ivanhoe Grammarians. A simple message to them — over the years you will be invited to attend your class reunions, participate in special events and join one of our special interest groups or associated sporting clubs. The OIGA is your Association and by being actively involved you will ensure its relevance for generations to come as others have done before you.

Our Cocktails and Connections networking event this year was another worthwhile event allowing alums from all walks of life and eras to meet and share their experiences of life in the work place. My thanks go to Lana Murphy (’10) for compering the night and to all our sponsors whose support was invaluable to its success. Our Class Reunion Program enabled us to ‘reach, connect and support’ hundreds of alums this year, not only in Melbourne but in Adelaide and Perth as well. Again my thanks to our Councillors and past and present staff who give up their time to support this worthwhile program. Our sporting clubs had mixed results in 2018 with our Women’s AFL Team making the Preliminary Final in their first year of competition. Reunions Reach, connect and support our alumni – that is the key objective of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association. One of the key ways we meet this objective is to host a reunions for various cohorts throughout the year. Here are some recent highlights – hopefully these paragraphs jog your memory so that next time you are invited to join your classmates, you will be inclined to do so!

Class of 1988 - The Ridgeway Campus 30 Year Reunion

Class of 1998 – Plenty Campus 20 Year Reunion

The Gallery in Buckley Hall was nearly at capacity when the Class of 1988 Reunion took place in April. The event attracted over 70 alumni, guests and staff members and in a first for Ivanhoe, the speeches and anecdotes were live-streamed via Facebook so that members of the class who were overseas or otherwise detained, were able to follow proceedings. Paul Bergamo did a great job in gathering his classmates, organising the technology, and interviewing some of the key characters from this era, including John Stevens. Staff members, including Ian Le Page and David Gibbs, were on hand to hear how this cohort had developed from their colourful beginnings. Attendees also included current parents Craig Campbell and Dina Pappas, whose son Joshua is in Year 9 at Plenty Campus.

Not sure if it was the chance to catch up with their classmate Jake Uljans, brother of Moon Dog Craft Brewery co-founder Josh, but we had a terrific turnout for the Plenty Campus 20 Year Reunion.

Held at Moon Dog in Richmond on a cold, wet night in July, the reunion proved to be a great night with an update from OIGA President Wayne Vanderwert and festivities continuing well into the evening. Staff attending included Geoff Place (’77) who managed to stay on the soft drinks all night, as he was only part way through ‘dry July’ - which is great a effort when you are spending your Friday night in a brewery!

Class of 1998 – The Ridgeway Campus 20 Year Reunion As has been our practice for some years now, we hosted the 20 Year Reunion at Vasko in Ivanhoe on Friday 11 May. What a great event, with 80 alumni and staff attending. Based on the significant noise levels on the night, we know that everyone had a great time; but to their credit, you could have heard a pin drop as the 1998 School Captain, Chris Willis, provided a poignant reminder of the importance of staying in touch with each other and the School.

Our Principal, Gerard Foley provided an update on the many developments underway or planned and many of the Class of 1998 agreed to return to the School at some point for an informal tour and to see how the School has progressed in their absence.

Class of 2013 – Plenty Campus 5 Year Reunion Alex Bacskos, now working part-time at the School, led the way in gathering well over half his cohort to Temple Brewing in East Brunswick for the Plenty Campus 5 Year Reunion in June. Temple Brewing, with Nick Pang (’94) in charge, has been one of our preferred venues for Plenty Campus Reunions over the last few years. Vice President of the OIGA, Peter Swain, provided a brief welcome to the Class of 2013 and School Captain, Nathaniel Karam, responded and proposed a toast to Plenty Campus Class of 2013. The reunion was attended by six Plenty Campus staff members including Pippa Lidgett and Lawrence Dalton – surely testimony to the quality of this year level.

Class of 2013 - The Ridgeway Campus 5 Year Reunion Former staff member Tony MacManus was there to see how his former charges, had progressed as was current staff member Andrew Fox. Elise Dunstan (’01), Vice President of the OIGA, hosted the event and knew many of the attendees through her previous role as Alumni Relations Manager in the Development Office, School Captain, Shiu-Li Lai, (’13) was at the event and has recently joined the OIGA Council, along with classmate Heath Gilham. Their fresh ideas and insight will ensure that the OIGA continues to reach, support and connect with younger alumni.

Class of 2008 – The Ridgeway Campus 10 Year Reunion This was a reunion of special significance - not just because of the great attendance by alumni and staff, but 2008 was the first year at Ivanhoe for our Principal, Gerard Foley. The Principal enjoyed seeing many of his first Ivanhoe Year 12 students including Jade Darrington, Dan Marasco, Adrian Cursio and Lauren Bliem. The team at Vasko did a great job, again serving up some terrific finger food and wine and creating a convivial atmosphere for our younger alumni. David Dzanovski manages Vasko and is a member of the The Ridgeway Class of 1995 and has proven to be a wonderful supporter of the School and the OIGA in particular.

Adelaide Reunion The Principal, Gerard Foley and Director of Development, Astrida Cooper flew to Adelaide for a reunion lunch in May. Despite the wet conditions, a good time was had by all at the Public Schools Club. Past students from various corners of South Australia made the effort to attend with ages ranging from the Class of 1947 to the Class of 1980. The Principal shared current news about the School, as well the strategic vision, and Astrida updated the group on OIGA matters.

Georgia Newland (’12) Georgia Newland was lucky enough to be in Russia for the 2018 World Cup! Here is a recap of her experience below. ‘Attending a FIFA World Cup is something I never expected to do, and now I certainly have the bug.

Invited by Michael Edgley (’88) and the Green and Gold Army, we followed the Socceroos on their World Cup campaign around Russia. My role: to capture the atmosphere, passion, and love of football on the Green and Gold Army social media channels. Lucky for me, it was a very easy job, as we travelled for 3 weeks, meeting the most amazing fans from all over the world.

All three game days (France, Denmark, Peru) were like attending an AFL Grand Final - down to the sea of team colours, the adrenaline, and the incredible love and passion for the sport. But the AFL Grand Final doesn’t even compare to the amazing chanting at each game, from crowds of only 45,000 (Peruvians were a standout - drums, trumpets, singing... there was no holding back!).

France vs Australia was my first ever ‘soccer’ game, and it did not disappoint.

A FIFA World Cup should absolutely be on every sport-lover’s bucket list - the biggest, greatest sporting event in the world.’

Both Jack and Adam were fortunate recipients of a New Colombo Plan Commonwealth Scholarship for 2018.

This is awarded through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Awards were presented in Canberra by the Hon Julie Bishop MP. Jack is based at Tokyo University and is undertaking honours year research in the Bioengineering Department. He is investigating protein engineering and antibodies for potential cancer therapeutics. Adam’s program involves a semester of Japanese language study at Waseda University, also in Tokyo, as an exchange student. After this, Adam will intern at an international law firm focusing mostly in cross-border commercial dispute resolution.

Michael Saunders (’03) AFL umpire milestone! Michael Saunders reached his 200th boundary umpire milestone this season! This is the first time a Sydney based AFL umpire of any type has achieved this milestone.

Michael first started umpiring in the VAFA in 2004 to keep fit in between athletics seasons and umpired his first AFL game back in 2009. Well done Michael.

Geoff McColl (’78)

Jon Owen (’93) After 14 years as CEO at The Wayside Chapel, Rev Graham Long, wrote that our very own, Pastor Jon Owen (’93) a fearless, extraordinary and sometimes seemingly ‘crazy’ man – would take over as CEO and pastor of the Wayside from July this year. Started in 1964

by Reverend Ted Noffs, the Wayside Chapel is Australia’s best known provider of services for the homeless, the sad, the lonely, those suffering from addictions and mental illness – anyone who has fallen by the wayside of life.

Jon (’93) was appointed unanimously as the Wayside’s new CEO and pastor by the non for profits board after an international search that canvassed more than 100 candidates.

Professor Geoff McColl has recently been appointed the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Queensland. Geoff leads the Medical Faculty, which combines medical education with two research-intensive schools, three clinical medical schools and five hospital-based institutes and centres. Prior to Geoff’s appointment at University of Queensland, he was the Head of the Melbourne Medical School and Professor of Medical Education and training at the University of Melbourne, where he led the development and implementation of the new Melbourne MD. Geoff is also a member of the Therapeutic Goods Administration Advisory Committee on Medicines and also the Chair of the Australian Medical Council’s Medical School Assessment Committee. Geoff’s current research interests are related to the teaching and assessment of diagnostic reasoning skills in medical students, topics on which he completed a Master of Education in 2008

Our proud Old Ivanhoe kayaker, Kaylen Bassett, recently finished 4th in the Team Sprint category of the recent Wildwater World Championships held in Muotathal, Switzerland.

Tom trained as a Chartered Accountant after leaving Ivanhoe, but has been involved in sports and events management since 2006. Tom has risen to great heights in the tennis world and was appointed in September 2017 to the position of Chief Operating Officer at Tennis Australia. His previous roles include Director of Events and Facilities at Tennis Australia, and Chief Executive Officer at Tennis Queensland.

September 23 was a special day for Colin Rowse who celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends at the Victoria Rose Tearooms in Rosedale.

In deference to local fire restrictions candles on the cake were reduced to 10 and Colin had no trouble in extinguishing them in one fell swoop! May there be many more birthdays Colin!

Telescreen Class of 2014

Ryo Yoshida (’17)

A few alumni from the class of 2014 have been turning heads in the music industry recently! Matthew Martin, Nic Schwarz, Dan Carolan, and Ali Ward, four friends who graduated from The Ridgeway Campus in 2014 formed Telescreen an Indie Pop band which recently released their debut single Crowded. The single has been met with extremely positive reviews and reached #9 on Triple J unearthed top 100 charts.

Crowded is the first of two tracks from their upcoming 7 inch vinyl. These tracks were produced and recorded by highly renowned Australian producer Dean Tuza who has worked with artists such as The Rubens, Stella Donnelly, MOSSY and Moody Beach, just to name a few.

Ryo, who completed the International Baccalaureate at Ivanhoe in 2017, received an unconditional offer from the International Christian University, Tokyo Japan to study a Bachelor of Arts in Global Politics and International Relations (bilingual Eng/Jap). This course was Ryo’s first choice and she is extremely happy.

Benjamin Hunt (’89) During the two weeks of the Australian Tennis Open you may have noticed the new innovative court furniture that was on display. That was the masterpiece of the very clever old boy Benjamin Hunt! After graduating from Ivanhoe Grammar School Ben went on to complete a Bachelor of Industrial Design at RMIT and has been managing director/owner of Synergy Australasia, an exhibition and retail design and manufacturing company, for nearly 20 years. Ben’s most recent achievement is the amazing new court furniture at the 2018 Australian Open. A video was filmed by Tennis Australia as part of their promotional package which shows Ben and his team behind the scenes of their creations. The video can be seen online on our OIGA website at oldivanhoe.com under the have you heard section. Well done Ben!

The Australian Stock Brokers Awards is a large annual gathering of financial service practitioners where stockbrokers and their firms are recognised for their achievements over the past year. Supporting Ivanhoe Your generosity creates opportunities The spirit of our founder, The Reverend Sydney Buckley, lives on. In 1915 the School was founded on the basic principles of faithfulness, hence our motto ‘Faithful even Unto Death ‘ and the desire to educate young women and men to be of service to others no matter what their direction in life may be. Such was his enthusiasm for the venture that when the time came to move from the Hall at St James Church in Ivanhoe to our current location on The Ridgeway, many members of both the School and local community contributed financially enabling it to happen. Almost a century later the school family still gives generously, supporting and maintaining the fabric of the School and ensuring that the ideals and principles on which it was founded are being retained.

The granting of scholarships has always been important in the life of the School and the support for the program through Annual Appeal is most encouraging. There is many an Old Ivanhoe Grammarian who owes her or his success in life to receiving a scholarship to study at Ivanhoe and your gifts this year will ensure that the School continues to offer opportunity to those who need it most. Our libraries, buildings and grounds have all benefitted from your generosity and the School gratefully acknowledges the participation of those members of the school family who gave generously this year.

100 Years Old!

We are happy to acknowledge Gordon as the first Old Ivanhoe Grammarian we are aware of to reached the age of 100. His birthday was on 27 July this year and celebrated at the aged care home in Brighton where he currently resides.

Now in its thirtieth year the Ridgeway Club has had another enjoyable and fruitful year under the leadership of Grant Nichol with members enjoying a delightful lunch at Parliament House, a superb ‘Taste of the Orient ‘ at the Golden Dragon Palace, and an excellent end of year dinner at the restaurant of current parent Matteo Pignatelli. Members also journeyed to the RACV Resort at Cape Schanck for their annual weekend golf and dinner outing in October. Besides having all this fun and enjoying the company of the Principal and members of staff from time to time, funds raised by the Club this year have gone towards supporting the purchase of pianos for our Plenty Campus, the Theatre Department at The Ridgeway Camus and our new University Campus.

Gordon attended Ivanhoe between 1932 and 1934 together with his late twin brother Eric. Gordon maintained his links with the School regularly attending Buckley Boy’s reunions and making frequent visits throughout the years to see Geoff Brown and Astrida Cooper. His love for the School led him to become a bequest donor with the wish that his gift will go towards our Scholarship Program.

Fidelis Society Luncheon In appreciation for their commitment to Ivanhoe through remembering the School in their will, members of The Fidelis Society gathered to share lunch with the Principal in May. During the event, guests from far and wide were thanked sincerely for their commitment to the School while learning about the future plans and vision held for the School they love.

During lunch, Ian Wright (’72), son of Ken ‘Pug’ Wright was presented with his gold Fidelis pin, in recognition of his intended benefaction to the School. Ian joins more than 50 members of the Ivanhoe family whose bequests have benefitted the School or will one day in the future.

An afternoon tea in August, hosted by the Principal, was a great occasion for staff from across the School to come together in recognition of their contribution to the Staff Supported Scholarship. Introduced by the Principal in 2016, the Staff Supported Scholarship gives all staff, past and present, the opportunity to contribute towards a scholarship for a student who could not otherwise attend Ivanhoe Grammar School.

Donors were thanked by the Principal for their generosity and received an update on the inaugural Staff Supported Scholars’ progress. There is no doubt the student is making the most of this life-changing opportunity and staff left confident their contributions, when collectively combined with those of their colleagues, are making a powerful and wonderful contribution to the young student’s life.

Staff are welcome to join the Staff Supported Scholarship at any time.

Gifts of Appreciation Over the years the School has received gifts from families and individuals who have wanted to acknowledge those who have had a special place in their lives. Many of our Seats of Learning in the Middle Years Lecture Theatre have been given for that purpose.

Two recent donations have been received in such a manner.

An anonymous gift acknowledges the Love Family and the second, the gift of local residents Nigel Preston (’72) and his wife Freya Carkeek, is in appreciation for the work our Grounds and Maintenance staff do to make our surrounds, ovals and gardens so pleasing to the eye. With the Love Family’s commitment to sport over many years and Nigel and Freya’s specific gift to recognise outdoor staff, it was considered most appropriate that seats overlooking the redeveloped South Ground have plaques to honour our donors’ wishes.
