From the Principal

With the announcement of a new University Campus and the implementation of a new Strategic Plan, the past six months has been a time of development and growth at Ivanhoe Grammar School. In the Winter edition of Ivanhoe News, I mentioned the development of the Strategic Plan with a clear focus on learning and investing in staff. The Strategic Plan has now been ratified by the Board of Governors and can be found on our website under Publications.

With the new plan in place, Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities and the like continue to be critical components of the next phase of learning at Ivanhoe Grammar School.

However, a new set of learning fundamentals are equally important: Creative Thinking, Global Awareness, Digital Literacy, Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurial Capabilities and Innovation.

These new fundamentals will be progressively embedded in the curriculum in the coming years to support Ivanhoe Grammar School’s underpinning philosophy of developing ‘young women and men of character’.

As we all know through our own days in school, it is the teachers who make the biggest difference to learning both academically and personally. Hence, a key focus of our new Strategic Plan is continuing to grow the capacity of our teachers so that, in an open entry school, they can provide the best possible learning environment and outcomes for all Ivanhoe Grammar School students.

To this end, and continuing with the strategic theme to invest in learning and staff, a new curriculum and co-curricular structure will be introduced across the Secondary School at both the Plenty and Ivanhoe campuses in 2018.

The new structure is characterised by the following: • Four separate learning communities will be created on each campus and a Pedagogical Leader will be appointed to lead each of these communities:

»» Languages and Literature »» STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)

»» Humanities and Social Sciences »» The Arts • Faculty-specific Curriculum Leaders will remain in place and report to the relevant Pedagogical Leader • In support of our One School Philosophy, we have appointed Cross Campus Directors of Academic Learning and Co-Curricular Learning.

The changes in curriculum and co-curricular leadership structures across the School are an opportunity to elevate teaching and learning and to adopt a two tiered model focusing on both quality assurance and improved ways of teaching.

Furthermore, and as highlighted on page 18, the establishment of a new Year 9 University Campus is another exciting chapter in the life of the School. For the past ten years, our Year 9 program has given students out-of-classroom experiences which offer heightened learning opportunities that motivate and engage the developing brain and use it to its full potential. In this year-long hybrid university-secondary experience we will have the opportunity to embed our key values at a critical time in a young person’s development.

At the end of each school year we say farewell to a number of staff. I thank all of our staff for their continued professionalism, hard work, dedication and support of our students and I wish all retiring staff or those moving to another school all the very best in the next phase of their journey beyond Ivanhoe.

Congratulations Class of 2017 Nelson Mandela once said ‘There is no passion to be found playing small and settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living’.

The Class of 2017 has wholeheartedly embraced this message by taking full advantage of the many opportunities offered at the School in service, the arts, sport, academia, debating and the list goes on. They have done so with much energy, passion and support for each other, taking each new activity as an opportunity to grow into fine young women and men.

Stella Batsanis Head of University Campus

Carmel Fry Cross Campus Director of Academic Learning

With great pleasure we announce that Stella Batsanis will be the inaugural Head of Ivanhoe Grammar School’s new University Campus.

Carmel Fry will assume the role of Director of Academic Learning, which will commence in the 2018 academic year. Carmel, in her role as Head of Senior Years Curriculum at The Ridgeway Campus, has already been instrumental in shaping the direction of learning across the School, establishing templates for curriculum design, exploring ways to embed the key pillars of Round Square and establishing the key principles underpinning Ivanhoe teaching and learning. Carmel is looking forward to her new role, working closely with the newly appointed Heads of Learning across the School, including the newly established University Campus.

In her 12 years at the School, Stella has held the roles of Head of Middle Years and, more recently, Director of Wellbeing. As Head of Middle Years, Stella transformed our thinking, introducing new pastoral structures, the concepts underpinning Middle School pedagogy and shepherded in a new era of co-education. Stella is excited by the learning opportunities the new campus affords our students as we move our learning to an even higher level of critical thinking, global awareness and embedding all elements of the Ivanhoe Learner as part of a pre-senior program.

Kimberley Poynton Head of Human Resources Kimberley Poynton joins us from The University of Melbourne, where she held the role as Associate Director – Human Resources, Chancellery. In this role, she drove transformational change in developing people strategy, diversity and inclusion along with employee relations, compliance and recruitment and selection. Kimberley has a Bachelor of Arts and Law and worked with Corrs Chambers Westgarth prior to her role at The University of Melbourne. Kimberley brings with her a wealth of experience and is looking forward to aligning all elements of HR to both our Strategic Plan and all key functions of the School.

Chris Branigan Cross Campus Director of Co-Curricular Learning From the start of the 2018 academic year, Chris Branigan will assume the role of Cross Campus Director of Co-Curricular Learning. Chris has held many roles during his time at Ivanhoe, including Head of Sport and the Learning Leader of Physical Education. He brings a clear understanding of the importance of linking the Ivanhoe Learner to all aspects of our co-curricular program. Chris will join the Strategic Learning team and play a critical role in shaping the important learning that happens outside the classroom and embedding the key principles underpinning Round Square into all of our activities. Chris is looking forward to both the challenges and opportunities the role provides and expanding our current thinking in this area.

Q&A with Kellie Redmond We had the pleasure of interviewing Buckley House Prep teacher, Kellie Redmond, who has been leading sustainability initiatives in the classroom and beyond.

What is your personal motto on Early Childhood Education?

As a Prep teacher, I feel the utmost responsibility to ignite a love of learning in the children I teach. Every year my first goal is to shape a classroom where learning is exciting, challenging and celebrated, and where curiosity is encouraged. I do this by developing strong relationships with my students and by building an understanding of their interests and strengths. This helps me create and maintain a safe learning environment where children feel happy and safe to take risks. I am extremely passionate about education and believe that my enthusiasm for school has a positive influence on my students’ attitudes towards learning.

You are very passionate about teaching students about sustainability.

Tell me about your proudest sustainability achievement this year.

I am excited to be co-leading the Sustainability team this year. What really engages me is the evident value Ivanhoe Grammar School places on developing our students as global citizens and the engagement with various other associations with the same motivation.

The Sustainability team has been fortunate this year to work with our Global Citizenship Centre to plan and implement many initiatives.

I am most proud of the overall promotion of sustainability at Buckley House. Along with co-leader Megan Crewe, I drive maintainable initiatives that will grow and develop over time and leave a legacy of sustainability at Buckley House.

Our team has successfully developed and maintained a produce garden, used the proceeds from the sales to purchase a worm farm, and most recently introduced classroom composting to maintain the worm farm. These initiatives have allowed not only our Sustainability Leaders to be involved, but children from across the school. Local cafe, Mr Peebles, is also

What is your favourite thing about working at Buckley House?

How can I pick one?! This is my first year at Buckley House and after eight years at my previous school, I was naturally both excited and nervous about the transition. From my first day, I immediately felt welcome. Buckley House has a remarkably positive culture among staff, which I believe is evident throughout the school and I feel fortunate to be part of this. I also feel fortunate to be part of the Prep team where my partner Kym Leon and I aim to make learning fun and engaging for our students. I love that I am able to share in the excitement of a child’s first year of school and celebrate their successes with their families.

Can you tell me a funny story from your Prep classroom?

I have taught Prep for the last six years and have accumulated so many stories during this time. One day I may be able to publish memoirs of my experiences!

Some stories are not for sharing, but I just want to inform parents that nothing that happens at home is sacred. I have had many stories told to me by children about the shenanigans of family holidays or things I am sure their parents would rather me not know! Each story leaves me with a little smile thinking, ‘If only your Mummy knew you were telling me this!’ I get most of my laughs from the general day-to-day experiences. Prep children have such a great sense of humour. Just the other day two of my students decided to play a little trick on me and removed all my Richmond football cards from the wall.

They then replaced them with their teams.

The joy they got out of seeing me when I noticed was priceless! I also get a good chuckle from some of the phrases I hear myself say, for example, ‘Please don’t pick someone else’s nose!’ or ‘No if it has been in the bin best we don’t eat it!’ I never take for granted what I need to teach children, but sometimes I just don’t know how I do it with a straight face!

With 180 parents, staff and friends filling the Founders’ Centre, the Trivia Night was a fabulous evening with games, dancing, entertainment and prizes. Thanks must go to the Friends of Plenty Campus for sourcing amazing raffle items and decorating the venue, to Paul Walsh for acting as Quiz Master and to Dyson Group for sponsoring the event. We raised more than $14,000 which will be directed towards provision of a Maker Space for the library and a primary basketball half court.

It’s not often we get the chance to acknowledge someone who has coached a First XVIII team for 24 seasons, so it was a very special tribute that was paid to Roger Gill at a function hosted by the Principal on the evening of 9 August. Surrounded by current and past staff, past Captains of First XVIII teams and many alumni footballers, numerous funny stories and memories were shared.

It was clear to all that Roger has gone above and beyond as a coach, mentor and friend to hundreds of students over the years.

Senior students and parents took part in a seminar series and tertiary expo, held in the Middle Years Centre on 19 July.

Thirty Ivanhoe Grammar School alumni were selected to speak to students on their particular industry; university students or recent graduates spoke about the transition from Ivanhoe Grammar School to tertiary institutions, their university experience and aspirations for their future. More experienced alumni spoke about their post Year 12 pathway, the kind of work they currently do and the state of their specific industry.

Melbourne’s award winning tea house ‘Mary Eats Cake’ created a delicious high tea for more than 100 guests in the unique surrounds of the 3 Point Motors Mercedes-Benz showroom in Fairfield. Ambient music, individual gifts and a gourmet hamper donated by 3 Point added to the success of the afternoon, and we congratulate the Ladies’ Association on this event.

At the same time as the seminars were going on, we had 12 university and TAFE information booths available to guide students through the process of course selection. Based on the success of this activity, the Student Future Pathways Evening has become an annual event.

If a sign of a good workplace is how many staff notch up 10 years or more of continuous service, then Ivanhoe Grammar School is looking pretty good. We welcomed 130 current and past staff back to School, many of whom served for 20+ years in academic, administrative or grounds and maintenance roles. It was a lovely opportunity for old friends to catch up and for many past staff to see some of the physical changes at the Ivanhoe Campus.

Farm Vigano was once again the perfect venue for the Plenty Campus Spring Lunch held on 8 September. Parents and friends enjoyed the shared plate menu and beautiful surrounds, and were entertained by our wonderful student musicians – the 2019 Band, the DLMR Band and three primary singers who performed a selection from Seussical Jnr.

Daniel Proietto, Class of 1996 and the new Chairman of our Board of Governors, was pleased to see many of his former teachers. He gave us an update on several initiatives taking place across the School.

Friends of Buckley House Father’s Day Breakfast Friday 1 September On a cool but fine morning, Buckley House dads and students celebrated Father’s Day and were treated to a hot breakfast prepared by the Friends of Buckley House (FoBH) committee and their helpers. The School’s coffee cart, operated by a group of Year 10 students, proved very popular serving up an endless order of coffee and hot chocolates. The Friends of Buckley House raffle and stall raised in excess of $10,000 which will be directed towards a Buckley House project nominated by Head of Buckley House, Russell Feben.

Ivanhoe Grammar School Global Ambassadors with JUMP! Foundation’s Aditi and Ali

On Being Global Citizens A particular focus this year has been the launch of our Global Citizenship Centre and the appointment of our first student Global Ambassadors. Using the UN Global Goals as a starting point, students in Years 5 to 9 worked with the Global Citizenship Centre to reflect on what it means to be a global citizen, how we are all connected and what we can do to achieve these goals collectively.

This year I was selected to be the Global Ambassador for my class. I was proud and excited to be part of a team looking at the UN Global Goals and trying to find solutions.

During the year there were two days that all the Global Ambassadors got together and we all learned a lot more about the Global Goals. We worked together to set our own goals and planned an assembly to teach other students about the Global

The last few weeks of Term 3 introduced to me the concept of global citizenship. I really wasn’t sure what I could do to make a difference, however, participating in the classes really opened my eyes. I realised that my actions have connections and interdependencies on the rest of the world. I came to really appreciate that my choices can have wider repercussions for others locally, nationally and internationally.

The value of respect is an important aspect of being a good global citizen. Being fair and just can decrease harm to our planet. These are important lessons for us as students as it assists us in how we think about things, how we make decisions and how we solve problems. I strongly believe what we learn as Global Ambassadors will help us to succeed in 21st century life.

We first got together for training in May which was a really eyeopening experience, with hands-on activities that taught us more about global citizenship and the UN Global Goals. We met students from both campuses in Years 5 to 9 which was a fantastic way to make new friends and see global issues from a different perspective. One of the most interesting experiences was an activity where we had to create a diamond out of the Global Goals as a group, with goals we valued highest at the top and those we were less concerned about at the bottom. Everyone’s choices were really interesting to see, and as a team we had to work hard to figure out which goals we would prioritise. Another great experience was working with the JUMP! Foundation to plan the opening of the Global Citizenship Centre and activities for Global Citizenship Week. As a group we brainstormed ways of getting students involved in global citizenship.

Goals.

In Term 3, eight students travelled to Woodleigh Primary School for a conference on service. This was an amazing experience as we all learned about the many ways to show service. Sean Willmore spoke to us about what he does as the founder of the The Green Line Foundation. The most important part of the conference for me was when Sean said that service isn’t always giving something to someone but it could be as simple as just going to go visit someone.

International Day Against Homophobia

Think Before U Speak Posters

Wellbeing at Ivanhoe Ivanhoe Grammar School is pleased to welcome psychologists Kathy Li and Laura Punaro at the Ivanhoe Campus this year. Both have extensive backgrounds in school psychology and education and are members of the Australian Psychological Society.

Kathy and Laura will work with students and staff to help them get the best out of life at school. They will apply their psychological and educational expertise to support students to achieve academic success, psychological health, and social and emotional wellbeing. They are both looking forward to working proactively with students to assist them with learning, motivation, and study problems. Seeing a psychologist is an opportunity to talk about problems, ask questions, and get a new perspective on things without being judged. They will also help students identify strategies or ways that they can find a solution.

Student resilience and wellbeing are essential for both academic and social development. Confident, resilient people with a capacity for emotional intelligence perform better academically. Additionally, these skills can also contribute to the creation and maintenance of strong and healthy relationships and responsible lifestyles.

Think Before U Speak During Term 2 students and teachers at each campus promoted the Think Before U Speak Campaign, which aimed to raise awareness about the power of words and how what we choose to say affects others around us. This helps students and teachers to reconsider the effects of their words and be more inclusive.

Ultimately, the students’ goal was to reduce and prevent the use of anti-LGBTQI+, sexist, racist and disrespectful language in an effort to continue to enhance an inclusive, diverse and positive environment.

Anti-LGBTQI+ remarks such as ‘that’s so gay’ are often unintentional and a common part of teens’ vernacular. Most do not recognise the consequences, but the casual use of this language often carries over into more overt harassment and aggressive behaviour.

Students encouraged each other to replace the word gay with ‘odd’ or ‘strange’ or find another phrase to use.

Before entering a conversation, think about who will be a part of it. Know what words, phrases or actions could be deemed offensive by some participants. Keep focused on the conversation and if you feel the urge to say something that could be taken as being offensive, tell yourself immediately ‘Don’t say that!’

It starts with the way we think, then with the words we use!

The campaign sparked a student-led initiative to celebrate IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia) as a celebration of sexual and gender diversity. Year 12 students at Plenty Campus got into the spirit of the day with rainbow face paint and rainbow sprinkles. Having learned that 80 per cent of homophobic bullying happens at school, it was wonderful to see the students take on the message of inclusivity and diversity and to raise awareness of the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTQI+ people.

Performing Arts

The Ridgeway Campus Film The inaugural film project for The Ridgeway Campus marked the next exciting step in the growth of The Arts at Ivanhoe Grammar School. Written, cast, filmed and edited by students with a passion for the film medium, this comic mockumentary dramatised the development of dance in a rough-and-tumble high school where students develop their identities (and their tolerance) by expressing themselves through performance.

Mentored by Nick White and Scott Moorhen, the students took the learning process seriously and approached their various production roles with zeal and focus. It was clear to everyone that this is indeed a growth area.

Under the watchful eye of Artistic Director Demetri Spyropoulos, the settings for the film were familiar to the sellout audiences, but the cast members appeared in a guise never-before imagined.

Supported by FoRT (Friends of Ridgeway Theatre) the punters were treated to a great hour looking at the work, then hearing from members of the creative team in a Q&A format – all with a choc-top in one hand, and a bag of popcorn in the other!

Love Actually Monologues Rehearsals commenced in Term 3 at Plenty Campus every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon for five weeks. Students found the process highly enjoyable as they were not only challenging but each rehearsal furthered a connection with students from different levels. This co-curricular activity involved students from Year 9 to Year 12.

We were lucky to have a supportive backstage crew who took charge of programs, lighting, sound, backstage, costume, hair and makeup. A team of five girls and one boy, ranging from Years 9 to 12, were supported by talented and supportive parent-helper Charlie Sweeney, who sourced and altered costumes.

This wonderful project has been the catalyst for a short-film festival – the brainchild of Nick White – which The Ridgeway Campus would like to produce for 2018. Good things are definitely ahead, so watch this space!

The night went fantastically! Each dramatic item was performed with confidence and aplomb. It was delightful to witness the audience’s engagement and reactions as the evening progressed. ‘Love Actually’ was a tremendous experience for all involved and we are already planning what will be in store in 2018.

Seussical Jnr. The Plenty Campus Primary School production of ‘Seussical Junior’ was an incredible display of colour and talent. The cast, every student from Prep to Year 6, performed each number with enthusiasm and took the audience on a musical journey through comedic moments to heart-felt ballads of loss and loneliness.

The production was very well received. One audience member commented, ‘It was a fantastic show and I was totally amazed at how brilliant the students were.

They certainly deserve to be highly praised for their performances. The whole school performed extremely well which contributed to the overall success of the night.’

A huge thanks to all the admin staff, primary and secondary teachers who worked tirelessly to support the students.

Art and Design The Ridgeway Campus Years 7 to 11 Art and Design Show The Years 7 to 11 Art and Design show at The Ridgeway Campus was held in July. The exhibition was officially opened by Ms Grace Cooper (’14) alumna and fashion designer whose work explores materiality and the garment experience. One of her many achievements at Ivanhoe Grammar School was holding a Charity Ball to raise money for the Brotherhood of St Laurence. Grace recently won first place in the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in the RMIT Floral Fashion exhibit.

This year Julia Moorhen (Year 10) was the proud recipient of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association Encouragement Award in the Visual Arts. The award is now in its sixth year and was presented to Julia by Grace Cooper and Mr Darren Winjan (’89).

Darren is the past president of OIGA, a current council member and was responsible for initiating this prestigious award.

Alice Doyle (Year 11) received the inaugural Deans Art Award for her talents in both Studio Arts and Visual Communication Design.

Excellence and special recognition awards were also presented to numerous students from each of the Years 7 to 11 Art and Design classes. Congratulations to all who worked tirelessly in the weeks leading up to the event to ensure that the exhibition was a wonderful success.

The 2017 Graduate Art and Design Exhibition was a celebration of the creative talents of the graduating art and design students at The Ridgeway Campus. Studio spaces were filled with works of colour and vitality as guests joined students and staff at the official opening on Wednesday 11 October. The exhibition was opened by award-winning architect and alumnus Randal Marsh (’77). In his opening address, Randal Marsh discussed the importance of the Visual Arts and Design subjects within the school community and his fondness for the School was evident as he paid tribute to his time at Ivanhoe.

This year has seen a new art and design award established for our students through the generosity of Deans Art. The Deans Art Award was presented by Daniela Scaramuzzino. The diverse range of folio themes, innovative use of media and materials and a high standard of production of final works made it for this years art and design awards to be selected.

Plenty Campus Visual Art Exhibition The 21st Annual Plenty Campus Visual Arts Exhibition on Monday 16 October celebrated the creative talents of students from all secondary levels. Works on display were from the disciplines of Art, Studio Art, Product Design and Technology, Media and Visual Communication Design. We were fortunate enough to have the exhibition opened by local artist Michelle Bolmat. The opening evening concluded with the screening of films produced by Media students.

One of the highlights of the exhibition opening was the presentation of first place and runner up of The Randal Marsh Art and Design Award, the Acquisition Award and the Centenary Product Design and Technology Award.

This year, Year 11 student Ella Primerano (Year 12 Visual Communication Design) was awarded First Prize of the Randal Marsh Art and Design Award for her design of VIP entertainment and accommodation spaces, logo and promotional poster for a music festival, Glass Half Full.

Runner Up was awarded to Andy Qi (Year 12 Visual Communication Design) for his design of an amphibious vehicle, logo and promotional poster.

The Acquisition Award went to Jess Grant (Year 12 Studio Art) for one of her illustrations in a series of six that explores the bond between animals and humans.

Now in its third year, the Centenary Product Design and Technology Award went to Year 11 student, Zoe Lau (Year 12 Product Design and Technology) for her hall table.

The Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association presented an encouragement award in the Visual Arts. This year the award went to Tom McLeod in Year 10.

It’s a courageous effort to put work on display for public view and what we see is the end result of a creative process. The annual exhibition is a wonderful celebration of this and we congratulate all students on their efforts.

Buckley House Artist in Residence We have been very fortunate to have welcomed Elizabeth Armstrong as our Artist in Residence in a Buckley House program organised by Sofia Tsoliakis. Elizabeth is a feltmaker and textile artist running Studiofelter where she teaches workshops in Patchwork Felting. During her residence at Ivanhoe Grammar School, Elizabeth ran student and staff classes in the colourful art of felting and patchwork. After her residence in May, Elizabeth returned for our Art Open Week in August, where students were taught how to make felt animals and birds.

University Campus

In an Australian first, Ivanhoe Grammar School is proud to announce the launch of our new University Campus. In partnership with La Trobe University, the campus will form the basis for a new Year 9 Program starting in the 2019 academic year, that will offer students a year-long university experience.

For the past ten years, a Year 9 Program has been in place at Ivanhoe Grammar School featuring learning experiences that go beyond the classroom. From 2019 we will take this program a step further by re-imagining the classroom altogether at our new University Campus.

Research by the Department of Education and Training pin-points Year 9 as a particularly pivotal year in a young person’s school life, and the one where disengagement and dissatisfaction peaks. Some of the most profound physical, social, emotional and intellectual changes take place during this stage of adolescence. It is a period of increased independence, curiosity and selfawareness that is often characterised by rebellious or boundary-pushing behaviour. While this may appear on the surface to be a challenge to teachers and caregivers, this year marks a crucial passage of maturity, as the exploration of 18 | Ivanhoe News Magazine

adult experiences act as a rehearsal for impending adulthood.

Ivanhoe Grammar School recognises the unique challenges faced by Year 9 students, but also the heightened learning opportunities that can arise from such a spike in curiosity and hunger for independent learning.

Our long-standing Year 9 Program was designed to allow students in this key developmental stage the opportunity to explore the adult world in a safe and supportive environment. Out-of-classroom learning experiences motivate students and engage the developing brain in ways that promote long-standing critical thinking habits. Principal Gerard Foley calls the Year 9 Program an opportunity to ‘embed our key values at a critical time in a young person’s development.’

Initially designed as a two week intensive science program, the La Trobe University segment of the Year 9 Program has been

so successful that it has evolved from once a year, to three times a year to its most recent evolution in the form of a dedicated University Campus for Year 9 students. This final step is an Australianfirst that will provide students with a hybrid university-school experience, and one we hope will inspire a life-long relationship with inquiry-based learning.

By giving Year 9 students an early taste of university learning, we seek to challenge, inspire and prepare them for the next stage of life. By implementing this as a year-long learning experience at a dedicated university campus, Mr Foley believes our school is leading the way.

‘We understand just how important it is to give our Year 9 students the opportunity to grow and become independent learners,’ Mr Foley said. ‘Spending a year at our new University Campus will provide our Year 9s with new and exciting learning opportunities.’

Over the course of the year, they will be exposed to the kind of big ideas you would expect to find in a university environment.

They will interact with researchers and academics, attend lecture presentations and develop skills that they will be able to apply to real-life situations.

Providing students with the opportunity to explore university subjects at such a significant time in their development has enormous benefits. While the academic advantage is obvious, it will also increase their cultural understanding, help them to become global citizens and prepare them for their senior school years and adult life.

- PRINCIPAL GERARD FOLEY While based at a separate, purpose-built facility, students will have access to other facilities at La Trobe University – including scientific laboratories, finance trading room, a moot court and our Wildlife Sanctuary. La Trobe academics will contribute to students’ studies through the previously established and very successful joint educational program. Students will have the opportunity to reach out to leading academics in their field of interest and pursue lines of study and questioning previously unavailable to them.

The project to build the new Ivanhoe Grammar School University Campus is currently underway at two terrace buildings owned by and adjacent to La Trobe University in nearby Macleod.

The beautiful heritage terraces will be renovated into open, modern learning spaces, making them an inspiring place to learn, explore and question.

The School has appointed experienced educational leader Mrs Stella Batsanis to the role of Head of Campus, leading a team of 20 school staff. Formerly the Head of Middle Years and currently the School’s Wellbeing Director, Mrs Batsanis brings a breadth of knowledge to the position and is excited about her inaugural role as the head of a unique campus.

Careful planning has gone into all aspects of this initiative. Parents, students and the local community have been consulted and the new campus has the backing of Darebin City Council. Though the student experience will be an exciting one of intellectual exploration, student safety is paramount; while on campus and using La Trobe facilities, students will be supervised by an Ivanhoe Grammar School staff member at all times.

‘At the new University Campus, students will experience authentic experiential learning of a rich, varied and rigorous curriculum,’ Mrs Batsanis said.

With access to university academics and subjects, community and international service programs and continued out-ofclassroom activities, full advantage will be taken of this pivotal year; preparing ripe and curious minds for a lifetime of learning.

Sport News AGSV Girls’ Athletics Team Back-to-back Premiers!

Winners at the AGSV Athletics Championships

In a repeat of last year, our Girls’ Athletics Team comfortably won the AGSV Premiership by a whopping 55 points – the exact margin of their win in 2016!

And although the boys couldn’t match this success, their efforts were commendable against the three large boys’ schools (Trinity, Marcellin and Camberwell) who have dominated this event in recent years.

There were a number of students who recorded personal bests and beat both School and AGSV records in the process.

Boys’ Grand Final Trifecta For the first time in AGSV history, Ivanhoe Grammar School achieved a Grand Final Trifecta! Our Boys’ Football, Hockey and Soccer teams all made it to their respective Grand Finals. And while each team played valiantly, the ultimate prize on the day alluded them.

In Football, the team got within eight points in the last quarter but could not sustain the effort and eventually went down by 26 points. Although not quite the finish that Roger Gill would have liked in his last game as coach, he would have been delighted with the overall performance of the boys throughout the season.

In both Hockey and Soccer, the boys played superbly to finish tied at the end of full time in their respective Grand Finals.

However, in the event of a draw, under the rules of the AGSV, the team that finishes on top of the ladder at the end of the Home and Away season is crowned the winner, and unfortunately, Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School did that!

In the APS competition, our Soccer girls finished in the top four and gave themselves a chance at a Premiership during the final rounds when the top teams play each other again. Unfortunately, the APS schools just proved to be a little stronger and we had to be content with 4th place overall.

After a disappointing start to the season, our Netball girls stormed home with 6 wins in their last 7 matches. However, the early losses meant we were too far back on the ladder to catchup with the leading teams.

Aerobics Championships On Friday 4 August, Ivanhoe Grammar School won the Victorian AeroSchools Primary School Championships!

Taking out the number one position out of 130 schools, the Buckley House squad was made up of 27 students from Years 3 to 6. They went into the competition as underdogs and faced up to some very strong competition. Training hard since February, the win may be unexpected but it was definitely well-deserved. The team behaved beautifully at the competition and supported one another on what was a very long and gruelling day.

The day before, 32 senior students from The Ridgeway Campus also competed in the AeroSchools Championship at Secondary School level and while they took home plenty of medals, the top prize eluded them. What makes the Ivanhoe Grammar School Aerobics program so special is that many students come back to coach the juniors when they reach secondary school and so a win for Buckley House is a win for everyone. The program has also been a great avenue for female role-modelling and leadership, proven once again on the weekend with the mutual respect demonstrated between the junior and senior competitors.

Co-curricular and Service Ivanhoe Presents... a student interview with Bill Shorten Persistence paid off when brothers Matthew (Year 12) and Chris (Year 11) Jones scored an interview with Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten for Ivanhoe Grammar School’s community radio station.

The students secured a phone interview for the School’s Inner FM channel, which airs Ivanhoe Presents on 96.5FM from 4-5pm on Fridays. The show focuses on school events and current affairs.

Until now, its highest profile guest was the School Principal.

40 Hour Famine This year’s students raised $5,000 for World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine which is an outstanding achievement by all involved. All funds raised go towards assisting displaced persons fleeing conflict in areas like Syria, Afghanistan and Iran. More importantly, these students developed themselves into global citizens, striving for tolerance and holding no judgement.

Young Ambassador Program Year 10 IDEALS students participated in Scope’s ‘Young Ambassador’ program, where they learnt about disabilities.

Students heard real-life stories, gained confidence and life-long skills, and more importantly, developed empathy and understanding of individuals with disabilities in the wider community.

AFL Umpiring Development Coaching Affiliated with the AFL, this program provides experienced coaches to students for training sessions. All students who participate in this program are developing their decision-making and conflict resolution skills. It has been a very successful co-curricular activity for many years. Neville Nash who is an experienced AFL umpire has been affiliated with the School for over 8 years in setting up and implementing the Certificate Course in Umpiring.

Proving that it’s never too early to be bold, they initially reached out to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull for an interview. When Mr Turnbull was unavailable, they weren’t deterred and went straight to the Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, who agreed to be interviewed for their radio program. After spending several months organising a suitable time, Chris was surprised when Mr Shorten answered the phone without a minder to discuss why he entered politics, who he admires, career frustrations and advice for aspiring politicians.

It was a far cry from their usual topics but Mr Shorten was very responsive and Chris says he learned a lot from the experience.

‘Doing the radio show is helping us to develop leadership skills because we’re representing the School in the community,’ he says.

Unsurprisingly, both aspire to careers in the public service.

Throughout the year, the brothers have been fronting Ivanhoe Presents fortnightly, alternating with fellow students Nick Callcott, Jack Welham, Walter Jones, Antony Willison and Oscar McIntyre.

Inner FM started 30 years ago to serve Ivanhoe and surrounding suburbs. The School’s Head of Co-Curricular Activities, Con Zois, runs Ivanhoe Presents and says it allows students to publicly discuss school issues, analyse current affairs, read poetry and promote charity and sporting events. ‘It’s been a great opportunity for students,’ Con says. ‘It gets them involved.

It’s expressing themselves. It’s about connecting with your community.’

The Bill Shorten interview aired on Friday 22 September in the 4-5pm timeslot. Matthew and Chris have contacted Mr Turnbull to offer him a second chance.

Students at all year levels are encouraged to explore interests outside the classroom through participation in Leadership, Service and Community Activities. The co-curricular program complements and balances the curriculum by encouraging participation and teamwork while building confidence and responsibility. Participating in co-curricular activities is an excellent opportunity for students to build skills and friendships.

300 Blankets Outreach Program As another long cold winter comes to end, we briefly take a moment to reflect on Ivanhoe’s ongoing partnership with the charity organisation 300 Blankets in 2017.

Through the coordination efforts of Con Zois and Elise Dunstan (’01), students and parents of students (past and present) and current staff have put up their hands to volunteer their time to participate in eight 300 Blankets Outreach nights throughout the year. Additionally, some of our Year 10 and 11 students have joined 300 Blankets and the Brotherhood of St. Laurence on Outreach nights as part of their Urban Camp.

Despite some very cold, wet and windy nights, these volunteers have decided to spend two hours of their day engaging with people experiencing homelessness in Melbourne’s CBD. This engagement ranges from conversation and emotional support to providing material goods, including blankets and toiletries. The groups meet at Flinders Street station and then proceed up Swanston Street and return to Flinders Street via Latrobe and Elizabeth Streets.

In completing this trek, these volunteers have extended the hand of friendship to people in our community who need it most and, in the process, establish that we are all members of the same community.

The school’s support of 300 Blankets and the Outreach Program continues to bring smiles to the faces of people who are doing it tough and it provides an invaluable contribution to our local community. Equally, those who volunteer gain awareness and understanding of the realities of homelessness and have had the opportunity to re-evaluate any preconceptions of the actuality of those whose experiences homelessness and the daily challenges before them.

Without compassionate and eager volunteers, the 300 Blankets Outreach program would not be able to provide emotional and physical warmth to those most in need in our community.

International Trips

Cambodia Service Project Students in Years 10 and 11 travelled to Cambodia in June as part of the School’s Round Square Cambodia Service Project.

An annual co-curricular project, the trip gives students the opportunity to serve local communities while learning about Cambodian culture and the hardships its people have faced.

Two students who returned with renewed perspective were Liam Jensen and Juliet Garro, whose reflections on their time in Cambodia illustrate the potency of service trips, and the profound effect they can have on a young person’s life.

The Cambodia Service Project Trip has always been something I wanted to be involved with. I knew the trip would be a great opportunity to learn more about myself, while experiencing the culture and lifestyle of Cambodian people.

For me, the most rewarding part of the trip would have to be the

Everything we did in the village allowed us to better the experience on the trip. This organisation works to get kids off the lives of those living there. The experience changed my perception of happiness. It taught I think that I have changed as a person after being a part of the me to take a step back from what we consider the ‘pressure’ of our Cambodia Service Project Trip. It taught me a lot about myself and busy school lives, to put things into perspective and realise how the world we live in. It sounds like a cliche, but it opened my eyes lucky we really are. My time in Cambodia inspired me to share to the way other people live and helped me understand how lucky I my experiences with other people, and to continue to help those communities in any way I can from home soil. am. Small things I used to take for granted, I really appreciate now.

NASA Trip During the mid-semester break, 59 students in Years 7 to 9 attended the HASSE Junior Space School, organised and led by iVicon Australia.

The students spent the first week at Space Centre in Houston, Texas. While in Houston, the students took a tour of Rice University, where JFK gave his famous moon speech in September 1962, and visited the Baker institute where many US and foreign dignitaries have visited and used the facilities to create US foreign policy. Other highlights included a Major League Baseball Game, a shark dissection at A&M University, a forensics crime scene investigation at Texas Medical Education Centre and a visit to the Johnson Space Centre where students engaged in astronaut discussions, a guided tram tour and even visited Mission Control.

The second week was spent in Huntsville Alabama at the US Space and Rocket Centre. Here, students got a real taste of what it would be like as an astronaut. They were put through some aspects of astronaut training, such as experiencing what gravity would be like on the moon in the 1/6th gravity moon chair and the Multi-Axis Trainer.

Students also completed various space missions, simulating rocket launches and sending a manned shuttle to the International Space Station. They also have the opportunity to hear motivating presentations from NASA astronauts and engineers.

The learning outcomes of the trip were many. Particularly the application of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the context of space missions, was eyeopening. They also had a chance to develop critical thinking, problem solving and collaborative skills and were inspired to reflect on personal values and pursue goals.

OIGA News From the OIGA President Our reunion program has been in full swing since July and, as you will see by the reports in this edition, they have been held interstate, intrastate, back at School, and at several local venues owned and operated by alumni. It is always great to see the friendships and fellowship that being an Old Ivanhoe Grammarian engenders at these events and long may they continue!

Since 1 July we have been without Elise Dunstan (’01) who had worked for the past four and a half years as Alumni Co-Ordinator.

Her zest and enthusiasm for all things Ivanhoe is being sadly missed, but we wish her well as she embarks on another exciting stage in her life, establishing connections for alumni in the State high school system. Elise remains on Council and is still active on our social media sites.

Facebook, LinkedIn, the Old Ivanhoe Law Society and our sporting teams are all providing avenues for remaining in contact with one another and I recommend them to you. Details can be found on our website at oldIvanhoe.com.

OIGA News Under 19s take the flag!

Congratulations to our OIGFC U19 team who won the Section 3 Grand Final against Old Haileybury on Sunday 17 September at Box Hill City Oval. The two teams had already met in the final series with Ivanhoe winning a thrilling 8 point extra time semifinal two weeks earlier. Both sides knew they were in for an electrifying, do or die, Grand Final!

Old Haileybury started the game fast with nerves getting the better of Ivanhoe and they trailed 6 to 17 at quarter time. But Ivanhoe managed to compose themselves and were ahead 45 to 32 at half time. An inspirational half time address from Coach Jordan Stanton (’13) saw them burst away in the third quarter to lead 75 to 38 at the last change.

The exhilarating play of Ivanhoe continued into the fourth quarter with standout performances by captain Max Jones (’16) who kicked four goals and Seamus Gibbs (’15) who won Best on Ground. When the final siren sounded, Ivanhoe had taken out the Premiership convincingly: 16.5-101 to 6.11-47.

An inspiring lunch at Chelsworth Park At the final home game of the 2017 season, Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Football Club (OIGFC) welcomed former Essendon great and Melbourne coach, Neale Daniher, to Chelsworth Park.

Daniher was the guest speaker in front of over 120 guests, most of whom said it was a memorable day. Guests included Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Principal Gerard Foley, former Essendon players including past parent Ken Fraser, and OIGFC Senior and Under 19 players.

In 2014, Daniher revealed he was battling motor neurone disease and has since become the face of the Fight MND campaign, delivering an inspiring message and helping to raise over $25m for research into the disease. The lunch was a spectacular success, with the club raising over $20,000 for the Fight MND campaign.

Daniher delivered some very powerful messages to a very engaged audience.

‘We all get dealt many hands of cards in our life, some are good and some are not so good. I know that I’ve been dealt a great hand and we all have in a sense.

Living in Australia and the opportunities we get, we’ve already won the lottery’.

Daniher also spoke about the reality that we all have to face adversity at some time: ‘Life doesn’t promise to be fair but it gives you opportunity. It is up to you to fill the pages of your life with what you do with those opportunities’.

Daniher’s incredibly positive attitude and good humour had a huge impact and proved to be inspirational for the players, with both the Senior and Under 19 teams having important wins on the day. The seniors upset Old Geelong to retain a chance of playing finals; while the Under 19s topped the ladder to secure a home

final at Chelsworth Park, which they went on to win convincingly (read the full story story above).

The 2018 year promises to be a huge season for OIGFC with the seniors seeking the ultimate success in Premier C, another group of Year 12 boys from the school arriving and adding to the Under 19s team and the exciting introduction of a new women’s team. Paralympian and sports mentor, Sam broke the 100m Butterfly world record at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games at the age of 16. In 2009 Sam was awarded the Order of Australia Medal.

Dr Rebecca Silvashields (’00) Rebecca Silvashields (nee Sheilds) had a year off for travel after high school before studying a Bachelor of Medicine/ Bachelor of Surgery at Monash University and is now in her fifth year of Obstetrics and Gynaecology training.

Ken Pemberton (’57) Bequest donors Ken and Sandy Pemberton were in town recently and presented the School with three volumes of ‘Australasia Illustrated’ printed in 1892. They provide a fascinating account of the early colonisation of Australia and New Zealand. As Ken said, ‘Sandy and I do not have any children and we hope ‘our family’ at Ivanhoe Grammar School may gain a perspective of what life was like in Australia well over a century ago.’

Since graduating Rebecca has worked in many different areas of medicine, but she finds the most rewarding aspect of her job the support she can give to patients on both spectrums of life; helping terminally ill patients to die with dignity and helping pregnant women have a safe and rewarding birth.

Rebecca would like to set up a group obstetrics and gynaecology practice in Melbourne. The hours are long, and there have been many difficult times, but she has never regretted choosing this career.

Shae Wissell (’97) Shae is a doctoral candidate and the founder and host of Dear Dyslexic; an online forum and podcast discussing topics relating to dyslexia and learning difficulties.

Shae trained as a Speech Pathologist before completing a Master’s Degree in Public Health and Health Administration.

Through her work and her own experience with dyslexia, Shae has developed a passion for supporting people with learning difficulties, particularly young people trying to finish school.

School can be a struggle for people with dyslexia, as it was for Shae, but she feels privileged for her time at school and the supportive network of friends she made.

‘My time at school showed me that if you work hard you can be what you want to be, we all just have different ways of getting there.’

John Dermer (’67) In November John, a member of the Gallery of Achievement, held his 40th Annual pottery exhibition in Yackandandah.

This coincided with his 50th year as a full time potter. John made his first pots when he studied art under Denis Dwyer in Year 11 in 1966.

John Dermer is a world renowned Australian potter, follower of the Leach Hamada movement and accomplished in the difficult process of salt glaze firing of porcelain.

Andreana Reale (’02) Andreana is a writer who manages fundraising for Urban Seed; a local community development organisation working out of a Collins Street Baptist Church. Urban Seed walks alongside people experiencing homelessness and other marginalisation.

James Minas (’03) James is a composer and co-founder of music production company Kudu Sounds, most recently writing original music for a range of projects including TV commercials, documentaries, short films, fashion shows, film festivals and live theatre.

Fede Frew (’14) After graduating in 2014, Fede was awarded a scholarship to play soccer at The American International College in Massachusetts, USA. She was so grateful to have the opportunity to live her passion while studying. Through brutal pre-season training, early morning classes and the intense American short soccer season, she says she has learnt so much about herself and has relished it all.

Eilish Gilligan (’11) Graduating in 2011, Eilish went on to study at the Victorian College of the Arts where she and her classmates formed the indie band ‘Frida’. Her more recent solo music can be found on Triple J Unearthed.

Many members of the School community will remember Anne as a very talented singer and performer in Plenty Campus productions and School concerts. Anne is back in the limelight through her own production company, Something Blue Productions, providing an outlet for her own talents and for other young Melbourne-based performers.

Martin Baumber (’77) Martin and wife Sue Baumber recently attended the 40 year reunion at the School. Martin has been a dairy farmer on the family farm in Dhurringile near Tatura since completing his schooling. After 35 years of milking predominantly Friesian/ Holstein cows, Martin and Sue recently sold the dairy portion of their farm to a local neighbour.

Chris Kamen (’01) Chris Kamen is an independent filmmaker and newly hatched film and TV lawyer at Melbourne firm Shiff & Co. His latest project was a documentary about the tiny house movement: smallisbeautifulmovie.com

The milk is sent to Tatura Milk (now Bega Cheese) and processed into various dairy products. Approximately 85 per cent of products are exported to Japan, South-East Asia, the Middle East, and more recently, China.

As well as running the farm, Martin and Sue have been involved in establishing Landcare locally, been a part of various farming discussion groups and industry associations, as well local School Councils. More recently, Martin assisted in developing the Dhurringile Community Plan.

John Duncan (’60) John is involved with several worthy projects in India, one with a friend in Jodhpur involving the construction of in-ground concrete water tanks for use by individual families. The water for the tanks is captured from the monsoon rains or purchased from government water tankers. In the past few years, John has been involved in the construction of six such tanks to benefit the lives of Indian families in the Rajasthan desert regions.

Through such projects, and getting to know the families, John is also able to follow the educational progress of the family’s children and encourage them to stay at school and hopefully continue to tertiary studies through funding their education.

John is well aware of the value of an education, especially in developing countries, and has encouraged and funded several students with tertiary studies in Indonesia where he has spent many happy holidays.

Reunions 40 Year Reunion Around 30 members of the Class of 1977 gathered back at the School for their 40 Year reunion in August. It was a great mix with several being among the last of our boarders to come to Ivanhoe before the Boarding House closed in 1978. Wayne Motton shared some humorous memories of the year and Principal Gerard Foley spoke of his vision for the School in response. Thanks to all who travelled considerable distances to be there, including Owen Self and Matthew Stevenson who came down from Brisbane.

30 Year Reunion Following in his brother’s footsteps, Carlo De Bortoli, School Captain 1987, summoned members of his class group to their 30 year reunion in August. Paul Slocombe jetted in from Perth for the occasion and we thank past staffer, Ron Smith, for his attendance.

It was great to see that many who attended were current or future parents of the School thus creating family links far into the future.

Rumour has it that, at a nearby establishment, the reminiscences went long into the night and early morning, testimony to the fact that 1987 was a very good year indeed!

Mornington Reunion Early September saw past students and partners gather in Mornington to meet with Principal Gerard Foley and talk about the past, present and future of the School. It was great to see John Leaver AO (’48) and his wife Wendy, Barry (’50) and Rosemarie Stynes, Bill (’48) and Val King, Jeff (’54) and Susan Peck, John Crump (’61) and Ian (’62) and Mary Marshall. Also in attendance was the 1957 School Captain Allan Pizzey and his wife Ann who was the School Captain at Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School. Such a good time was had that they are going to do it again next year!

Country Visits The passage of time in many cases has meant that past students have reached a time in their life when they can no longer make the journey to Ivanhoe as often as they wish. As a consequence, Director of Development, Astrida Cooper and Geoff Brown (’62), EO of the OIGA, have been visiting past students in various parts of the state. Recently, pleasant times have been spent with John (’59) and Fay Forbes at Mitiamo, John Dewhurst (’49) and John (’54) and Helen Emery in Ballarat, Graham Dawson (’50) at Bacchus Marsh and Colin Rowse (’46) and Phillis Heslin OAM at Moe.

Canberra Reunion Two gatherings were held in Canberra this year with an afternoon tea for our older alumni at Poppy’s Café and an evening function for the ‘workers’ at the Parlour Room Wine Bar. At afternoon tea it was great to have two of our oldest old boys in Gunnie Waddell (’37) and Ian Buckley (’42), nephew of our Founder, Sydney Buckley. They were joined by David Cronin (’61) and wife Libby, Byron Sullivan (’62), together with Principal Gerard Foley, Astrida Cooper and Geoff Brown (’62). Lots of conversation about the School and some direct questions to the Principal saw afternoon tea go to nearly 5pm.

All enjoyed the opportunity to meet with Mr Foley and catch up on what is happening at Ivanhoe in a very pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.

The Ridgeway Campus 5 Year Reunion Alumni establishment, Moon Dog Brewery, was the location for the The Ridgeway Campus 5 Year Reunion. Reports of it being a great venue have flooded back from many of the 70 who attended and there is no doubt that a good time was had by all. To add to the alumni flavour, food on the night was served by Mr Burger and thanks go to Scott Assender (’90) for arranging at short notice.

Staying Connected In 1960, a group of current Ivanhoe students began to meet at the home of one of the boys on Friday and Saturday evenings primarily to play cards or to push off to the local dances held on Saturday night. These were ‘not to be missed’ occasions. On obtaining of motor vehicle licences, this progressed to taking a site at the Torquay Caravan Park where a prefab building was erected just prior to Christmas each year and dismantled at Easter time. In the interim people came and went over the summer break as work and study would allow.

Time passed and each went their separate ways, only occasionally making contact until 2010, 50 years later, when all decided it was time to meet up again. Since then an annual lunch has taken place in February, with people travelling from Sydney and Canberra to be at the event. Several of the locals meet on a

more regular basis, continuing that close association and bond that the School gave them so many years ago. The conversation is never stilted as current events are discussed and yesterday’s memories recounted.

We know that there are many groups out there that meet regularly.

For many years mates from the School of the early 1940s met at the MCC for lunch. Ron Blaskett (’63) organises an early to mid 1960s gathering, David Lester (’59) brings together a late 50s group and George Haros (’91) has his ‘the tie is thicker than blood’ boys who meet annually. The OIGA is turning 100 – do you have a story to tell?

On 28 February 1920, a group of past students met to formalise the birth of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians’ Association, appointing John Benson, Class of 1916, as its first President.

John became the longest serving master of the School retiring in 1966 after 47 years with the School.

In 2020, the OIGA will be celebrating its 100th birthday and to recognise this milestone it has been suggested that an anecdotal history recounting school life from a students’ perspective, should be chronicled.

Whether you were at School in 1940 or 2010 we would like to hear your story and if suitable prepare it for publication in 2020. If you have photographs to accompany your story all the better but it is certainly not a pre-requisite.

2017 Impact of Giving Report

Supporting Ivanhoe The Love of Music Continues The redevelopment of Locksley, now known as ArtsEdge at Locksley, included the addition of a number of music studios for tuition and rehearsal. Over the course of the last few years, several of these rooms have been named by families, including the most recent one, the McColl Family Studio.

The McColl family name is well known at Ivanhoe with brothers Don (’74), Geoff (’78) and Doug (’81) all contributing to the music life at School through various school orchestras and cadet bands.

Both Geoff and Doug were Captains of Music in their final year at Ivanhoe with both continuing their love of music professionally, whilst studying medicine.

The next generation of McColl’s at Ivanhoe have also contributed significantly to the music program with Don’s children Nicholas (’06) and Stephanie (’13) being members of various Ivanhoe orchestras as well as Vice-Captain and Captain of Music in their respective years. Both Nick and Steph continue to enjoy the beauty of music by playing in the Heidelberg Wind Ensemble.

at Ivanhoe over many years as well as enjoying performing as a violinist and pianist over the years.

The love of music in the McColl family can be attributed to Don, Geoff and Doug’s mother June who learnt piano at Fintona during the 1940s. As well as being a qualified kindergarten teacher, June subsequently qualified as a piano teacher and taught from home for more than 30 years. Among her many pupils were her own grandchildren.

With such a strong link to music through three generations, the McColl family felt that it was appropriate to recognise the family name at Locksley. Don quipped, ‘The McColl Family Studio gives a legacy of which Mum in particular is so proud, given her lifelong interest in music, teaching, and education at Ivanhoe’.

Wanless Family Aviation Scholarship Lim family outside the Chapel of the Holy Trinity

Lim Family Benefactor Honoured A bequest from their great aunt Marry Lim enabled brothers Johnathan (’08) and Nick (’10) and their mother Chye Hong Ow to honour her through the naming of a Chapel Pew in the Chapel of the Holy Trinity at The Ridgeway Campus.

Marry Lim (Lim Chye Ai) studied Literature at the University of New South Wales, later becoming the Vice-Principal of Taylor’s College in Malaysia. Marry was also an examiner for Cambridge testing in English.

The wording on the plaque celebrates her contribution to education: ‘We dedicate this memento in remembrance of a loving Grand-Aunt and beloved teacher who strove for the betterment of her students and those around her’.

The Lim Family Pew was dedicated at the Christmas Carol Service in December.

In the last edition of Ivanhoe News, the Wanless Family Aviation Scholarship was announced and, following the interview and flight evaluation process, Cooper Simmons, a current Year 10 student at Plenty Campus, was selected as the inaugural recipient of the scholarship. Cooper is an Air Force Cadet and has had a passionate interest in aviation for many years. Cooper began his flight training last year and hopes to become a pilot.

Cooper’s father, a Qantas pilot, thanked the Wanless Family for creating this opportunity for school aged students: ‘Aviation is an extremely rewarding career and there is already a shortage of pilots within Australia. It’s fantastic that somebody will be helped in achieving an aviation career through your generosity. Also, thank you for taking Cooper on a training flight as part of the selection process. He was ecstatic about the whole experience that you provided him with.’

From one of our current parent donors: ‘When we received the annual letter seeking gifts and donations for the school, we were in a unique position to support the school that has provided an environment in which our son has flourished. Darkly Lab’s (our company) philosophy is to make previously out-of-reach technology available to everyone and what better way of achieving this than donating an Emblaser 2, a laser cutting and engraving machine, to the Plenty Campus Makerspace.

On behalf of Ivanhoe Grammar School and the students we serve, thank you for sharing in our fundraising vision this year and for your philanthropic support. The reasons for supporting Ivanhoe are as varied as the individuals who make up our Ivanhoe community, but the end result is the same – a stronger Ivanhoe Grammar School for our current and future students.

I am pleased to report that our Annual Appeal 2017 targets have been achieved and very soon our students’ learning experiences will be enhanced through the introduction of new technology at both the Plenty Campus and The Ridgeway Campus while for our younger students in Buckley House, a friendship corner will be a welcome addition.

The support for scholarships is growing at Ivanhoe and for this we are most grateful. Being able to offer talented students an equity scholarship is life-changing. As a School we are committed to sustaining our current scholarship program while continually striving to increase our scholarship offerings.

We believe that the active use of technology supports learning and teaching through creation, production and problem solving and are pleased to see Ivanhoe Grammar continue to incorporate new technologies into the curriculum. Ivanhoe Grammar has helped our son grow into a confident, welleducated and socially conscious young man. We will all look back on this time at Ivanhoe Grammar School with fondness.”
