HOUSE SPIRIT
Ivanhoe Grammar School has a thriving House Program that gives students the opportunity to step out of their comfort zones, make new friends and participate in a wide range of fun and interesting activities. We know that students who feel good about themselves and who are excited and stimulated by their learning environment are more likely to fully engage and learn.

HOUSE CAPTAINS

The best event that I managed was the House Swimming Carnival.
Through my House Captaincy, I was able to build both new and deeper connections with all students in Athelstane House, allowing me to feel a greater sense of belonging and connection towards my school community.
House spirit means getting up and giving it a go, regardless of worries about exiting your comfort zone or trying new experiences. It also means showing amazing sportsmanship and support towards other houses, and great cheer for those participating.

Our favourite event we managed was the House Athletics Carnival.

Through our involvement in the House Program we have learnt how to better deal with and motivate younger students to participate in house activities, as well as having a fun time being a part of a group.
House spirit means everyone getting involved, even if it just means cheering from the sidelines. Having a level of energy, and everyone supporting each other.

My favourite event was the Athletics Carnival. Oscar and I were able to work closely to ensure that every event was filled, and had immense cooperation from all our house, but especially the year 12s. I felt nothing but pride being able to hold the trophy with Oscar at the end of the day.
I have learnt how important it is to lead by example. To gain participation from our house, I found that fully immersing myself and engaging with whatever task lied ahead prompted such enthusiasm.
To me, house spirit means to involve yourself despite hesitations, or even limitations. It means to give everything a go to benefit your team, simultaneously expanding your own horizons. As well, a strong, positive attitude allows for such spirit to emerge, being infectious upon your peers.

The Athletics Carnival was highly enjoyable because I saw so many of my peers getting involved and having a good time. I will miss moments like these greatly.

The House Program gave me an immense sense of belonging to the school, particularly in my first years at Ivanhoe. Being in Sherwood taught me a lot about inclusivity and the benefit of communities in life. Someone with a great deal of house spirit is enthusiastic, positive, and inclusive above all else in my view.

Although we thoroughly enjoyed managing all the house events, our favourite was the inaugural House Arts Competition. The participation was outstanding and made for a fantastic house bonding activity. The liveliness of ArtsEdge and the Visual Arts staff (especially Ms Patterson) was infectious. The experience was made even sweeter by a Thoresby victory! Take that Sherwood. The House Program has taught us many things about teamwork and leadership. One of the most valuable aspects of the program is the inter-year level participation. Many a time, we have witnessed positive interactions between students across year levels, whether it is Year 12 students cheering on a Year 7 tug-of-war team, or Year 8 students hyping up Year 11’s in the pool. This willingness to work together has taught us the value of working as a team to reach a common goal. By promoting such beneficial team building, the House Program has given rise to many long-lasting friendships. We always say that Thoresby is number one in spirit. To us, house spirit is the courage to push not only yourself out of your comfort zone, but to also support and encourage those around you to do the same. House competitions go far beyond winning a trophy, it is the small and often unnoticed victories and positives that are what drives the program. No matter the result, we will always be there to motivate our fellow house members and congratulate them for their efforts. If each student gives it their best shot and has fun, as House Prefects we are satisfied. It is not about the result, it is about the actions before and after that really matter.
