Although the results published here share some of our top achievements, the importance of celebrating the personal best of all our students cannot be underestimated. In 2020, a number of Year 12 students at Ivanhoe Grammar School chose to undertake the well-respected International Baccalaureate (IB) to expand their options for tertiary education. The dedication and hard work for these students were realised in early January 2021 with the release of the IB results. Congratulations to all students, we are extremely proud of their achievements.

What has been the best thing about Year 12?

The culture and support, from teachers to my peers, it truly felt like everyone was supporting each other to get through a tough year and also to cherish every moment.

What advice would you give to other students about Year 12?

It is so important to continue co-curricular, enjoy time with friends and family and keep your hobbies up during the year to keep your workload enjoyable, manageable and sustainable. Also, your teachers are there to support and help you so ask questions!

What is your favourite memory of secondary school?

My advice to future Year 12s would be to knuckle down as much as possible to get the most out of your studies, but to also enjoy and make the most of every experience.

The 2018 Round Square International Service Trip to Sri Lanka. It was an experience like no other, meeting people from all around the world, not having our phones for two weeks, living in rural Sri Lanka, building a school classroom for a remote small-town community. It opened my eyes to the world so much and I made memories I will never forget.

Some of my favourite memories were created during my final Cadet Bivouac Camp in 2019. I had a great time facilitating the camp with the other Year 12 leaders, and really enjoyed the logistical role, while also being able to get involved in the more hands on aspects of navigation and activity preparation.

What two Ivanhoe Learner attributes speak to you out of the seven: courageous, innovative, balanced, collaborative, ethical, reflective and compassionate

I hope to finish university and move into a job within the health care industry where I can continue to learn while also having a positive impact on the community around me.

I would say compassionate and innovative. The ability to try to understand another person’s position, situation or viewpoint, to be understanding and empathetic is so important to me and something I value immensely.

What subjects did you take?

English, Health and Human Development, Physical Education, Chemistry, Methods and Biology.

What co-curricular activities did you enjoy the most?

Cadets and the Musical. Both activities were such fun and gave a good opportunity for a break from studies.

How did you manage the challenges of 2020 and grow from them?

The year 2020 was a super tough year for everyone.

I think reminding myself that everyone was going through the same struggle helped me remember to keep persevering, persisting and pushing through because it will soon be over one day, as time always passes. I think I grew from the challenges of 2020 by realising the power of resilience, a positive mindset and also the ability to adapt and be flexible, dealing with changing our learning styles and modes throughout the year while navigating the disappointment of missing out on a ‘normal’ Year 12.

The best part of Year 12 has been the opportunity to have more independence while also studying things that I’m interested in. It was also great to bond with the year level; even though much of the year was online, we all found a way to become closer.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

What two Ivanhoe Learner attributes speak to you out of the seven: courageous, innovative, balanced, collaborative, ethical, reflective and compassionate?

Balance not only helps to break up long weeks of study, but it also gives you the chance to build perspective as we get the opportunity to make ourselves more wellrounded individuals with these new experiences. I also think reflecting is important as without it, you can’t learn from your mistakes and find ways to do things more efficiently and enjoyably in the future.

What subjects did you take?

English, Methods and Specialist Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

What co-curricular activities did you enjoy the most?

Throughout my schooling I loved being a part of the School Cadet Unit and partaking in Saturday sport every week.

How did you manage the challenges of 2020 and grow from them?

Regardless of the disappointment last year, I think online learning gave me a great opportunity to reflect on how I work and how I could do things more efficiently. It also helped to refine my learning and communication skills, which I hope have better prepared me for the year ahead.

What has been the best thing about Year 12?

What has been the best thing about Year 12?

The best thing about Year 12 was being able to see each other in person again which reminded me that the best part of the high school experience is not what you learn, but who you meet.

What advice would you give to other students about Year 12?

I would encourage all students to make their mental and physical health a priority in Year 12. I find that sleep is so underrated and that our society glorifies the 24/7 grind.

But with all the studying, co-curricular activities, social events and work, it can be really easy to burn-out, which is not only bad for your health, but may also stop you from reaching your goals.

What is your favourite memory of secondary school?

I don’t have a single favourite memory of secondary school - but my fondest memories are chatting with my friends and peers before and after school.

What is the one thing you are really looking forward to after exams are finished?

Slow mornings! For me, there’s nothing better than waking up (without an alarm), cooking a nice breakfast and then reading a book.

What two Ivanhoe Learner attributes speak to you out of the seven: courageous, innovative, balanced, collaborative, ethical, reflective and compassionate?

Compassionate and courageous. It requires a lot of courage to step out of one’s comfort zone and try new things in order to grow. I think it also requires a lot of courage to be able to deal with change. Being compassionate is so important because it is essential to treat everyone with kindness – you don’t really know what someone is going through.

What subjects did you take?

I studied English Literature, French, Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Economics. I chose these subjects because I had very broad interests and wanted to try a little bit of everything.

What co-curricular activities did you enjoy the most?

Some of my fondest memories were in the Cadet Program and playing in the Firsts Volleyball team. These two experiences were the most challenging in all of my secondary years and pushed me to become more persistent and resilient.

How did you manage the challenges of 2020 and grow from them?

I could not have made it through 2020 without the support of my close friends and teachers. Last year taught me to value the people in my life so much more.

It also taught me the importance of slowing down (especially when things get hectic!) and to prioritise my mental and physical health above all else.

For me the best thing about Year 12 has been the greater sense of community that came from our peers and our mentors. Given the challenges in our final year of school, the small moments of care, concern and companionship made a large part of the school year.

What advice would you give to other students about Year 12?

To prioritise. I believe that all people have the capabilities to achieve all they desire provided that they prioritise and work towards their goals. It’s also important to remain balanced and stay resilient, never be afraid to ask for help.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I aspire to contribute to the world I live in. My aim in life is to help people and give back to the world and society that I live in.

What are you planning to do after exams?

After exams, I plan on learning new creative skills such as animation and in particular getting back into music and writing.

What two Ivanhoe Learner attributes speak to you from the seven: courageous, innovative, balanced, collaborative, ethical, reflective and compassionate?

Courageous. I believe that we should all challenge ourselves given the opportunity, as this action is what gives us the most growth and change. Reflection also speaks largely to my personality as through these new experiences I take the time to be mindful and reflect on my experiences, connections and relations in order to continue my own growth and personal development.

What subjects did you take?

During IB I studied Theory of Knowledge, HL English, History, Chemistry and SL Maths, Physics and Japanese.

What co-curricular activities did you enjoy the most?

Through being heavily involved in co-curricular programs, my favourite experiences include the Musicals, Cadet camps and Saturday Lawn Bowls. Through each of these experiences, I gathered new friendships and learning experiences but most importantly enjoyed my time while also learning and developing new skills and discovering new parts of myself.

How did you manage the challenges of 2020 and grow from them?

The year 2020 provided many challenges but was met with resilience, effort and compassion for each other. I personally decided I would look at the positive outcomes where I could. I have grown into a more resilient person who will always find a way to get things done and a solution to any problems that I’m met with.

Being a person of character is giving your best and working with others to help them be their best.

Throughout their uniquely challenging final year, the Class of 2020 developed learning skills and strategies that are bound to assist them in their future lives. We are extremely proud of the adaptability and determination that they demonstrated. They will be remembered as a group that

worked collaboratively with their peers and their teachers to rapidly build confidence in the new world of Online Learning.

The Class of 2020 has proven that when you give your best in the academic realm, learning growth is assured. Within this group there are many, many stories of individual growth and great learning success. They will always be known as the incredibly collaborative, innovative, courageous and reflective Class of 2020.

ATAR: 75.75 DESTINATION: Marketing at Monash After a tumultuous year surviving a horrific traffic accident, Griffin defied all odds and showed true resilience by completing his VCE in 2020 and got into his first preference of Marketing at Monash University.

It was a challenge in 2020 to rebuild my life again after the accident. My friends and family helped me get through the year and I have been working on my mind and trying to be as positive as possible during the lockdowns. I also wanted to do something good with my life after being given this second chance. This year was a struggle but I have the rest of my life ahead of me now. I think my experiences in Melbourne and also the accident have changed me and made me into a person of character.

I believe that coming out of such a strange year for which there was no precedent, the students of the Class of 2020 are more prepared than anyone else to tackle life’s obstacles and maintain the most critical skill to education and goalachieving: balance. I quickly learned to adapt to whatever situation was thrown at me, trying my best to separate work from play so that I could still excel in my learning.

Character is an attitude, a walking affirmation of self-belief and self-worth, and more than anything else, a humble ambition and confidence in one’s strengths and abilities. Character is a knowing of self-worth and a world-ready attitude.

GOOD GLOBAL CITIZENS The Ivanhoe Diploma is a voluntary program recognising an individual student’s additional contribution to the School and wider community, above and beyond their academic pursuits, across five areas of expertise: action, civic, engagement, creativity, inter-cultural understanding and leadership.

The Ivanhoe Diploma is awarded in addition to a student attaining their VCE or IB Diploma. It recognises that lived experiences and commitment are highly desirable qualities tertiary institutions and employers are looking for in young people.

CHARITIES The Class of 2020 helped more than 22 charities during their time at Ivanhoe Grammar School, on multiple occasions.

COMMITTEES Students were involved in over 11 committees during their time at the School.

CADET PROGRAM Almost two thirds of the Class of 2020, 192 students, were involved in our Cadet Program during their Senior Years. Our Cadet Program is a platform for senior students to exercise leadership, communication and survival skills.
