IB HIGHLIGHTS

DUCES OF 2018

In 2018, a number of Year 12 students at Ivanhoe Grammar School chose to undertake the well-respected International Baccalaureate (IB) to expand their options for tertiary education. The dedication and hard work for these students were realised in early January 2019 with the release of the IB results. Congratulations to all students, we are extremely proud of their achievements.

MATTHEW KAUFMAN

SCHOOL DUX AND THE RIDGEWAY CAMPUS DUX ATAR: 99.85 State Ranking: Placed in the top 0.15% of students in the State.

Tertiary Pathway: I’m going to Monash University to study Undergraduate Medicine.

In particular we would like to congratulate our International Baccalaureate Dux Noah McShanag-Munn who achieved an IB score of 43. This is equivalent to an ATAR of 99.7 and places Noah in the top 0.3% of the State.

What advice would you give to a senior student at Ivanhoe?: The best advice I could give is to find ways to stay motivated.

It doesn’t matter how smart you are, if you don’t put in enough work, you won’t succeed. Why not treat your final year as a chance to see how well you can do if you try your hardest?

What advice would you give to a senior student at Ivanhoe?: I think it’s always good, and important, to set yourself a very specific personal goal at every stage in life, whether it’s for your academic studies, other commitments, or anything else in life. It lets you know very clearly what you want and what you’re aiming to achieve, and it can become the motivation that keeps you going.

It reminds you that everything you’re currently doing is meaningful; everything you’re doing has a purpose.

An Ivanhoe Learner has these attributes and is committed to a life of enquiry and learning, from each other and the world around them.

YUSRA - COURAGEOUS

“ Don’t be afraid to ask for help…..sometimes talking to someone about what’s making you feel overwhelmed helps you get through it faster, and feel supported.”

In my final year I did Chemistry, Maths Methods, Specialist Mathematics, French and English and I studied Biology in Year 11. I am very interested in going down the medical or engineering path so I thought these subjects aligned with my interests the most. I also thought French was practical for future travel. At Ivanhoe, I most enjoyed the service trip to Cambodia as it allowed me to make new friends both from our School and in the Cambodian village.

I was very excited to get hands on and help the developing communities there; hopefully one day I will have the privilege of returning. I play soccer for a club outside of school, which was a hobby I was also able to develop through the Saturday sports program. In the future, I hope to either be a doctor or engineer. I would love to integrate charity work with my job to help those who have not been given the same opportunities I have been fortunate with.

JARED - COLLABORATIVE

“ The unified sense of purpose for everyone made...me feel a part of something greater.”

I chose to study English A, Literature HL, Maths SL, Business Management HL, Economics HL, French SL and Biology SL as they balanced all of my interests and covered the wide range of subjects required for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. During my time at Ivanhoe I most enjoyed the music program. Whether it was travelling to Queensland on the music tour or going on annual camps to Beechworth, every activity was a lot of fun. It was also very rewarding to play music at some of the School’s biggest events like Induction Ceremonies, ANZAC Day Services and Galas. What I will cherish from my final year was the sense of true camaraderie and belonging.

Ivanhoe has done an incredible job in establishing a true sense of community, particularly for Year 12s. The unified sense of purpose for everyone made the stressful school year a lot more bearable and made me feel a part of something greater. I am looking to study commerce over the coming years and hope this takes me on tremendous pathways for exciting careers.

KERRY - INNOVATIVE

“ I liked how I could focus on the subjects such as Physics and Specialist Math, yet also could express my creative side in VisCom.” I did VCE and I chose to do seven subjects, two last year and five in Year 12. I did Chinese and Maths Methods last year, and English, Physics, Chemistry, Specialist Maths and Visual Communication and Design in my final year. Although it sounds like a big work-load, I enjoyed all my subjects. I definitely enjoyed being a part of the School Musical. Not only was it a way to express my creativity through performing arts but the community became my ‘second family’. The best thing about Year 12 for me was the sense of accomplishment I felt, not just after finishing exams but from all the acknowledgement for all my cocurricular involvements. In a couple of years I’m not going to remember what I did during that one Chemistry lesson on a Thursday afternoon; what I am going to remember are all the moments and memories spent with my peers and teachers. I would love to do something in the future that’ll make people happy and smile.

MIKA - ETHICAL

“ It’s easy to work yourself up about all the stress of exams and your future in Year 12, but as long as you put in your best effort and stay true to yourself throughout the year, you should and will be proud of yourself regardless of your score.”

I chose Biology and Revolutions in Year 11, and in my final year I chose English, Methods and Further, Chemistry and French. These subjects gave me a good range of different things to learn about, and generally they all covered areas that I was passionate about. I tried to get myself involved with as much as possible to get the best out of my time at Ivanhoe, but my favourite co-curricular activities were Cadets and the Musical. Both allowed me to meet new people who I may not have otherwise met from the School community and gave me a chance to get out of my comfort zone, grow as a leader and also as a person. Next year I am hoping to get into medicine and eventually go into orthopedic surgery. As long as I am happy and can support myself, that’s all I can ask for of my future.

SOFIA - REFLECTIVE

“ Cadets .. helped me develop my leadership skills as you are forced to step up and challenge yourself. It taught me that I am much more capable than I realised.”

In Year 12 I completed Health and Human Development, Chemistry, Biology, Maths Methods and English. I also completed Psychology in the previous year. I chose these subjects as I have always enjoyed science; they were interesting and I believe they have adequately prepared me for my next step into university. I hope to one day work in the medical field in a health profession. I also play netball twice a week and have for years. It’s not highly competitive, just social which, during Year 12, was the best thing as it forced me away from the desk and gave me some time for myself. It also allowed me to socialise and have a bit of fun during busy weeks. The best thing about Year 12 was how close we all had become. The people I have been with for 6 years aren’t just my peers but friends for life and Year 12 really showed me that. I advise students to open up when they are feeling stressed; the best thing you can have is a strong support group surrounding you. Just remember everyone else around you is feeling the same way and this really bands Year 12 groups together. I am really looking forward to experiencing new things, the end of the exams don’t just represent the end of a chapter in our lives but a chapter of new beginnings. I am so excited to have the freedom to travel and meet new people.

GEORGIA - BALANCED

“ I always tell younger students to remember to keep a balance during Year 12. There is nothing more important than maintaining good mental health … and always leaving time to relax and refresh.”

I chose to do the IB program with higher level Physics, Biology and Psychology, and standard level English, French and Maths. I knew from the very beginning that IB was going to allow me to do all the subjects I love while still catering to the well rounded side of my learning that I’ve always valued so much. The promised challenge of the program made it even more desirable and the past two years have certainly been nothing but challenging and definitely fun and exciting.

Something I have been looking forward to after Year 12 is to have time. Time to sleep, to work, to be creative, to work on myself and to do all the things that have been on hold for the past three years. Even just being able to sit down and read a book without the stress of study looming over my shoulder was something I could not wait to experience after exams were done. I want to continue to study for as long as I can as I never want to stop learning about everything around us in the world. I hope in the future to help those around me every single day as that is something I am very passionate about and would love to dedicate a lot of time to. At the moment I’m very interested in science and law so hopefully one of those pathways works out for me and I can be in a career that I love.

CHELSEA - COMPASSIONATE

“ I hope to make a change in the world and be a voice for those who aren’t able to speak up for themselves.”

I chose the following IB subjects in Year 12: English, Maths Studies, History, Psychology, Sports Science and Indonesian. The reason why I picked History, Psychology and Sports Science was because I had a genuine interest in them, especially from the content I had learnt in Year 10 and 11. I felt that it was important to pick subjects that I would genuinely enjoy. I definitely enjoyed playing Girls’ Football the most in my final year. It was nice to play with such an enthusiastic team. My favourite memory of my time at Ivanhoe has definitely been the service trip to Cambodia. I discovered a lot about myself and learnt a lot from their different culture and I think it has made me a more open-minded and grateful person. I hope to go back in the coming years. One of the best things about Year 12 was knowing that it was the final year of schooling. It just made everything feel so much more special. My future career path is not quite certain and that’s okay because it’ll come to me one day. I do hope, however, that whatever I do I am balanced and doing my best to give back to the community. I hope to travel a lot, experience different cultures and continue to learn.

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2018

At Ivanhoe, we are all about a well-rounded education and rich diversity of learning both inside and outside the classroom, alongside contributing to the wider community. Being a person of character is efficiently and effectively giving your best and working with others to help them be their best.

Our goal is for students to feel that if they can apply themselves to all aspects of school life, and particularly to their study for their final year, and in doing so they will develop self-belief and confidence that will set them up for the years ahead.

The Class of 2018 helped more than 40 charities during their time at Ivanhoe Grammar School, on multiple occasions.

COMMITTEES

The Ivanhoe Diploma is a voluntary Senior Years’ program recognising an individual student’s contribution to the cocurricular life of the School. Students engage in a range of self-selected learning experiences across five areas of expertise: action, civic, engagement, creativity, intercultural understanding and leadership.

The Ivanhoe Diploma is awarded in addition to VCE or IB and recognises that lived experiences and commitment are highly desirable qualities tertiary institutions and employers are looking for in young people.

DESTINATIONS OF CULTURAL, INTERNATIONAL AND SERVICE TRIPS Our students have a deeper understanding of their world due to the wide range of trips they experienced at Ivanhoe Grammar School, including Round Square Conferences, Cambodian Service Trips, sporting trips, exchanges and language cultural tours.

Students were involved in over 10 committees during their time at the School.

CADET PROGRAM Almost two thirds of the Class of 2018, 178 students, were involved in our Cadet Program during their Senior Years.

Our Cadet program is a platform for senior students to exercise leadership, communication and survival skills.
