A New Chapter Begins

From the Principal, Dr Deborah Priest For more than 118 years, the Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School uniform has undergone a range of significant changes to meet the needs of students. Over the School’s proud history, the colours of the uniform items have evolved many times, and have changed from navy, brown, gold, and cobalt blue, and featured patterns ranging from check to stripes and spots! The new uniform, to be worn from Term 1 2022, represents a three-year journey that commenced with our students speaking for themselves. In 2019 students and the Ivanhoe Girls’ community conveyed their views in a whole community research project noting they wanted a uniform that:

Introduction The Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Collection Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School is proud to introduce our new Academic and Core Sport and Physical Education (PE), which will be available for students to wear from Term 1, 2022. Based on significant community research, the new Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Uniform offers a seasonal wardrobe, with a number of transeasonal items offering year round comfort and flexibility. The Ivanhoe Girls’ Collection features four custom designed wardrobes, to ensure all students of Ivanhoe Girls’ enjoy a range of uniform choices that are age appropriate. There are specific wardrobe collections for:

Journey to the New Uniform The Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Collection will be available to purchase from the Bob Stewart Uniform Shop in High Street, Kew and the Uniform Shop located at Woolley House, 137 Marshall Street, Ivanhoe, from 10 January 2022. Uniform Shop Appointments will be available for families from 10 January 2022 – 24 January 2022. Appointments can be made via the Bob Stewart website at bobstewart.com.au. Families can purchase the new Uniform from Bob Stewart in Kew from 10 January 2022 and the Ivanhoe Store from 27 January 2022. A complete size range of the new Academic Summer and Core Sport/PE Uniforms will be available in store from 10 January 2022. Winter Academic Uniform items will be available in store during Term 1, 2022. Orders may be placed for items that have been delayed due to freight or shipping delays due to COVID-19.

Please note that new and current uniform items in each wardrobe collection (ie: ELC to Prep uniform, Summer, Winter and Core Sport/PE) may not be mixed and matched, as the uniforms are designed to be worn as a complete set. However, students may wear the new Core Sport/PE uniform and the current Academic Uniform, or vice-versa, until the commencement of 2024. Of course, students may also opt to wear the complete new Uniform from as early as Term 1, 2022.

As a progressive and forward-thinking community of learners, our new uniform needed to keep up. The way we teach, engage, participate, and build confidence in our students changes rapidly. These changes aren’t for change’s sake – they’re considered, thoughtful, brave, well informed, and bold – just like the new uniform. In 2019, the Uniform Review Committee set about developing a new uniform that adhered to the outcomes of the research process. We needed to ensure that the new uniform: • provided comfort to ensure students’ minds are on the task at hand with fabrics that stretch and breathe

• Resilient – long lasting, quality fabrics that will see you through years of schooling • Durable – these items don’t require delicate care, they’re machine-washable and most items can be tumble dried • Versatile – as requested, we’ve maintained the distinct summer and winter look, and new range of knits and accessories will ensure maximum comfort on both the hottest and coldest days • Unified – although individuals, we’re connected by our values, this is consolidated in our appearance, representing our school in our community and our positive behaviour. The Uniform Review Committee are confident that students will love the new additions to the Uniform. Some of the new items introduced include: • Warmer and weatherproof Core Sport/PE gear with a move away from white garments for sport • Fun House polo shirts to enhance students’ sense of belonging

• provided great fit and design that imbues a sense of pride and belonging

• Lighter blazers with stretch that have a better cut to suit our students

• has a new Sport/PE uniform that is manufactured by experts to included technical fabrications to give students the best opportunity for them to perform at their best

• Introduction of the ‘rite of passage’ blazer pocket in Year 7 which has the students peer year embroidered on the blazer

• offered value for money – long-lasting, hard-wearing, durable, easy-care for years of wear, including being passed on to younger family members or the Second Life Uniform Shop. Like our students, our new uniform is: • Flexible – a wider variety to better suit the needs of individuals

The Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Collection is the result of years of consultation and careful consideration. We are proud of a Uniform that reflects the proud tradition of the School, incorporating the School logo of the Anglican Church Mitre across the uniform range, and enhancing the School brand with the colours of royal blue, espresso brown and white. At the same time, we have included a range of culturally diverse and non-gender specific items, recognising the diversity and individuality of our student body. With the support of our uniform retailer and supplier, Bob Stewart, we made a conscious effort to ensure ethical and sustainable manufacturing processes, as well as reducing plastic packaging. In addition, the School will continue its tradition of recycling uniform items at the Second Life Shop. History and Development Timeline Since 1923, Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School students have worn the School uniform with pride. Over the years the uniform has constantly evolved, with changing tastes, fashions and requirements. Thanks to results from a student survey conducted in 2018, it was decided the time was right for the School to implement a uniform review, and so an extensive consultation period was undertaken within the School community during 2019.

History of the School Uniform

Today we are proud to present the new Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Collection. We believe this new uniform will reinvigorate the School with a progressive and modern style, and offer students flexibility, quality, and comfort today and into the future.

1903 – 1923

1935 – 2005

Prior to 1923, the School was called Cooerwull and there was no standard uniform. Towards the end of this era, students wore a navy box pleat tunic, a white shirt and navy tie.

In 1935, a brown uniform was introduced, featuring a checked cotton dress for Summer and a brown serge pinafore for Winter. Whilst there were many variations and changes over the ensuing decades, the colours of brown and gold, and the Bishop’s Mitre emblazoned on the Blazer pocket, remained.

1923 – 1935 The first formal school uniform was adopted. The summer uniform was a navy fuji silk dress with long sleeves and white (later fawn) collar and cuffs. In winter, students wore a navy tunic and blazer, which featured a Bishop’s Mitre, embroidered in gold thread on the pocket. The sports uniform of the time was a navy fuji silk tunic, worn with a white blouse and navy tie.

2006 – 2021 In 2005 Jane Lamerton (Class of 1974), was approached to redesign the uniform and a new era began. The new design featured cobalt blue and the modern design of garments made them more flexible and comfortable to wear.

• January: The first meeting held to draft the Terms of Reference for the Uniform Review Committee was held. • April: The Uniform Review Committee (URC) was established.

• May – June: Essence Communications was appointed to undertake the Research and Consultative process. • July – September: The research process concluded, and its findings were examined by the URC, who duly amended the Terms of Reference and draft Scope and Philosophy for approval by the Executive Team.

As a result of senior students requesting the uniform meet the diverse needs of our student population, long pants were offered for the first time at Ivanhoe Girls’.

2017

• October – December: A tender process was conducted to appoint a Uniform designer. • December: Jonathan Ward from JW Holdings was appointed Designer of the Uniform.

2018 Feedback from students surveys indicated that the School uniform was no longer ‘fit for purpose’, so the decision was made to undertake a full review of the Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Uniform.

• March: Second Life Uniform Shop stops accepting current uniform items but will continue to sell and run-down stock until end of 2023. • December: Second Life Uniform Shop will responsibly dispose of any unsold existing uniform stock via charities and textile recycling programs.

2023

• March: Initial designs concepts were presented and reviewed by the URC.

• January: The Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Collection is available to purchase via Bob Stewart stores in Ivanhoe and Kew.

• April – August: 25 design concepts were presented for the Academic Uniform and 10 design story concepts were presented for the Core Sport/PE Uniform.

• Term 1: The two-year transition period commences. The current and new uniform items must not be worn together.

• September: Final concept presented to the School Executive and School Board for approval.

2024 • Term 1: All students will wear the Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School new Uniform.

Introducing the Designer Jonathan Ward is one of Australia’s most prominent fashion designers and is recognised for his innovation, creativity and vision when it comes to schoolwear design. Following a global career in high end fashion including Yves Saint Laurent, he returned to Australia to establish Jonathan Ward Couture in 1988 and was the Executive Designer for R.M. Williams from 2001-2015. In 2015, Jonathan launched JW Collective to cater for the growing demand for Education and Corporate Uniforms with a unique design aesthetic.

Why is Ivanhoe Girls’ different to other schools you have designed for?

Jonathan has worked with some of Australia’s most prominent independent schools on the design of their uniforms for all ages across academic, sport and accessories.

I really love the fabrics…the bold hound’s-tooth, the bright royal blue ‘rockstar’ blazer, the considered, thoughtful espresso, the flexibility and adaptability of the range, combined with a contemporary edge for the modern world.

The extensive experience Jonathan brought to the design, concept and production process, all whilst experiencing a global pandemic has given Ivanhoe Girls’ a uniform that will inspire and provide students with a sense of belonging whilst at the same time being comfortable, timeless and durable.

I knew after seeing the creativity around the School and after speaking with the students, that Ivanhoe Girls’ is unique, embodying the values of creativity, diversity, fun and authenticity…I knew I had to capture that in my design. The Uniform Review Committee challenged me and I challenged them to think outside the box. I believe this has resulted in a great outcome for the School and the students in particular.

Frequently Asked Questions Q. Why has the School introduced a new uniform? A. The students asked, and we responded! Well over 14 years on from the release of the current uniform, new fabrics, materials, and designs allow for greater comfort, fit and choice for our students to wear now and in the future. The new uniform also provides for greater durability and is contemporary and bold. It offers greater options for our diverse student population to ensure we remain a progressive and forward-thinking community. Q. What is the transition period? A. There is a two-year transition period from the current uniform to the new uniform. All students must be in the new uniform by the beginning of the 2024 school year. Q. What are the major differences between the current and new designs? A. The most defining point of difference with the new uniform is the choice of a darker brown (espresso brown), royal blue and white, which are enhanced by a more tailored, elegant and classic design style to ensure greater fit and comfort for all students. Some of the new fabrics used have built in elastane to ensure better movement and fit. For the first time, the School has introduced summer shorts to wear in Terms 1 and 4 along with trouser pants that can be worn year round. The range also includes a cardigan. Students will receive a pocket for their blazer at the ‘Right of Passage’ Assembly in Year 7 which will have their peer year embroidered on the pocket e.g. Class of 2027. Q. When will the blazer pocket be added to my daughter’s blazer in Year 7? A. Your daughter’s blazer will be collected on the last Friday before she heads to Year 7 Camp and will be returned to them via their Year Level Centre on the Monday morning the students return from Camp. Q. At what year does the Blazer commence in the Junior School? A. The Blazer is worn from Year 1 in the Junior School as the Prep Uniform is the same at the Early Learning Centre. Q. Why is there no Blazer Pocket on the Junior School Blazer? A. As part of the transition for students through Junior School to Senior School, students in Junior School will not receive their Blazer Pocket until the Rite of Passage Assembly in Year 7. The Junior School Blazer will still carry the Ivanhoe Girls’ Logo on the left chest of the Blazer. Q. What if I’m not in Year 7 and will be purchasing the new blazer? A. On purchase of your new uniform, the blazer will be retained by Bob Stewart to have your peer year pocket added to the blazer at the School’s expense. As soon as this is ready, you will be notified by Bob Stewart to collect it from the Uniform Shop in Ivanhoe. Q. Can I keep my blazer pocket when I leave in Year 12? A. The new uniform has been designed so that when students finish in Year 12, the blazer pocket can be easily removed and the blazer can be sold in the Second Life Uniform Shop and the student can have their blazer pocket framed as a keepsake of their time at Ivanhoe Girls’.

Q. What about school photos in 2022 and 2023? A. Class/Tutor and group photos are an historical record. For the next two years they will accurately record that we were in a transition to a new uniform. Individual school photos will continue to be a lovely record of each student, no matter which uniform they are wearing.

Q. Can the new uniform be worn with the old uniform? A. No. Students must either wear the current old uniform or the new uniform, not a mix of both. This applies to both the Academic Summer/Winter and Core Sport/PE uniforms. Obviously, sporting team uniforms will move to new team uniforms by the start of 2024, if not before. Q. Can I buy the full new summer uniform in 2022 (wearing the old winter uniform in 2022) and then the new winter uniform in 2023? A. No. The new blazer cannot be worn with the old uniform and the old blazer cannot be worn with the new uniform and the blazer is an all year round uniform item. Q. What colour are the new school shoes? A. The new school shoes are black and are available to purchase from Bob Stewart in Kew or The Soletrader (formally Moretons) in Ivanhoe. The Soletrader is offering a 20% discount for Ivanhoe Girls’ families if you purchase your pair prior to the new school year. You need to mention the offer when purchasing your shoes. The School will allow students to wear black shoes with the old uniform during the transition period. Q. What will ELC, Prep and Junior School students wear? A. ELC students may wear the current uniform in 2022 and 2023 but will be required to purchase the new ELC-Prep Uniform Range for the start of the 2024 academic year. E.g. If commencing in Three-Year Old Kinder in 2022 and you plan on continuing to Prep – your daughter will wear the same new uniform for three years before progressing to the Junior School Academic Uniform from Year 1. Prep students may wear the current Academic Uniform or the ELC - Prep Uniform Uniform for 2022 but should progress to the new Junior School Academic Uniform for Year 1 from the beginning of 2023. Years 1-6 students may wear the current Academic uniform in 2022 and 2023 but will be required to wear the new uniform for the start of the 2024 academic year. Q. Will we allow the old school bag to be worn with the new one? A. Yes. However, the new School Bag must be changed over in time for the commencement of 2024 when the transition period ends. Q. What hair accessories are allowed with the new uniform? A. Only Royal Blue hair accessories are allowed. These will be available from the Uniform Shop. Q. Won’t the lack of consistency in uniform look messy while we transition from one uniform to the other? A. Yes. However, we feel that it is important to give families sufficient time to make the change across to the new uniform. The transition period will be a memorable time in the School’s history: we know it will be wonderful in the end.

Q. What about the students who only have a couple of years of school left? A. Students who will complete school prior to 2023 will make an individual family choice about whether to switch across to the new uniform. Once students have completed Year 12 the new pieces can be sold through the Second Life Uniform Shop. Q. When will the new items be available for purchase? A. Our uniform retail partner, Bob Stewart, will be offering Appointments in the Ivanhoe On Campus Uniform Shop between Monday 10 - Monday 24 January 2022. Please refer to page 27 for opening times in January 2022. The Bob Stewart store in Kew will have the new uniform available six days per week (without an appointment) from Monday 10 January 2022. Q. What will the guidelines be for the new uniform? A. A complete guide including price list will be communicated to students and families following the launch in early December 2021. Q. Now that the Core Sport/PE uniform has changed, what will happen to the team sport uniforms? A. The School will gradually replace the team sport uniforms in the next two years to ensure the new designs are ready for 2024. Q. What about the colours/awards and embroidery on my blazer pocket? A. For the duration of the transition period, the School will cover the cost of reproducing a student’s exisiting colours and awards onto a new blazer pocket. Further details about this process will be communicated to families. Q. Can I purchase the School uniform on my school account? A. No. The Bob Stewart Uniform Shop does not accept payment via school account. Payments can be made via credit card, EFTPOS, cheque or cash. The Second Life Uniform Shop will continue to charge via your school account only, as there are no cash sales.

Q. Are you able to wear the Tailored Shorts in Winter? A. No. The tailored shorts can only be worn with the summer short sleeved shirt in Terms 1 and 4. Q. Who can wear the new House polo? A. Students in Years 3 - 12 are requested to purchase the House polo in their allocated House. Q. Can the House polo be worn outside of the House Carnivals? A. The new House polo can be worn for PE lessons and House Carnivals only. It must not be worn for any interschool or GSV sports training or matches. Q. Is there a long sleeve sport polo for Winter? A. No. There is only one style of Sport Polo (Short Sleeve). We have however introduced a new warm-up top as a mid-season option for students that replaces the rugby jumper. Q. Do I have to wear tights under my winter skirt/tunic? A. No. Students may choose to wear either the School Winter Socks or plain Black Tights under the winter skirt or tunic. Students must wear the approved School Winter Socks only. Q. Can white school socks be worn in Winter? A. No. White school socks with royal trim may only be worn in Summer (Terms 1 and 4). They must not be below the ankle. If you are wearing the tailored pants, you must wear the new black with royal trim school socks. Q. Can I wear any scarf with the uniform? A. No. It needs to be the new “Potter” Striped School Scarf. The old one cannot be worn with the new uniform. Q. Do I need to buy the School bathers? A. Yes. The new school bathers are espresso brown, royal trim with the School logo on the front in white. Q. Does the Swimming Cap need to have the School crest on it? A. Ideally if your daughter is part of the School swim team, she should purchase the School swimming cap. It is not compulsory for all other students not involved in the swim team. However, you will need to purchase a swimming cap in your daughter’s House colour. Both the Uniform Shop and the Swimming Pool stock school and House swimming caps. Q. Does the Uniform Shop stock goggles and are they special school ones? A. The Uniform Shop does not stock swimming goggles, but the Swimming Pool does. There are no special school goggles.

Q. When do I need to wear the School Tie? A. There is no longer a school tie with the new uniform. The School Tie will still need to be worn with the old uniform for formal occasions such as Open Day, Cathedral Service, Formal Assemblies and important school events as deemed by the Head of Senior School or Head of Junior School. Q. Are you able to wear the Tailored Skirt/Pinafore in Summer? A. No. It may only be worn in Winter (Terms 2 and 3 only). Q. Are you able to wear the Tailored Pants in Summer? A. Yes. Tailored pants may be worn with the summer short sleeved shirt in Terms 1 and 4. Black School Winter Socks with Blue Trim must be worn at all times with the tailored pants.

For those families wishing to purchase the older uniform, Bob Stewart in Ivanhoe will continue to stock the range (which has been heavily discounted) during the next two years until stock runs out. The new Uniform will be available to purchase at Bob Stewart in Kew from Monday 10 January 2022. You do not need an appointment time to purchase the new uniform at the Kew store. The Bob Stewart Uniform Shop in Ivanhoe will open for extended hours for retail purchases from 27 - 31 January only and then revert back to normal trading hours from Thursday 3 February 2022.

Appointments for Uniform Fittings Appointments can be booked at the Bob Stewart Uniform Shop in Ivanhoe only. Appointments are available for students between 10 - 24 January 2022.
